    Embellishment and organic elements

Legance in Sustainability. That was the focus of a recent fashion show in Lagos.

The theme centred around showing how elegant sustainable fabrics are and the models set the runway on fire with the latest collection by Osasogie Jane Idemudia, CEO Jane’s fashion.

The inspiration also stemmed from the intersection of vintage and sustainable pieces.  It also captured the essence of organic elements through innovative and sustainable materials. ” One standout piece was a gown featuring embellishments, highlighting the designers commitment to blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge techniques”.

The runway experience was designed to be immersive, with dynamic lighting and an ethereal soundtrack enhancing the theme.

She added that: “Each show segment represented a different aspect of this concept, from the birth of an idea to its fleeting presence on the runway.”

Idemudia added: “In 2024, I am excited to further push the boundaries of sustainable fashion. Our upcoming collection will showcase a deeper commitment to eco-friendly materials and production processes”.

In addition, the brand will also be exploring augmented reality integration to enhance the customer experience. “Collaborations with local artisans and a focus on inclusive sizing are also on the horizon. The goal is to create beautiful designs and contribute positively to the fashion industry’s social and environmental impact.”

According to the designer, one of the challenges in the sector is the increasing demand for sustainable practices. “While this presents a challenge in sourcing and manufacturing, it’s also a significant opportunity for differentiation. Embracing sustainability aligns with current consumer values and opens doors for partnerships and collaborations with like-minded brands”.

On the flip side, the rapid pace of digital transformation, she said poses a challenge for smaller brands. “Still, it also provides opportunities to reach global audiences through e-commerce and social media.”

Government support, Idemudia believes is crucial for fostering a sustainable and thriving fashion industry. “Policies incentivising environmentally friendly practices, such as tax breaks for sustainable materials or production methods, would go a long way. Additionally, supporting education and training programs for emerging designers, especially in technology and sustainable design, could contribute to the industry’s growth. Fairtrade regulations and ethical labour standards would also ensure a more equitable and responsible fashion ecosystem.”

  • Breathing life into Ebonyi health sector

Breathing life into Ebonyi health sector

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru inherited a health sector that was on the verge of collapse. But eight months after he took over, he is turning things around, reports Ogochukwu Anioke (Abakaliki).

The health system in Ebonyi State when Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru took over was in a  shambles and suffering from serious brain drain popularly referred to as the ‘japa syndrome’ as health workers joined their colleagues across the country.

Then, the state health sector had just few medical doctors and a handful of nurses. The Primary Health Care Centres (PHC) were mostly moribund; same with the General Hospitals. While the previous administration committed a lot of funds to the health sector, allocating the highest amount to it in a particular year, it remained comatose.

This is because the majority of the funds went into funding tertiary health, especially the construction of the ultra-modern new Health University and Teaching Hospital in Uburu.

The institution was later handed over to the Federal Government just like the administration of Governor Martin Elechi handed over the State University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki to the Federal Government, which was merged with the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki to become the Federal Teaching Hospital and now Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

The implication of these handovers is that though the state has built two quality teaching hospitals, it has none as they were handed over to the Federal Government.

Overtime, the Federal Government was unable to properly manage and fund the Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, leading to dilapidation of the place. The previous administration had to step in from time to time to ensure that the place remained afloat and catered to the health challenges of the people as it was probably the only functional health institution in the state. Its collapse would have been a total collapse of the entire health sector.

The previous administration also undertook rehabilitation of the General Hospitals. However, this largely involved physical upgrade of the structures, perimeter fencing and other ancillary works.

Inside, there were not enough bed spaces for patients, little or no supply of medical equipment and drugs and, most importantly, inadequate medical personnel to treat patients.

This means that the Teaching Hospital, while still battling with poor funding from the Federal Government, coupled with the japa syndrome it was experiencing, continued to be over burdened with the health challenges of the state. To this end, the state government carried out interventions in the hospital, including building a virology centre to fight the lassa fever and other viral diseases.

It also built a modern emergency unit for the hospital and carried out other interventions, including supply of dialysis machines and other equipment. But this was still seen as a wrong approach to the challenges.

The location of the hospital meant that it was not readily accessible to poor villagers in the hinterlands who may not possess the financial capacity to make the journey to the hospital, especially in emergency situations. This situation led to lots of avoidable deaths being recorded in the rural areas.

It is on this premise that Nwifuru on assumption of office promised to revitalise the health sector. In his campaign manifesto named the ‘Peoples Charter of Needs’’, Nwifuru notes that there is need for an infrastructural overhaul of the three tiers of healthcare delivery.

Some of them are the Virology Centre, a world-class referral hospital with Centres of Excellence – the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences and Teaching Hospital, Uburu and the 13 general hospitals, including the magnificent new FETHA emergency complex.

He notes that ‘in full cognizance that Health is wealth, my administration shall be committed to improve healthcare delivery in the State, through: “A. Re-establishment of Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. B. Improvement of service delivery in the general hospitals. C. Staffing and equipping of the primary healthcare development agencies to enhance quality services.

“D. Strengthening midwife service scheme. E. Introduction of regular free medical outreaches and health care awareness campaign, especially in underserved areas. G. Collaboration with health care professionals, faith-based organisations and development partners in healthcare delivery. G. Enhancement of capacity of health care professionals through exchange programmes and training. H. Introduction of medical volunteer service scheme to support health care delivery in the State. I. Provision of Government Community health scheme for the less privileged and vulnerable ones. J. Supporting Ebonyi State Health Insurance Scheme. K Provision of Health insurance scheme for Ebonyians of 80 years and above.”

Within weeks of assuming duties, the governor ordered the recruitment of 195 health workers to boost its efficiency. The decision, he said, was in fulfillment of his promise to reposition the sector.

“The Governor of Ebonyi, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has approved the immediate recruitment of medical personnel for the 13 general hospitals.

“Those to be employed include 39 medical doctors, 39 nurses, 39 laboratory scientists, 39 pharmacists and 39 health attendants,” a statement by his media aide said.

This done, the governor decided to buy brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for the medical doctors to enhance their work.

The governor’s Special Assistant on new Media, Leo Oketa, said the SUVs were bought for the medical doctors in the General Hospitals, to ensure they were at work and respond to duty calls.

“This, in no small measure, will give them good confidence and assurance of their welfare, having been employed by the state government.

