Kebbi federal lawmakers accuse Malami of peddling falsehood, seek arrest

The Kebbi caucus in the National Assembly has accused former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, of engaging in falsehood capable of breaching the peace in Kebbi state in particular abd the nation at large.

Former Governor and leader of the caucus, Senator Adams Aliero asked security agents to arrest and prosecute the former Minister of trying to create an atmosphere of chaos in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus at a news conference in Abuja, Aliero accused Malami of importing political thugs into the state capital from Sokoto and other neighboring communities to attack the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, leading to a violent clash between his supporters and APC members in the state.

He described as baseless a petition dated 10th September , 2025 by Malami and pledged support for Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State on his tiredness efforts to maintain law and order in the State.

Flanked by two Senators and members of the House of Representatives, Senator Aliero said: “The attention of the Kebbi State APC National Assembly Caucus has been drawn to a petition authored by the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, dated 10th September 2025, in which he alleged that His Excellency, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), Governor of Kebbi State and other political actors are involved in Importation of political thugs, Foreign Mercenaries and Clandestine Arms Deals in the state.

“We wish to categorically state that these allegations are false, unfounded and politically motivated. They represent a desperate attempt by Mr. Malami, now leader of an imaginary opposition party in Kebbi State, to undermine the peace, progress and stability that our people currently enjoy under the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris.

“Ironically, it is on record that during Malami’s recent condolence visit to Birnin Kebbi, he hired thugs from Sokoto, Koko and Rara to accompany him into the state capital. These thugs, under his watch, attacked the APC State Secretariat with stones while chanting ‘One term’ against the Governor.

“Their actions led to violent clashes with APC supporters — an unprecedented development in Kebbi politics, which has always been known for its peaceful nature and culture of mutual respect. This incident alone speaks volumes about who is truly attempting to sow chaos and disrupt the peace of our state.

“At no time has the Kebbi State Government, nor the APC family, been involved in clandestine activities or linked with terrorist groups, as mischievously signed personally by the former Chief Law Officer of the Federation and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“Kebbi remains one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria today, owing to deliberate investments in security, collaboration with security agencies and the overwhelming support of our patriotic citizens. It is important to note that the state Governor has demonstrated great Capacity and performance in the Security sector above all expectations and this is responsible for the Peace that the state has enjoyed compared to other states since the Governors assumption of Office

“We call on Nigerians to see Malami’s petition for what it truly is — a smear campaign laced with dangerous rhetoric intended to incite fear and distract from his dwindling political relevance. Resorting to alarmist narratives and unverified claims about foreign mercenaries and terrorism is not only irresponsible but also reckless, especially coming from a former top law officer of the federation.

“The Caucus further urges security agencies to focus their efforts on genuine threats to national security and not be drawn into partisan theatrics.

“We reaffirm our unwavering support for all security agencies working tirelessly to keep our borders safe and our communities peaceful and this sort of negative narratives are designed to undermine the efforts of the security agencies. We urge you not to be deterred. We also urge you to invite to invite Malami to substantiate his allegations.

“As elected representatives of the people of Kebbi State, we stand solidly behind Governor Nasir Idris and the APC administration. Together, we remain committed to delivering good governance, strengthening democracy and protecting the peace and dignity of our state.”

Also speaking, Senator Garuba Musa Maidoki(Kebbi South) described the APC as a peaceful party, saying “We want to put it on record that Malami’s house is less than 50 meters from the APC state headquarters, and if APC is a violent party, we would have had so much clashes between him and our people. But it had never happened until this incident came with a convoy, campaign style, and that sequence to that convoy.

“The national chairman of the INEC has warned that the political campaign has not started. It’s a campaign style moving in order to provoke our people. And we challenge him to produce the evidence that our party is importing weapons. He says he has the evidence. We are not a dangerous people.”

Senator Ndubueze urges medical, dental practitioners to champion public well-being

  • SAN gives CNA ultimatum to facilitate Natasha’s resumption or face contempt, other charges

SAN gives CNA ultimatum to facilitate Natasha’s resumption or face contempt, other charges

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Michael Jonathan Numa, has given the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana a five-day ultimatum to facilitate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resumption at the Senate or face legal action for contempt  and other constitutional breaches in both his personal and official capacity.

Numa of M.J. Numa & Partners LP made this threat in his reply to a letter by the CNA to Akpoti-Uduaghan, in which he told her that despite the expiration of her six months suspension, she cannot resume legislative duties because of the pendency of her case before the Court of Appeal.

