  • Dwelling according to knowledge (5)

    Dear Reader,

I welcome you to this last edition of the teaching for the month.

I like to conclude this teaching by showing you the Duties Of The Children.

The injunction to dwell according to knowledge was specifically addressed to the men. However, children also need to know their responsibilities to their parents, in order to enjoy family success. Ephesians 6:1-3 clearly states: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Honour for your parents is a commandment. In fact, this scripture says it is the first commandment with a promise attached to it. The reason we find a lot of people today, who can’t seem to make it in life, in spite of their hard work, is perhaps because they have dishonoured their parents. If you want to see good, then obedience to God’s command is required. Showing honour and respect to your parents is a commandment that is not negotiable. It does not have any given conditions when it may be disobeyed. That means whether your parents are good or bad, insensitive or irrational, born again or not, no matter their state, honour for them is a must.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines honour as “esteem due or paid to worth; high estimation; respect; consideration; reverence; veneration; manifestation of respect or reverence.” That means you are to give to your parents due respect and reverence, and esteem them highly under every circumstances of life.

For failure to honour his father, Reuben lost his glorious place in destiny. The Bible records in Genesis 35:22: And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine: and Israel heard it…

In Genesis 49:3-4, when Jacob was pronouncing blessings on his sons, what Reuben got was this: Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

It is sad, because Reuben by destiny was the excellency of dignity. He was by destiny supposed to be a man of dignity. But he lost it for one singular act of dishonour and lack of respect for his father.

Jesus further emphasized this point in Matthew 19:16-19: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him … but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said … Honour thy father and thy mother…

Longevity on earth and eternity with God are both tied to the honour given by children to their parents. This also is part of the 10 Commandments given to Moses in Exodus 20:12. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:12: …A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

If you want to see many good and fulfilling days on the earth, then as a child in a family, respect for your parents is non-negotiable. You will make it, in Jesus’ name!

Effectively handling your duties as children demands a life in Christ. This entails confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour. If you are ready to be born again, please say this simple prayer with me, in faith: Dear Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I believe You died and rose again for my sake. Forgive me of my sins, take over my life, make me Your child and let Your peace reign over my life. Thank you for saving me. Now I know I am born again.

Congratulations, you are now born again! I believe that you will begin to experience the reality of the price that Jesus paid for your sins at Calvary. All round rest and peace are guaranteed you in Jesus’ Name!

  • Stress and health

This Monday, I had a long day with enough work for me

to just come home and rest. My coming home meant

my coming to darkness because of lack of electricity, a stressor. When power came on, the TV came on with news of the Boston Marathon bombing in the USA. For me, it was a shock but unlike that for those at the scene. More than 140 people were wounded, some maimed, and two died. I considered that if a hundred people are wounded or maimed physically, perhaps, watching from their television, hundreds of thousands or persons would be “wounded or maimed” mentally and millions of persons would be “wounded or maimed” spiritually. The next day, as I was considering penning more of the topic: Stress and Health, I thought to myself, “Evil is the greatest of stressors”. Evil indeed is with us, in us, around us and has a way of popping up every now and then, in small presence and in great presence and is a source of much stress within us and outside of us. Indeed, Jewish and Christian wisdom tells us to do good and avoid evil through King David and the apostles Peter and Paul (Psalm 37: 27; 1Peter 3; 11; Romans 12: 9) and I wonder if I would ever perfect this principle in this life. Indeed, I do not know any Christian who believes in it. Other faiths and ideologies may teach the same but we human beings in general do not believe in it. Stress affects our physical, mental, and spiritual health and wellbeing, and if we recognize any evil as a great stressor we do well to avoid it, if we can.

However blatant evil is not what we routinely deal with. For many of us routinely, the expected stressors are those factors that cause physical stress is on our bodies through exhaustion, lack of food or unhealthy eating, lack of sleep or unhealthy sleeping, exposure to hazards, and unhealthy posture or conditioning. Motivational speakers and counsellors are forever teaching us about time management, planning, and the habits of busy and successful people. Indeed, sometimes we cannot avoid extra work or long hours of work and all the time we need to know our own capacities and how these events affect us and how to manage ourselves well.