“It is meant as well to ensure that they do not convert the hospital ambulances to their private cars. All the SUVs have been paid for and all of them delivered,” he said

Beside, Oketa said the governor also bought 52 ambulances for the General Hospitals. “Fifty-two were paid for, but 20 had arrived. The rest would be delivered soon. The governor intends to have two ambulances for each General Hospital in Ebonyi State,” he explained.

Speaking to reporters, Nwifuru threw more light on his efforts to reposition the health sector. He said: “We are taking our development according to sectors. By the first week of June, we will go into health sector fully. It will be a comprehensive overhaul. Comprehensive in the sense that everyone in the sector and the people of Ebonyi State will be satisfied.

“The staff will be happy, the management will be happy and our hospitals will work. And what are those exceptional things we want to do in the health sector?

“By the Special Grace of God, Mr. President has agreed to demerge the Federal Teaching Hospital and we will have our own state teaching hospital.

“Mr. President also agreed to give us 100 consultants from the Federal Government. This was after I explained to him how to get the health sector working and how we intend to step it down in Ebonyi.

“Before the end of June, we will have not fewer than five consultants and three medical doctors in each of our general hospitals.

“Why do we say June? We have paid around N11.2billion to equip our general hospitals and, in doing that, we will have four specialist hospitals, one per zone. “Specialist in the sense that every zone will have two MRI machines, two computer tomography (ct) scan machines and other intensive machines.

“These machines will be functional for 24 hours. We have at least paid for 11 1000kva generators for these specialist hospitals,” he said.

Nwifuru explained that the aim was to ensure that patients get quality treatment at the general hospitals instead of taking the long tedious journey to Abakaliki.

“The idea is that if you visit the general hospital in your zone, and your case is one for referral to the specialist hospital in your zone, then you will go there.

“Our intention is that what you cannot get in these specialist hospitals, you cannot get it anywhere in this country.

“We recalled our ambulances because they are dilapidated. We have embarked on purchasing brand-new ambulances for our hospitals. As i speak to you, out of the 52 ambulances we paid for, 20 are already with us.

“We employed 36 doctors when we came into office. We wanted to make them 39 but we did not have the manpower, and three out of the 36 we employed were already working. So, we have 33, in addition to those who were at the general hospitals before now, making them a little over 40.

“We have resolved that every medical doctor working in any of our general hospitals, must get a brand new SUV from us. By the special grace of God, the SUVs are already parked in the Governor’s Lodge – paid for and delivered to us.

“This is to ensure the doctors do not convert the ambulances into their private cars. So, we are getting ready to do something exceptional in the health sector,” he said.

The governor, a few days later distributed the SUVs to the medical doctors working in general hospitals, including the Government House Clinic. He handed over the ambulances. The governor, while inaugurating the vehicles at the Governor’s Lodge, Ochudo Centenary City, Abakaliki said the aim of buying them was to enable them respond to call appropriately and enjoined them to use the vehicles for official purposes.

The governor, who was represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, reiterated his commitment to improve the health of the people and directed that the ambulances be parked in the general hospitals.

He congratulated them and urged them to use the vehicles for the benefit of the people.

“The vehicles should be used for the purpose for which they were meant for and to also cater for the health of our people.

“All the general hospitals have been provided with ambulances and also to inform you that the ambulances should be parked right in the hospital. It is for the use of the hospital not for private use,” he said.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, represented by the Medical Director, Onueke General Hospital, Ezza South Local Government Area (LGA), Dr. Ezeogo Lawrence, applauded the governor for providing official vehicles for the medical doctors to make their jobs easy.

Ekuma assured that the medical doctors would adhere strictly to his directive and give the state the best medical services that the people deserve.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chief Executive, Hospital Management Board, Dr. Nwali Okata James, expressed their gratitude to the governor for the gesture, describing it as the first of its kind.

Nwali, who chronicled the achievements of the governor in the sector and workers welfare, thanked Nwifuru for providing the SUV jeeps, including ambulances for the smooth running of the general hospitals.

He promised that they would perform their duties creditably and prayed God to give the governor sound health as well as guide and protect him.

Some of the doctors who could not hide their joy after receiving the SUV cars, including the Chief Medical Director Ezzamgbo General Hospital, Ohaukwu LGA; Dr. Chidi Ehiem; the Medical Officer Onueke General Hospital, Ezza South LGA, Dr. Mercy Nwokpo and the Medical Officer, General Hospital Ishiagu, Ivo LGA, Dr. Agwu Chimaobi Francis, praised the governor for his magnanimity and vowed to be diligent.

Also, the governor distributed 40 new motorcycles to health officers heading Primary healthcare facilities in the state.

At the kick off of the programme at the Ministry of Health in Abakaliki, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekumah, charged the health workers to show greater commitment to their duties.

Ekuma explained that the state government bought the motorcycles using IMPACT fund, adding that the aim was to ensure quality health services delivery in the hinterland.

“Health officers, as well as Women Development Committee members, are by this gesture expected to step up their efforts to enhance service delivery, in the interest of our people,” he said. The commissioner congratulated the 40 health workers who benefited from this first batch of the programme, adding that others who indicated interest would get theirs in the second batch.

Ekuma urged them to take advantage of the mobility to reach out to pregnant women and children who missed antenatal or immunisation care to know why and look at the possibility of closing the gap.

He noted that there were some rural communities, which could not easily be accessed by cars, and said with the motorcycles, coverage of those areas would be done easily.

According to him, “this is what we observed, but with the help of these motorcycles, we want workers in those areas to ensure that they reach the hinterland and increase the immunisation coverage. These motorcycles are also needed for other health services including monitoring the pregnant women.”

Ekuma advised the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture by showing more commitment and efficiency in their duties.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary Health, Dr. Sabinus Nwibo, said the motorcycles would facilitate the movement of the health workers and help the rural populace receive adequate healthcare.

He said modalities were in place to guarantee proper supervision of the facilities provided by the state government to revitalise the health sector.

The Programme Manager of IMPACT, Mr. Patrick Njoku Ogbodo, noted that the government followed due process of the office and World Bank to purchase the motorcycles.

He expressed optimism that the motorcycles would help them to visit their clients in their homes and ensure that babies of pregnant mothers are delivered by trained staff members.

