  • Buruji Kashamu in low key birthday

Buruji Kashamu in low key birthday

Controversial businessman and Peoples Democratic Party’s financier in Ogun State, Chief Buruji Kashamu, turned a year older on Monday, but he celebrated the day low key in his Lagos home. Close friends of the Ijebu-Igbo-born billionaire, who has been in the eye of the storm lately, were there to rejoice with him.

Kashamu’s loyal friends were said to have earlier hinted that they were planning something big for the politician, but he counselled against any lavish celebration. Although the reason for his low-key disposition could not be immediately ascertained, observers believe it might be because of the numerous political battles he has had to fight lately.  Only last week, his case on alleged trafficking in narcotics came up in the United States, where the presiding judge ruled that he must face prosecution. The US law enforcement agencies have run into brick walls in their quest to bring Kashamu to justice. But observers believe that with the latest ruling, the US authorities might have set the machinery in motion for his extradition.

  • Impotence

Impotence is the inability of a man to perform the sexual act satisfactorily. It may consist of a weak erection, inability to gain an erection, loss of sexual desire, premature ejaculation or loss of normal sensation at the time of ejaculation.

Transient impotence is fairly common and does not imply a physical or psychological disorder. It is often related to mild degrees of anxiety, depression, pre-occupation or fatigue associated with ordinary problems of daily living.

Chronic impotence, on the other hand, is due to either physical or psychological reasons. acageing, chronic debilitating disease, alcoholism, drug addiction, diabetic neuropathy, disease of the nervous system; especially spinal cord damage, endocrine disorder, damage to the urethra, large hydrocoeles and hernias.

Various drugs, including certain anti-hypertensive drugs, may produce impotence in some men. The psychological reasons for chronic impotence often include guilt and anxiety about the sexual act itself, hostility towards the partner, unwillingness to assume responsibility for all that goes with marriage and children, unhappiness at home and neglect by the wife, who may even neglect herself to the point of becoming unattractive and undesirable, especially after menopause.

Apart from the causes already mentioned, other known causes of impotence are fatty tissues (like in obesity), venereal diseases, stress and excessive intake of alcohol.

When a couple cannot have a child, the wife is always thought to be the culprit and looked down upon as an outcast, with disdain. Yet, many a man constitutes the weak link in the chain most times, without the slightest suspicion that they are.

    Prevention and Control

From observations, the failure to perform sexual acts effectively could be due to disuse of the organ over a long period  a condition we recognize biologically as disuse atrophy. Every part of the body must be exercised (although, in this case, not indiscriminately!). Conversely, over-indulgence in sexual activity in early days in a man’s life should be avoided, particularly where stimulants are used. These can cause impotence at early middle and old age.

    Treatment and Control of Impotence

In treating this disorder, the patient is advised to rest well. In Holistic Lifecare, it is strongly advised that the client should go back to nature. Firstly, a strong cleansing herb is given to him, to help remove fats from his internal organs. The patient should abstain from sexual intercourse for a specific period while he is being treated. He must stop alcoholic drinks and smoking. A healthy, energy-giving diet is recommended.

Most importantly, the Holistic remedy being suggested for impotence is a combination of natural extracts of herbs such as Colocasia antiquorum, Musa parasidiaca, Triumfetta cordifolia and Verbena officinalis.

  • Remember Amata people

    Remember Amata people

THIS is a special appeal to Senator Uche Chukwumerije. And it is my belief that my great Senator will do my wish which is also the wish of the whole people of Amata in Abia State.

Amata is a village in Umuelem Isuochi. Life in the locality is tough. People are not happy with the level of development there. They complain everyday.

What we need in this village is development. We need good roads. We want electricity and other amenities that will create comfort for people.

We are also in need of educational development, and this is possible if we have well-equipped schools. Therefore, we are expecting schools that can give our children qualitative education.

All these needs are dividends of democracy which I believe can be provided by Senator Chukwumerije.

The couple’s turbulent marriage which produced a child had earlier been dissolved following which the accused took the custody of their child and moved into her father’s house at Olusoga Street, Mushin, a Lagos suburb.

The case has been adjourned to June 9.

  • Lufthansa starts new era

    Lufthansa starts new era

For Nigerian travellers and the travellers all over the world that patronize the German airline, Lufthansa, a chapter in their travel experience will be opened as the airline starts receiving bookings for its latest product. The product is the newly developed Premium Economy Class.

However, even though bookings have begun, travellers would have to wait until November to experience the new product. For Nigerian travellers, it might not be long before they will experience the new products being part of the long haul routes the new products will be deployed to.

