    ‘I’ve forgiven Fubara – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike declared that he has forgiven Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He spoke while reacting to issues on Channels Television Politics Today monitored by The Nation

Wike commended President Bola Tinubu for lifting the emergency rule imposed on Rivers, describing the move as a courageous intervention that restored calm.

He said: “I must commend Mr. President for lifting the emergency rule in Rivers, so many people, so many people became constitutional experts, senior advocates and analysts because of the so-called emergency rule.

“I believe so many of the Rivers people are happy because of what Mr President has done. And what did he do? What was the basis of declaring the state of emergency?”

The former Rivers Governor explained that the initial decision to declare emergency rule was tied to constitutional issues highlighted by the Supreme Court.

Wike said: “The basis was that one, the Supreme Court said there was no governance in Rivers because at that time it was only one arm of government that was functioning, being the executive, as if it was functioning.

“The legislature was not in existence. At the local government level, the Supreme Court set aside a purported election that was held that was not in consonance with the law. And remember that before now, the supreme court said, ‘look, you cannot have a caretaker committee in the local governments because Section 7 of the Constitution, as amended, guarantees the existence of the local government and therefore if there’s no local government, you cannot derive from the Federation Account’,” he stated.

According to Wike, President Tinubu stepped in because failure to act decisively could have escalated into a deeper crisis.

“And the President said so many other things that came to the fact that if we don’t take these actions then there will be a serious crisis. I want to thank him for taking that bold step, it would have been a different ball game,” Wike added.

He also explained the political calculations behind the President’s intervention, saying the emergency declaration was a compromise to maintain peace.

“As a politician, for the interest of the state, the President is my boss, he looked at it and said, yes you are working with me, the Governor may have infringed and committed impeachable offence, we want peace, and the only way we can get peace is by declaring state of emergency and then see how things can stabilize. That led to the meetings with my humble self, the governor, the assembly, the National Assembly, and key stakeholders, we all met and agreed we have to move forward, and to the glory of God as I speak to you peace returned,” he recounted.

Wike, however, warned against those he described as “natural crisis builders” who thrive only in periods of conflict.

“The only thing I can say while watching on TV today is that there are people who are natural crisis builders, who think they can only benefit when there is a crisis,” he said.

He stressed that he deliberately chose peace over escalation, maintaining consistent communication with Governor Fubara.

“If for us, we don’t want the state of emergency to be lifted, we would have done one or two things, but I said no, for the interest of the state, I was talking with the Governor from time to time and he has assured me we can’t go back now, and the President has stabilized the state. Anything that’s for peace I am for it,” Wike said.

Finally, the former Rivers Governor emphasised his straightforward approach to politics, dismissing suggestions that his reconciliation with Fubara was merely tactical.

“I can’t speak with a man I’ve not forgiven; I don’t play like that. I am not a politician who says one thing here and does another thing. If I tell you we are quarrelling, then we are quarrelling. If I tell you peace has come, then peace has truly come,” Wike declared.

Fayose’s brother quits PDP, withdraws from Ekiti governorship race

Otunba Emmanuel Fayose has withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Ekiti State, citing alleged compromise by the party’s national leadership.

Fayose, younger brother of former Governor Ayodele Fayose, announced his decision at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He accused PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am using this occasion to formally announce my decision and that of my teeming supporters to resign our membership from the PDP,” Fayose said.

According to him, the party’s leadership under Damagum and Anyanwu has “hindered the progress of the PDP in Ekiti State,” making the governorship primary an exercise already programmed for failure.

Efforts to get a response from the PDP National Chairman on Fayose’s allegations were unsuccessful as a text message sent to him was not replied.

“Gentlemen of the press, credible information available at my disposal revealed that the process of the PDP primaries for the Ekiti governorship election has already been compromised.

“Whoever emerges as a candidate will not be recognised by INEC to contest against the ruling APC in the state.

“In view of this, i hereby dissociate myself from this kangaroo arrangement. i urge my teeming supporters and associates to remain calm as I make consultations on my next plan of action,” Otunba Emmanuel Fayose stated.

“If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life, sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.”

Jega: Nigeria’s democracy undermined by poor, self-serving leadership

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has stressed that leadership, democracy, and national development are inseparable pillars that determine a nation’s progress.