One important biologic implication is psychosomatics. The extra activities of our mentality, translated into extra activities of our nerves and in turn translated into extra activities of our body organs can have deleterious effects or cause pains arising from an affected body organs. A major nerve that controls many body organs is the vagus nerve. In fact its name is from the same root as the word vagabond; it goes everywhere in the abdomen.

Stress-induced hyper-stimulation of the nerve makes the stomach to secret more acid. For people who have weak stomach protective lining this acid becomes corrosive to the stomach wall causing ulcer. If you need to work extra hard and for long periods or if you find yourself skipping meals, it is helpful to keep some snack around: nuts, biscuits, bites. Snacking on such will give any acid in your stomach something to digest instead of your own stomach wall.If you do not protect your stomach from acid stress and also fail to sleep well to allow your body to undergo healing and recovery, you may set the stage for chronic ulcer. Some ulcers can turn into cancer.

Getting carried away with work can make us skip meals. Lack of nutrition can affect us in many ways. For example, we become weak in our body defences and this can make us prone to catch infectious diseases. Some of these diseases may be chronic diseases sticking to the victim long after the job is done. One weeks’ unmanaged stress of hard work can result in years of chronic infection. For women under stress and menstruating, skipping meals can precipitate anaemia and pathologic weakness because of lack of blood.

Some works take a toll on certain parts of our bodies. Eye strain, back ache, neck pain, and stiffness, are often results of long ours in the same posture and doing the same thing. Taking breaks or breaking the stress is useful to limit such stress. Resting one’s eye, getting up and standing for a few seconds every now and then, for example, can break the posture stressors. The essential factor is breaking the stress instead of letting it be continuous.

Psychosomatics include effects of continual stressors on vital organs such as the heart and blood vessels. In the cardiovascular system, this can lead to build up of blood pressure. To avoid such build-up, breaking the stressor by taking breaks is also important. A few minutes’ relaxation or fun every few hours may be helpful.

Therefore one important aspect of preventing damage to our health through physical stressors, is to recognize the stressors and to break up their influence instead of letting them be continuous.

  • Health tips

    1. Copy your kitty: Learn to do stretching exercises when you wake up. It boosts circulation and digestion, and eases back pain.

•Don’t skip breakfast: Studies show that eating a proper breakfast is one of the most positive things you can do if you are trying to lose weight. Breakfast skippers tend to gain weight. A balanced breakfast includes fresh fruit or fruit juice.

•Brush up on hygiene. Many people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all.

    5. Get what you give: Always giving and never taking? This is the short road to compassion fatigue. Give to yourself and receive from others, otherwise you’ll get to a point where you have nothing left to give. And hey, if you can’t receive from others, how can you expect them to receive from you?

•Knock one back. A glass of red wine a day is good for you. A number of studies have found this, but a recent one found that the polyphenols (a type of antioxidant) in green tea, red wine and olives may also help protect you against breast cancer.

•Bone up daily. Get your daily calcium by popping a tab, chugging milk or eating yoghurt. It’ll keep your bones strong. Remember that your bone density declines after the age of 30. You need at least 200 milligrams daily, which you should combine with magnesium, or it simply won’t be absorbed.

•I say tomato: Tomato is a superstar in the fruit and veggie pantheon. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful cancer fighter. They’re also rich in vitamin C. To enjoy the benefits, eat five apples a week or a tomato every other day.

•Eat your stress away: Prevent low blood sugar as it stresses you out. Eat regular and small healthy meals and keep fruit and veggies handy.

•No folly in folic acid: Folic acid should be taken regularly by all pregnant mums and people with a low immunity to disease. Folic acid prevents spina bifida in unborn babies and can play a role in cancer prevention. It is found in green leafy vegetables, liver, fruit and bran.

•Pure water: Don’t have soft drinks or energy drinks while you’re exercising. Stay properly hydrated by drinking enough water during your workout

•The secret of stretching: When you stretch, ease your body into position until you feel the stretch and hold it for about 25 seconds. Breathe deeply to help your body move oxygen-rich blood to those sore muscles. Don’t bounce or force yourself into an uncomfortable position.

•Do your weights workout first: Experts say weight training should be done first, because it’s a higher intensity exercise compared to cardio. Your body is better able to handle weight training early in the workout because you’re fresh and you have the energy you need to work it.

