Ikorodu killings: OPC will act at the appropriate time – Gani Adams

The National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, Gani Adams, has disclosed that his organisation, the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) is taking its time before deciding on the steps to take against suspected militants and pipeline vandals who have been terrorising some communities in Lagos and Ogun states.

Adams, who spoke with newsmen in Lagos, condemned the recent spate of attacks on some selected communities in Lagos and Ogun states, and described the activities of the suspected militants as criminal.

While disclosing that his organisation is under pressure from some communities who are seeking its assistance in repelling the suspected militants, Adams said the OPC is still weighing the options open to it, saying that he has to be sure that members of his organisation would not be affected by its action. “We have to be sure that our members are no criminalised for whatever action that we take.

“What happened in Ikorodu is highly unfortunate. But people of Yoruba are the only people that play politics with their lives and properties,” Adams said.

The OPC leader described as unfortunate, the demonisation of his organisation by the people, including Yoruba, security agents and the media, adding that the attitude of the people has affected the morale of his members.

“When you have a dog that is preventing criminals from coming to your house and you take it to the veterinary to remove its teeth; when criminals come to your house, what will the dog use to fight them?”

He, however, promised that the organisation will take the necessary step at the right time.

“We will put our house in order. We will work and do the appropriate thing at the appropriate time.

“Would law enforcement agencies not twist it against us again? We still have some of our members in Kirikiri and Ikoyi prisons on an issue related to securing a street. An armed robber was killed and the police twisted it as murder.

“What we are saying now is that it has happened and the law enforcement agents cannot arrest any of the vandals, if we move to do it, are we sure the law enforcement agents would not use it against us? Those are the two main things because we have worked to redeem the image of the OPC and we don’t want anything to tarnish it again.”

  • IT’S FIGHT TO THE FINISH!

    IT’S FIGHT TO THE FINISH!

Militants who claimed responsibility for the previous attack on Totowu, Imoshe, Ishefun, Ishitu, Igando and other coastal communities in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun state and Alimosho area of Lagos state, have vowed to carry out more strikes until their members in police custody are released.

The attacks, according to highly placed sources, started when the militant boys believed to be pipeline vandals began to use the Totowu River as a decoy to ferry petroleum products from vandalised pipelines around the Ijedodo community near Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, through Ipaja into Lagos metropolis.

The gang was said to have struck a deal with some powerful residents, who profited from the illicit business, and provided safe passage for the boys to transport bagged stolen fuel.

Their relationship was, however, severed after one of the community leaders allegedly betrayed the militant group and instigated the arrest of some members, of the gang.

Findings revealed that a community leader (names withheld), who is one of their godfathers felt cheated by the leader of the militant gang following a transaction involving a huge sum of money. He was said to have allegedly attacked and arrested some members of the gang in retaliation.

Angered by the development, the leader of the unnamed militant group called ‘General’ Ateke wrote a letter to Imoshe’s monarch asking him to prevail on the person who masterminded the arrest of its members to release the boys or be ready for showdown.

The monarch was said to have hidden the letter from community leaders out of fear until the militant boys made good their threat and unleashed violence attacks on residents.

They struck seven days after the letter, dated June 20, 2016, was forwarded to the monarch killing several residents, while over 500 residents have fled their homes.

A copy of the letter exclusively obtained by our correspondent read in part: “Robbery and kidnapping incidences have been happining (sic) along the riverine area these grivious(sic) offences have been blamed on us which is not true because our group is not involved in all these allegations.

“ The truth of the matter is that one Chief Akinrogun also called Baba Isila is the one who is causing all these problems. As I am writing this letter the man Baba Ishila kidnapped three of our boys since on the month of (sic) March this year 2016 and the three boys are still in his custody and now he has kidnapped another three persons and proclaim that we are the one.

“In view of the above, we want him to release all these six persons he has kidnapped with immediate effect or else we will trace him to anywhere and get him and deal with him decisively…”

A source who spoke in confidence said:” It is a multimillion naira illicit business. Some residents went into shady deals with the militant boys who steal petrol from vandalized pipelines.

“They have been carrying out the illegal business since 2012 until their relationship crashed following allegations of betrayal by one of their collaborators in the community.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent on the telephone, the spokesman of the group who identified himself simply as Hon said the attacks will be brutal in the days to come unless his men are released by the police.