Speaking as the keynote speaker at the 3rd Hybrid Annual National Conference of the Department of Political Science, Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Jega said good leadership provides vision and direction, while democracy ensures accountability and citizens’ participation in governance.

He warned that when leadership and democracy work in harmony, they foster socio-economic development, but when in disharmony, they enable authoritarian reversals and frustrate citizens’ aspirations.

Jega lamented that Nigeria suffers from a shortage of responsible and visionary leaders, arguing that many in power are preoccupied with amassing wealth rather than serving the people.

“Without responsible and visionary leadership, democracy cannot thrive; without democratic principles, leadership risks devolving into authoritarianism,” he said.

Other speakers, including the Emir of Kaura Namoda, HRH Major (Dr) Mohammed Ahmad Asha (Rtd), and the Vice Chancellor of FUGUS, Prof. Mu’azu Abubakar Gusau (represented), commended the conference for its timeliness amid Nigeria’s social and security challenges.

Dr. Aminu Idris, Head of the Department of Political Science and host of the event, described the gathering as a transformative platform, praising Governor Lawal’s support and the University’s commitment to scholarship and progress.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Comrade Abdulrahman Adamu, decried the monetisation of Nigerian politics, saying it has denied the nation opportunities for good and sound leadership.

Abia lawmaker dumps APC for Labour Party

The lawmaker representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP).

Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, Akaliro said his decision was personal and driven by his conviction that Governor Alex Otti has, in the past two years, demonstrated leadership and commitment in delivering democratic dividends to the people of Abia State.

According to him, the governor’s leadership style has made it difficult for him to play the role of an opposition lawmaker, hence his decision to join forces with the administration to further support governance in the state.

“Today, I have seen the light,” Akaliro said. “I have watched His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, closely to understand where he is coming from and where he is headed. Based on what he has done so far for the good of our state, I have decided to join him in the Labour Party (LP).”

He pledged to work with the governor in ensuring that more democratic dividends reach the residents and citizens of Abia State.

“Abia is number one in virtually everything, cutting across the nooks and crannies of the state. I am proud to say that, truly, I am an Abian.

“Judging from his (Otti’s) antecedents and what he has done, I thought that he was a banker, but I never knew that he was a seasoned administrator; he came prepared for the job, and today, I am really happy, and my constituents are excited that I have decided to join the moving train. I know that he is taking us to the proper destination, and Abia has always rejoiced. Abia will be happy with him and will continue to be happy with him.

“The governor has done well in the education sector. He has also done well in infrastructure, roads, houses, smart schools, name it, cutting across the length and breadth of Abia State; even the blind can see that this man came prepared for the work, and he is doing it seamlessly.

“As a former opposition member, Dr. Alex Otti made my job very difficult, because I have nothing to criticize him with. Even when the thought comes up for me to criticize him, the next moment, he (Otti) is doing it, so, makes it difficult for me to criticize him. I have no other choice but to join him because I know that he is the right man for this job, and I want to say that no other person can do it better than him.”

Ondo Guber: Attorney General hails PDP candidate Ajayi for withdrawing petition from S’Court

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, has commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, for withdrawing his appeal pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The Attorney General in a statement described the former Deputy Governor’s decision to withdraw the petition as patriotic and statesmanlike.

Ajulo said his office had taken notice of reports of the letter dated September 16, 2025, addressed by Ajayi to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, in which he formally withdrew appeal No. SC/CV/757/2025 – MR. AJAYI ALFRED AGBOOLA & ANOR V. INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION & 3 ORS.

The Attorney General said Ajayi’s decision was a rare attribute of statesmanship, maturity, and unwavering commitment to peace and democratic stability.

According to him, the move demonstrates Ajayi’s resolve to place the greater interest of Ondo State above partisan considerations, which he noted will further strengthen the legitimacy of democratic institutions and foster political harmony in the state.

“I acknowledge this patriotic decision and wish to place on record our deep appreciation for the statesmanship, maturity, and unwavering commitment to peace and democratic stability demonstrated by Hon. Agboola Ajayi.