Numa, who said he was acting as counsel to Akpoti-Uduaghan, said the CNA’s action amounts to delayed tactics to deny her client access to her office to resume her legislative duties.

He said: “Assuming without conceding that the suspension was valid, it was imposed for a fixed term of six months commencing on 6th March 2025.

“That term expired on or about 6th September 2025. At that point, the Senate became functus officio and lost any power to extend, enlarge, or reinvent the punishment.

“Any attempt to prevent her resumption beyond the expiry of the penalty, amounts to punishing her twice for the same alleged misconduct.

“As Clerk to the National Assembly, you are not an elected member of the Senate. Your functions are purely ministerial: to record, transmit, and implement decisions duly made by the Senate or directed by the courts.

“To the best of our client’s knowledge, no Senate resolution exists extending our client’s suspension or imposing any new sanction from the same alleged misconduct.

“Your letter fails to disclose on whose directive you purported to act. By assuming powers you do not possess, you have acted ultra vires, and placed both yourself personally and your office in contempt of the Constitution and binding judicial orders.

“In light of the foregoing, we hereby demand that you immediately facilitate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resumption of her legislative duties without further obstruction.

“Take notice that failure to comply by Monday, 15th September 2025, will leave us with no alternative but to initiate proceedings against you personally and in your official capacity.

    “Such proceedings will include, but are not limited to: Committal for contempt;

Disciplinary action for breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers; Liability for instigating breach of the peace with potential implications for national security; and any other remedies available to our client under the law.

“We strongly advise that you reconsider your untenable stance and comply with the Constitution and extant judicial orders.”

Numa in his letter dated September 10, 2025, and titled: “Re:Re: Notice of Resumption” said the position conveyed by the CNA in his letter referencing sub-judice was untenable.

“The letter reads in part: “We are Counsel to Senator Natasha Hadiza Akpoti-Uduaghan, the duly elected Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District, and on whose behalf we write in response to your above-referenced letter.

Read Also: Natasha: ‘Why journalists should educate Nigerians on Senate rules’

“Our client acknowledges receipt of your letter dated 4th September 2025, with reference number NASS/CNA/29/VOL.1/41, wherein you asserted that the Clerk of the National Assembly cannot take any administrative action towards her planned resumption on the ground that the matter is ‘sub judice and until a final judicial pronouncement is taken and the Senate formally reviews the suspension in light of the Court pronouncement.’

“It is either ill-advised or deliberately contrived to deprive our client of the constitutional mandate freely bestowed upon her by the constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District, and therefore amounts to a politically expedient attempt to subvert the sovereign will of the people.

“It is imperative to restate that our client’s right to resume her parliamentary duties, after the expiration of her fixed-term suspension, is rooted in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and cannot be abridged by administrative fiat or internal Senate maneuverings.

“Sections 68 and 69 of the Constitution circumscribe the limited circumstances under which a Senator’s seat may be declared vacant. Nowhere does the Constitution empower the Clerk or even the Senate itself to, by unilateral action, extinguish the sovereign will of the electorate.

“The content of your letter, with respect, amounts to a convenient invocation and misuse of the sub judice rule, tailored to suit the shifting narrative of the Senate leadership.”

Ulamas hold prayers for Tinubu’s, Barau’s success in Kano

Ulamas and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 44 local government areas of Kano State on Thursday held prayers and animal sacrifice for divine guidance and success of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The gathering also prayed for the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, to win the governorship election in Kano in 2027.

The spiritual event, held at Gidan Baban Liya, Kurna, Kano municipal, was organised by the Tinubu/Barau/Atah Movement, chaired by Mohammed Sabiu Nuhu.

The group, which tipped the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Yusuf Atah, as Barau’s running mate for APC governorship campaign, explained that the Movement’s mission was to rally political support and solicit votes for the president and senate president ahead of 2027 general election.

Highlight of the occasion was the slaughter of a ram for Allah (God) and a Special Islamic Prayer Session, led by Musa Babaliya, involving hundreds of Ullamas, mosques Imams, women and Qur’an reciting children.

The prayer was for God, who gives leadership, to give the APC leaders electoral victory in 2027, the organisers said.

Speaking to reporters, the Convener, Hon. Seyi Olorunsola said:“We are undertaking this spiritual aspect to have President Tinubu secure his second term election, and for Senator Barau Jibrin to win the governorship seat in Kano in the next election.”