The Health Officer, Onunwakpu in Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Mr. Daniel Nkwuda, who spoke on behalf of other beneficiaries, thanked the state government and the IMPACT Manager for making their dreams come through.

He promised that the beneficiaries were not going to fail in their assignment, but would use the motorcycles to impact positively on the lives of the people, through improved health care delivery system.

The governor’s gesture drew praises from many Nigerians, including a renowned social critic, Reno Omokri.

In a statement on his Social Media handle, Omokri urged other governors to emulate Nwifuru’s gesture. He noted that it is one good approach to fighting brain drain in the health sector.

He said: “Other governors could learn a thing or two from Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru’s approach to ending the japa syndrome amongst doctors.

“Governor Nwifuru bought SUVs for doctors working at government-owned General Hospitals in Ebonyi. That is the type of out-of-the-box thinking that Nigeria needs.

“Of all the Southeastern states, Ebonyi has been the most marginalised, even by fellow Southeasterners.

“But in the last eight years, they have been blessed with good leadership above any other state in that zone. Doctors who are paid a decent salary and provided with housing and vehicles by their employers, as is being done in Ebonyi, are less likely to japa.

“And he even patronised assembled made-in-Nigeria vehicles. Even better. He is motivating doctors and improving the value of the Naira in one stroke. Well done, Mr. Governor,” he added.

Also, the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ebonyi appreciated the governor for the gesture.  Spokesperson of the state chapter of the party, Simbad Ogbuatu, in a statement said it demonstrates the governor’s exceptional commitment towards overhauling the health system in the state.

He said the initiative would contribute greatly to the service delivery of the medical doctors.

“This rare gesture demonstrates his unwavering dedication to improving the quality of healthcare services, particularly for our rural communities.

“His foresight in recognising the need for routine medical check-ups for the downtrodden, our octogenarians etc that requires routine medical monitoring due to their age, is truly remarkable,” he said.

  • Yahoo Boy stabs parents as black magic soap fails to bring expected fortune

Yahoo Boy stabs parents as black magic soap fails to bring expected fortune

In a fit of fury, a 20-year-old Yahoo Boy (internet fraudster) has stabbed his parents at their home in Ibadan, Oyo State, because his mother refused to reveal her real name for him to activate a black magic soap designed to bring him good fortune, KUNLE AKINRINADE reports.

But for the quick intervention of bystanders, a 20-year-old suspected Yahoo Boy, Daniel Bamidele, would have sent his parents to early graves penultimate Thursday.

Daniel’s mother, Titilayo, was said to have run out of their home in Apabielesin area of Ibadan, Oyo State with serious wounds, calling for help as her son sneaked into their home and attacked her and the father with a machete.

The alarm raised by her had attracted bystanders, some of whom rushed into the house, held Daniel down and dispossessed him of the machete he had used to attack his parents.

When he had been dispossessed of the long knife by neighbours who held him down and freed his father from his grip, Daniel explained that he had been earning a living from cybercrime otherwise called yahoo business for some time.

He said his parents were aware that he already built a three-bedroom bungalow from the proceeds of the cybercrime.

He said he had promised that he would get a store for his mother and stock it with goods so she could become a big trader once he recorded a breakthrough.

He added that his mother and elder brother connived to fleece him of the sum of N2.5 million despite the promise he made to get her a store and stock it with goods.

Daniel said: “I purposely lured my mother from a church programme she was attending, and as soon as we arrived home, I attacked her with a knife and was already inflicting cuts on her body when my father tried to save her from me.

Read Also: Fresh crisis looms in Rivers as Assembly overrides Fubara’s assent on four bills

“I attacked my father too because if I had not stabbed both of them, they would have succeeded in killing me.”

Speaking further on his reasons for attacking his mother and father with a knife, Daniel accused his mother of giving him a fake name which rendered useless the magic black soap he had secured from the priest of a white garment church.

He also noted that he made his elder brother his next of kin in his bank documentation but the same elder brother had been trying to play smart with his money.

He said: “I am a 200-level student of LAUTECH (Ladoke Akintola University of Technology) and I have built a three-bedroom bungalow from the money I made from doing yahoo business.

“I am angry with my parents, particularly my mother, for giving me a fake name instead of her real name.

“There is a particular black magic soap that I have been using lately. The soap was given to me by the priest of a white garment church named Mathew.

“I was the one who bought a generator for Pastor Mathew’s church around Ona Grammar School in Ogbomosho.

“The soap was meant to bring me good fortune, but there was the need for me to call my mother’s name into it before it could work.

“My mother told me that her name is Titilayo. But when I called the name into the soap, it did not work. Hence, I got angry and decided to stab her.”

Daniel’s mother, Titilayo, however said she did not collect any money from him.

She said: “I was called on the phone to come pick up my son from school at LAUTECH when he started exhibiting mental illness.

“When we got home, his father brought a native medicine home and gave him to use. He slept off after taking the medicine.

“However, when he woke up, he demanded the whereabouts of his phone and I told him I did not take his phone. He landed several blows on me.

“He is a liar; I did not collect any money from him.”

But Bamidele’s father accused his wife of being in the know of everything pertaining to how his son ventured into yahoo business and how he built a house from the money he made from the fraudulent activity.

“My wife was the one that indulged him (Daniel). She knew when her son started building a house, yet she did not tell me,” he said.

  • Putin’s 143 million prisoners

    Putin’s 143 million prisoners

    • By Diane Francis

Amidst all the attention about Donald Trump and America’s 2024 Presidential election, the faux “re-election” of Vladimir Putin rolls on. Of course, it is a sham and he will win on March 17 because Russia is a criminal organization where elections are window-dressing and speech is about as free as it is inside China’s Politburo. Even so, credible polls reveal that support for Putin’s war ebbs as the conflict drags on, killing or maiming 315,000 and imperilling another 300,000 Russians at the warfront.

But politics are also about “local” issues and Russians are upset because eggs are scarce and expensive, interest rates high, and frozen pipes burst constantly leaving hundreds of thousands without heat. But Russians endure by using dark humor and sarcasm to express feelings and opinions. One anti-war joke making the rounds these days is that “Putin’s partial mobilization means that you are drafted in whole and return back with parts missing”.

