DECEMBERISSAVYBE: Firstbank sponsors ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again Stage Play’

First Bank of Nigeria Limited proudly sponsored a remarkable stage play titled ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again: A Biting Satire.’ This captivating performance was masterfully directed by the acclaimed Joseph Edgar, widely recognized as The Duke of Somolu. The play received high praise for its creative ingenuity and sharp satirical brilliance, effectively delivering a meaningful message to its audience.

The much-anticipated performance took place on December 23, 2023, at the prestigious Shell Hall, MUSON Centre in Lagos. This staging was an integral part of the vibrant activities associated with the 2024 edition of FirstBank’s annual campaign, ‘DecemberIssaVybe,’ which aims to support and promote the thriving arts and entertainment sector in Nigeria.

Written and produced by the versatile Joseph Edgar, who is also a distinguished playwright and journalist, ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ is a profound satire that conveys a compelling message through clever satirical elements and well-crafted characters. Edgar describes the play as a compilation of his earlier writings that appeared in ThisDay newspaper, along with his personal reflections shared on various platforms, including WhatsApp.

This particular production marked the fourth outing of the play, with previous adaptations being celebrated and well-received. One standout performance featured the talented actress Chantal, who humorously chastised Edgar in a memorable scene, referring to him as a “self-centred Ibibio man,” eliciting laughter from the audience. Another crowd favourite was a scene set in a white garment church, directed by the iconic Segun Adefila. This lively depiction showcased the vibrant energy and joyful movements of the beautiful women attending such congregations, further engaging the audience with their energetic performances. Additionally, the play prominently featured a scene centered around the controversial journalist and TV host Rufai Oseni, thoughtfully reflecting current societal debates and media dynamics.

A significant portion of the production was dedicated to a heartfelt tribute to the late Herbert Wigwe, a revered banker and former chairman of Access Holdings, known for his bold business strategies and calculated risk-taking. Edgar, drawing from his personal experiences with Wigwe, portrayed the late banker as an inspiring figure who achieved prominence through sheer determination and hard work. The narrative expressed a profound sense of loss felt by many following Wigwe’s untimely passing, resonating deeply with the audience.

The storyline of ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ is a vibrant and dynamic fusion of dance, music, traditional aesthetics, and visual spectacle, seamlessly blending comedic and tragic elements. In addition to honoring Herbert Wigwe, Edgar also paid homage to other notable figures, such as Mrs. Umo Eno, the recently deceased First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, and the iconic singer Onyeka Onwenu, showcasing the play’s deep connections to the fabric of Nigerian society.

The themes explored within the play span a broad spectrum of human experience, including pain, love, joy, relationships, and the myriad challenges faced by society. It poignantly reflects the complexities of Nigerian life and culture, utilizing elements from Edgar’s finest writings to resonate with the audience on multiple levels. Furthermore, the production served as a platform to commemorate several Nigerians who have recently passed away, intertwining personal narratives with collective grief and memory, thus adding another layer of depth to the performance.

Crafted with a rich, emotional plot, ‘Our Duke Has Gone Mad Again’ is an exhilarating theatrical spectacle that effortlessly integrates various aspects of Nigerian culture, music, folklore, and languages. While rooted in satire, the core narrative resonates with contemporary societal realities, making the production both entertaining and deeply thought-provoking.

Olayinka Ijabiyi, the Acting Group Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, expressed the bank’s unwavering commitment to providing a memorable December experience for all generations. He remarked, “FirstBank is dedicated to facilitating unforgettable homecoming experiences this December for gatherings such as weddings, family reunions, and festive celebrations. Our collaboration with the Duke of Somolu on this play signifies our dedication to promoting the creative industry through the arts and stage plays, aligning perfectly with our vision as an organization that cherishes Nigeria’s artistic landscape.” Ijabiyi further highlighted FirstBank’s rich 130-year legacy of supporting the arts through its First@arts initiative and encouraged Nigerians to embrace the diverse entertainment offerings presented throughout the DecemberIssaVybe campaign. • Kpere-Daibo’s children mark three-in-one showpiece events

Kpere-Daibo’s children mark three-in-one showpiece events

It was a three-in-one celebration in the home of Elder Sunday Kpere–Diabo who turned 90.

His wedding anniversary turned the pages at 60 and his wife became an octogenarian at 80.

The children rolled out the red carpet to mark the milestones, which became a showpiece in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Kpere-Daibo described as a man of integrity and a visionary leader started his banking career with Barclays Bank in Sapele in the then Midwest Region before it became Union Bank.

The celebration, which took place at the Uyi Grand International Event Centre, attracted personalities including the Arch-Bishop of the Church of God  Mission International, Bishop Margaret Benson Idahosa.