He said:” We were invited to the community by one Akinrogun and Sato for the purpose of doing ‘business’. We had a deal to share the proceeds of the business on a 50-50 basis but Akinrogun and Sato later reneged and instead invited members of the Odua Peoples Congress(OPC) to destroy our camp and arrested three of our members about three months ago.

“We wrote a letter to the Baale of Imoshe village asking him to provide Akinrogun and his accomplice or prepare for showdown and since they have refused to do that, we also declared war on their communities and it will be fight to the finish o my brother. We will continue to attack the communities until our members in police custody are released.”

Asked why his men turned their guns on innocent residents instead of the man they were looking for, Hon said:” We have vowed to make innocent residents pay for the sins of those behind the arrest of our members because Akinrogun and Sato brought OPC men and mobile policemen to destroy our camp. They raided our camp in March this year when it was raining to arrest our members and subsequently sent them to prison. That is why we have been attacking those communities and we won’t relent until our boys are set free from prison.

”Even you as a reporter cannot take it if you were betrayed by people you trust so much in a business transaction. Although our camp was partially ravaged by policemen and OPC members but we have since regrouped because we have a network of members everywhere in Nigeria. We are not Niger Delta militants   but we have our boys all over the country and we have since gathered more men to join the battle against the two men who betrayed us and invited armed policemen and OPC members to arrest our members.”

He added: “We attacked Imoshe today (Thursday) but some OPC members confronted us and shot two of our members but that won’t deter us at all. If our boys are not released immediately, what is happening in Sagamu and other parts of Ogun State will happen here (Imoshe, Totowu and others). That is why we dey attack them and the residents will pay dearly for the arrest of our members.”

It will be recalled that an attack carried out by the militant group on June 27 led to the death of some of the villagers and a mobile police sergeant, Yusuf Hadi Imeko, who was travelling in a boat with others when they were ambushed.

The late policeman, who earlier participated in an operation to flush out the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast, had just been promoted to his next rank a month before he was killed.

It was learnt that no fewer than 20 persons have since been killed by the militants, who are believed to be pipeline vandals operating on Totowu River, which connects the community with Itele, Agbara in Ogun State and Igando and Egan areas of Lagos State.

Not a few residents have also been robbed and molested by the members of the militant group. The community has since been deserted by thousands of residents for fear of being attacked by the militants.

A victim who asked not to be named said:”A lot of people have so far fled this community following the constant mindless killings, kidnappings and robberies carried out by the pipeline vandals. As I speak, we now live in palpable fear due to the raids by the terror gang which has led to the exodus of many people from this place.

“I am a civil servant and I work in one of the council development areas of Lagos State. At the close of work a few weeks ago, I boarded a boat from Ishitu Egan jetty to Totowu and when we got to the middle of the river, these militant boys waylaid our boat and robbed us of all we had on us.

“The boys identified themselves as Niger Delta militants and dispossessed me of two of my phones, a loaf of bread and a folder and robbed other passengers of their valuables, including the sum of N250,000 belonging to a female passenger.

“There was a time they even robbed some passengers in a boat and asked some female passengers to remove their clothes and fondle their breasts. We are no longer safe in this community and we are asking security agencies to come to our aid because as at now there are no boats to transport people on the waterways; everywhere has been deserted because of these attacks.”

A traditional title holder and Maiyegun of Totowu, Chief Olumide Ajose, however, put the figure of fearful residents who have bolted at well over 5,000.

He said:” The population of the community is about 6,000 but only 50 residents are left in Totowu now. Others have fled for their dear lives, while those who are still in the community dare not come out.

Chief Ajose also confirmed the existence of the letter, saying:” The   insecurity problem has worsened since the killing of the mobile policeman by the militant boys a few days ago because the boys also attacked a boat and killed its 18 passengers, including the operators. Members of the gang have laid a siege to our community and residents can no longer move out or come into Totowu.

“We have also just recently discovered a letter written by the leader of the militant gangs to the Baale of this community since Monday June 20 but the monarch did not tell us about the existence of the letter, wherein the militant group asked that a man called Akinrogun or Baba Isila, who allegedly betrayed them be provided.”