But this election is different because movements opposing the war appear which may be why Putin suggests, through back channels, that he will accept a ceasefire even though, publicly, he doubles down. His latest billboard campaign boasts Imperially beneath his image that “Russia’s borders do not end anywhere” and recently declared that he still wants all of Ukraine.

Surely Putin realizes that his army cannot beat a NATO-backed Ukraine. At the same time, however, he also realizes that he cannot lose power at home. So he bides his time and hopes for Western war fatigue and a Trump victory in the fall. This week, Trump won the Iowa Republican primary and repeated that he could solve the Ukraine war “very fast” – a pledge only possible if the White House threatens to stop providing military aid to Ukraine unless it negotiates a cease-fire. But Europeans rally to help Ukraine, in response to Washington’s political gridlock, and Kyiv is about to deploy this spring a few dozen F16s, donated by EU nations, that could decimate Putin’s hapless cannon fodder along the front line.

But internal threats lurk inside Russia. Its obscene casualty rate has sparked a low-key, but effective anti-war protest from women relatives of soldiers, dubbed the “white scarves” movement. They hide their identities, gather to lay carnations at unknown soldier’s monuments, and have issued a manifesto calling Putin’s mobilization of their menfolk “legalized slavery”. Other groups have sprung up in remote regions where a disproportionate number of men from ethnic minorities have been press-ganged into the military and died. Putin avoids putting into uniform the rich, well-connected young “white” Russians who live in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as described in my June 12 newsletter “Putin’s other genocides”.

Russian draftees die in droves due to improper training and equipment. Once inducted, they disappear, leaving relatives in the dark as to their whereabouts or condition. Many deaths are unreported and reports surface that conscripts have been shot as deserters for retreating or for refusing to obey dangerous orders. Army morale is low and many escape and hide. A recent investigation alleged that a group of draftees, who complained to officers, were purposely sent to their deaths in battle. “Our problems have been constantly ignored, but we won’t let our men be forgotten,” said Maria Andreyeva, the wife of a mobilized soldier and one of the few members of the movement willing to go public.

White scarf protester with her toddler places a carnation at the Unknown Soldier’s memorial on January 16 on behalf on of missing loved ones., Moscow Times.

The “white scarves” leaders tread carefully and, thus far, have not been subjected to the arrests and abuse that most anti-Putin activists incur. There has been some intimidation, and bans against certain protests, but violent repression is taboo. This is why the movement – online and off – continues and grows. Russian political analyst Dmitry Oreshkin believes this relatives’ movement is “a serious symptom of growing problems” in the country. And it is why authorities cautiously handle the situation because “the consequences [of action] could be unpredictable.”

These women spread concern. A Russian investigative website reported recently that a letter signed by 100 family members of soldiers stationed in Ukraine demanded an end to Putin’s “meat assaults” against Ukraine’s military. Another reporter wrote that an entire platoon just deserted in Crimea and is being hunted.

True or false, underground stories spread like COVID across Russia and the quiet protest by women has even garnered the attention of the esteemed Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington. It recently commented that the “angry relatives” are Putin’s biggest concern. “Putin’s presidential campaign will reportedly not focus on the war in Ukraine, and the Kremlin likely considers the relatives of mobilized personnel to be a social group that may pose one of the greatest threats to his campaign.”

Then there are the eggs and price of groceries. Police recently arrested a member of the Uzbek diaspora for “inciting hatred” with an online meme that spoofed both the country’s economic inflation and the military mobilization. He faces a jail sentence for this post and caption in Russian: “Screw you and your eggs! Bring back the roosters from the front.”

Last month, Putin publicly apologized for the soaring cost of eggs. But discontent grows, according to recent polls conducted by non-governmental, independent organizations. Support for Putin’s war hits rock bottom, according to Euronews. In October, Russian pollster, the Chronicle, said support for the invasion had halved in two years.

Read Also: No bail for kidnappers under my watch, Wike declares

It added that 40 percent of Russians favor the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine without war aims being achieved and that only 33 percent were against exiting from the war, down from 47 percent one year ago. Another poll found that 80 percent of Russians are worried about their financial well-being, a figure that’s 30 percent higher than recorded in May. Such anxiety is worrisome in any election, rigged or otherwise, but in combination with Putin’s quagmire in Ukraine is now reportedly unsettling Putin’s “siloviki” or the intelligence and security inner circle.

Journalists say oligarch “clans” openly feud and discredit one another to shift blame as well as to secure more power for themselves after the election and war. Putin has always encouraged infighting to retain power. This tactic was demonstrated last year when a raucous rivalry between his military brass and the late oligarch and mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin surfaced. The clash resulted in a violent but quick mutiny by Prigozhin; a climb down then a love-in with Putin, and finally his assassination weeks later.

The reality is that the election is a foregone conclusion and Russia’s 143 million people are prisoners in a gigantic gulag with 10 timezones. Heroic political foe Alexey Navalny still survives and says that Russia will “collapse and crumble”. But his recent tweet illustrates his personal plight in captivity after being recently transferred during the election to a jail near the Arctic Circle.

Putin keeps Navalny alive, and lets him communicate to the outside world, because he serves a purpose. Navalny’s increasingly gaunt appearances convey the message: Putin’s power is intractable and the consequences of anyone who opposes him are dire. Navalny recently resurfaced at a court hearing at his new hideous prison, and deployed the same dark humor and sarcasm that all Russians use to cope. He entered the court smiling and told the judge that he wanted the court to know that he missed the guards from his last prison, which caused the judge to laugh. Then he described his new conditions. “At this temperature, you can walk for more than half an hour, but only if you have time to grow a new nose, ears, and fingers.” Then he joked, tragically, that he hoped to figure out what court would accept a lawsuit from him so that he could change the weather.

Sanusi’s intervention over the move to relocate a few departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)to Lagos came at a time some elites from the North chose to jettison sound reasoning. Abuja, he said, is a federal capital not a northern issue. What matters is that the decision must be principled and once this condition is satisfied, ethnic and religious bigots can shout all they want.

It is not only the CBN plan that has exposed these elites; they have also been exposed by the decision to move the headquarters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from Abuja to Lagos and their hullabaloo over the choice of a Southerner, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Wike is the first Southerner in decades to get the position and the likes of Sheik Ahmad Gumi found it sacrilegious.

