  • Man, 56, two others remanded for ‘cocaine trafficking’

Man, 56, two others remanded for ‘cocaine trafficking’

Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday remanded Ezeanya Emeka Paul, 56, and two other persons in prison for alleged cocaine trafficking.

The two others are Obi Chukwukwnene Edwin, and a woman, AbdulRasheed Rashidat Olanike.

First defendant Paul is standing trial on a count of cocaine trafficking, second defendant Edwin on a count of heroin trafficking, while Olanike is facing two counts of cocaine and heroin smuggling.

The charges were preferred against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

During Paul’s arraignment, State prosecutor, Mr. Austin Nwagu, informed the court that the first defendant was arrested by the NDLEA after he was found in possession of 1.47 kilograms of cocaine at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said the defendant had been a passenger on a plane from Brazil to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), which made an emergency landing in Ikeja.

For the second defendant, State prosecutor, Mrs. Juliana Emabo, alleged that Obi was arrested with 1.575 kilograms of heroin, at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, last May 3, on his arrival from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania..

Mr. Abu Ibrahim, state prosecutor, informed the court that Olanike was arrested at the same airport, last May 18, with 970 grammes of heroin, and 155 grammes of cocaine, during an outward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline Flight to Guangzhou, China, through Addis-Ababa.

    The defendants denied the charge.

Justice Kuewumi found the oral bail applications of defence counsel, Mr. B. O. Aikhegbe and E. U. Okenji, without merit and granted the prosecutors’ application for remand.

Ezeanya was remanded till his trial date of September 29, while Olanike and Obi will be in prison custody till their trials begin on September 28, and October 19, respectively.

  • Court frees man after spending 11 years on death row

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has discharged and acquitted one Ganiyu Wahab, after spending 11 years on death row.

Wahab was arrested for murder and subsequently convicted and sentenced to death on July 2, 2007 in a judgment delivered by Honorable Justice Oluwayemi of a Lagos High Court.

Wahab  was accused of killing one Kolawole Lateef Alaran on January 23, 2005 by stabbing him with a broken bottle in the Agboyi area of Lagos State.

He was however set free following an appeal against his conviction and sentence, filed by the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP).

An erudite judgment delivered by a panel of Justice Abimbola Osarugue Obaseki- Adejumo of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division on July 13, 2016, set aside his conviction and death sentence.

The court held that the conviction of the appellant  was based on the evidence of the only eye witness called and the confessional statement of the appellant were erroneous as both evidences contained different facts.  The court further held that the prosecution failed to proof his case beyond reasonable doubt.

Wahab’s lawyer, Chino Obiagwu said: “This is another opportunity to re-iterate our calls for an in-depth re-evaluation and urgent overhauling of our Criminal Justice System, especially as it relates to the use of capital punishment. We cannot continue to be sentencing innocent persons to death, only for the appeal court to upturn the judgment after a decade or more”.

  • I didn’t know I was wanted, says robbery suspect

I didn’t know I was wanted, says robbery suspect

A 25-year-old armed robbery suspect, Alidu Shola, has expressed surprise that the police arrested him for stealing a tricycle without being caught in the act.

In his confession, Shola said: “I am a driver by profession. I came from Osun State. I was arrested in my area where I used to rest after my daytime job. I did not expect the police as my visitor. I was enjoying my drink when the police came. See, I really stole the motorcycle but it was a long time ago. I carried the Keke (tricycle) to where I later sold it to one Aboki N60, 000 and used the money to feed.

“It was through information that the police came after me. Even the Aboki who bought the tricycle has travelled back to the north. I cannot trace him.

Even on the operation for which I was arrested, my accomplice bolted with the things we got, including cash and phone. I have since stopped stealing and am busy driving a bus for somebody. I used to render N5, 000 to him every day. My route is Ojota to Ojodu Berger. I used to go home with N1, 500 or N2, 000 everyday and my conduct used to go home with the same amount because we share money equally (50-50).