•Burn fat during intervals: To improve your fitness quickly and lose weight, harness the joys of interval training. Set the treadmill or step machine on the interval programme, where your speed and workload varies from minute to minute. •Your dirtiest foot forward: If your ankles, knees, and hips ache from running on pavement, head for the dirt. Soft trails or graded roads are a lot easier on your joints than the hard stuff.

•Burn the boredom, blast the lard. Rev up your metabolism by alternating your speed and intensity during aerobic workouts. Not only should you alternate your routine to prevent burnout or boredom, but to give your body a jolt.

•Cool off without a beer: Don’t eat carbohydrates for at least an hour after exercise. This will force your body to break down body fat, rather than using the food you ingest. Stick to fruit and fluids during that hour, but avoid beer.

•Stop fuming: Don’t smoke and if you smoke already, do everything in your power to quit. Apart from the well-known risks of heart disease and cancer, orthopaedic surgeons have found that smoking accelerates bone density loss and constricts blood flow.

•Do self-checks. Do regular self-examinations of your breasts. Most partners are more than happy to help, not just because breast cancer is the most common cancer among SA women. The best time to examine your breasts is in the week after your period.

•Beat the sneezes: There are more than 240 allergens, some rare and others very common. If you’re a sneezer due to pollen, close your car’s windows while driving, rather switch on the internal fan and avoid being outdoors between 5am and 10 am when pollen counts are at their highest

•Fragrant ageing: Stay away from perfumed or flavoured suntan lotions which smell of coconut oil or orange if you want your skin to stay young. These lotions contain psoralen, which speeds up the ageing process. Rather use a fake-tan lotion. Avoid sun beds, which are as bad as the sun itself.

•Laugh and cry: Having a good sob is reputed to be good for you. So is laughter, which has been shown to help heal bodies, as well as broken hearts. Studies indicate that laughter boosts the immune system and helps the body shake off allergic reactions.

•Strong people go for help: Ask for assistance. Gnashing your teeth in the dark will not get you extra brownie points. It is a sign of strength to ask for assistance and people will respect you for it. If there is a relationship problem, the one who refuses to go for help is usually the one with whom the problem lies to begin with.

•Sugar-coated: This type of diabetes is often part of a metabolic syndrome, which includes high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease. More than 80 percent of diabetics die of heart disease, so make sure you control your glucose levels, and watch your blood pressure and cholesterol counts.

    45. Good night, sweetheart. Rest heals the body and has been shown to lessen the risk of heart trouble and psychological problems.

  • Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Unless further qualified, the term is usually taken to refer to a virus infection of the liver; also known as “infectious hepatitis”. Hepatitis is also (occasionally) a result of a bacterial, protozoan or other microbial infection. There is also Toxic hepatitis which is caused by poisoning of the liver with various chemicals (such as industrial solvents), drugs, or (very rarely) general anaesthetics.

Virus hepatitis occurs in two basic forms, one of which is called infectious hepatitis (or hepatitis A) and the other, serum hepatitis (or hepatitis B), which is also “infectious”. It is fairly certain that these two conditions, although clinically similar, are caused by different viruses and the modes of transmission are different.

In Hepatitis B, transmission is mainly by the injection or transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products, or by accidental skin pricks or other injuries caused by contaminated needles or other sharp objects. Transmission also occurs from inadequately sterilized hypodermic needles, syringes, surgical and dental instruments, tattooing instruments and razors. Hepatitis B is also common among narcotic addicts and others who use unsterile syringes for drug injections.

The virus which causes hepatitis A, by contrast, is mostly transmitted in the faeces. Although it can be spread by blood transfusion, the main route is from infective faeces to the mouth via the hands or objects contaminated with the faeces.

The patient with hepatitis may notice little or nothing wrong, but in more severe cases, the patient will have fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, a severe loss of appetite and aching in the muscles. Then jaundice, caused by an accumulation of yellow bile pigment in the blood, appears after a few days or, in some cases, a week or two from the onset of the symptoms. The liver may become enlarged and tender and may develop cirrhosis. The conditions may lead to death from liver failure.

In Holistic Lifecare, hepatitis patients are strongly advised to have adequate bed rest, with proper care in the handling of infected excreta. Alcoholic beverages should be strictly avoided.