He explained further that the man accused of betrayal by the Ijaw militants “is not an indigene of Totowu. He is from Ishefun, a neigbouring community, and lives in Ayobo area of Alimosho. We can no longer go out and those who dared to go out a few days ago were brutalised by the militant boys. When I summoned courage and visited the bank of the river with some residents this morning, we discovered the lifeless body of a man and handed the body to policemen.

“Totowu is desolate because of mass exodus of residents. Some policemen who were drafted to the community last Thursday spent barely 30 minutes and left. We are urging Ogun State government and Federal Government to immediately rescue us from the grip of the marauding youths.

“The militants came to this village in 2012, and when I led others to prevent them from using this community to operate their unlawful business, I was brutalised and stabbed to the point of death.”

Contacted, the Baale of Totowu, Chief Mosudi Bamgbose, however, denied that the letter was addressed to him. He explained that the letter was addressed to the Baale of Imoshe, a neighbouring village and that the letter has been forwarded to the relevant security agencies, including the police.

He said:”Yes, there was a letter written by the militant group but it was addressed to the Baale of Imoshe, a neighbouring community. The letter was not addressed to me at all. I only have a photocopy of the letter and relevant security agencies have been given copies of the letter from the militant boys.

“Today (Thursday), about 10 members of the gang stormed Imoshe with the intention of attacking residents but they were chased out by vigilant youths. They are not more than 19 years old and have been terrorising not only Totowu but Ishefun, Ishuti and Imoshe among others. We are living in fear and our lives are not safe because of the marauders who have been killing our people, including policemen lately. Please help us tell both Ogun and Lagos state governments to come to our aid.”

He added: “The man (Chief Akinrogun) the militant boys are accusing of kidnapping did not abduct anyone. He only caused the arrest of some members of the gang during a raid and handed them to men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), hence, he was singled out for reproach and attack by the heartless boys. Chief Akinrogun explained this in the presence of a senior police officer who visited one of the communities recently.”

Ogun police spokesman, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) was not available for comments at press time.

However, his Lagos counterpart, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said: “Two of the hoodlums were arrested and ammunition recovered. Presently, the command has deployed adequate security personnel and equipment to the area to forestall reoccurrence. We are working on the clue we have so far to unravel the case.

“The command is also imploring members of the public to promptly alert the police of any strange movement or occurrence within their community.”

  • Dreaded One MillionBoys kingpins make good their threat … unleash terror on residents

Barely one month after they threatened to return and deal with residents for orchestrating their arrest, suspected kingpins of a dreaded gang called ‘One Million Boys’ have returned to unleash terror on residents of Isheri and Idimu areas of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the suspected leader of the dreaded gang, identified simply as ‘Yar’Adua’,  another kingpin called ‘Babyface’ and others returned to the communities last week after they were arrested by the police for robbery. Their return generated palpable fear in residents who accused the police of complicity in the release of the boys.

A cross section of residents and community leaders condemned the release of the boys by the police.

Sources told The Nation that the notorious leader of the gang, Yar’Adua, was given a wild reception by his members for making good his promise to return from police custody.

Residents, who asked not to be named, explained that the boys went into a frenzy on sighting Yar’Adua and showered him with alcoholic beverages.

A resident, who did not want his name in print, said: “We thought that Yar’Adua was joking when he boasted that he would soon return to deal with us for instigating their arrest during a robbery operation.  But he was released from the police custody alongside two other members of his gang last week and was bathed in alcohol by his members to mark his return. Since he returned, the gang has been terrorising residents.”

It was gathered that Yar’Adua and his boys a few days ago allegedly tortured and dispossessed a 60-year-old man of his phones and money in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government Area.

Another source who spoke in confidence with our correspondent said the boys have been terrorising residents of Hassan Balogun Street and others since their return. She said: “The boys have since been intimidating residents of the streets where they were arrested while carrying out robbery operations. They even ambushed a 60-year-old man and tortured him with cutlass before robbing him of his mobile handsets and cash.

“They have made good their promise to return and deal with us by robbing people in the neighbourhoods with machetes and guns and we are therefore calling on the police authorities in Lagos State to save us from these heartless boys.”