However, the Officer in charge of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (O/C SARS), Chief Superintendent of Police Akinade Adejobi, said on July 1, 2016, a case of conspiracy and armed robbery as well as recovery of arms and ammunition was transferred from the Abattoir Divisional Police Headquarters, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos, involving with one suspect named Sunday Kunle. It was reported by one Prince Lukas of No. 10, Oko-Oba Road, Power Line, Agege, Lagos.

He added that on June 30, 2016 at about 9:00 p.m., two armed men entered her shop and robbed her of two laptop computers, six different types of phones and the sum of N280, 000 being the sales made for the day.

One of them was arrested with the help of her neighbours, and one locally made pistol, four live cartridges and one laptop was recovered from him while his partner took to his heels with the mentioned items.

The suspect paraded with Shola, and who identified himself as Sunday Kunle, aged 23, said: “I learnt to be a mechanic before my father died.

When I could not get money to build a workshop, my friends lured me into armed robbery. In my first attempt, I was arrested and sent to prison. I met Olamide in prison and he gave me his phone number when he left prison.

“When we met him, he had a gun. Two of us went for robbery and he (Olamide) escaped with the N280, 000, six phones, two laptops and I was arrested. We were a two-man gang; Olamide and me. I don’t know Shola Alidu. He is not my gang member. It is the same police handling my case that are in charge of his case. Our cases are different.”

Another suspect, Kingsley Asuquo, 27, said he was headed for his aunty’s shop when the victim saw him and told the mob that he was one of the men who robbed her. “I saw her running away from the gang and her phone fell down and helped her to pick it,” he said. “Instead of being grateful, she lied against me by telling the mob that I was among the robbers who attacked her. She claims that I took N15, 000 from her. I don’t even have up to N1, 000 in my pocket. I am from Akwa Ibom State. I am not a robber.”

  • Enugu bricklayer arrested for stealing generator

Enugu bricklayer arrested for stealing generator

Men of Enugu Police Command have arrested a bricklayer, Charles Okpata, for stealing a generator.

The suspect, who expressed regret for his action said he would not have ventured into stealing if he knew that he would not succeed.

He blamed his stealing habit on the devil.

It was gathered that the suspect had gone to a building site at New Haven, Enugu where he worked on July 13, 2016 at about 1:00 a.m. After gaining entrance, he allegedly stole a big capacity generating set and quietly rolled it off to a spot to hide it.

He was however intercepted by eagle-eyed officers on patrol based on a tip-off at about 2:00 a.m. at IBB Flyover along Enugu-Abakiliki Road, Enugu, while the generator was recovered.

The suspect is now helping the police in their investigations.

The state Commissioner  of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, applauded the efforts of his men and partnership with the public which led to timely passing of information to the officers patrol and held up the pace of robust patrol at all times in the state and its environs for a safe and secured environment.

  • Robber arrested wearing victim’s trouser

    Robber arrested wearing victim’s trouser

A 29-year-old armed robbery suspect, Femi Majekodunmi, who was caught in the trousers of the victim a few days after robbing him, has expressed surprise that someone else would identify the pair of trousers he bought from a second hand clothes market as his.

In his statement to the police, he admitted that he was not arguing that the clothing item was not stolen because it could have been taken by another gang. He was sure, however, that he bought the trousers from the open market, whether it was stolen or not.

Of the events leading to his arrest, Majekodunmi said: “The pair of trousers is my size and not the victim’s size. I bought the trousers from Super, a second hand clothes market, on July 5 this year. I was arrested at Egbeda, but the owner claimed that he was robbed at Banire area, near a church. The owner claimed that the robbers who attacked him collected his bag and phone on that fateful day. Even if you call me a robber, I bought these trousers. I am not saying that I cannot rob. I was not the one that robbed the man who claims to be the owner of the trousers.”

Parading the suspect, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said that the Lagos Police Command is in synergy with other law enforcement agents across Immigration,  Customs and others to make Lagos crime-free, and that the new Inspector General of Police intelligence policing agenda enhances their efforts in policing the state. He added that the command’s quick response to distress calls helped foil armed robbery.