The holistic remedy being suggested for total cure of Hepatitis is a combination of natural extracts of Eugenia caryophylatta, Musa cavendichii, Citrus lemonis, Euphorbia unispina and Capsicum frutescens,.

  • Portable brain stimulator

Brain stimulation with an electric device is being used to try to treat insomnia (lack of sleep), anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and bipolar disorder which are common modern day medical conditions. Depression may be more common than we can imagine. Many people sink into depression for reasons such as:traumatic childhood; life threatening or chronic disease;abusive relationship; childlessness; death of a beloved; difficult environment; economic misery; emotional or mental stress;  failure, lack of personality, or inferiority complex; heartbreak or divorce; hormonal imbalance; loss of job or business or livelihood; post-traumatic stress disorder; social, cultural, religious, or political trapping, bondage, or addiction. When such experiences weigh you down and impair your experience of good life, you need to help yourself.

Brain stimulation is a last resort. Try other means first. Talk and offload and share your pain with a party that understands and supports; do not cover it up with continuous work or sleep but find appropriate social support and outlets; do not abandon normal work and duties such as cleaning and tidying as bad environment adds to depression; do positive things such as a productive hobby, service, or pleasurable engagement; avoid alcohol and drugs; have a healthy diet (cheap or expensive) and try to get regular sleep; keep your mind off depressive thoughts through prayer, meditation, and good entertainment; keep away from toxic persons, environments, and conditions if you can; face your problems and try to solve them. If you do have to live with a problem, make sure you live the best you can. For some unmanageable mental conditions, a new device is available.

From the manufacturers: “Depression and anxiety can now be treated with a gentle, portable medical device that is cleared by the FDA and endorsed by the nation’s top doctors. Unlike electroshock therapy for bipolar depression, the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® causes no serious side effects and comes with a 60-Day Effectiveness Guarantee.Depression and anxiety can now be treated with a gentle, portable medical device that is cleared by the FDA and endorsed by the nation’s top doctors. Unlike electroshock therapy for bipolar depression, the Fisher Wallace Stimulator® causes no serious side effects…”

They will only ship a device if they receive faxed or emailed purchase authorization from a licensed healthcare practitioner. The device package costs $695. A version that includes a chronic pain treatment kit costs $715. The package includes: 1 Fisher Wallace Stimulator®, 1 Headset, 1 Headband, 8 Sponges (the sponges need to be replaced every two weeks), 2 AA batteries and an Instruction manual.

  • Baby sling, how safe for mother and child?

Baby sling, how safe for mother and child?

The world health organization reports that 80-90% of normal populations irrespective of race will at one point in

time develop pain in the lower back. Though it has been easy to discuss etiological factors for back conditions such as job type, sports, life style, smoking, alcohol, trauma , body proportion and infections, the mechanisms that underpin the complex symptoms have not been exhaustively explained. Pregnancy and the necessary conditions imposed by nursing a baby through the first 18 months of life bring impressed forces to bear on the back bones of the mother and the child she is nursing. The bones of the back are designed in such a way that there are curves, four for a mother and two for a new born child-the other two will develop when the child is able to hold his neck without support, and later when he begins to sit down unaided. These curves help the back bone to bear weight 16(sixteen)times the weight that can be handled by a vertebral column without bends—this is in accordance with engineering principles and in concert with Newtonian Physics(Hooks law). The implication is that any attenuation or exaggeration of these natural curves will be amplified into clinical problems the magnitude of which will be modified, depending on several other considerations.

It has become fashionable for young African mothers to put their babies in slings and place the slings on their necks with the babies spread out turtle posture, in front or back depending on what activities engaged them at the time. This is different from the older African method of carrying babies across the back with clothe belts of specific texture and size . It is also different from the relatively more expensive use of open or hooded wheeled baby carriage where babies are placed in more comfortable positions

This discussion highlights how the use of baby slings can harm the bones of the back and lead to early degeneration of the inter vertebral joints . For a mother, resulting back problems such as low back pain may not develop immediately, but later when mother is older. For the child, all sorts of problems involving not only the spine and backbone but other parts of the body such as heart, lungs, and even arrest of growth may occur. Mothers find them selves paying frequent visits to clinics because of one problem or the other. Some babies may become very restless and cry endlessly, refusing any methods of pacification, even breast milk, because, they are unable to speak out their ordeal, discomfort and pain

The problem of low back pain is worse for mothers who celebrate pregnancies with very short periods between pregnancies. In deed multi parous women that have had repeated exposure to the pregnancy hormones relaxin and progesterone( both are associated with excessive joint laxity and increased tendency for joints to sublux) are more likely to encounter probems.