The Nation had reported in its Saturday, May 28 edition how the gang, comprising about 18 boys, with ages ranging from 14 to 17, allegedly robbed not less than 15 houses in Isheri Olofin in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

It was gathered that the boys, who were armed with machetes, guns and other dangerous weapons, raided about 15 houses on Fasasi, Balogun, Anuoluwapo, Fasasi Balogun and Orelope Streets from 12:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.

The gangsters were said to have announced their presence with sporadic gun shots. Items including DVD players, undisclosed cash, jewelry and cellular phones were carted away in ‘Ghana must go’ bags by the hoodlums. Those who hesitated to release their belongings were macheted and shot during the operation, it was learnt.

About five landlords critically injured during the robbery operation were taken to the State General Hospital, Igando, while an elderly member of a local vigilance group identified simply as Baba Kazeem, who was matcheted, was on the danger list at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja.

A 60-year-old woman simply known as Iya Rotimi was also critically injured by the hoodlums while an unidentified man and his wife were seriously injurred by the hoodlums for not having valuables at home.

It was also learnt that the boys took to their heels with their loot when they were confronted by angry residents. One of them known as Babyface was however caught at Idimu and led the police to arrest three other members of the group, including one Yar’Adua.

The boys were said to have threatened to kill a three-month-old baby when his parents explained that they did not have money at home. They, however, spared the baby after carting away valuables from the apartment.

The fleeing hoodlums were eventually arrested by men of Idimu Police Division who answered distress calls by the residents. The boys were said to have boasted while they were being taken away in a police van that they would soon return to deal with residents for inviting policemen to arrest them.

In her reaction, the spokesperson of Lagos Police Command, Dolapo Badmos in a text message said:”The case was transferred to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and from there it was charged to court. Meanwhile, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Idimu Police Station ___confirmed that there has been no robbery in the jurisdiction recently.”

  • ‘My casual visit to Indian hemp bunk turned me into a robber’

A 34-year-old robbery suspect, Mojeed Ogooluwa, who was arrested with his accomplice, Taoheed Waheed, 30, by the  Inspector General of Police Intelligent Response Team (IGP-IRT) has confessed that an unplanned visit to an Indian hemp smoking joint brought him into contact with armed robbers who influenced him to join their gang a few days after losing his regular job.

According to a source, the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT) received information on May 13, 2016 that a gang of armed robbers led by one Mojeed Ogooluwa, aka Terminator, of No. 22, Opeyemi Street, Mowe Ibafo, Ogun State, who specialises in car snatching within Ogun State and Lagos State with a hideout located in Ketu area of Lagos State, was preparing for operation.

The source disclosed that gang members used to converge there to plan criminal activities. Acting on the information, a team of IRT operatives swung into action and arrested Ogooluwa and Waheed, while others escaped.

The two, who were interrogated, confessed to have snatched a Toyota Camry saloon car with an unknown registration number and sold it to one Alhaji, who they claimed could not be traced. They also confessed to have snatched an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla Saloon car with registration number LSR 259 DG and a 2007 model Toyota Camry saloon car, with registration number KJA 997 DH.

They owned up to snatching the two vehicles on the same day and time.

With police operatives on their trail, the robbers encountered policemen attached to Ogun State SARS at the point where they attempted to sell one of the vehicles and one of them was killed. They were forced to abandon one of the vehicles at Ogere, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

I tricked robbers to survive – victim

Of his ordeal with the robbers, the victim, Iyiola Olushola, said: “I am a civil servant, and I work with the Lagos State government. I stay around Ketu area of Lagos State. On the 8th of March, 2016, I was in my room with my kids, sleeping, between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., when three persons burst into my room. I don’t know how they got in and one pointed a gun at me and started asking, ‘where is your money?’ He asked me twice, and I told him that my bag was downstairs. I knew I had no money in my bag, but I told them that my bag was downstairs. While we went down, some of them ransacked my room and picked my gold ear rings, laptop and cell phone.

“Later on, they picked my car key and asked for my gate key, and I pointed it to them. They were about five, and they packed themselves into my car and they shot rapidly into the air as they were leaving. Later, they drove back into our compound and picked something again. Surprisingly, and luckily too, a police patrol team showed up and went after the robbers.