“His resolve to put the greater interest of Ondo State above partisan considerations is a rare attribute that underscores his enduring devotion to the principles of good governance, harmony, and collective progress,” Ajulo stated.

“It note worthy, that this decision has further validated the overwhelming victory of Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the November 16, 2024 Governorship election in Ondo State, where he emerged as the first ever candidate of a political party, to secure victory in all the 18 Local Government areas of the State, while this also marks the first election judicial dispute in the history of our state, that was not fought to the very end, by aggrieved candidates and political parties.

“No doubt, this is a precedent, that will historically positively impact on democracy in our state.”

The Attorney General recalled that he had previously urged Hon. Ajayi to end what he described as endless litigation, adding that the withdrawal of the appeal now vindicates his earlier call.

He also expressed gratitude to leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), singling out Chief Eddy Olafeso as a point of contact, for supporting the reconciliatory process that culminated in Ajayi’s decision.

Ajulo further stressed that on behalf of the government and people of Ondo State, he extended “profound appreciation” to Ajayi for the bold step, describing it as one that would contribute to consolidating peace and unity across political divides.

Looking ahead, the Attorney General revealed that his office would collaborate with the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment and other relevant officials to initiate a statewide public engagement platform.

The initiative, he said, would provide an avenue for aggrieved politicians and citizens to dialogue, reconcile, and contribute towards the overall development of the state, now that election-related disputes have been put to rest.

Ajulo reaffirmed the commitment of the Ondo State Government to building an inclusive society where leaders, regardless of political affiliation, can contribute meaningfully to governance and development.

  • You are a false alarmist out to instigate anarchy, APC slams Atiku

You are a false alarmist out to instigate anarchy, APC slams Atiku

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of instigating anarchy over what it described ashis false alarm that hunger and insecurity in the country that can precipitate a violent revolution.

Atiku in a statement on Monday likened Nigeria’s situation to circumstances that justified historic violent revolutions and uprising in France, Russia and the Arab Spring.

But APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka in a reaction on Tuesday dismissed the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate vituperation, describing it as “a new low in a recent streak of incendiary commentaries by Atiku.

Trashing the outburst as unbecoming of a former Vice President, Morka said Atiku’s statement was “reckless, irresponsible, unbefitting and degrading to his status as former Vice President.”

The ruling party blamed the current challenges being faced in the country on Atiku and the 16 years of planlessness and misrule of the opposition PDP, where he served as a vice president for 8 years

According to Morka: “While garbed as a critique of the economic policies of President Tinubu’s administration, Atiku’s statement is nothing short of a tacit instigation of a revolution in Nigeria. His statement is reckless, irresponsible, unbefitting and degrading to his status as former Vice President.

“As a two-term Vice President, Atiku and his PDP, at the time, had the opportunity, backed by humongous oil revenues, to eradicate hunger, poverty and insecurity. Atiku and his PDP failed to do so. In fact, they made absolutely no impression against hunger, poverty and insecurity in Nigeria. They governed for 16 years, did not and could not eradicate hunger, poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.

“Instead, Atiku and his PDP democratized hunger and poverty in our country. They plundered and looted our treasury, and enthroned corruption and profligacy as state policy. Atiku and his PDP cemented the sordid foundations of hunger, poverty and insecurity that President Tinubu is battling courageously and relentlessly to defeat, with growing success.

“As Vice President, Atiku was clueless about solving Nigeria’s economic challenges. As a forever-presidential aspirant, he remains eminently clueless about what it takes to tackle our country’s economic challenges.”

APC reminded Atiku that his recent confession to the looting of $16 billion meant to provide electricity to Nigerians, under his watch as Vice President, is a stark reminder of his record of incompetent and failed leadership.

“Now out of power, Atiku thinks himself as possessing knowledge and capacity he so miserably lacked when he had the opportunity to govern as Vice President. That is utterly delusional. Nigerians know this and it is reason they have serially rebuffed his attempts to be president. Nigerians are on standby to deal Atiku, hopefully, a full and final rejection in 2027.

“Blinded by desperation, tormented by President Tinubu’s impressive and inimitable strides, distraught by an unrealized presidential ambition, disoriented by anxieties of a far faded political future, Atiku has become incapable of objective, reasoned and rational assessment of the state of our rebounded and stable economy, now set to secure growth and deliver prosperity for our nation.”

