Cholera outbreak: NDDC deploys medical intervention in Rivers

    • Nine feared dead

Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has deployed drugs and medical personnel to mitigate cholera outbreak at Soku community in Akuku-Toru Local Government of Rivers State.

No fewer than nine persons have reportedly died, following outbreak of the disease in the community.

The intervention initiated by the state representative on the NDDC board, Tony Okocha, appears to be the first set of interventions the community has received so far since the outbreak of the disease.

A team of medical professionals left Port Harcourt on Sunday afternoon for Soku.

The cause of the outbreak may not be unconnected with drinking of unhygienic water.

Okocha deployed alongside the medical team, drugs and cartons of potable water (bottled water) for residents.

A statement by his media aide, Jacobs Happiness, said the gesture was in line with Okocha’s commitments to prioritise human capital development, among others, during his tenure.

Okocha promised to ensure that no resident suffers from any ailment.

NDDC, through Okocha, distributed relief materials worth hundreds millions of Naira to eight communities in Rivers State that were affected by flood last year.

IPOB urges EEDC to provide electricity or pull out of Southeast

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has condemned Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for its failure to supply electricity and its unjustifiable billing in the Southeast.

In a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, the group said if EEDC could not provide regular electricity or address its extortionate billing, it should leave the region.

IPOB accused EEDC of increasing electricity bills without a corresponding improvement in service, thereby impoverishing Southeast people.

The body urged Southeast governors to take advantage of the recent electricity reform and bring in more reliable electricity providers, to ensure the region receives quality, reliable and affordable electricity.

“Southeast governors should be serious in providing good services and a conducive investment environment in our region, for our people to continue to invest and grow their businesses. Governors should take advantage of the recent electricity reform by the Federal Government and kick EEDC out of every state.”

IPOB warned that if the governors fail to take action, they will mobilise the people to protest against the governors and EEDC.

It stressed the need for the governors to prioritise the well-being of the people, particularly in the current challenging economic climate.

Oborevwori’s alleged plot to relocate varsity sparks protest

A pressure group, Ozoro Positive Voice (OPV), has warned against alleged plot to relocate Faculty of Social Sciences and Management from Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government to Oreropke, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s hometown.

The group accused the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Mr. Godson Echegile, of plotting to move the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management to Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government.

In a statement signed by the group, Dr. Enahoro Michael said relocating the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management was akin to rendering the specialised institution unviable.

Enahoro, who traced the historical ties between Ozoro and Okpe people, claimed they were children of same parents, warning that a foreigner should not divide them.

He said: “Historically, Ozoro and Orerokpe are brothers, as they are children of same parents. As such, an Ika man cannot come and divide us for his personal acrimony and benefits.”

The group urged Governor Oborevwori to reject the move by the Echegile Godson-led governing council of the university.

Efforts to reach Information Commissioner Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza proved abortive, as calls to his phone rang out. He also did not respond to text messages.

Ex-Abia Assembly deputy speaker defects  to APC

Former Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Ifeanyi Uchendu, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Uchendu, from Isiama Ward, who served in the 7th Abia Assembly and represented Ohafia South State Constituency, was the chairman, Media and Publicity and spokesman for the House of Assembly.

The ex-deputy speaker on May 24, 2017 joined the PDP from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where he was elected to represent Ohafia South in the 6th Abia House of Assembly.

Speaking at the PDP secretariat, Finbarr’s road in Umuahia after rejoining from APGA, he said: “I consulted with my God, my people and members of my constituency before I took the decision to join PDP,” citing the crisis at APGA national leadership as reasons for his decision to go back to the PDP.

In an exclusive phone interview with our correspondent, the lawmaker, stating why he joined the APC, said: “I became a member of Abia State House of Assembly on the platform of APGA in 2015.

“I was doing well for our people, which is the most important thing. But there was need to reconnect my people to the mainstream of Abia politics that led to my joining the PDP. I joined the PDP while I had the mandate of my people.”

Reacting to criticisms that he was ungrateful to abandon a party that helped him rise through political ranks in state, he said: “Yes, I became the deputy speaker of Abia State House of Assembly due to my performance, experience and other factors.

“If I didn’t do well in my position, it would have been a curse to the PDP. But I performed well.

“At that time, my people only listened to what PDP had to say because I was there and distinguished myself at the same time.

“So it can be said that it was a mutual benefit. I promoted the party through my performance and activities.”

On why he chose APC against the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the state and what his presence would bring to the new party, Uchendu said: “APC is a national party, the ruling party in the country.

“If you must know, I contested election to represent my people at the Federal House.

“I was already yearning to push towards national politics after contributing my quota at the state level. It’s time to move to national politics.

“It will also help others to have an opportunity to grow politically at the grassroots before getting to our level.”

Communities seek protection of ex-agitators against pirates

Five coastal local governments in Akwa Ibom State are seeking protection of ex-agitators against pirates and other criminals.

The councils are Oron, Udung Uko, Mbo, Okobo and Urue-Offong Oruko.