The Second-in-Command, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmadu Adamu, said: “The preamble is this: On the June 6, 2016 at about 4:30 a.m., one Any Jacobs Martins of No. 17, Olorun Adaba Street, Egbeda, Lagos, while he was coming from his house to Alimosho Bus Stop at Raji Oba Street, Egbeda, Lagos, two men with guns on Bajaj motorcycle double-crossed him and pointed a gun at him.

“They ordered him to surrender all he had and robbed him of one Nokia 225 cellular phone valued at N15, 000, one Blackberry Z10 phone valued at N45, 500, one bag containing a pair of jeans trousers valued at N4, 500, one shirt valued at N3, 000, one Honor Huawei phone valued at N70, 000 and a wallet containing his office I.D. card, voter card, National I.D. card, some passport photographs and a cash sum of N10, 000. During the robbery, he was able to memorise the armed robbers’ features with the aid of the headlamps of oncoming vehicles, and, after the robbery, he reported the incident at the Gowon Estate Police Station on the fateful day.

“On the 5th day of July, 2016, while the complainant was walking along Kareem Laka Street, Egbeda, he saw and identified the jeans trousers inside the bag that the armed robbers took off him on one of the armed robbers. He quickly ran to the Gowon Estate Police Station and reported, which led to the arrest of the suspect, Femi Majekodunmi, aged 29.

“Also, on July 8, 2016 at about 5:00 a.m., one Ademola Omolola (a lady) of Flat Six, Block Three, 41 Road, Union Bank Quarters, Gowon Estate, Lagos while on her way to the office, along Ponle Bus Stop, Gowon Estate, Lagos, two armed men attacked her and robbed her of one Tecno phone valued at N4, 500 and a cash sum of N15, 000.

During the robbery, passers-by came to her rescue. One Kingsley Asuquo was arrested and the stolen phone recovered. The suspect was transferred to SARS for discreet investigation.

  • 22 feared killed as cult gangs unleash terror on Ogun communities

22 feared killed as cult gangs unleash terror on Ogun communities

Rasaq Ogundare’s lanky physique bellied his obsession with pulling the trigger when hunting for members of rival cult gangs in the Ijoko area of Ado Odo/Ota Local Government of Ogun State.

For many years, the 25-year-old school dropout and leading member of Eiye confraternity terrorised perceived opponents in the community until he was arrested by detectives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

Ogundare, aka Babalawo Poly, said he had killed some people, including one Tosin and Dare, who were Aiye cult boys in the community.

He narrated how friends in the Ijoko neighbourhood initiated him into cultism, saying:”I am a member of Eiye Confraternity. We have been terrorising Ijoko community and killing people for some time now. I joined the cult group about two years ago when some boys in the neighbourhood initiated me through beating and alcoholic drink.

“I have killed so many people, including one Tosin and Dare, who are members of Aiye Confraternity. The duo were deadly too, and we used to hunt for Aiye members because they can kill too. Whenever we attacked Aiye members, they would abandon their motorcycles and sundry items and we would sell them.”

In the neighbourhood of Owode, a rustic community also in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government, Ogun State, the mention of Ahmed Kazeem elicited fears among his peers and residents. His notoriety as a kingpin of Eye Confraternity is an open book, so much so that he flaunted his membership of the outlawed group like a wedding ring. But his trajectory of violence terminated albeit on a tragic note on July 2, 2016 after he was hacked and chased to death by members of Aiye Confraternity, a rival cult group.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the 28-year-old, popularly called T-Cabal, was ambushed and mutilated at dusk but still managed to escape from his assailants. He was however pursued until he fell into an abandoned soak away pit and died. His death brought to eight the number of his lieutenants killed by Aiye members, who have also lost not a few colleagues too in recent times.

Men of Sango Police Division, who foiled an attempt to give the cult lord secret burial and recovered his body, had a hectic time leaving the community following a blockade mounted by members of a rival group who insisted on taking the body of the slain youth away for unknown reasons.