Dismissing Atiku as not being in touch with the reality of the benefits now flowing from the administration’s transformative Renewed Hope economic reforms, Morka castigated Atiku for making the statement on “a day when all news platforms had headline reports of consistent lowering of inflation numbers, at a period when all vital economic indicators are looking up and pointing in a positive direction.”
    ,
The party warned him that instigating anarchy is not legitimate or justifiable opposition politics.

“It is wrong, irresponsible, unpatriotic and unacceptable. While critique of the administration’s economic policies is within the opposition’s democratic freedom, instigating violent uprising is not a protected freedom. Violence is never a desirable or acceptable mode of democratic engagement.

“Atiku should know better and refrain from the use of inflammatory language capable of stoking violence and undermining the peace and safety of Nigerians. His duty to country must trump his desperate and inordinate presidential ambition,” the party added.

It enjoined Nigerians to ignore Atiku’s inciting statement as self-serving, anti-democratic and a threat to the peace, unity, interest and progress of our dear country.

“Atiku hardly resides in Nigeria and will not be available to partake in the attendant pain, destruction, mayhem and desolation that the revolution he is instigating will bring. We must guard our God-given liberties and not lend them to be sacrificed at the pleasure of Atiku’s political ambition.

“We urge Nigerians to remain steadfast in support of President Tinubu’s administration as it continues in its unyielding efforts to build a nation of our collective dream.”

Ogunyemi noted that he, alongside his ecstatic large number of followers, decided to join forces with the ruling party to make it stronger and help make Bariga better.

Addressing party faithful and supporters, Ogunyemi cited the transformative leadership and developmental strides of the incumbent chairman, Hon. Bukola Adedeji Iyanuiwura as the driving force behind his move.

Acknowledging his admiration for the leadership style of erstwhile chairman, Hon. Kolade Alabi, Ogunyemi expressed his approval of the APC’s efforts towards unifying Bariga residents. He also applauded the Lagos East Senatorial ambition of Hon. Alabi, describing it as a bold step.

Ogunyemi, reflected on his political history with the PDP, stating that despite contesting on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 elections as an House of Assembly contender, and Young Progressives Party (YPP) councillorship aspirant for Ward E, he now acknowledges the APC as the party that truly prioritises the welfare of the people and effectively manages their affairs.

Ogunyemi said: “I’m happy to join the party today. This is a momentous occasion. I didn’t come alone, I’m standing here today with my supporters too especially members of Motor Dealers Association; Bariga artiste forum consisting of Content Creators, DJ, entertainers, and other vibrant youths.

“My dedication to public service remains unwavering, and I am excited about the opportunities this new chapter will bring to amplify all efforts in addressing the pressing issues that matter to us all in Bariga Local Council”.

Applauding Ogunyemi’s strategic move, Hon. Adedeji eulogised him for leading his teeming supporters and party faithful from PDP to APC.

She urged the new APC members to not only educate other members of PDP about the good things the APC government was doing in Bariga Local Council but also mobilise them to join the ruling party in Bariga.

One of the highlights of the event was the symbolic presentation of the party’s broom to Ogunyemi and his teeming party supporters.

  • Dogara: Tinubu inherited troubled economy, taking bold steps to avert collapse

Dogara: Tinubu inherited troubled economy, taking bold steps to avert collapse

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday, said President Bola Tinubu inherited a deeply troubled economy riddled with “economic debris.”

Dogara, while delivering the maiden Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture organized by the House of Representatives Press Corps at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, listed excessive deficit financing through Ways and Means, dual exchange rates that enriched a few, and crude oil forward sales tied to foreign loans among the challenges.

He described Tinubu’s sweeping tax reforms as the most audacious overhaul of Nigeria’s fiscal framework in decades, urging the government to ensure transparency and sustained implementation to earn public trust.

“By the time President Tinubu took office, N22.7 trillion had been printed and injected into the economy, destroying the value of the naira. Some anointed people were making hundreds of millions off forex allocations without producing any goods or services whatsoever,” Dogara said.

He argued that such structural distortions made urgent reforms inevitable.