When they returned, they told us that the robbers had gone and they took my car registration number and radio. In the morning of the next day, I went to Alapere Police Station and reported the case, and the police did not show much interest in helping us to investigate.

I joined gang to raise my children’s school fees, says first suspect

Further in his confession, the Ogooluwa, said: “I am 34-year-old. I am a resident of Ibafo, Ogun State. I am married with two children. I am from Oyo State. I am a bricklayer. I am a member of Eye Confraternity. I started riding Keke NAPEP in Ketu area of Lagos State in 2002. I usually made N7, 000 and saved N2, 000 daily. Four years ago, I became an executive of Keke Marwa Operators Association in Ikosi Isheri unit, Ketu. I was in the post of Financial Secretary. We were affiliated to the National Union of Road Transport workers. My job was to monitor the movement of Keke NAPEP around Ketu and make sure that there was free flow of traffic. I usually got N5, 000 weekly as food money and by the end of month I got N20, 000.

“In January this year, I was suspended from work, and when it was time for me to pay my children’s school fees, I could not. I met one Agu and Mutiu at a smoking joint in Ketu area and they started talking about robbing cars. I then told them that I could drive. We exchanged numbers and agreed to meet by night time. We met at Ketu Bus Stop, and I saw five boys, who are Agu, Lekan Texas, Yahoo Foreign, Mutiu and I. I don’t know the name of the street in Ketu because it was Agu and Mutiu that took us to the house.

“Three of our gang members had guns. The time was around 1:00 a.m. We invaded a house by scaling the fence, and we broke the door of the house. Two people entered the house to get the car key and I stood outside with two others. After a while, they brought the key of a Toyota Camry and we all drove out with it. On our way, we saw a Toyota Corolla on CMD Road and we robbed it.

“From that point, we proceeded to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and we were heading to Ilorin Kwara State to sell the vehicles to our buyers. On our way, the police attacked us where we stopped to buy something to eat. The police shot at us and we all ran away, but the bullet hit one of us, Mutiu, on his abdomen, and we abandoned him and the vehicle and ran into the bush. The police followed us but they stopped when they couldn’t apprehend us.

“After that operation, I quit. But before that operation, Lekan Texas called me and told me that he wanted me to help take the car to one Alhaji.”

I was enticed with food, says second suspect

The second suspect, Taoheed Waheed said: “I am 30-years-old. I live in Ibadan. I am an injector mechanic, and I came to look for work in December 2015. I used to have a shop by Ojo Expressway, but when the expressway was being expanded, my shop was demolished.

“Then I decided to come to Ketu to look for work at Tipper Garage but I was told that there was no work and that they had their own engineer. I met them in Ketu and they used to give me food.”

‘Why we killed mother, daughter over N40, 000, motorcycle’

    Okungbowa Aiwerie, Asaba

The Deta State Police Command has arrested two teenagers over the gruesome murder of a mother and her daughter in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

The victims were identified as Edith Sunday and Favour Sunday, as well as Praise Sunday.

The duo also attempted to kill the victim’s son, stabbing him several times in the neck. One of the suspects, Solomon Ogibor (20) and Ola Babatunde (19), in confessing to the crime, said he had no intention of killing the woman but killed her because she identified him.

Ogibor, an apprentice tailor based in Lagos, maintained that the deceased often insulted his dead mother, accusing her of being a ritualist. He said: “Yes, it is true we killed the woman and her daughter and then stabbed her son. We used the kitchen knife we saw in the woman’s kitchen to cut her throat and that of her daughter.

“I was afraid and angered by the attitude of the woman. My friends and I decided to go to the woman at night, just to teach her a lesson by beating. But when we got there, the woman was stubborn. After beating her, as we were leaving, the devil took over our senses when we saw a kitchen knife in the house. We returned to her room and killed her and her daughter because she was calling my name.”

Delta State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Zanna, who spoke to reporters, said the suspects would soon be arraigned in court, adding that an accomplice of the duo is at large. CP Ibrahim said that the suspects robbed the deceased of N40, 000 and a motorcycle parked in her residence.

Items recovered include one locally made cut-to-size gun, a cutlass and a knife.