Four days later, a barber identified simply as Chicago in the Iloye area of Temidire, was shot dead in broad daylight after suspected members of Aiye Confraternity posing as customers visited his salon. The late barber, who was said to have gone out at the time his killers got to his salon, was  called on his mobile phone by his assailants without an inkling that they were after his life. As soon as he arrived his shop, the men who rode to his salon on a motorbike dragged him out and pumped hot bullets into his body, while bystanders scampered into safety.

Sources within the community however revealed that Chigaco did not die but has fled to a neighbouring town where he is currently undergoing treatment for gunshot injuries.

Findings revealed that the notorious cultists have been holding sway in Joju, Temidire, Iloye, Ijoko, Sango, Owode and Plaza areas of the council area.

    Death by scoreline

The continuous cult war, according to findings, has festered because rival gangs derive joy in counting the number of casualties as a mark of supremacy because the number of members killed determines the supremacy or strength of one cult group over the others.

It will be recalled that one Tope Ajibade was shot dead by suspected Aiye cult boys in February, this year. The late Ajibade, a barber cum singer, was ambushed last Good Friday on Okewole Street, off Arigbabu Street in the Adalemo area of Sango-Ota on his way to church in company with his friends who also sustained gunshot injuries.

It was said that Aiye cult boys had rejoiced over the killing of the 25-year-old barber, claiming a 6-1 victory over Eiye Confraternity.

Penultimate week, three youths, including one Damilare and two others, were killed by suspected Eiye members in Iloye, who also proclaimed and celebrated a new ‘score line’ that gave them an edge over Aiye members.

Inside sources said it’s 14 -8 scoreline in favour of dreaded Eiye cult boys going by recent killings, some of which were not brought to the attention of the police by the parents of the victims and residents.

    Politics/transport unions factor

Investigations also revealed the political undertone behind the rivalry between the cult groups-Eiye, Aiye and Buccaneers. For example, Eiye Confraternity is said to be loyal to a dominant political party in the town, while Aiye works for a rival political party.

It was also learnt that Eiye members work for a particular transport union and an association of commercial motorcyclists otherwise called Okada to the chagrin of Aiye members, who have since resolved to exterminate their archrival in order to enjoy the spoils of loyalty to the political party and transport unions.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Powerful politicians are using the boys to intimidate their opponents. They give them money and provide ammunition which they use to attack perceived opponents within Ota and its environs. The cheap money they receive from politicians is the reason why they cannot engage in any legitimate endeavour or job.”

    Land grabbing/touting

Findings revealed that the cult boys also assist unscrupulous land grabbers in launching a barage of violence to take ownership of disputed property on retainership basis. It was gathered that the boys are paid between N40,000 to N50,000 monthly to ‘protect’ landed properties in Ota axis.

“Their leaders make not less than N300, 000 on the average monthly from land grabbing activities and touting at various motor and okada parks. Transport union leaders engage the services of the boys to perpetuate and consolidate themselves in office by sending them to attack and intimidate their opponents,” said a resident of Temidire, who declined his identity for security reasons.

The complicity of cult boys in land grabbing in Ota and adjoining communities was confirmed by Ogundare shortly after he was arrested.

He said:” I also take part in land grabbing activities and I work with a monarch’s  group to visit construction sites in the community. I don’t know whether my parents are aware of my arrest because they had warned me not to get involved in crime but I did not heed their warning until I was caught in the act.The reality of my parents’ homily has since dawned on me.”

    Robbery

Not a few cult boys have also been arrested for armed robbery and stealing lately. For example, Ogundare and his accomplice, Raimi Ogunkunle, 25, who were apprehended by police after a trail confessed to have robbed innocent residents of valuables, including motorcycles.

    Hideout

Members of Aiye Confraternity usually congregate at a hotel in the Iloye area, where chieftains of the group take decisions before visiting violence on rival gangs. The owner of the hotel, it was gathered, had worked for a former governor of the state but was arrested a few days ago by men of Sango Police Division.

The owner of the hotel, aka Roja, who was fingered by police as the godfather of Eiye cult boys has since been arrested alongside eight other suspected cultists and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Our correspondent gathered that Eiye members meet at a hideout owned by their alleged godfather cum leader, aka Jabot, who has also been arrested by the police and is currently detained at SCID office in Abeokuta.