“From day one, it was clear that something urgent, nay revolutionary, must be done to prevent our economy from imploding,” he added, stressing that the President had acted with courage despite strong opposition.

His lecture, titled “Navigating Tax Reform in Nigeria: Insights on President Tinubu’s Policies”, examined the origins, scope, and expected impact of the tax reforms encapsulated in the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related legislation.

Dogara outlined the key provisions of the reforms, which consolidate 16 federal tax statutes into four principal Acts:

Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025: Consolidates multiple tax laws into a unified framework, expands the tax base to cover digital services and virtual currencies, and introduces a 15% minimum effective tax rate for large companies.

Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025: Modernizes assessment, collection, and compliance rules, introduces simplified filing for low-income earners, mandates the use of unified Taxpayer Identification Numbers (Tax IDs), and establishes a Tax Ombudsman’s office.

Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (NRSEA) 2025: Establishes the Nigeria Revenue Service to replace the FIRS, with expanded powers and mandatory transparency reporting.

Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act (JRBEA) 2025: Harmonizes federal-state revenue sharing and coordinates dispute resolution through a Tax Appeal Tribunal and Ombudsman.

According to him, the reforms, which will be fully operational by January 2026, are designed to simplify Nigeria’s complex tax regime, broaden the tax net, encourage compliance, and align domestic rules with global standards.

Quoting the report of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, chaired by Prof. Taiwo Oyedele, Dogara said the reforms were conceived to “protect the poor, empower businesses, encourage investment, and ensure fairness across society.”

Among the reliefs introduced are exemptions for small companies with a turnover of N100 million or less, rent reliefs for salaried workers, tax credits for upstream oil operators, and a full income tax exemption for individuals earning N800,000 or less annually.

The reforms also abolish multiple sectoral levies, replacing them with a single 4% development levy, while new provisions bring digital gains, crypto assets, and foreign exchange earnings into the tax net.

Dogara addressed concerns over a 5% fuel surcharge captured in the new Act, saying it was not a new tax but a restatement of an existing provision in the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) Act, 2007.

He stressed that the surcharge would not apply to household energy products such as kerosene, cooking gas, or compressed natural gas, and would only take effect after the Finance Minister issues an official gazette order.

“This safeguard eliminates recklessness and ensures timing and economic conditions are carefully considered,” he explained.

Despite applauding the boldness of the reforms, Dogara highlighted challenges around uncertainty in interpretation, technological readiness, skilled manpower, and short-term compliance costs.

“The drive towards full digitalization, from e-invoicing to automated tax filings, promises efficiency but demands a significant upgrade in our own digital capabilities and cybersecurity,” he said.

He said businesses must invest in systems and training to adapt.

The former Speaker emphasized that successful tax reform requires public trust.

“True tax reform is not about raising rates, but about raising trust. When citizens can see where their naira goes, they are proud to give it,” he said.

Dogara urged the government to ensure revenues raised are transparently deployed to build roads, power industries, and improve hospitals and schools.

“Let this reform be a pact between the government and the private sector, a promise that if we contribute diligently, the government will deploy those resources responsibly,” he said.

He called on President Tinubu to ensure sustained implementation, as the reforms could cement his place in history.

“This is a legacy that would impact generations after us and cement President Tinubu’s place in Nigeria’s history as the undisputed most consequential economic reformer of our time,” he said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas commended President Bola Tinubu’s bold tax reforms, describing them as a decisive step toward simplifying compliance, broadening the tax net, and easing the burden on ordinary Nigerians.

Abbas was represented by the House Spokesperson and Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jnr.

He said the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, chaired by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, and the harmonisation of tax collection processes set to take effect in January 2026, represent “a significant intervention that promises to re-engineer our tax administration architecture for greater efficiency, fairness, and transparency.”

According to him, the National Assembly has devoted considerable energy to diligently processing the far-reaching legislation transmitted by the executive, through robust debates, stakeholder consultations, and committee work.

“Indeed, what we now have before us is one of the most significant steps of building our Fourth Republic, with the greatest potential to transform our economy and fiscal institutions,” he said.

The Speaker stressed that the 10th House remains committed to open governance and citizen engagement.

He cited innovations such as livestreaming, community sessions, and digital portals that have made legislative processes more transparent and inclusive.