These guys have over the years acted as if the FCT Minister post is their birthright. To further their campaigns, they have resorted to reading senseless meanings into every action of the Southern minister. Because of their parochial interest, there have been unnecessary backlash following the demolition of shanties and the chasing away of marauding Keke drivers from the capital city. Some even believe that the recent kidnappings in the FCT is all part of the game. It seems the tactic is to distract Wike from doing the job which he accepted and is willing to do with patriotic verve and unwavering commitment for which President Bola Tinubu has given him the needed support. Wike has taken decisions that have endeared him to the president, who has in turn supported him in many ways than one, such as the exception of the FCT from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), and speedy approvals to enable him purchase security equipment in the face of the recent security crisis. What is left is for Nigerians, especially our brothers from the North to give him a chance to restore the lost glory of Abuja, just the way he did in Rivers State.

Justice Akinola Aguda, who led the committee that chose Abuja as a centralised capital for Nigeria, must be turning in his grave now that some elites from the North, including the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and Senator Ali Ndume, are making it look as if Abuja is for the North, rather than a melting pot for Nigeria that it was planned to be.

For the intervention of Sanusi, one would have thought that the North was up in arms against the South but the ex-CBN governor has shown us that these guys are simply playing politics and he has advised that politics should never be allowed to take over sound judgment.

The CBN’s explanation of its decision is clear enough and should never have generated any hubris. The bank said the action plan was to optimise the Bank’s other premises.

Five of the institutions 17 departments, specifically Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection Department, Payment System Management Department and Financial Policy Regulations Department, are expected to move to Lagos.

A former Deputy Governor of the bank, Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, in a post on X, explained that the CBN’s Lagos office was inaugurated 12 years ago but had been underutilised and added that the decision was logical because the affected departments primarily oversee market entities in Lagos. This is also Sanusi’s position.

The ex-CBN boss said: “The credit for the design and the contract for the new Lagos building goes to Charles Soludo. But it is true that I did the formal foundation laying ceremony when JB brought the building to ground level, and I opened the building and used it before I left the CBN… Moving certain functions to the Lagos office ( which is bigger than the Abuja head office) is an eminently sensible move.

“In my mind what I would have done was to move FSS and most of Operations to Lagos such that the two Deputy Governors would be largely operating out of Lagos or, even if they were more in Abuja , the bulk of their operational staff would be in Lagos.

Read Also: Fresh crisis looms in Rivers as Assembly overrides Fubara’s assent on four bills

Economic policy, Corporate services and all the departments reporting to the Governor directly such as Strategy, Audit, Risk management, Governors’ office etc would remain in Abuja. It makes eminent strategic sense. And I would have done this if I had stayed.”

Sanusi said  “all this noise is absolutely unnecessary” and added that “moving staff to the Lagos office to streamline operations and make them more effective and reduce cost is a normal prerogative of management”.

Sanusi gave an interesting insight into the brouhaha. According to him, many CBN employees are children of politically-exposed persons and “their Abuja life and businesses are more important than the CBN work”.

The CBN, he said, is just an address for them and they would rather leave the CBN than forfeit their spoilt Abuja life. He urged the CBN to implement the decision to get rid of those elements because “they are dangerous for the bank’s future”.

In the case of the FAAN, Obiageli Orah, its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, said: “Those affected by the decision to move the headquarters to Abuja have since returned to Lagos as there is no office space for them in Abuja. It was ill-advised in the first place to move the headquarters to Abuja when there was no single FAAN building in Abuja to accommodate all of them at once.”

She added that retaining the status quo would mean abandoning “the old FAAN building in Lagos to rot away and to use its scarce resources to rent an office space in Abuja for millions of naira of public money when in actual fact more than sixty percent of its activities are in Lagos given the huge passenger volume of the Lagos airports. The stakeholders and the Minister decided against that and to save the country from this waste.”

In all of these chaos, all Nigerians need to fight for Abuja as our FCT. The city doesn’t belong to the North alone contrary to what the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. T. A. Muhammad-Baba, said that the decisions were to under-develop the North. It is wrong to say the decisions don’t fit into any disturbing pattern of antagonistic actions against the interests of the North.

Nigerians must insist that the decision to have Abuja as FCT is for Nigeria and not for the North and Abuja is for us all. So, interpreting these actions as against the North is not good for our country. As right-thinking Nigerians like Sanusi have noted, we must all insist Abuja is the capital of Nigeria and not the North. It belongs to us all and moving departments or agencies for administrative convenience should not be interpreted as anti-North. The time to end this curious sense of ownership is now.

Pathetic tales of helpless victims as Plateau killings rear head again

The world woke up on Wednesday to the news of yet another massacre in the crisis-ridden Plateau State as fresh killings erupted in Kwahaslalek village, Mangu Local Government Area, leaving no fewer than 30 people dead.

The victims, mostly women and children, were said to have sought refuge in the house of a community leader in the area following an unrest that had occurred in Mangu town the previous day only for gunmen to surround the house and kill all of them.

A pathetic footage from the mayhem is that of a woman fleeing for safety after escaping from a hospital that was set ablaze 24 hours after she was delivered of a baby via Caesarian Section.

And as killings and destruction of property continued, another woman identified as Zainab was delivered of a baby boy in the open because she could not go to the hospital and there was no one available to assist her.

The hapless woman recalled how she suddenly fell into labour following the deafening sounds of gunshots and the sights of people falling dead from bullet wounds.

Overcome by shock, the 25-year-old mother of two said she felt her baby slip out of her while she stood in the open wondering the next step to take.

Zainab said: “I knelt down when I noticed that the baby was already coming out. Everyone fled for their lives and it was only a neighbor who stopped to help me.

“There was no medical assistance of any kind, sterilized equipment or conducive atmosphere.”

At the time she spoke on Wednesday, the mother of two said neither the new baby nor herself had had a bath yet as there was no way she could get the hot water needed for that purpose. She also had no idea where her other children were in the midst of the mayhem.

“As for my other children, I don’t know where they are, and I also don’t know where my husband is,” she said.

Also numbered among the victims of the latest carnage is a family of five, comprising a man, his three children and granddaughter.

The man identified simply as David, his son Emmanuel, daughter Beatrice and two others whose names were yet to be ascertained at press time were said to have been burnt in their house in Sabon Kasuwa area of Kwagas Layir in Mangu town.