    Arrest

In their unrelenting bid to contain the orgy of violence perpetrated by the cult boys, the police have made a number of arrests of members of cult groups and their godfathers.

In the last few weeks, no fewer than 26 Eiye and Aiye members have been apprehended by the Sango Police Division and Ota Area Command.

Earlier in the year, a former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sango Police Station, Mr. Saheed Egbeyemi, who is the current Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force on Sanitation and Special Offences, foiled a murder attempt by suspected Eiye boys on a groom on his wedding day. The suspects who had disguised as guests to the party were apprehended before they could strike in Ijoko community, following a tip off.

The Area Command also averted what would have been a bloodbath on July 7, following intelligence report that cult boys were planning to kill people to commemorate their anniversary.

Policemen were deployed in strategic parts of the town to prevent the cult boys from mixing blood with their feast by killing members of rival groups.

About 14 suspected cultists were rounded up before they could carry out their dastardly act. The list included: Shogbesan Iskil Oluwaseun; Olabisi Abidoye; Yinka Soyinka;Adeleke Afeez; Bosewoluwalonsola Afolabi; Mayowa Ademuyiwa; Adesayo Michael; Abine Monday; Oluwafemi Showunmi; Mathew Gabriel; Idris Muritala; Tunde Fatai; Ayo Usman and Durojaiye Sakiru.

Six of the suspected cultists: Mathew Gabriel, 28; Oluwafemi Showunmi. 19; Idris Muritala,20; Tunde Fatai,26; Ayo Usman,31 and Durojaiye Sakiru, who had allegedly confessed to being members of Eiye and Aiye cult groups, were yesterday arraigned for cultism and conspiracy at an Ota Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded at Ibara Prisons in Abeokuta, while the case has been adjourned to September 9.

About nine others, including Ajayi Babajide,27, aka Jabot; Rotimi Awodeyi, 50, aka Roja; Taiye Babalola,18,;Victor Uzor,21; Lagundoye Nurudeen,28;Adekunle Oladipo,50;Dare Awodeyi, 42; Kehinde Lawal, 33 and Imole Bamgbose,24, were also arrested  and are still being interrogated by operatives of SCID in Abeokuta.

Our correspondent gathered that the cult boys had also unleashed terror on innocent residents. A community leader who asked not to be named said a number of residents have been robbed by cult boys in Temidire, Iloye and other communities under the council area.

She said: “I want the state government to come up with adequate security measures to contain the killer gangs because they also robbed residents and shop owners after engaging themselves in a bloody fight.

“They dispossessed residents of valuables, including cash, phones and laptops before escaping from the scene on motorbikes.”

A number of residents were said to have relocated from the community for fear of being hit by stray bullets. A resident who identified himself simply as Fawole said the violent activities of the cult groups have taken a toll on social life in the affected communities.

He said:” We are no longer living in peace here anymore ever since criminal gangs who were chased out of some Lagos communities relocated to Sango. They have since been killing themselves and at times unsuspecting residents fall victim of their mindless killings. Although the Ota Area Command and police stations around have been carrying out constant raids and patrol in the communities to checkmate the boys and other criminal elements, but there is need for proactive measures to tackle the menacing cult boys and flush them out of Ado Odo/Ota council area.”

The spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) was not available for comments.

Calls made to his mobile phone number by our correspondent were not answered, while he did not also respond to a text message sent to his phone number at press time.

  • 32-yr-old found dead inside soak away pit shortly after dinner

32-yr-old found dead inside soak away pit shortly after dinner

PALL of grief has descended on Odewale area of Opeilu in Agbado, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, after a man identified simply as Kamorudeen fell into a soak away pit and died.

The incident happened around 11 pm on Thursday June 30 during a visit to the toilet.

The 32-year-old commercial bus driver was said to have visited the toilet shortly after he had his dinner.

It was gathered that Kamorudeen’s distraught wife raised the alarm after her husband did not return from the toilet several hours later.

A search party was said to have yielded no result throughout the night until his body was discovered by one of his friends in the abandoned soak away pit at the back of their residence.