Abbas also reaffirmed the legislature’s support for press freedom, outlining ten key principles he said should guide the media in strengthening democracy.

These include telling the right stories that promote unity and peace, rejecting fake news, exposing mistakes in governance, ensuring objectivity in reporting, and holding public officials accountable.

“Press freedom in Nigeria is not negotiable,” he declared, while urging journalists to partner with the legislature to promote transparency, protect democracy, and safeguard human rights.

The Speaker praised the House of Representatives Press Corps for convening the lecture and commended the inaugural guest lecturer, former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, as a statesman whose insights would provide intellectual grounding to the ongoing discourse on fiscal reforms.

“As we reflect today, let us remain focused on the bigger picture, building a Nigeria where taxation supports enterprise, strengthens equity, protects the vulnerable, and funds the aspirations of our people,” Abbas said.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and called for stronger collaboration between the media and tax authorities in deepening public understanding of ongoing fiscal reforms.

Special Assistant to the FIRS Chairman on Tax Policy, Mr. Olufemi Olarinde, who represented the Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, acknowledged the historic role of the press as the “fourth estate of the realm,” stressing that its influence on public opinion makes it indispensable to the success of Nigeria’s economic and tax reforms.

He urged journalists to go beyond surface reporting by fully acquainting themselves with the new tax laws, insisting that effective communication of reforms can only come from a deep understanding.

“In Latin, we say, nemo dat quod non habet, you cannot give what you do not have. If we must speak and enlighten the public about these reforms, then it is important that we first understand them ourselves,” Olarinde said.

He stressed that poor or shallow communication often distorts the objectives of reforms and may create misconceptions among citizens.

According to him, the FIRS is ready to support the media with technical information and resources that will enable them to provide accurate and balanced reporting.

“This engagement is very important to us. We want you to listen, take something back home, and continue to educate Nigerians. On our part, we are happy to support you with the necessary information and resources,” he added.

Olarinde commended the organisers of the event for creating the platform, describing it as timely and essential in bridging knowledge gaps between policymakers and the public.

He assured that under Dr. Adedeji’s leadership, the FIRS will remain open and accessible to the media as partners in national development.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) threw its weight behind ongoing tax reforms in Nigeria, urging the government to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in their implementation.

Executive Director of CISLAC, Auwal Ibrahim Musa Rafsanjani, said the reforms, if properly implemented, would strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal position and ensure that taxes serve the interests of citizens rather than being diverted through loopholes and weak enforcement.

“Nigeria is losing a lot of revenue due to tax avoidance, evasion, and the failure of international corporations operating in our country to meet their obligations. In addition, we have seen a situation where multiple government agencies want to play the role of tax collectors, creating exploitation and dual taxation. A unified, transparent system is urgently needed,” he said.

He noted that women and vulnerable groups often bear the brunt of unfair tax practices, stressing that a fairer and more equitable regime would address such imbalances.

While commending the House of Representatives for initiating dialogue on the reforms, Rafsanjani urged the Senate to organise a similar engagement to deepen public awareness.

According to him, many Nigerians still lack adequate understanding of the provisions of the new tax laws, which makes sensitisation and education critical.

“It is not enough to legislate. We must ensure implementation in a manner that benefits the Nigerian people. The law must not be selective. The rich, the big men and women who have enjoyed government privileges, must also be taxed fairly. They must pay back to the Nigerian people and the Nigerian state,” he stressed.

Rafsanjani hailed the role of the press in provoking dialogue and promoting transparency, describing the lecture as timely and significant.

He, however, called on the government to intensify public engagement efforts to ensure widespread compliance and trust in the new system.

He also commended the leadership of the House of Representatives for what he described as visible progress in legislative activities, saying the initiatives reflect a clear commitment to accountability and reform.

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Jafaru Leko, has expressed support for the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reforms, describing them as a welcome development that will simplify taxation, boost revenue, and promote fairness in the system.

The lawmaker commended Dogara for his leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s legislative progress, recalling that several key institutions and initiatives, including the Trans-Pol framework, were established during his time as Speaker.

Highlighting key aspects of the reforms, he noted that they include the facilitation and simplification of taxation, value-added tax exemptions for small businesses, the establishment of a stronger revenue service, improved collaboration on joint revenue collection, and a renewed emphasis on economic growth, transparency, and accountability.