The new premium class has comfortable new seats and up to 50 per cent more room than the economy class seats.

Premium Economy Class was presented to the public in March during the 2014 ITB-Berlin, and many travellers are looking forward to the new product. The Premium Economy Class would initially be fitted on the airline’s  Boeing 747-8. The new seats will gradually be fitted on the entire long-haul fleet within 12 months.

“Our Premium Economy Class will create a completely new travel experience that combines affordability with greater comfort. The seats offer up to 50 per cent more room than Economy Class and will position us in a premium segment within the international competitive environment,” said Jens Bischof, CCO & member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board in charge of Sales, Product and Marketing, during a press conference at the Lufthansa stand in Hall 25.

The new product will enable Lufthansa to meet the requirements of many business and private passengers who travel with other airlines in a similar travel class or who fly Economy Class due to travel specifications. Following the introduction of its new full-flat Business Class, Lufthansa created a much wider gap between Economy and Business Classes. As a result, there is now room for its new Premium Economy Class, which offers considerably more space and comfort as well as many additional product features, but is closer to Economy Class than Business Class in terms of its average prices. The move also means that Lufthansa is introducing a completely new travel class for the first time in 35 years.

“The design and features of the new seat in particular are based on extensive passenger surveys and workshops with sales partners – a process that has been successfully used at Lufthansa. Following the upgrade of our First and Business Class, the installation of 3,600 seats on all 106 of our long-haul aircraft in just one year will mean another step towards becoming a five-star airline,” continued Bischof. “We expect to see more than 1.5 million passengers per year in our new Premium Economy Class.”

The  seats were designed in partnership with the company müller/romca Industrial Design in Kiel and produced by the seat manufacturer ZIM Flugsitz near Lake Constance. Depending on the aircraft type, they are up to 3 centimetres wider and provide greater privacy as well as approximately 10 centimetres more room at the side thanks to each seat having its own wide armrest and a centre console between the seats.

The back rest can be reclined further and the seat pitch is a significantly more spacious 38 inches, or 97 centimetres. As a result, passengers have around one-and-a-half times as much room as Economy Class.

The head rests can be set to the exact height desired and folded at the sides for added comfort and support. Height-adjustable foot rests from the second row back and – for technical reasons – leg supports with an integrated foot rest in the first row provide extra comfort. Practical features around the seats such as a bottle holder, electrical socket and lots of storage space for passengers’ belongings also help to ensure a relaxed and pleasant journey.

With a baggage allowance of two items weighing up to 23 kilogrammes each, passengers can take twice as much free luggage with them compared with Economy Class. For an extra EUR 25, passengers can also enjoy the comfort of the Lufthansa Business Lounges before their departure. Lounges were previously only open to status customers and are otherwise unavailable on a paying basis.           Check-in and boarding procedures as well as hand luggage regulations are the same as in Economy Class.

An enhanced service awaits Premium Economy passengers on board. They are greeted with a welcome drink and will find their own water bottle as well as a high-quality amenity kit with practical travel accessories at their seat. Meals are presented on menus commensurate with the new travel class and served on porcelain tableware.

Passengers can navigate the extensive in-flight entertainment programme using their own touchscreen monitor on the seat in front of them. This can also be done using a remote control, which serves as a controller for video games as well. The screens are 11 to 12 inches (28 to 30 centimetres), which makes them at least 2 inches bigger than the screens in Economy Class, depending on the aircraft type. A wide selection of magazines and newspapers completes the range of entertainment on offer.

Up to 52 seats, depending on aircraft type, and attractive pricing Lufthansa Premium Economy Class is located within the cabin as a clearly identifiable separate compartment between Business and Economy Class.      It has a high-quality design and contains between 21 and 52 seats, depending on the aircraft type.         Installation of the new travel class, which is to be carried out on a gradual basis, sub-fleet by sub-fleet, will start this autumn and finish in summer 2015. The first sub-fleet to be fitted with the new seats will be the Boeing 747-8.

Ticket prices in the new Premium Economy Class will be closer to Economy Class than Business Class – a return flight across the North Atlantic or to Asia will cost an additional EUR 600 on average.

The introduction of Premium Economy Class will complement the many improvements that Lufthansa plans to make in all classes on board and on the ground by 2015. By this point in time, the entire long-haul fleet will have the new First and Business Class – which will involve the installation of 7,000 new seats on the company’s aircraft.    Apart from the interior of the cabins, services on board and on the ground are also being enhanced. The goal is to demonstrate to an even greater degree the qualities of being a dedicated host with a keen understanding of service and hospitality.