But 19-year-old Ola Babatunde, a computer technician, said his friend persuaded him to join the gang. He said that the gang paid N17, 000 for the gun used during the operation, adding that he was pushed by other gang members to kill the woman’s son.

“I stabbed the boy,” he said. “I did not intend to stab the boy, but I was ordered to do it because they said the police would be on our trail since we had already robbed the woman. We are regretting the whole situation. Had I known, we would have let the woman be, but we are begging God to forgive us. We know what we did was very bad but the deed has been done. We regret these killings.”

  • Trial of Lekki Garden’s MD over building collapse adjourned till Sept 30

Further proceedings in a suit filed against the Managing Director of Lekki Gardens, Mr Robert Nyong, and the contractor that supervised the construction of the building, Mr Taiwo Odofin, has been adjourned till September 30, 2016.

The new date was jointly agreed upon by the prosecutor, Barrister Goddy Osuyi, and lawyers to the accused persons, Mr Bode Olanipekun and Mr Uwangboje.

Both parties fixed the new date after the court’s Registrars informed counsels and litigants that the court’s new magistrate, Chief Magistate A. O. Awogboro (Miss) was indisposed.

Upon the information given by the court’s Registrars, both the prosecution and the defence agreed on the new date, which was communicated to the Registrars.

Men of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) of the Lagos State Police Command had, on March 11, brought both the Managing Director and the contractor before the court formerly presided over by Chief Magistrate Afolashade Botoku, for remand, following the collapse of a five-storey building in Lekki area of the state, which killed 35 people and left many others injured.

In the remand application, the police had urged the Botoku led-court to remand the accused pending a complete investigation of the matter.

Consequently, Chief Magistrate Botoku conceded to the police request, and adjourned the matter till March 23, while ordering that the two men be remanded in SCID’s custody.

When the matter came up on March 23, the police failed to produce the two men before the court, an action which the Chief Magistate frowned on and ordered that the police produce the accused persons before the court the following day, March 24.

Upon production of the two men in court by the police the next day, Chief Magistate Botoku graciously admitted them to bail, following bail applications filed by the lawyers to the accused persons.

In granting the bail applications, the Chief Magistate admitted bail to the firm’s Managing Director on self recognisance, while the contractor, Odofin, was admitted to bail in the sum of N10 million with two sureties.

  • EKDC charges two for cable vandalism

The Eko Distribution Company (EKDC) has brought two men, Suleimon Abdulamid, 40, and Kelechi Sunday, 41, before an Ebute Chief Magistrate’s Court for stealing and unlawful damage of cables.

Suleimon, is a native of Kogi State and a driver, while Kelechi, from Abia, is a labourer.

The defendants were alleged to have stolen two pieces of armoured cable wires valued at N254, 000, property of EKDC at A-Z Oil and Gas Company Dockyard, Apapa, Lagos on June 25, at about 2:00 a.m.

It was said that the defendants willfully and unlawfully damaged 12 meters length of armoured cable wire of EKDC property.

EKDC arrested the defendants in the act of committing the crime and dragged them to court on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and unlawful damage, it emerged.

Police Inspector, Moses Uademevbo told the court that people should be punished when caught putting the lives of others in danger .He said ”  I can’t imagine despite the darkness and pains this country in facing as a result  of power supply some citizens could go as far to steal the EKDC cables, they are the reason Nigerians are in darkness”.

He asked the court to remand the defendants in prison or admit them on a stringent bail condition.

The defense counsel, Hakeem Babalola argued that it will be unfair to justice if the court fails to grant bail to the defendants since the cables have been recovered by the police .

Magistrate Fowowe -Erusiafe admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of #100,000 and two sureties in like sum, one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the defendant.

The case was adjourned till July 27 for trial.

The suspect, Alajo Kehinde Adediran, was apprehended last Friday in the Tekobo area of Idiaba, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Nemesis as victim crushes okada robber to death, injure another

In a rare show of bravery, a robbery victim yesterday smashed a two-man armed robbery gang crushing one of them to death.

Another member of the gang injured is in critical condition in a hospital.

The incident occurred around 12 pm on 22 Road, Festac Town, in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos.

Residents beheld the gory sight of blood gushing out of the robbers.

The residents were alerted by a loud bang and immediately ran out of their homes and shops, scampering to safety.