The recovery of his body was said to have  triggered a violent protest by his friends and associates, who queried why the landlord of the building did not cover the abandoned latrine pit for close to 15 years.

It was also said that Kamorudeen’s body was discovered with bodily injuries and blood, fuelling suspicion that he was probably killed and dumped inside the soak away pit.

A cross section of respondents who spoke in confidence with The Nation are however of the opinion that the deceased might have slipped into the d soak away pit.

The violent protest was said to have been contained by men of Agbado Police Station on the invitation of the community’s monarch, Chief Solomon Aina.

An elderly man who claimed to be Kamorudeen’s father told policemen at the scene that he was not willing to press charges against anyone over the unfortunate death of his son.

One of the friends of the deceased driver recalled his last moments saying:”We were together in the afternoon of the unfortunate day of the incident and ate cooked maize prepared by my landlord’s wife before he departed for his home in the evening to have his dinner, while I also visited him a few hours later on my way to a vigil in our church, which is a stone’s throw to his residence.

“We also had dinner together in his house. He finished his meal before me and left for the toilet to urinate at about 11 pm but did not return before I hurried up to church. I was in the middle of service when I was told on the telephone that my friend had not returned from the toilet and could not be found but some people prevailed on me to wait till the morning before joining in the search for his whereabouts.

“I left the church in the morning and headed straight to his residence to search for him. I brought out a long stick and used it to stir the abandoned soak away pit and found his body there.”

The spokesman of Ogun Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi did not revert to our correspondent as promised at press time.

  • Court remands 54-year-old man for defiling 11-year-old girl

A 54-year-old man, Gbenga Adebayo, has been remanded in prison custody by a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, for allegedly abducting and defiling an 11-year-old girl, Joke Aliu (not her real name).

It was gathered that Adebayo led the minor to his aged mother’s place in Usi-Ekiti, about 60 kilometres away from Ado-Ekiti, and held her captive for three weeks. He allegedly visited regularly and slept with her.

Adebayo at the same time joined the search team that went from one neighbourhood to the other to find the ‘lost’ girl in Ado-Ekiti.

As related by the girl afterwards, Adebayo promised to rescue her from her schoolteacher with whom she stayed in the Adebayo area of Ado-Ekiti, on the grounds that the teacher was harsh. “Gbenga Adebayo is my neighbour,” she said. “He used to ask me to buy things for him. One day, he approached me, saying he wanted to help me because my teacher was harsh on me. He said he would rescue me from my teacher and take good care of me. He then took me to his mother’s place in Usi-Ekiti. Whenever he comes there, he used to sleep with me. He has done this 10 times now.

“I was at his mother’s place for three weeks after which I refused to sleep with him again, and because of that, he decided to take me to my aunt’s place in Akure. He told my aunt that he found me in his mother’s place in Usi and decided to help me by taking me to her. He is the first man in my life.”

Commenting on the allegation, an aunt of the girl’s in Ado-Ekiti, Mrs Theresa Agboola, disclosed that the victim is an orphan, after losing both parents some years ago. She said: “The girl was staying with her female school teacher (name withheld) who lives in a rented apartment behind Olagold, opposite Ekiti State Teaching Hospital, (EKSUTH) in Adebayo area. About a month ago, June 5 precisely, the girl’s teacher had called to inform me that she (the girl) was missing and that the whole occupants in the house, including the suspect, Gbenga Adebayo, were searching for her.

“That continued till June 29, when my sister from Akure called to tell me that the girl was brought to her by a man whom she identified as the same Gbenga Adebayo. It was then we suspected foul play. We reasoned that if indeed Adebayo was sincere, he could not be the same man who was part of the search team for the girl for three weeks here in Ado-Ekiti and also be the one who would now take her to my sister’s place in Akure after finding her.

“We then reported the case to the police who promptly arrested Adebayo and charged him to court. Last Friday, the magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti remanded him in prison. We also gathered that he had been sleeping with the girl before eventually taking her to his mother.”

The Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said that the suspect had been charged to court for defilement.