One of the deceased girls was said to be his granddaughter, who until her death was an SS1 student. The deceased breadwinner was said to be a native of Langtang North working in Mangu Local Government Area.

A resident of Kwagas Layir, Mrs Solome Shekar, whose house was completely razed, told our correspondent that she was yet to see her son who she left in the housewhile she evacuated her sick husband to another village upon learning about rumours of an impending attack.

Shekar said: “When we heard rumours and gunshots on Tuesday, I had to evacuate my husband who was very sick to another village while I left my son to take care of the house. On Wednesday the attackers went and burnt our house, and as I am talking to you, I am yet to see my son.”

She confirmed the burning of a family of five inside their house in Sabon Kasuwa area of Kwagas Layir. She also said that as at Wednesday afternoon, many houses were still up in flames in different parts of Mangu.

The rampaging gunmen were alleged to have defied the curfew imposed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to attack Kwagas Layir, Sabon Kasuwa and the surrounding communities where they killed no fewer than 30 persons and also burnt some property.

    One killings too many

Wednesday’s outbreak of ethno-religious violence was another in the long list of such evil occurrences in the state over the years. On the eve of the last Christmas, no fewer than 200 people were killed in 17 communities in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi and Mangu LGAs of the state while more than 20,000 inhabitants were displaced. Many houses were also destroyed in the attacks that also left thousands of residents displaced.

The situation has left many wondering the reason for the renewed killings.

A resident of Mangu, Rev. Micha Maren, told The Nation that it is the continuation of the violence that started in April 2023.

Maren said: “It is difficult to tell the reason for the renewed killings. It is the continuation of the violence that started in April 2023.

“We can only trace the cause back to that period. Any other killing after the one of April 2023 is a revenge for previous killings.”

While the cause of the renewed bloodshed remains a matter of conjecture, it is obvious that the killings have ethnic and religious colourations.

Press statements from two socio-cultural organisations, namely the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), seem to have given clearer indications that the warring factions are Fulani and Mwaghavul ethnic nationalities.

Reactions from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) also portrayed religious dimensions to the violence.

“It is now an ethno-religious war between the Fulani and the Mwaghavul tribes,” said a Plateau State Government official who pleaded anonymity.

The Special Adviser on Security to Mutfwang, Gakji Shipi, had told our correspondent that the problem was sparked off by an altercation between a local and a Fulani herder over right of way.

The herdsman was said to have herded his cows across Mangu Road when the local who rode on a motorcycle challenged him. The altercation was said to have snowballed into a free-for-all as sympathisers of both parties joined the fray.

Earlier on Tuesday, TruthNigeria, a non-governmental organization, had raised fears of possible attacks in the area, saying that it had received credible information indicating that a convoy of armed gunmen originating from Marit, Exland, Josho, Mahanga, Mushere and Ruku, riding on motorbikes with three persons on each, was on its way to Mangu and neighbouring villages in Bokkos Local Government Area.

The security alert had said: “All residents and security personnel are urged to exercise heightened vigilance and take immediate precautions.

“Stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

“Security forces are actively responding to the situation, but public cooperation is essential for a swift and effective response.”

Meanwhile, the General Overseers of EBOMI, Prophet Isa El-Buba, condemned the setting up of a militia by the Miyetti Allah in Nasarawa State, describing it as a dangerous trend, which he said would spell doom for the country.

He stressed that the setting up of the militia in Nasarawa was a confirmation that the state is the hub of the Fulani militia in the country.

He said: “I take exception to, and reject the lame, obnoxious, insanely hypocritical and ill-intentioned purported creation of a Nomad Vigilante Group in Nasarawa State by Bello Bodejo’s Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore (MAKH).

“More insulting to Nigerians’ psyche and the memory of thousands gruesomely killed and displaced by Fulani militia is the group’s purported joke to invite known terrorist, Turji, and other Fulani militia leaders to work in the vigilante group.

“The sheer hypocrisy is crystal clear in the inter-convertibility of how Miyetti Allah’s tribesmen in the mold of Fulani militias who have been terrorising, killing and maiming Nigerians in most parts of the country, will now be the same people to quickly resort to creating a nomad vigilante group.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this is a Greek gift to our security architecture! And we are calling on relevant authorities to rein in and clamp down on Miyetti Allah.

“This is sacrosanct to abort an underhanded and systematic plan to overrun especially Northcentral Nigeria with, and by Fulani militias’ group seeking to disguise as nomadic vigilante and consolidate Nasarawa State as a harbouring ground and operational foothold given the state’s borders with Plateau, Benue, Kaduna and the FCT where there are prevailing security challenges.”

The prophet decried the effects of escalating insecurity in Nigeria, especially on the agricultural sector, saying that “Data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, foreign investments in the agricultural sector in the third quarter of 2015 was $95.10 million, in Quarter 3 of 2023, it was at an all-time low $4.64 million, representing a 95% decline.

“What chased the investments? Rising insecurity within the same period. Like we know, this Agricultural sector investment decline carries a corresponding decline of some 60% in food production.

“The direct impact of this on the average Nigerian is the unbearable high surge in food prices, which economist measured to have quickened to be at an all high 33.93% food inflation rate. Already, the nation’s headline inflation has accelerated to 28.95% as at today.”

He called on the President to tackle insecurity headlong.

Also the Ja’amatu Nasril Islam (JNI) Plateau State chapter has condemned in totality the resurgence of violence in Mangu town of the state.

JNI, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Dr. Salim Musa Umar, expressed dismay that the crisis started in the morning of Tuesday, 23rd January, 2024, from the outskirts of Mangu town, and spread into the town later in the day.

“This, unfortunately, has degenerated into a seemingly ethno-religious crisis where places of worship were torched.

“Reports from Mangu town this morning is not encouraging as places of worship and faith-based schools were torched and demolished while the killing continues again.

“Residents are decrying the negative role of the state government security outfit codenamed ‘Operation Rainbow’, accusing them of glaring partisanship.

“We call on the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in securing the lives and properties of the inhabitants of Mangu and other flash points.

“All concerned should also do everything possible to prevent any possible escalation.”

The director of Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Comrade Steve Aluko, said: “There is no civil liberty in Plateau State anymore due to the activities of gunmen across the local governments.

“There are gun-wielding men in the bushes and forests, and government appeared handicapped on how to rid the bushes and forests of these gunmen called bandits or whatever name they are called.