“President Tinubu has done incredibly well in just two years in office; look at the road projects, decline in food prices, employment opportunities and above all his efforts in tackling security challenges.

“In the last few years Nigerians who were crying of insecurity and high prices of essential commodities are now beginning to laugh, as they see real changes.

“We have everything it takes to deliver the president in Kano for the second term. Tinubu is a man of his words, who has kept faith and promises with the people and we are grateful indeed.”

On why Senator Barau Jibrin should fly the APC banner in the state, Olorunsola explained that he is the strongest person who can take over power from NNPP at the polls.

According to him, the Minister of State for Housing (Atah) as Barau’s running mate will be a sure ticket.

“Don’t forget that in the 2023 election we had problems in Kano Central because the current governor, Abba Yusuf, comes from that zone. Thank God, President Tinubu in his wisdom, appointed Yusuf Abdullahi Atah, who is also from Kano Central, as minister of state. Now, Atah, a former Speak of the state, is the best person to checkmate the governor in Kano Central.

“Also, while Kano North has Barau Jibrin with Kano Southern district having Senator Kawu Sumaila, by our calculation, the APC campaign team for 2027 election in Kano will be so formidable that it will cruise to victory with ease,” Olorunsola said.

Also speaking, Saminu Khalid Abdullahi, who is the Sarkin Yaki Matasa, said “the Tinubu/Barau/Atah (TBA) Movement is a new support group established with the objective of mobilising grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu, Barau and Atah, while rallying citizens behind their laudable efforts in governance and nation-building, as we approach the 2027 general elections.”

ADC: Court to hear suit against Mark, Aregbesola, others Monday

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed a hearing for Monday in a suit challenging, among others, the legitimacy of the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Justice Emeka Nwite chose the date in a ruling on September 4 in which he refused to grant an ex parte motion filed by Nafiu-Bala Gombe, a former Deputy National Chairman of ADC, and moved by his lawyer, Michael Agber.

Justice Nwite ordered Gombe to serve the motion on the respondents – Mark and others – to enable show cause why the motion should not be granted.

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025 has the ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Chief Ralph Nwosu as defendants.

In the motion filed on September 2, Gombe is seeking three principal reliefs.

He wanted an order of interim injunction restraining the 4th defendant (INEC) from recognising the 2nd (Mark) and 3rd (Aregbesola) defendants as the national chairman and national secretary of the first defendant (ADC) pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

Gombe is also seeking an order of interim injunction restraining the 2nd and 3rd defendants and their cohorts from parading themselves as National Chairman and National Secretary of the 1st defendant, pending hearing in the motion on notice already filed and served in this matter.

He equally wanted an order restraining the 4th defendant/ respondent from recognising and or dealing with the 2nd and 3rd defendants.

  • CDS, service chiefs have made tremendous gains in war against terrorism, banditry – Agbese

CDS, service chiefs have made tremendous gains in war against terrorism, banditry – Agbese

…hails CNS, COAS as outstanding officers globally respected for their performance

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has lauded the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and the service chiefs for what he described as tangible and strategic gains in Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism, banditry, and other crimes threatening national stability.

Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, said the current military leadership has reinvigorated counter-insurgency and counter-banditry operations in a manner that is restoring public confidence.

He insisted that recent calls in some quarters for the removal of the service chiefs were “propaganda warfare” from terrorist networks, designed to demoralise troops and distract the public from ongoing successes.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on his way to an international engagement, the UK-trained lawyer urged Nigerians to resist narratives that weaken the morale of fighting forces.

“The service chiefs have given us clear evidence that Nigeria can win this war. The terrorists and their enablers understand this, so they resort to psychological warfare. Their demand for a change of leadership is not for Nigeria’s benefit — it is a survival tactic for terror,” Agbese said.

He singled out General Musa for praise, pointing to his coordination of joint military operations and his ability to align the different services under a unified counter-terrorism framework.

According to him, the hosting of the African Defence Chiefs’ Summit in Abuja in August was a landmark achievement that showed Musa’s vision extended beyond Nigeria to the continent at large.

“That summit was not just a gathering; it was a statement. Nigeria, under General Musa, showed leadership by convening African militaries to discuss African solutions to African problems,” Agbese said.

Agbese also commended the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for his determined fight against oil theft, illegal refining, and maritime crime.

He said the Navy’s successes in protecting pipelines and curbing smuggling have translated directly into improved revenue inflows for the government.