He stressed the need for regional balance in implementing the reforms to ensure no part of the country feels shortchanged. According to him, the public hearings conducted during the passage of the bills gave citizens the opportunity to understand both their rights and responsibilities under the new system.

“These reforms are a welcome improvement. They strike a balance between the government’s revenue needs and fairness to taxpayers. We must appreciate the President and support him in achieving this,” Yakubu stated.

He assured that lawmakers would continue to back policies that promote good governance and national development, pledging his commitment to supporting the implementation of the reforms.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, called on the government to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective deployment of tax revenues to infrastructure development as it pursues sweeping tax reforms under President Bola Tinubu.

Ike said the reforms represent bold steps toward modernizing Nigeria’s fiscal system, broadening the tax base, and reducing over-dependence on oil revenues.

“Tax reform is pivotal to Nigeria’s economic growth, fiscal sustainability, and social development. Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, we are witnessing bold steps aimed at modernizing and strengthening our tax system,” she said.

While commending the administration’s commitment, Ike emphasized that the success of the reforms depends on how well revenues are used to improve infrastructure and the quality of life for citizens.

“We must emphasize improved infrastructures, urging the government to deploy taxes effectively,” she noted.

The NUJ FCT Chair stressed the need for clear communication of the policies so Nigerians understand their rights and responsibilities.

She said the media has a central role in fostering dialogue and building public trust in the reforms.

“The media must provide accurate, unbiased information and foster public dialogue to build trust in these reforms. Transparency and accountability should guide every stage of implementation to protect the interests of all Nigerians,” she stated.

Ike also urged collaboration among all stakeholders, including lawmakers, the executive, civil society, and the media, to ensure the reforms deliver tangible benefits.

“Our collective goal must be a Nigeria with a robust economy, where tax policies contribute to sustainable development and improved quality of life for every citizen,” she added.

She commended the Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, for making the lecture a reality, describing it as a platform that will enrich public policy engagement.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, said taxation has become one of the most contentious issues in Nigeria today, with multiple narratives circulating about petroleum tax, data tax, and requirements such as the National Identification Number (NIN) for bank operations.

He said the newly introduced Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture is designed to bridge the gap between the legislature and the public by simplifying parliamentary activities and clarifying national issues.

“As journalists, the mirror of society and agenda setters, we believe this forum offers a unique opportunity to unpack these grey areas and simplify parliamentary activities for Nigerians,” he said.

The Press Corps chairman explained that the lecture aims to create a platform where distinguished parliamentarians, past and present, can share knowledge and provide clarity on topical national issues through the lens of the legislature.

“This is vital, because the legislature remains the most misunderstood arm of government in Nigeria,” he added.

Onadiran described the inaugural guest lecturer, former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, as a statesman whose insights would enrich discourse on tax reforms and national development.

“As Speaker of the 8th House of Representatives, he presided over the passage of historic bills, set legislative records, and distinguished himself as a bridge-builder committed to deepening democracy and promoting good governance,” he noted.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture, Philip Nyiam, said the initiative marks a new chapter for the Press Corps, positioning journalists as agenda setters and contributors to national development beyond routine reporting.

Nyiam said the Press Corps was determined to expand its role by enlightening Nigerians on issues of national interest.

“This is a novel in the history of the House Press Corps. It is part of efforts to change the narrative where journalists are seen as only reporting press releases, statements and conferences. As the watchdog of society, we are also agenda setters and we also enlighten society on key issues of national interest,” he stated.

He explained that the lecture was organised to demystify President Tinubu’s tax reform agenda, which has sparked apprehension and debate since the law came into effect.

According to him, the event provides a platform to address controversies around the reforms and their place in the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.

“This will be the contribution of the Press Corps to the growth of our nation and the sustenance of democracy and good governance,” Nyiam added.

He said the choice of the guest lecturer, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the 8th House of Representatives and current Chairman of the National Credit Guarantee Company Ltd., was deliberate, given his experience, courage, and record of legislative achievements.

Nyiam expressed confidence that the deliberations would enrich national discourse on tax reforms and governance.