“Secondly, ethnic militancy is growing in every community across the country. That also is because government has failed in its primary responsibility to protect citizens, hence ethnic militia are building up everywhere to defend themselves.

“This is dangerous and we must end it now.

“The federal government is the only one with necessary equipment to end the activities of bandits in this country. It is only the federal government that has the instruments of justice system to deal with criminals behind the killings across the country and enforce equity and fairness.

“It is only the federal government that has the power and resources to return people to their ancestral lands after their displacement by the gunmen.

“Enough of government creating camps for displaced citizens everywhere. It is only the federal government that has all the instruments of government to enforce law and order, and until the federal government does that, we will continue to witness these unfortunate situations.

“It is sad that since 2001, a lot of families were displaced from their ancestral lands and government has done nothing to return them, and you expect a peaceful society.

“The same federal government has identified these killers as foreign aggressors or foreign mercenaries, yet the same government did not know how to deal with the external aggressors.

“You would realise that if the aggressors become the victims, these killings will stop automatically, but it all appear the federal government has been romancing them.

  • How rural electricity is transforming Oyo community’s economy

How rural electricity is transforming Oyo community’s economy

    • Adelabu pledges expansion

Economic activities in Adafila, a rural community in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, are being transformed with the provision of stable and affordable electricity by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

It is an amenity that residents of the community had not enjoyed in 100 years of existence.

A table water factory owner, salon operators, welders and oil marketers, among others, are operating with ease and laughing all the way to the bank, thanks to stable electricity supply powered by a 90 Kilowatt solar system built by the REA in partnership with a private company.

Dwellers of the community were full of praises for the Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu and REA Managing Director Engr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad when both visited the solar power station in the community as part of their national facility tour, last week.

Built by Havenhill Synergy Ltd. in partnership with the REA, the solar-powered electricity is powering about 1,000 houses, shops and factories in the community on 24-hour basis. It is also affordable for residents of the sleepy community.

Speaking on the 90 KW power station, the company’s Head of Projects, Oluwaseun Abraham, said the project was designed as a power solution for the entire community.

He revealed that there were more than 1,300 connections in Adafila, which had remained stable for over one year.

Addressing reporters after inspecting the project, Adelabu expressed satisfaction and promised to enlarge the facility in accordance with increased demand due to increasing economic activities in the community.

The minister assured the residents of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving electricity supply for Nigerians to enhance comfort and wealth creation.

According to him, the projects, 27 of which are cited across Oyo State, signified that not only residents of urban centres are entitled to stable power supply but also rural dwellers, who produce food for all Nigerians.

In his address, the REA boss said: “Adafila is a vibrant community, and like many vibrant unserved and underseved communities across the nation, energy poverty remains a stumbling block to socio-economic growth.

“We have witnessed over and over again the transformative change that comes with energy access infrastructure in off-grid communities, and we celebrate with the people of Adafila for the successful completion of this 90KwP solar hybrid mini-grid.

“With much confidence, I can report back that the Federal Ministry of Power, through the Honourable Minister, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has a mandate to accelerate the process of alleviation of energy poverty in line with the vision of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“The Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President is an agenda that has its roots in the realization of people-focused, data-driven interventions for national development.

“This is why we are witnessing the growth of strategic partnerships across all 36 states after the passage of the 2023 Electricity Act by His Excellency the President.

“Over the years, we have optimised the NEP to strengthen the off-grid space while deploying over 100 mini-grids and powering over five million Nigerians through this singular programme.

“With the successful implementation of the programme, we are confident in the model and positioned for an even wider impact across the nation.

Read Also: No bail for kidnappers under my watch, Wike declares

“Our focus remains the same, with a renewed sense of purpose: to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy solutions for productive use, socio-economic growth, and transformative change in unserved and underserved areas.

“In line with the agenda of the Federal Ministry of Power, we must continue to work collaboratively to ensure the sustainability of these projects in a way that translates to long-term impact.

“We, therefore, use this opportunity to call on the good people of Adafila to now see themselves as co-partners in the business of nation-building.

“Together, we can keep this facility safe and secure. Together, we can ensure the optimal usage of this facility so every man and woman in Adafila feels the impact.”

The table water factory owner, Alhaji Fatai Balelayo, with the product name Balelayo Table Water, told The Nation that his factory, which is now 100 per cent powered with the solar electricity, produces between 1,500 and 2,000 bags per day.

He said: “The cost is 10 times cheaper than the time we were using generator. It is stable and reliable. I have used the solar power for one year. Because of that, we have not increased our cost price.

“Before, we used 40 litres of petrol to produce overnight. But now, a N5,000 card will last us for all-night production.

“Other suppliers used to come from Ogbomoso but they have stopped since we started using solar power, which has helped us produce on a larger scale.

“It powers our borehole, air conditioners, fans and other equipment.”

Leaders of the community commended the Federal Government for the project, highlighting its many benefits to their well-being.

  • Furore over demolition of structures in Enugu

Furore over demolition of structures in Enugu

Bulldozers were on the roll in the Centenary City layout of Enugu metropolis penultimate Friday as the state government began to demonstrate its resolve to ensure zero tolerance for insecurity and all unapproved structures and properties within the state capital.

Some task force officials from the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) stormed the estate and began a demolition exercise, leading to the destruction of several illegal buildings, including some already converted to criminals’ den.

This was said to be against the backdrop of the flagrant and alarming disobedience of building regulations in the state.

Tears, lamentations as victims seek Governor Mbah’s intervention

Residents whose buildings were affected in the demolitions pleaded for the intervention of Governor Peter Mbah. They insisted that the land genuinely belonged to them, adding that they had genuine documents from the state government to back up their claims.

One of them was the owner of Censers Church Inc. Worldwide, Rev. Ugochukwu Anike, who expressed sadness over the demolition of his mighty church building.

He said: “I am sad and devastated. This is a sad day in the history of our church. Yesterday, 19th January, 2024, I got information that bulldozers were entering this place and that they were doing some demolitions.

“When I came, people said our street was not part of it. And truly a lot of buildings were standing here.

“But they entered the street and entered my own church specifically.

“This should not be done to anyone. The same documents other buildings have are what I have. I have the documentation of this property. Why was I discriminately targeted?”

He recalled that Mbah, during his electioneering campaigns, had come to the church.