“The Chief of Naval Staff has demonstrated uncommon commitment in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain. His leadership in curbing pipeline vandalism, oil theft, and other maritime crimes has not only secured vital national assets but also restored confidence in our waters. Today, illegal oil smuggling is no longer the thriving industry it once was, thanks to his strategic innovations and the dedication of naval officers under his command,” Agbese said.

“By protecting the nation’s blue economy, the Chief of Naval Staff has helped to stabilise government revenue at a time when Nigeria’s economic survival depends on it. His efforts resonate far beyond our shores, earning him respect in the global naval community. I commend him for showing that with vision and discipline, our armed forces can deliver solutions that transform both our economy and our security.”

On the role of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Agbese, was emphatic that his field-driven leadership style has begun to turn the tide in troubled theatres of operation.

He said Oluyede’s tactical innovations and insistence on officers leading from the front have boosted morale among soldiers and shaken the confidence of insurgents and bandits.

“General Oluyede is not a desk officer; he is on the ground with the troops. His operational strategy has degraded terrorist enclaves in the North-East and weakened bandit networks in the North-West. Communities are regaining confidence because they see the Army’s presence and feel its renewed vigour,” Agbese observed.

He added that Oluyede’s outreach to local communities in conflict zones has also created fresh avenues for intelligence-gathering, which is proving decisive in anticipating and thwarting attacks.

“Security cannot be won by bullets alone; it requires the trust of the people. General Oluyede understands this and has fostered the kind of community collaboration that gives our troops a critical advantage,” he said.

Agbese, who is also a member of the Pan-African Parliament, pledged to use his continental platform to push for deeper regional defence cooperation.

“I will present model laws at the forthcoming Pan-African Parliament plenary in Johannesburg. Nigeria must not only lead the fight with strength on the battlefield but also with intellect at the policy level,” Agbese said.

He explained that the PAP develops laws for domestication across the continent, adding: “There is no better time to design a continental framework for combating insecurity than now, when Nigeria’s security architecture has taken the lead and is yielding results.”

On calls for the sack of the service chiefs, the deputy spokesperson said Nigerians must reject the “propaganda of despair.” According to him, those amplifying such calls are unwittingly aiding a terrorist strategy.

“Our service chiefs are among the finest officers in Africa today. They are respected globally for their professionalism and results. To call for their removal now is to sabotage the progress we are making. We cannot allow terrorists to set our agenda,” he declared.

Agbese urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support for the armed forces while holding leaders accountable through constructive engagements.

  • Ogun 2027: Adeola’s burgeoning strength and fears of others

Ogun 2027: Adeola’s burgeoning strength and fears of others

    By Olanrewaju Fatunmbi

An ideal of good governance begins with the selection of candidates for an election. It is the most critical starting point for a healthy democracy. If the selection process is transparent, free, fair, and credible, emerging contestants will not only be accountable to the people, but they will also be responsive to their needs. Being responsive to the needs of the populace is seeking the happiness of the greatest number of people.

On the other hand, in a system where candidates are chosen in a backroom deal by a political godfather, their primary allegiance is not to the electorate, but to the person who put them there. They are accountable to a single individual or a small clique, not the wider populace.

A transparent primary election forces a candidate to campaign and win the trust of party members and, by extension, the public. This makes them accountable to the people who voted for them. If a candidate secures the nomination through a fair and transparent process, he will be less indebted to special interests, and he is more likely to serve the public good.

In Nigeria, one of the reasons for the growing culture of impunity in governance is the manipulation of the leadership selection process and a lack of a level playing field. Almost all political parties have been criticized for a lack of internal democracy and barefaced imposition of candidates, which has become a rule rather than an exception.

If the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State is genuinely desirous of a seamless succession process, the leadership of the party must wash its hands off any form of manipulation that could trigger internal disaffection. A desperate attempt by some individuals to manoeuvre the selection process for the governorship candidate of the party has been uncovered.

It behoves the stakeholders to halt the power-play intrigues in the interest of the sustenance of peace and unity within the rank and file of the party. Experience has taught us enough lessons about anointing an unpopular candidate. We cannot afford to repeat the same mistake because Ogun State deserves nothing short of a capable successor who can consolidate the legacy of the current administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Not crass opportunistic individuals who want power for self-aggrandizement at all costs. For continuity, we need a refined mind, a capable individual, imbued with the right leadership values, requisite knowledge, experience, and a proven track record of good performance. Someone who understands the technicalities of governance, rather than an unprepared individual who lacks a clear vision for the next level of development and economic prosperity for all and Sundry.