Older mothers are particularly vulnerable ; their bones are already getting soft (osteoporotic) because levels of estrogen the female hormone responsible for maintenance of strong bones( via estrogen receptors in osteoblasts), begin to go down as from age 38.

Working mothers who also do much house hold activities such as cooking, washing, floor washing etc. are at increased risks .Also included are Mothers not getting enough sun light(required by custom to shield self and remain indoors), malnourished mothers not taking enough milk and calcium

    Others;

Tall mothers, height above 1.8meters. Short mothers, height below 1.4m,

Mothers with huge breasts, and mothers habitually wearing high heeled shoes

Mothers and babies who are homozygous SS or carry the trait-AS or SC,AC-In these conditions there is abnormal hemorheology(abnormal blood flow pattern) ,such that red blood cells die in large numbers when they try to move across tiny blood vessels of the capillary beds. The consequences arising from the fragile sickle shaped red cells and their markedly reduced deformability manifest in the form of frequent vaso- occlusive sickle cell crises

Mothers engaged in occupations which require them to stand for more than three hours or more in one or two stretches . In all these situations, the bones and joints of the back and the muscles that link them are engaged in more work than they are bioengineered to do, and the consequences from prolonged exposure to wear and tear will declare themselves sometime in the life of the individual-depending on duration.

Mothers of old and in fact in rural communities who carry babies on their backs follow some carefully learned procedures, babies are not immediately strapped on the back immediately after meals, during periods of illness and when they are engaged in physical activities which involve much repeated bending and standing——during prolonged periods of standing, sitting, stooping and squatting, babies become quickly uncomfortable and try to draw attention of mothers by crying, squeezing their trunks and trashing, mothers from higher socioeconomic background pay attention and respond affectionately ,others simply carry on

Positioning the babies involves the following

The shoulders are abducted and laterally rotated maximally, The hips are also in maximum abduction and lateral rotation

The neck is in extension and rotated in one direction to keep the face and chin away from mother’s upper back. The neck in normal humans has seven flat bones , with slots or holes placed at the extremes of the sides where huge blood vessels pass to and from the brain and skull. The bones of the neck are arranged in such a way as to allow for more nodding(flexion-extension) movements than rotatory/twisting ones. When mothers strap babies across the back, the neck is either allowed to oscillate between rotation, extension and flexion, or held to one side in twisted position with the blood vessels equally twisted ,resulting in narrowing or kinking .The neck bones and muscles provide protection for very important organs necessary for metabolism /growth and immunity of the growing child. These muscles can go into spasm ,and then fatigue with excessive metabolic wastes-the child will be in pain for as long it takes his mother to change his position or someone points out to her that child is in distress.

For the growing brain, any little disruption will affect something some where within the vast array of neuronal organization.

With the baby in sling or strapped on the back, thorax/chest region is curved backwards to reduce the normal kyphotic angle and the lumbar/waist region curved forward in excessive lordosis, but the prominent buttock of the African mother immediately limits anterior ward excursion of the baby’s pelvis, and so baby is held like a bow.

With the baby strapped into position in mothers back, the following changes can be observed —the thighs are held onto the back and sides of mothers abdomen so the legs are effectively prevented from dangling without support. With the baby sling, the legs dangle freely, but blood vessels and nerves are at increased risk of being trapped.

With the child on mothers back, the normal kyphosis (backward curve ) of the child’s backbone is distorted as it is forced into the hollow of mother’s back.

Abdominal organs-liver, spleen, intestine, and stomach are pressed into the little space left.

The lungs, heart and thick muscle of respiration-diaphragm which separates the trunk into the upper thorax and lower abdomen are all closely packed into this space.

Venous return to the heart may be affected. The bladder which is an abdominal organ up to age six in children is included here . The genitals –testicles particularly in males is also squeezed on the area of the waist of mother. The ligaments which hold the bones of the back together are forced into tension at three points mainly—the neck, thorax and lumbar regions. The ligaments and muscles which holds bones of the shoulders and waist together are also under tension.

