  • Addressing common misconceptions about Amotekun

    Gabriel Ogunjobi

The establishment of Western Nigerian Security Network (WNSN) code-named Operation Amotekun, by the Southwest Governors, has been accompanied by fears and misconceptions.

Endorsed by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, it is fashioned to function as a community policing in response to the yearning of the local people.

Amotekun is all but these below:

Regional Police: While the comments are thriving as to whether they will operate as region police, one of the Governors Rotimi Akeredolu has stated that it will not operate as a regional police force, therefore, it is not an idea in the embryo to introduce state police.

“We are not creating a regional police force. We are not oblivious of the steps we must take to have state police.

“Some of us are unapologetic in our belief in state police but we are also-law abiding citizens. We know the lawful steps to be taken to achieve that but that won’t stop us from taking steps to provide security for our people,” the Ondo governor emphasized during the launching on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

Alternative to Nigeria Police Force: Amotekun security is not an alternative to the police and therefore, does not possess the constitutional powers vested in the Force alone.

Fear to be used for political purposes: another fear of the critics is channeled towards the potential to be abused or converted as a political instrument for governors’ whims and caprices. Amotekun cannot be deployed Amotekun for political purposes.

While the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission is still working on the grey areas in Amotekun’s operational guidelines, members will be drafted from local hunters, vigilantes and designated members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) as personnel and police.

The headquarters will be in Ibadan and the operation will be controlled from Gbongan in Osun State.

  • I can determine financial value of a prospective victim from a distance- Kidnap kingpin Evans

    By Adebisi Onanuga

Billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans told an Ikeja High Court on Friday that he can estimate the financial worth of a victim gazing at him from a short distance.

He stated this in a video played during his trial before Justice Hakeem Oshodi

It was during the cross-examination of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) Inspector Idowu Haruna by the defence counsel to Victor Aduba, one of Evans’ co-defendants, Mr Emmanuel Ochai.

In the video, Evans was seen sitting on a sofa and confessing to Haruna about various kidnappings he masterminded and carried out.

He gave the details of his alleged victims, mostly paid ransoms in several millions of foreign currencies with the exception of two, who paid ransoms of $1million and $2.3million each.

Insp. Haruna who is also a member of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) asked Evans how he mapped out strategies to kidnap his alleged victims.

Evans simply replied: “When you see someone that has money you will know”.

Evans in the video told the IPO that he knew that the individuals he and his alleged gang members kidnapped will pay the ransoms even if it involves selling their property to raise the funds.

He explained that through a contact in prison, he was able to procure arms for his kidnap operations.

He said in the video that a pharmaceutical boss, Mr Donatus Dunu who had already paid a ransom of 223,000 Euros had not finished paying the ransom in full before escaping and alerting the police.

Evans said that Aduba who is a dismissed Army Officer, accompanied him during kidnap operations pointing out that Aduba was involved in the failed kidnap attempt of Chief Vincent Obianodo, the Chairman of The Young Shall Grow Motors.

He however admitted in the video that Aduba did not participate in the kidnap of Dunu.

After the video was played, Ochai told Haruna that Evans never identified Aduba (sixth defendant) as a participant in the kidnap of Dunu.

Responding Idowu said, “According to information the victim (Dunu) gave to police, kidnappers that came to abduct him were in army camouflage.

“This corroborated the information provided by the kidnap kingpin that most of the kidnapping he carried out were with the participation of the sixth defendant and that the sixth defendant did not participate in the kidnap of Dunu.”

The prosecution closed its case against Evans and his five co-defendants after the cross-examination of Haruna

Earlier during the trial, Idowu while being led in evidence by the state prosecutor, Mr Adebayo Haroun, explained how Evans spent the ransoms he allegedly received from his victims.

According to him: “The investigation carried out revealed that the ransoms collected by the first defendant were used in purchasing a house at Fred Shoboyede Road, Magodo, where he was arrested.

“He purchased a second house at Emmanuel Keshi Street, Magodo and another property in Accra, Ghana.

“He used part of the ransom to establish himself in the haulage business and some of the trucks he bought with the ransoms were recovered by police.

“He also bought some landed property in Anambra State,” Haruna said.

Evans is standing trial alongside Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu and Victor Aduba over the alleged kidnap of Dunu who is the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceutical Ltd.

The six defendants were arraigned on Aug. 30, 2017 on two counts of conspiracy and kidnapping.

According to the prosecution, they allegedly kidnapped Dunu along Ilupeju Road, Lagos on Feb. 14, 2017 and collected 223,000 Euros (N100 million) as ransom from his family.

So far, four witnesses including Dunu had testified during the trial on behalf of the state.