“I gave you the platform of the church that has thousands of people in it to address the church because you considered us important.

“I don’t believe you have a hand in this.

“Someone needs to explain to me why the church was specifically targeted while other buildings were standing.

“It’s not been up to one year that you took office and you are starting with demolitions.

“You are harping on investment. How can we invest in Enugu State when the ones already invested by citizens are not secure?

“No notice was served here but discriminately demolished because other buildings are standing here,” he said.

Another owner and content creator, popularly known on social media as Untouchable Comedies, had to make a viral video on Saturday alleging that the Enugu Government demolished over 200 buildings in Centenary City.

In the said video, he was seen appealing to Governor Peter Mbah to come to their aid and prevent further demolition of people’s investments.

He also alleged that he bought the land while the necessary documents were given to him, wondering why his building would be marked for demolition.

“They asked us to come back home, and this is what they are doing to us. This is my only building in Enugu, and ECTDA marked it for demolition. They should tell us what to pay instead of demolishing our houses,” Unstoppable Comedies had said in the video.

He would however apologise to the governor on Sunday for overreacting, saying he was overtaken by emotion.

    Government justifies action

While the demolition of structures has drawn tears and lamentation, the chairman of the ECTDA, Mr. Uche Anya, justified the action, describing the buildings demolished as criminals’ hideouts and illegal development without titles and approval from the Enugu State Government.

Anya, who conducted newsmen around the demolished structures deep in the forest of the Centenary City located at Obeagu/Amechi Akwunanaw in Enugu South LGA, insisted that the agency would not succumb to blackmail, adding that the owners were given notices to remove the illegal structures.

He added that in the course of the demolition, the agency burst into kidnappers in a building at the isolated part of the estate.

Anya said kidnappers were arrested from the building while a lot of guns, 24 mobile phones, eight CCTV cameras with SIM cards were recovered from them and handed over to the police.

“It is apposite to state that the action of the ECTDA in Centenary City is Rule of Law at work.

“The ECTDA law prohibits carrying out any development or municipal service within the Capital Territory without the written approval of the Authority.

“For the avoidance of doubts, Section 13 (1) of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority Law, 2009 provides: ‘Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law, as from the commencement of this Law, no person or body shall carry out any development or municipal service within the Capital Territory, unless such development or municipal service has been approved in writing by the Authority.’

“However, whereas the current ECTDA leadership is determined to stop unauthorised developments and carry on with the urban master plan restoration and renewal process, including those initiated by successive administrations, we took the initiative to mark the affected properties in October 2023, issuing notices that should accord the developers a window to regularise their titles/properties, if any.

“For emphasis, even though the notices had since expired, no unapproved but completed or occupied building was demolished during the exercise by ECTDA. We are still calling on the developers to do the right thing.

“Meanwhile, it is to be made clear that the ECTDA operation of Friday, January 19, was based on an intelligence report about an illegal development/property that served as kidnappers’ den at the Centenary City.

“In the course of our due diligence, we also found out that the property, like many others at Centenary City, had no title or approval from the appropriate authorities.

“Although the building was not fully completed, the criminals had already mounted sophisticated surveillance equipment such as CCTV cameras, PTZ cameras, in addition to about two dozens of mobile phones denoting the dangerous level of sophistication.

“As some of the videos already in public domain clearly show, we made some chilling discoveries on storming the property with security operatives, including several guns and suspected kidnappers, whom the security agents were able to apprehend,” the ECTDA chairman said.

Also speaking, the Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aka Eze Aka, responded to a trending video where allegations of indiscriminate demolitions were made.

Read Also: Fresh crisis looms in Rivers as Assembly overrides Fubara’s assent on four bills

He said: “What we saw in the trending video today was an attempt by the originators to de-market Enugu State as an investment destination for real estate development. But in reality, the operation by ECTDA and the security agencies was a testament that government is resolved to rid the state of criminal elements and protect property rights and investments in the state.

“In this instance, you are all aware of the distance we travelled from the city to get to this place. The culprits did not only erect the structures without any title and approval, they got inside this place pretending to be a block industry, whereas as you can see, they were into nefarious activities.”

On the allegations made by a content creator on the social media, the Commissioner said: “When the person who was on the video began to talk about trying to destroy his house and so on, it is important to state that not one single building that has been marked for demolition was touched because we also have human feelings to allow these houses for them to be regularised.

“They just went about to recycle old videos where some properties were destroyed by past administrations.

“It is also funny that the young man has been brandishing a mere Deed, which cannot be an approval to build.”

    Government’s action illegal –

    Rights group

Meanwhile, a rights group, Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), has described as unlawful the demolitions by the Enugu State Government. The group accused the state government of failing to understand the provisions of the law on the acquisition of land for public purposes.

In a statement titled: “Centenary City crises and unlawful demolition; failure of successive governments to understand the provisions of The Land Use Act on acquisition of land for public purposes”, the president, Olu Omotayo, faulted the process through which the state acquired the said land.

While quoting a report in a national daily, Omotayo recalled that former Governor Jim Nwobodo initiated the process for acquisition of the land from Amaechi people when he was governor for the purpose of building a university for the state.

“When Governor Chimaroke Nnamani was governor, he decided to establish the university in Agbani, thereby rendering the land fallow. The position of the law is that the land reverts back to the original owners once it is not used for public purpose.

“So, it is wrong for successive governors in the state to claim that they ceded the land to private developers. It is unlawful and illegal and an act of executive lawlessness and rascality, because the land can only be used for public purposes for the general benefit of the citizens of the state.

“The Court of Appeal In Odusote V. Seriki held as follows: “The acquisition must be for bona fide public purpose. It is suggested that for a particular purpose to qualify as public purpose or public interest, it must not be vague and the way it benefits the public at large must be capable of proof.

“The test is whether or not the purpose is meant to benefit the public and not just to aid the commercial transaction of a company or a group of people for their own selfish or financial purposes,” he said.

The group continued: “We submit that the Hallmark of democracy is the respect for the Rule of law and fundamental rights of the citizens. Once government acquired land for public purpose pursuant to the provisions of the Land Use Act, and the land is not used for the specified public purpose, it should revert back to the original owners.

“The government cannot give it to a private person or private enterprise or developer. The courts in this regard have consistently maintained that the government cannot rob Peter to pay Paul”.