One of the leading contestants for the governorship race, who has a commanding height, encompassing all the right qualities to lead the state, is Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (aka Yayi). His name resonates across all sections of the state. His towering leadership capacity is evident in various projects he has facilitated across all sectors, including education, economy, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, human capital development, job creation, youth and women empowerment, among others.

Having the capacity to govern is more than academic qualifications or mere political patronage. While academic qualifications and a deep understanding of policy are very important, they are just a part of the puzzle. It’s a combination of other critical variables like experience, emotional intelligence, vision and strategic thinking, right exposure, courage, decisiveness, integrity, trust in grassroots connection, and commitment to effective service delivery.

Senator Adeola’s representation track record embodies these virtues. Leveraging his extensive legislative experience and connection with his constituents, he has acquired an in-depth understanding of the technicalities of governance. He has spent over two decades in the legislature, giving him a deep understanding of the challenges of governance at different levels.

He was a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly from 2003 to 2011. During this time, he was instrumental in the enactment of the law that significantly boosted Lagos’s internal revenue, a clear demonstration of his grasp of fiscal policy.

Thereafter, he served in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015, where he chaired the powerful House Committee on Public Accounts. As a two-term Senator, representing Lagos West from 2015 to 2023 and currently representing Ogun West since 2023, combined with his position as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations in the 10th Senate, he is currently playing a key role that gives him a deep understanding of the national budget and fiscal management.

Beyond his legislative experience, he is a chartered accountant, a qualification that sets him apart as a technocrat with a strong command of financial matters. His professional background and legislative experience, particularly in finance and public accounts, are seen by his supporters as qualities that are essential for a governor who will be responsible for managing the state’s finances and driving economic growth.

A major factor in Yayi’s rise is his position as a champion for the Ogun West senatorial district, which has never produced an elected governor.

He is seen as a unifying figure for the Yewa/Awori people, who have long felt marginalized in the state’s political landscape. His move from Lagos to contest in Ogun in 2023 was a powerful statement of his commitment to his ancestral home.

Critical stakeholders in his Senatorial District, including traditional rulers, prominent figures, and grassroots supporters, see his gubernatorial bid not just as a personal ambition but as a political movement to correct a historical injustice and ensure equity in the state.

Above his other contenders, he has a strong grassroots following, which he has cultivated through numerous empowerment programs and infrastructural projects in his senatorial district. These initiatives, which include scholarships, financial support for traders, and the facilitation of public infrastructure, have earned him immense goodwill and a reputation as a leader who is in touch with the needs of the people.

Additionally, Senator Adeola has the political machinery and war chest necessary to successfully contest the governorship race. Having served in different political capacities, he has built a formidable political machinery and has the financial resources to mount a serious and competitive campaign. His wide network and influence extend beyond his senatorial district, as he has worked to build alliances in Ogun Central and Ogun East.

His formidable profile is based on his impressive political resume, his professional background as an accountant, his position as the leading voice for the Ogun West agenda, and his demonstrated ability to mobilize grassroots support. He is a key figure in the APC’s succession battle, and his ability to navigate the complex internal party politics will be a decisive factor in the 2027 elections.

That implies that there must be a level playing field rather than crooked manipulation of the process in favour of a self-anointing candidate. It is only a free, fair, and credible process that can guarantee internal cohesion and a genuine sense of belonging for all and Sundry.

One strong factor that is going to work in favour of Senator Adeola is the political capital he brings to bear in the Ogun State governorship race. His support base, particularly in his home senatorial district of Ogun West, is not just a collection of voters but a well-organized and deeply motivated political machine.

His candidacy is inextricably linked to the historical injustice of the Ogun West senatorial district never having produced an elected governor. This is a powerful, unifying narrative that transcends party lines and personal affiliations within the district.

By championing this cause, he has positioned himself as the standard-bearer for the aspirations of the Yewa/Awori people. This gives him a solid, emotionally charged support base that is highly important to his success.

Yayi has built a robust political structure within Ogun West, capable of mobilizing voters and delegates. This is not just a matter of having supporters but having an organized and disciplined team that can deliver votes when it matters most.

The political capital Adeola has in his home base is a major advantage. It is a potent combination of a powerful emotional narrative and a well-organized political machinery. This makes him a formidable force in the governorship race and a candidate who cannot be underestimated, as his political strength is built on a foundation of both a committed and grateful electorate.