When the sling is adjusted to hold baby close, the abdominal aorta; a huge blood vessels that supplies blood to the internal organs of reproduction, the bones and muscles of the waist , thighs, legs and feet , may be so compressed as to affect blood flow . Baby slides down and there is increased tendency for one group of muscles to slacken while the opposing groups go into exaggerated tension. As is often the case, Baby cries and trashes to draw mothers attention who draws sling tighter— This results in greater tension in the cervical (neck) and thoracic (chest) portions of the back bone. At some point, diaphragm is splint, reducing the thoracic capacity and child may find it difficult to breathe well; chest diseases which mothers cant explain.

Some mothers prefer to have the baby in front, resting partly on the abdomen within the sling, the resulting problems depend among other issues on whether or not the mother has abdominal type obesity, height and lifestyle, size of the baby etc . Similar to what has been discussed, the head dangles here and there-a condition not very healthy for the growing brain, which in life appears like tooth paste but contains nerve bundles arranged in awesome and sophisticated pattern. Unlike the back, there is no free space when baby is hung in front, and the child’s abdomen presses on that of his mother much like pushing one ball of doughnut against another. Apart from causing great discomfort for the child, his back bone is excessively bent backwards to fit into the sling, – and each time mom tries to adjust baby inside the sling, the joints and the different parts of the back bones which are still soft (fusion not complete until about age six) are jolted and slammed against other parts , the results though similar to what was discussed earlier are worse when baby is in the sling in front of a fat, tall heavily breasted Mom. For reasons that have been explained, there will be episodes of unexplained illnesses every now and then, involving, nearly every system or portion in the growing child. Developmental milestones may not be grossly affected but subtle deviations from normal will be observed often ascribed to growing pains, teething, malaria, seasonal variation disorders, spiritual problems etc

Keep babies preferably out of slings

If you must use baby slings, use the types that are adjustable and have enough pockets to house body segments-don’t use baby slings for extended periods of time –imagine your self in that position.

Observe, feel and listen to baby-particularly when in the sling—these are easier said, especially when someone else and not the mother is carrying baby in sling, and mother is not around to see how much pain and suffering baby is going through. Some mothers/parents in developed countries install what is referred to as ‘I am seeing you’’ soft ware into home video systems that capture activities in the home and enable them communicate with whoever is nursing their babies while they are away.

If you can afford it, get the hooded or open baby carriage system which comes in various forms, For those who can not afford such sophisticated products, any other arrangements will do-provided baby is placed to lie as comfortably as possible There are some that can be detached, assembled and placed as desired in cars, floors, tables, in offices and other safe places depending on the size and age of the baby. The bigger ones that can be pushed are now the vogue. Expensive quite alright but with small families, as opposed to large ones, they are affordable to those who plan.

  • Seizure syndrome, epilepsy and epilepticus in status

There has been a stream of traffic since the article on the above subject emerged. Many people have sent texts and e messages asking questions and for assistance in one area or the other. Most of the questions have been persistent on drug treatment and permanent cure, and I felt it was necessary I clarified a few of these issues. Please be informed that relevant medical professional regulatory bodies do not allow prescription of drugs by text or e messages. You may have all sorts of information on the internet, but just as you have pictures on face book, what ever ways you use the information accessed on the internet and the results you get are entirely your responsibility. If a patent medicine shop attendant picks up something from a book and hastens to apply it to any patient who comes along, he may not have issues, but those who have passed through formal systems of doing things are more careful not to play heroes with precious human lives, because there are sanctions put in place

Apart from seizures associated with fever, you really don’t want to talk about cure

Emphasis rather is on knowing the medical history of your parents, brothers sisters, uncles etc, to the best possible. Knowing your own medical background and that of your husband, wife or the person you intend to marry, and on recognizing patterns of the different types when they occur, particularly when the patient is a child (up to age 14)