  • Sexual violence, rape and HIV: Matters arising

Sexual violence, rape and HIV: Matters arising

    Way Forward

The aggressive social marketing that drug manufacturers have come to be known by  seems to give people the impression that HIV is  just another parasite like the one associated with Malaria. It is time we took a second look at the strategies being  currently applied in the  fight against the virus. HIV test kits are everywhere in patent medicine stores, some genuine, many others fake, and so are many different fake anti-retroviral drugs. Young people, and criminals who rape women of all ages, don’t have the mind and time to negotiate for safer sex, but instead carry these drugs with them.

There is an urgent need to reactivate all relevant infrastructures set up to counter the spread of HIV/ AIDS. Apathy on the part of government, perhaps as a result of global economic recession, which has caused  marked reduction in funds from donor countries and Non governmental organizations (NGOS) has reduced the frequency, quantity and quality of anti HIV/AIDS campaign. Governments at all levels have been doing what they can, but can do more by injecting more funds into the moribund programs, evaluating existing ones and formulating new policies where necessary.

Governments can also discourage the  mass distribution of condoms as a way of encouraging safer sex.  The idea was intuitively seminal at the beginning, but we now know that the  unintended negative consequences outweigh  the short term benefits . At one  occasion where youths  from different background congregated, a young lady  not experienced in such matters actually had sex with a total stranger and later  confided in her friend that she actually lured the young man because she was fascinated by the packet and wanted to have an experience. Unfortunately the experienced male drew off the barrier at the peak of  it all and  infected her with the virus. He has since disappeared from her life .

Nothing seems to be working any where in the country, but as we grapple with problems, we can find ways  if the will is there. Special courts can be set up just for sex related crimes ,with the removal of injunctions. That way, habitual  or serial sex offenders can be promptly kept away so they can’t prey upon the innocent. Instead of blaming the victim, the police will then have the opportunity of understanding the far reaching consequences of rape.

While in prison, mental rehabilitation should be a major element of the  behavior change programs.

The social media is an avenue currently under utilized in bringing awareness of the bidirectional  health risks associated with rape. It is time we began to  warn  restless  souls that  HIV is real. It is  very much around and spreading. So that people, particularly those  battling with prevention fatigue  will understand that a single blind moment of sexual gratification can bring  a life time of sadness, for the victim and the perpetrator

Churches need to also do better than what you find in those places of worship where what matters is the crowd regardless of their  patterns of behavior. For those without dress codes, even pastors can be seen struggling to keep their eyes away from the exposed  body regions

Family members  should be careful who comes near, cuddles our kids or plants kisses on them. Age appropriate dress codes should be the norms in the house. Children should also be given age appropriate sex education and trained to report any  unusual exploration of  certain parts of the body to Mom and Dad

It is important to stress that in resource limited countries with  little or no knowledge  about forensic investigations, prevention is safer, and cheaper than cure. Victims of rape should immediately see a qualified medical Doctor ,who will outline what actions, general and specific will need to be taken. People often go to Hospitals days  to weeks after, by which time, you can only do little  because  seeding of infective microorganisms will have begun.  For a sexually active victim who does not know his or her  HIV status, a positive test done  less than a week after the incident may not mean the virus was contracted from the assailant. The same goes for Hepatitis B,  or Syphilis, both have long incubation periods

A pregnancy test using urine or blood sample is mandatory . The family  Doctor may recommend emergency contraception if victim is a woman in the  reproductive age group, to avoid an unwanted pregnancy ,but also given birth to an unwanted HIV positive baby whose status may not be known until he is over a year old

Joy Emordi’s daughter weds in style

Senator Joy Emordi made a telling appearance on the Abuja social firmament last Saturday as men of ‘timbre and calibre’ rallied round her in a show of moral support. • Gabriel Suswam

    Gabriel Suswam

GBOKO is a very important town in Benue State. It is a town populated by Nigerians from different parts of the country. Foreigners always visit the place because of its historical significance.

Apart froTheodore A Orjim all these, the Tiv are proud of the town because it is their ancestral home. They love the place, and this fact is not hidden.

But Gboko cannot be regarded a developed town. It lacks modern facilities. The Tiv are not happy with this situation.

This is why I am calling on Governor Gabriel Suswam to do something urgently about the town. People will not forget him, if he gives the place a facelift which all Tiv are eager to see.

    Jato James,

    Gboko, Benue State.