How Oyo APC can bounce back, by Oseni

The Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Dr. Aderemi Oseni, represents Ido/Ibarapa Constituency. He spoke with reporters in Lagos on the Federal Government’s infrastructure battle, voter registration, challenges confronting Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and preparations for 2027 governorship poll

Amid the rift in the Oyo APC, you set up the Remi Oseni Committee of Friends (ROCOF). Does this suggest a lack of confidence in your party?

This is not so in any way. ROCOF is not a rival to APC. And it can never be. Rather, it is an initiative that will complement what our party is doing in Oyo State. The vision transcends Oyo State, though it started there. It is a movement we are using to mobilise support for the reelection of President Tinubu in 2027 and as well for my own political aspiration. Its membership transcends one political party,  religious group or ethnic nationality. It is a movement of likeminds that resolve to mobilise support for President Tinubu and I. The reason is not far-fetched. The task ahead is huge. We cannot leave it to our great party alone. To achieve at least 75% voter turnout in 2027, we need to deploy diverse approaches to mobilise popular support for all our candidates. In most cases, many candidates don’t really succeed during elections. This happens because most people are induced to vote against the popular and right candidate. Some party members will collect money from different candidates and engage in anti-party activities. They work for another candidate while on another party’s campaign train for an election. But when you have a movement like ROCOF that mobilises people for a definite cause; educate them properly and encourage them to perform their civic duty, the outcome of the process will be different and outstanding. We are bringing together people who believe the success of their candidate during and after elections are their priority. This is basically what we are doing with ROCOF in Oyo State and beyond.

The performance of the APC during the last bye-election was not impressive by all standards.  Why did the APC lose the by-election?

First of all, let me educate you a little about the last by-election in the Ibadan North. Our party did not understand that they were running a by-election. As you all know, a by-election is not a conventional election. It is not like the general election. It is an election where you will be contesting with the ruling party in the state or the opposition party. It depends on who you are. Like us, we were contesting as the opposition party. But my party did not understand that aspect. I think this is the first challenge we had in that by-election. Also,  if you want to fight against the ruling party in a state like Oyo State and win such an election, the strategy you deploy should be carefully designed to achieve the desired purpose. It should not be a strategy that was hurriedly put together. I think we got it wrong in this area. Already, we have learnt our lessons. We have also gone to the drawing board in preparation for the general election. I believe our approach to the 2027 elections will be different.

How are you and other party leaders building the Oyo APC to avoid the repeat of what happened during the by-election in the 2027 general election?

I am happy that everyone knows fundamental mistakes have been made. But how do we get out of where we are now? Like I said earlier, we have returned to the drawing board already. It has become our collective responsibility to work out how we can bring the Oyo APC back on track. We have realised our mistakes, particularly before and during the just concluded by-election. In that process, we managed to poll 8,312 votes compared to 18,404 scored by the PDP. This outcome does not really represent the standing of APC in Oyo State. It only reveals the weakness of our approach to the by-election. The good thing is that all of us are now working hard together to bring the APC back on track.

Where exactly does your interest lie with respect to 2027? Put differently, what is your next political aspiration?

I’m not overly ambitious. My primary interest is to see the Oyo APC back on track, first and foremost. That is what I am working for along with other leaders of our party. Once we resolve it and the party is positioned for a landslide in all political contests, then other things will fall in place automatically. To the glory of God, I’m a minister of God. As Apostle Paul said, I am what I am by His grace. My decision to venture into politics is basically to serve the people and nothing more. If I’m privileged, I will serve wholeheartedly. If I’m not privileged, the decision of my party prevails. That does not mean I will quit my party. This suggests that my aspiration to serve is a do-or-die one. But when desirability is not available, availability becomes desirable. That is the reason I chose to present myself to support the country as a nation. People always believe Christians have no business in politics. But I have challenged that notion because politics is the business of governance, and it is not for people who have nothing to offer the people or who do not have the interest of the people at heart. It is not meant for everybody, but for those who can make a difference in power. If you leave it to the people that are available, you will be governed by anybody who presents himself for the available office. If you’re a medical doctor, you cannot be allowed to become a governor on that basis alone. You must be sponsored by a political party as required by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).  If you now leave it only to people that are available, we will be managed by mediocre. That is why we are where we are today.

Specifically, are you interested in becoming Governor of Oyo State, given the pivotal role you are playing to unite the leaders of the APC? Or do you plan to return to the House of Representatives or the Senate?