An eyewitness who spoke to The Nation, said, “I was inside the house when I heard a loud bang. I thought a building had collapsed, so I quickly ran out. It was then I saw the crime scene.”

After confirming that it was more of an accident scene, they moved closer to the scene only to discover the brave robbery victim, who decided to take the fight to his robbers head on.

The Nation learnt that the car driver and his passenger were earlier robbed of their phones and some money at gun point by the two robbers, who were on a motorcycle in front of TFC on 22 road.

He decided to go after them. The hot chase lasted barely 10 seconds before hitting the robbers, who on sighting him chasing them wanted to turn and “finish him.”

The victim’s Toyota car intercepted the motorcycle opposite the FHA Club, just a block away from the building where they robbed him.

The impact of the hit released the air bag of his vehicle, the most part of the motorcycle being under the tyres of his car.

The injured robber quickly buried his gun, claiming to be an Okada rider.

Meanwhile, the victim proceeded to Festac Police Division to report the incident.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station, Mr Monday Agbonika and some of his men accompanied the victim to the accident scene to see things for themselves.

On the DPO’s instruction, the area was searched and the gun used during the robbery attack was discovered.

The DPO of the police divisional headquarters, Festac Town, Mr. Monday Agbonika, who expressed joy that the residents were able to stand up and protect their lives and property, told The Nation that the victim acted in bravery.

“I’m very happy that those guys made an effort to protect their property. What they did wasn’t an easy thing, considering that the robbers were armed.”

Another eyewitness explained how one of the robbers quickly buried the gun, whilst claiming to be an innocent okada man, who was brutally brought down by the motorist.

“It’s a good thing the victim was smart enough to come and report the crime quickly and I responded immediately. When we got to the scene of the crime, the robbers had almost turned the case around. In fact, if we hadn’t recovered the pistol, the victims would have been taken in as suspects” said the DPO.

The DPO revealed that apart from the gun, they also recovered some phones and the sum of N96,000 from the robbers.

The unidentified robbers, who were seriously injured, were immediately rushed to the hospital.

As at the time of filing this report, one of them was reported dead.

  • How my informant lured me into robbery—Police corporal

How my informant lured me into robbery—Police corporal

A robbery gang allegedly led by a police corporal has been smashed by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Response Squad (IRS) ‎in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to police sources, the gang is said to specialise in car snatching.

The alleged leader of the gang, Corporal Christ Oboko, who is said to be serving at C4I in Rivers State, was arrested together with a member of the gang identified as Johnpaul Amani.

In his confession, 27-year-old Amani, an indigene of Bayelsa State, said: “I was a commercial bus driver before I went into robbery, and I started by snatching cars. One of my friends, Kelvin, who we normally call Side-Mirror, a fellow commercial bus driver, led me into my first gang, led by one Okute from Edo State.

“Side-Mirror and I were driving other people’s vehicles but he was looking better and was spending more money than me.  When my wife became pregnant and I needed money to arrange for her delivery but things were not working well for me. I approached Side-Mirror for assistance and he revealed that driving was not the only job he was doing.

“He took me to his boss, one Okute, at Diobu area of Port Harcourt. And since I was a good driver, I was accepted into the gang. When I joined them, I discovered that Okute has several boys working for him. On the day I went there, I saw Ifeanyi, Onu, Ama-Boy, Patoranki, Pikin and others I could not identify.

“Whenever my boss wanted to go for an operation, he would come to our base at Market Junction in Port Harcourt and pick anyone he wanted to work with. I went to five operations with him.

“In our first operation, we stole a Toyota Camry at Market Junction. My boss saw the car where it was parked and liked it. He stole it at night, took it to Owerri and gave it to one Kabiru, a soldier.

“In my second operation, we stole five cars in one night. Three of us went for the operation and we first stole a white Toyota Corolla from Elekoyo Estate, Port Harcourt.  “We also stole two Nissan Sunny cars from Artillery area of Port Harcourt. We then stole two Toyota Camry cars from D-Line area of Port Harcourt. We parked all the cars at Diobu and the next day, we called Ifeanyi and an ex-policeman to help drive the cars to Owerri.