During attacks, drugs are given in order to stop(abort) the seizure-this usually is the first thing a Doctor does, as he tries to find out possible causes and associations by asking so many questions. Stress had to be placed on the fact that you must be ready to answer these questions and not compound the efforts of the Doctor who in our environment is forced to rely on clinical judgment because, he does not have the benefits of expensive but very useful diagnostic machines. When seizures are due to obstructive lesions in the pathway for circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for instance leading to hydrocephalus and the brain of an affected child becomes very large, abscess in the brain occupying space, tumor growing rapidly some where in the brain, abnormal metabolic patterns in the brain, injury to brain tissues etc – can very quickly be diagnosed with the aid of machines such as computed axial tomography (CAT) scan, positron emission tomography(PET)-for seizures where derangement in EUC and other metabolites is suspect, electroencephalogram(EEG), Multi analyzer etc all of which can give you results within minutes of arrival in Hospital,

The drugs administered in respect of, how, when, where, -route of administration are all important .Equally important is knowing what not to give; these conditions are about the only ones in children where Doctors prefer the veins, the muscle, skin and the rectum/anus as safer routes to administer their drugs. They are also the conditions where they don’t rush to give drips( intravenous fluids)-here I am referring to medically qualified persons.

Two or three people wanted to know about surgical treatment of these conditions in India-There is no doubt that Neuro surgeons in that country have made giant strides in the past few years, but we also need to stress that success or failure of surgical interventions involving the brain can only be assessed on individual basis.

The reality of it all, is that results of surgery involving the brain in Children are not as forthcoming as the ease with which they are performed. Revision surgery is unavoidable in some cases and when they are seen the outcome are often talked about in whispers.

Many people have also come to discover that not all persons who seek medical treatment overseas have success stories to tell – the death of the wife of a former Nigerian head of state in the hands of an experienced surgeon and in one of the best Hospitals overseas should drive the need to establish good health facilies here in Nigeria.

Unfortunately those who should listen are not doing so-even when it is obvious that you can’t fly every one out. Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa did well to put the best facilities you can find on earth in South Africa ,and so when he developed respiratory problems, probably from reactivation of foci of M. Tuberculosis contracted during his prison years, he checked into one of such facilities, doing so with unalloyed confidence. Current information is that he has done so well he now views television will soon be discharged home – contrast that with the situation in here. Not too long ago, a prominent Nigerian went overseas after he had been given the not very pleasant diagnosis of late stage brain tumor and after taking him through several high medical tech machines, they couldn’t fault the diagnosis that was made here in Nigeria. They then asked him to come back here and undergo palliative care for the period left for him to live. He then began to ask questions, one of which was ‘where in Nigeria was he going to stay?” Officials of the Hospital then reminded him that dying in a hospital overseas from a terminal condition was a liability not a privilege.

The huge problems facing the health sector and education have their origin in Godlessness, such that people in position do not consider the interest of ordinary people once they get to positions of authority. If those in charge of running the various systems adhered to the basic prescription for peace, love and harmony as provided by Jesus Christ-do unto others as you would have them do unto you, this country would have since swum out of the present situation of hopelessness, and as a result of this problem of arrant insincerity, the poor continue to die young, while the rich continue to buy every thing including health and education.

Take for instance the current situation where Students in Public Universities are forced to idle way at home while their fellow Nigerians in private universities in their own country have continued to enjoy the academic momentum, because someone somewhere insists that an agreement signed over three years ago should be disrespected. Is it not egregious that a formidable constituency in the present dispensation like ASSUU is being treated with so much disdain and yet some labor unions known to be reasonably vocal and participatory at foreboding times like these have suddenly become amnesic? Why are those complaining about falling standards of education in this country, and who can not provide the yardstick employed not talking? It is for the reason that is now obvious; their children are studying overseas and so let the rain continue to fall into the houses of the other Nigerian students until Jesus comes back . So for majority of adult Nigerians the literacy score continues to drop, 68% before 2010, it is now below 50%, and with it the level of health education, in particular education concerning maternal and child care.

Therefore in situations where survival is the matter, and one CT scan of the brain costs #60,00.00 (probably about 2 times total family income), parents are advised to be more concerned about preventing attacks of seizure or epilepsy – prompt treatment of malaria, typhoid, mouth, throat and ear infections etc, avoid creating unnecessary stressful conditions for other people, that way you don’t have it your self. A few days after the introductory part of this article was published, the pop music star, Chris Brown suffered a seizure said to have been caused by stress. Older children(teenagers 13,14) in this computer age are exposed to intra psychic conflicts, some of these arising from intuitive perceptions-social media, school work, house chores, family, peer pressure and so on, parents are expected to be involved in the lives of their children, one very successful way of doing this is fellowship with God.