This question means you have been following what I have been saying all this time. In life, if you want to be great, you must finance greatness. If you are not ready to finance it, there is no way you can be great. What I am doing currently is to position myself for higher responsibility. It is to present myself for my party and let them know that when there are challenges, it is not that we do not have what it takes to win the election. All they need to do is to look inward and search the right candidates for all available political offices, whether executive office or legislative seats. That is what I mean by when desirability is not available, availability will become desirable. As it is now, what I have built for my party now through ROCOF is enough for us to win any election any day. That is my own way of helping the Oyo APC apart from peace initiatives we are taking to put the party back on the path to victory. Already, we have over 200,000 members. All of them with Identity Cards. What I’m doing is to tell people that governance is not an exclusive club. Governance is more than desiring an office, neither is it a birthright. That is why we have to develop a capacity for our people to enable them to understand they can have better opportunities. We also need  to understand that the governorship election is not a tea party. You do not just wake up and desire to become the governor of your state. You cannot come out without adequate preparation and announce to the whole world that you want to contest for the Office of the Governor. It is more than a mere declaration. It requires a lot of qualities and preparations.  Any person, who desires such a position, will get to a point when he will be convinced that it is time for him to move forward. If you fail to lay a solid foundation for the aspiration, I can tell you sincerely that it will not go far. As for me, we have not got to the point of declaration. When we get there, the path will be clearer. That is why I believe it is not a tea-party affair. If you want to be a governor, you need to lay a foundation, a solid one indeed. You need to connect with the grassroots, the party, and with the leaders. It is deep. It is not just about having the financial strength. Those factors must be well earned. When those qualities have been earned, you do not need to be told again that you are ripe for the contest. It is just a common sense that you must know if you are contesting for the governorship election. As a politician, you will be able to identify key factors – strength, weakness, opportunities, and threat. That is what we call SWOT analysis, which means those who can poll more votes or secure popular support should be presented for the general election. I know in the couple of months to come, we will know what to do. I need to equally say that this is not a do-or-die affair. If the opportunity presents itself, I do so. Whatever the party leaders want is what I will do.

Ibadan, which falls to Oyo South, has consistently been producing governors in Oyo State, except on one or two occasions. Why is Ibadan always against governorship zoning to Oyo Central or Oyo North?

Honestly, this is one of the questions people have been asking me in recent times. For me, that is grace. You cannot fight grace in life. It is not the responsibility of the Ibadan people to produce governors from Ibarapa or Oke Ogun. It is the responsibility of the elders of the state to come together; meet the people of Ibarapa, Ibadan and Okeogun as well as work out an understanding on how to rotate Office of the Governor among the zones. It is possible, but we have to be deliberate and decisive about such an arrangement. With a clear understanding among the elders of the state, we can rotate it zone by zone. Look at the Niger Delta, for instance. It is not the business of Nigeria for somebody to be located in Bayelsa or River State. If we are making noise in Ibadan that they are not sharing oil derivation with us, then you will understand where I’m coming from. That is about grace. All oil funds they are receiving on a regular basis was by way of grace. I have given more than enough advice on how Okeogun or Ibarapa can produce governors in Oyo State. If I were the Governor of Oyo State, I would be the one who could hand power over to somebody in Okeogun. If Governor Seyi Makinde has already planned to hand over somebody from Okeogun or Ibarapa, you do not need to change that narrative. It is his mental decision. If I’m the one in charge, I will meet with all the notable Ibadan indigents. I will convene a summit where I will educate them on the need to allow other senatorial districts to produce governors. When I finish my tenure, I am going to hand over power to other parts of the states. You will bring them on board. You will negotiate it with them. You will discuss with them. You will now invite all the leaders from Okeogun. You arrive at a decision. The decision reached at the meeting will inform you of the way the incumbent administration will spread your projects. I think that is a possibility.

Do you think such an understanding can be brokered with the population of Ibadan?

The probability is very high if we bring all elders on boards and no attempt is made to reduce governance to sectional politics. One of the ways this can be done is, other zones – Ibadan, Okeogun, Ogbomosho, and Ibarapa – will organise a summit and decide to present a candidate who will contest for the Office of the Governor.