Arch-Bishop Idahosa, who showered encomium on the celebrators, said their marriage had been an example to marriages and believers just as she thanked God for preserving their lives.

Idahosa said: “I don’t really have much to say but the life of the Daibos speaks for them. I have always told them that their lives have been an example to believers, marriages and an example to society. I want to thank God for their lives, what you say is what you do and above all since Christ found you, you have never looked back and I want to thank God for that.

“I just pray that God will keep you and extend your lives for all that you mean to the believers, don’t be ready to go yet because there is still more work to be done, your prayers, thoughts alone will mean a lot to them, thank God for 90 years. We are today celebrating you; to celebrate life, there are a lot of children when their parents are alive, they cannot give them turkey or goat to celebrate but when they are gone you begin to see cows, but today, we are celebrating lives in abundance.”

The celebrators admonished young couples to imbibe the virtues of tolerance, patience and abide by God’s principles to survive the turbulence of challenges.

Elder Kpere-Daibo said: “Today, people are so much in a hurry. They want everything to happen in a rush but during our era there was no time to rush. Imagine me having to wait for my wife for seven years and you know that was a long time searching because I didn’t want to go through the back doors. Young couples must learn to be patient.”

Daughter of the couple Mrs Jolomi Abirhir, who described the celebration as ‘awesome’, said their parents had built a legacy worthy of emulation. She added that the celebration was to show them that the children love them.

She said: “Today, my mother turned 80 and my daddy is 90. They are 60 years in marriage and it called for an awesome celebration.  We are happy that they are both alive, well and strong. They have left a wonderful legacy, my mother runs an NGO, and she has impacted many lives all over Nigeria and beyond. For us the children,  it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate them while they are still alive, so we are very happy and grateful to God for this opportunity.”

Also, the son in-law,  Eta Abirhir, said it was an honour to be married to one of the Daibos, adding that it was better to celebrate people when they are alive.

“I am very grateful to be part of this family. I joined this family through marriage in 2005, I knew I made the right decision, they accepted me and it’s been bliss all the way. My father-in-law is energetic and am grateful to God for giving him the strength and same to mummy.

“There is no place in the world where mummy will go and visit that people will not know about her. She has impacted people’s lives far and beyond and am really grateful that God has kept them and they are celebrating 60 years in marriage and that is mind blowing. I believe in celebrating people while they are alive and thank God this is happening.”

  • Bashir Adewale Adeniyi: Adeptly navigating customs complexities with commitment, proficiency

Bashir Adewale Adeniyi: Adeptly navigating customs complexities with commitment, proficiency

Whether admired or criticized, Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, is unwavering in his mission to transform the Nigeria Customs Service. His primary focus is to safeguard the nation’s borders against economic sabotage while boosting revenue and facilitating seamless trade relations between importers and exporters, ultimately fostering economic growth and stability for Nigeria.

Since his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration last year, Bashir has utilized his exceptional acumen and strategic insight to elevate this crucial law enforcement agency. Many initially doubted his ability to succeed, but he is decisively silencing his critics with impressive outcomes that have solidified the customs agency as one of the largest revenue-generating bodies in the country, channelling trillions of Naira into government coffers annually and enhancing trade facilitation.

Adeniyi, often dubbed the “new sheriff in town,” is unyielding in his approach, having made it clear to those who previously exploited systemic weaknesses that their days of advantage are numbered. A natural team player, he leads not from behind a desk but from the forefront, diligently ensuring that every loophole is sealed. Those who have profited at the country’s expense feel the consequences, as Adeniyi pursues them relentlessly.

He believes that for the customs service to function optimally, it must not only focus on revenue generation but also strive to portray Nigeria positively on the global stage. To that end, he has streamlined the cargo release and evaluation processes through cutting-edge technology, significantly reducing the bureaucratic red tape that plagued the service.

While his reforms have drawn ire from some quarters, he remains undeterred. Adeniyi has equipped all commands and zones, preparing them to combat both internal and external corruption. Smugglers, in particular, now view him as a formidable obstacle.

In a resolute effort to protect Nigeria’s agricultural sector, Adeniyi has strategically assigned capable personnel to the nation’s borders, issuing a stringent directive that anyone attempting to undermine the Nigerian economy is seen as an enemy and will face no leniency. This has resulted in tighter border security and has enabled local producers to flourish, attracting increased investment in vital sectors, especially agriculture.

Internally, CGC Adewale is effecting a groundbreaking reform of the customs workforce by emphasizing professionalism and ethical standards. He has initiated extensive training programs focused on customs law, risk assessment, and technology, aiming to cultivate a skilled workforce equipped to tackle contemporary customs challenges.