There is no over flogging the importance of taking children hospital in these conditions. One can only mention a few things on paper so that misunderstanding does not cloud good intentions. Once observed, you must be very warm and sympathetic to the affected child. He must receive love, attention and have access to all that there is to know about his illness Basic steps have been mentioned when attacks begin-lie patient face down, head turned to one side, don’t sit him up, so secretions will come out.

Some one talked about hot sand or clay-these are dangerous in situations that subsist during attacks.

Another person claims to have developed permanent herbal cure for seizures and epilepsy with guarantee, and says he is willing to engage who ever is interested for details, contact address will be provided to those interested.

As concerns some maintenance drugs, do not adjust dosage or change drugs on your own, even if you have moved and a different Doctor has taken over.

As regards dosage in children not working as expected – you must allow your Doctor titrate the dosage in graduated pattern until your child no longer has seizures-patience is important.

About foaming in the mouth mixed with blood—This does not mean situation is getting out of hands, and it may arise when the tongue is trapped between the teeth. Very strong tonic contractions of the throat muscles can also cause it, more so if the condition goes into status epilepticus.

I am awfully sorry I don’t have the time to reply text messages. You can call or send e mail.

For the pastor who sought permission to use three previous articles and was given the go ahead at no cost. Kindly return this favour; send a copy of the magazine as you promised, please the spirit of God lead you to do what is right.

    Dear Reader,

It is a good and great week! I’m glad to have you again on this column. Last week, I taught on duties of the women, the place of submission on the part of the woman. This week, I shall be showing you more duties of the women.

In the Book of Titus, the woman has another responsibility, which is to love her husband and her children, to be sensible, to think right, to be pure, chaste, virtuous, and sexually faithful to her husband in every way. Also, the woman is to be preoccupied with who she is, not how she looks. First Timothy 2:9-10 says a woman is to dress modestly and discreetly, with godly fear, sobriety, and modesty. She is to be modest and discreet, demonstrating godly fear.

Another responsibility of the woman in her family is to be a worker at home. Titus 2:5 describes her as a “keeper at home.” This doesn’t simply refer to her scrubbing floors, cleaning bathrooms, and all that. It simply connotes that the home is the sphere of her labours, whatever there might be. It is not that a woman is to keep busy all the time at home, or that she can never go out to work or do other things. It does not mean that she should always be doing menial tasks and home chores. What it simply means is that the home is the sphere of her divine assignment. The home is meant for keeping, and the one assigned by God to do that task is the woman. God will not do for you what you are meant to do.

The woman is to be the home keeper. She is to take care of her husband, and to provide for him and their children all they need as they live in the home. Materially, she is to translate the resources her husband brings home into a comfortable and blessed life for her family. She is to take the spiritual things she knows and learns, and pass them on to her children. She is a keeper at home. She must accept the responsibility to pray for the family. If she does not, no one else will.

You are expected to portray an exemplary lifestyle before your children. According to John Maxwell, “Your character is your most effective means of persuasion.” This assertion is more applicable in the lives of our children. It is important that you let these children under your care see you living out the Word of God on a daily basis. That way, you will create lasting positive notion on their lives like no preaching or lecturing can.

Learn to say words like “thank you, I appreciate you, I’m grateful,” and many more to them. Do not take it for granted that they are available to serve you, rather show gratitude to them for whatever they contribute to your life, family or your job.

Endeavour to give these children listening ear, so as not to only be able to know what is happening to them, but also to be able to provide godly instruction and counsel. Another major thing in nurturing them spiritually is to always keep their confidence. Never make your discussions with them subject to any discussion with others, otherwise, they lose confidence in you.

There is no one who can pray as passionately for your family like you would. You alone know the true state of your home, so you are in the best position to know what to do to keep it safe from all forms of wickedness. That is why my husband often testifies that he has not had the first concern over our home, because I have consistently stood in my place as a keeper of the home.

I have always taken what my husband provides, including the vision of the ministry God has committed into his hands, and passed them unto the children and every other member of our household. No concern has ever risen, because everyone knows where to fit in per time. That shall also become your testimony, in Jesus’ name.

Effectively handling the duties of a woman both to your husband and children demands a life in Christ.