“We gave all the vehicle to Kabiru, who paid N500,000 for the two Camry cars while Okute alone went to collect the balance. He gave me N60, 000 as my share. Side-Mirror and I became angry with Okute. “Two weeks later, he came to Port Harcourt with a Totota Corrolla and asked us to watch over it, but Side-Mirror made away with it and told him to give him the balance of the five cars we took to Owerri. He lied that Kabiru had not paid him.

“One week after Side-Mirror took the car, I leant that Okute went to a hotel where Side-Mirror kept the car and stole it.  Side-Mirror called me that he parked the car in a hotel and went to drink. But when he returned, he could not find the car.

“When I called Okute, he told me that the car was with him and he was not going to work with us again because we did not trust him.

“Two of my friends, who kidnapped a former local government chairman in Bayelsa State brought two of the man’s cars to me to sell in Port Harcourt. When I was checking the cars at Nembe Waterside, Coporal Oboko and one of his colleagues confronted us and took the cars away. But he didn’t take the cars to the police station; he converted the cars to his own use.

“Three months after, he saw me on the road and asked me to forgive him, saying that he would like me to work with him. He took me to his boss at C4I and he told him that I was highly resourceful and could give them information about armed robbers operating within Rivers State.  His boss promised to reward me handsomely if I assisted them and I accepted.

“I gave them information that led to the arrest of big armed robbers and they recovered assorted arms and ammunition. I was rewarded as promised, but after some months, Corporal Oboko called me and said that the car he took from him was giving him trouble and he wanted me to get him a new car.

“I told him that I had stopped stealing cars since I started working with them, but he insisted and said that he would follow me to wherever I wanted to steal the car to ensure that I was successful.

“We both went out on the first operation and we stole a Honda End of Discursion car. He gave his father the old car and started using the new one. Seeing how easy the operation went, he said that we should go for more robberies. He also established contact with a stolen vehicle receiver in Owerri and we started stealing cars from the parks around Port Harcourt at night.

“We stole several cars and took them to the receiver in Owerri and shared the proceeds equally. We were close to the point that whenever I was arrested, my people would call him and he would come to the police station and tell them that I am his boy, and the policemen would release me.

“At a point, Oboko said he was tired of operating in the dead of the night and he wanted to start using guns to snatch cars whenever he needed them. I thought he was joking. But    few days after he said so, he brought two pistols.

“We did several jobs with them around Port Harcourt, but at a point, Oboko started cheating me. After snatching a car, he would take it to the receiver, sell it and refused to give me my share. He also stopped carrying me along and was working with some other boys he knew through me.

“Not long after then, I was arrested and I led the police to apprehend him.”

The police corporal, Oboko, confessed to snatching eight vehicles and admitted selling them to one Victor who is based in Owerri. The 35-year-old native of Onitchaigbo lamented that it was his informant that lured him into crime.

He said: “I am married with children and I reside in the Police Barracks on Iche Street, Borokiri, Port Harcourt. I joined the Nigeria Police Force in April 2003 and I have served at Borokiri Police Division, from there I went to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) before joining C4I.

“I started car snatching in 2015 when I met Amadi. He was our informant and he lured me into robbery. It all started when Amadi brought two vehicles and gave them to one Victor Nwogu to sell. I met them doing the negotiation and from there, I offered to join them.

I snatched a Toyota Camry at D-Line area of Port Harcourt and we took the car to Victor in Owerri. I sold the car to victor for N200,000. We were three and I took N70,000 and gave Amandi and Kelvin the balance to share.

“On the second operation, the three of us went for the job at D-Line and we stole three Camry cars from the park. We sold the vehicles to Victor in Owerri and he paid us N360, 000. I got N150, 000 as my share.   “We also snatched a Toyota Corolla from Elelenwo area with a gun and I took the car to victor and he paid N250,000. I took N80,000 as my share and gave the rest to Amadi and Kelvin to share. We also snatched a Toyota Spider at GRA at gun point and we parked it inside Borokiri. But before we arrived in the morning, the car had been removed.

“I was always going to release them whenever they were arrested by the police, and I don’t know what came over me.  I am the resident Pastor of Battle Axe Assembly Church in Chuba Allo area of Port Harcourt and I have a calling in the work of God. I do not know what made me to join Amadi in his evil business,” he lamented.