His unwavering stance against corruption, coupled with a strong emphasis on accountability, seeks to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Customs Service. By fostering a culture steeped in ethics, CGC Adewale aspires to elevate the agency into one that commands respect for its integrity and fairness.

Adeniyi also recognizes the significance of collaboration; thus, he actively partners with other agencies to forge a synergistic relationship, sharing intelligence that effectively combats smuggling and enhances the interception of illegal goods. The agency has recently reported seizures worth billions while intercepting arms and ammunition, marking a significant turn in fortunes as he strives to solidify the Customs’ reputation as a reputable agency, reversing the negative narrative that has long surrounded it.

Under his stewardship, he has prioritized the welfare of staff, the development of women, and the motivation of officers, fostering a dedicated workforce eager to protect the nation from economic sabotage. Significant seizures from petroleum products to endangered species parts, such as pangolin scales, donkey skins, and elephant tusks, alongside smuggled vehicles, have underscored Adeniyi’s commitment to elevating the agency above others. The digitalization of key customs processes has made trade more efficient, decreasing unnecessary human interaction to minimize corruption.

Despite the considerable challenges faced, during Adeniyi’s tenure, Customs has remarkably generated an impressive N5,079,455,088,194.38, exceeding the 2024 target of N5 trillion. As part of ongoing reform measures, six beneficiaries of the Authorized Economic Operators (AEO) program have been selected, with an additional 21 requests processed under an advance ruling initiative designed to expedite customs decision-making on import and export cargoes before they arrive at the ports.

Adeniyi’s significant strides, alongside streamlined cargo alerts, have begun to reshuffle the customs landscape in Nigeria, introducing hope and renewed purpose to this vital service.

Beyond the realm of security, the collaborative efforts extend into vital economic initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This ambitious project aims to create a cohesive market across the continent, fostering seamless trade among African nations.

Adewale’s significant involvement in the development of AfCFTA-related policies highlights his unwavering commitment to transforming the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) into an agency that not only facilitates economic integration but also harmonizes customs standards across Africa.

This harmonization is crucial for streamlining trade flows and unlocking a plethora of economic opportunities. Despite facing fierce opposition and deliberate campaigns aimed at undermining his reputation, Adeniyi has remained resolute, undeterred by the negative tactics employed by his detractors.

He continues to focus on his responsibilities with diligence and integrity. While some have resorted to disparagement, Adeniyi has made sizable advancements toward realizing his ambitious vision of elevating the customs service to an esteemed position on a global scale.

This commitment to progress is exemplified through the ongoing Comptroller of Customs conference, aptly themed “Nigeria Customs Service: Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.” This conference, which had been previously halted for several years, has been revived since Adeniyi took the helm, offering the NCS a platform to engage in meaningful discussions.

It serves as an opportunity to reassess strategies, ensuring the agency remains afloat and true to its potential in enhancing trade facilitation while also safeguarding our local economy.

True to the adage that the reward for a job well done is more work, Adeniyi is prepared to meet the challenges head-on, ready to deliver exceptional results regardless of the circumstances. The Nigeria Customs Service has never experienced such a level of organization and efficiency since its inception, earning it recognition as one of the most structured agencies in Nigeria today. This achievement is a testament to Adeniyi’s dedication and commitment to promoting excellence and prosperity within the service.

  • Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s road to victory

    Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s road to victory

The political sojourn of Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa can be likened to that of the proverbial child born under the lucky star. His story resonates with many as a story that rejigs hope and consistency. When the road seemed rough for him while navigating the murky waters of politics fuelled by his detractors, he remained steadfast not allowing issues to go wrong with him and his erstwhile boss, the late Arakurin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

While as Deputy Governor, he was trampled and disrespected by some larger-than-life cabinet members who were in the good books of the then-governor. Instead of Aiyedatiwa to flare up, he was prayerful and remained calm playing his role as a deputy. When his boss was sick and flown to Germany for treatment, he was sidelined by some elements in the government who did not want him to shine like the star he was. But in the face of provocation, he remained resilient and unwavering. He was intimidated by many who felt he did not deserve what rightfully belonged to his office. While he called for meetings to coordinate the government when his boss was sick; many never answered him nor regarded him as they felt he was not in the best position to summon them so they looked away. While the House of Assembly tried to impeach him and also lay several allegations on him, he came out victorious and their impeachment plan never saw the light of the day.

After the death of his boss, he was sworn in as Governor and those who never took him seriously started lobbying him but to their chagrin, he moved on and immediately focused on governance getting the state back afloat after it was grounded by the sickness of his former boss.