This is irrespective of the party to which the person may belong. Also, they will agree that there is no zone that will accept that their son should be deputy to any candidate. Once this happens, all the political parties will narrow their candidates to one zone. When the election comes, they can decide as a zone that irrespective of the number of votes that come from Ibadan, they will vote for the candidate that their zone has presented for the contest. If you look at the way our election is, Ibadan has about 40 percent of the total results. Okeogun has about 30% of the total votes. You must understand that they vote in blocks. This is due to the communal lifestyle where everyone relates peacefully. If you come to my federal constituency, there is a ward that 90% of the people there are non-indigenes. I have an idea of this due to my grassroots knowledge. If you are not on the ground, you cannot persuade the people to vote in this direction. But once they talk to themselves, they call it “Ibo Olojukan” (a uni-directional voting pattern). That is how other zones can produce governors in Oyo State.

You insinuated earlier that most votesAPC  got during the 2023 general election were through your effort and some members of the party. But we knew Governor Makinde helped President Bola Tinubu during the presidential election due to disagreement with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. It also appears like the governor may not work for President Tinubu in 2027 because of his presidential aspiration. Is it one of the reasons for the outcome of the last by-election in Ibadan North?

Let me quickly make some clarification at this point. First, I’m a modest person by all standards. Second, as I said, I’m a minister in the temple of God. As Apostle Paul said in the Scripture, we are what we are by His grace. In the 2023 election, Governor Seyi Makinde might have worked for APC, just like you have said. I did not say that. In my federal constituency, however, he did not do one single work. If he did, let him come and prove it with hard facts. I will tell you clearly, and it was in this constituency that the governor invited all the traditional rulers three days before the election and asked to work against me and ensure that I did not win the poll. I stand to be quoted. He embarked on this mission then because he clearly understood my strength among my people.

Did he campaign for Vice President Atiku?

Do you mean Governor Makinde? That is not my business. I contested the federal legislative election on the platform of the APC. I did not have to disturb myself about who was campaigning for this or that candidate. At that time, my commitment was to ensure that all candidates of the APC, including me, won their elections in Oyo State. Who was working was not my business. That is why we now set up ROCOF, a dynamic, non-political, non-religious, and non-ethnic forum that brings likeminds together for the rebirth of Oyo State and  Nigeria. At ROCOF, we are not distracted in any way. With what we have embarked upon, we project to have at least 500,000 members by the end of this year. Irrespective of who you are or whichever party you belong, I will be in a position, by the grace of God, to present to the Oyo APC massive support we have consciously mobilised through ROCOF. If Governor Makinde could leave his comfort zone and come to my constituency head office in Ido Local Government to appeal to all traditional rulers to work against me during the 2023 general election, it means we have to be more deliberate and strategic in our approach to the 2027 general election. Honestly, I try to be as civil as I can. It was the grace of God that didn’t turn his request into a crisis for the ruling party at that time because it was a game that was already closed. The same thing happened in the chairmanship election, I returned home and embarked on an aggressive campaign to ensure that I still delivered the two.

BAO’s victory will defy fake prophecy, says Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has said that the victory of Governor Biodun Oyebanji at the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary and next year’s election would defy fake prophecy by some prophets.

He said the political space has no room for what he described as psychological prophecies and empty predictions that lack genuine insight. Fayose said: “In Ekiti State’s political landscape, one thing is clear: Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s re-election is a foregone conclusion due to his impressive track record and the people’s faith in his leadership. The people of Ekiti have spoken loud and clear through their actions.”

The former governor said Oyebanji’s achievements speak for themselves, citing the reconnection of intra-state road networks, the restoration of electricity to abandoned communities, and the engagement of jobless youths as testaments to his commitment to development.

He said these tangible results, have restored the dignity of Omoluabi, a value that  Ekiti is known for.

Fayose said prophecies that attempt to influence the narrative are falling flat, particularly the predictions that seem to be more about taking advantage of people than providing genuine insight.

Stressing that prophecies are meant to reveal mysteries, not the obvious, he added: “You should have come with all these predictions before the 2022 gubernatorial election, not when the outcome is clear and known to those involved.”

Fayose said his assessment of the situation in Ekiti and belief in victory are based on Oyebanji’s achievements, insisting thst his re-election is certain.

He said the facts would speak for themselves instead of prediction by those laying claim to supernatural insight.

He said: “As Ekiti State prepares for the next phase of its development, it’s clear that Governor Oyebanji is the people’s choice. His leadership has earned him a mandate that transcends party lines, and his commitment to the people of Ekiti is unwavering. In the end, it’s Oyebanji’s performance that will be remembered, not empty prophecies.”