President-General of Oro Union, Sir Essang Nsa Bassey, at a news conference decried the menace of pirates in Oro Nation.

He appealed to the state and federal governments to allow ex-militants support government security agencies in combating piracy in Oro Nation.

Bassey said: “Just like the Federal Government engaged Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Tantita Firm, to police waterways of Niger Delta against pipeline vandals and oil thieves on high seas, the same should be done in Akwa Ibom State.

“I recall that ex-militants from the state, particularly the ones from Oron Federal Constituency, approached me and suggested that they should be allowed to combat pirates on our waters.

“I think the state government can use them to protect our maritime corridor from these criminals, who have made life unbearable for us.

“If this is not done, the blue economy potential will remain a mirage. Therefore, we are appealing to the federal and state governments to think towards this.”

He also condemned marginalisation of the Oro by successive administrations.

“Successive administrations in the state have robbed Oro people of development over the years in terms of strategic infrastructure and key projects, especially the major Uyo- Nsit Atai road traversing Oro.”

Such politics of exclusion, he noted, could be seen in failure of both the state and federal government to implement the Ibaka Deep Seaport project, whose original status and nomenclature had been altered to become Ibom Deep Seaport.

Hearing in Fubara’s CoS’ motion against arrest warrant suffers setback

Hearing of motions on notice filed by Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff (CoS) to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, seeking an order vacating the arrest warrant against him and others, could not proceed yesterday.

The matter, which was on number six on the day’s cause list before Justice Emeka Nwite, was subsequently adjourned till March 4.

The development occurred shortly after counsel for the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, Simon Lough, SAN, told the court that he had not been served with Ehie’s motion filed by Oluwole Aladedoye, SAN.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, on Sunday, that Justice Nwite had fixed yesterday for the hearing of two applications filed by Aladedoye and Femi Falana, SAN, on behalf of Ehie and five others declared wanted by the police.

The judge had, on January 31, issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Ehie and others over their alleged involvement in the burning of part of the Rivers House of Assembly on October 29, 2023.

Those ordered to be arrested along with Ehie (1st defendant) are Jinjiri Bala, Happy Benneth, Progress Joseph, Adokiye Oyagiri and Chibuike Peter also known as Rambo, as 2nd to 6th defendants.

Justice Nwite gave the order while delivering a ruling in an ex-parte application brought by Lough.

The court granted the ex-parte application on the grounds that the six defendants had been at large to stand their trial in a seven-count charge preferred against five other suspected arsonists currently being prosecuted before a sister court.

While Falana filed a motion seeking an order to set aside the January 31 order, Aladedoye filed an application for a stay of execution of the arrest order.

    • ’Tantita targeting 2m bpd oil output’

Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), a private firm contracted by the Federal Government to protect Nigeria’s crude oil pipelines, says it is targeting an output of two million barrels per  day in the fight against oil theft.

Chairman of the company, Chief Government Ekpemupolo a.k.a. Tompolo, made this known at The Sun Newspaper Awards 2024 ceremony, held in Lagos, where he clinched the ‘Courage of Leadership Award’.

Receiving the award, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, media consultant to Tantita, said the firm was targeting two million barrel per day output for the country.

Stating that Tantita, in collaboration with the nation’s security agencies, has discovered several points of illegal activities, it noted that three vessels have been impounded as of this year.

He thanked the news medium for recognising their efforts, saying it would spur them to intensify their efforts.

“Since the Federal Government asked Tantita Security Company, which High Chief Dr. Government Ekpemupolo is the chairman, to protect our oil facilities, he has been making waves in the job he has been doing. So this award didn’t come to us as a surprise.

“He has asked us to inform Nigerians that they should be rest assured that he would continue to do the job, and he is going to increase the barrels to two million per day.

“Tantita is not alone in carrying out this job. They’re doing this job with the Nigerian military, and the military is also doing its best. It has been in synergy between Tantita and the military and the Civil Defence Corps as well. The synergy will continue by God’s grace. We will hit the mark that we have been clamouring for.

“We’ve discovered a lot of points that illegal activities were being done in the creek. Vessels were seized, and just this year, we’ve impounded three of them. And we will continue to do the job. We are going to block all loopholes, and nobody will be able to involve in the illegal activities,” he said.

The Managing Director of the Sun Newspaper, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, presenting the award, hailed Tompolo and his security firm for the reduction in crude oil theft and increased production.

“In deciding who wins our award, it takes a lot of vigorous processes. We examine all the pros and cons so that when we come out, we can defend any decision we’ve taken.

“Talking about Tompolo, he has done very well in curbing oil theft. Oil theft is a problem in Nigeria, and the government also knows this and says it. For the government to have confidence to say Tompolo, come and do this job, it’s something that is worth commending.

“So far, he has done well and the result is that oil theft has reduced, Nigeria’s production has increased, and that means more money for Nigeria.

“Yes, it’s for all Nigerians to support whatever that will curb oil theft. Because if it’s not curbed, the country will be bleeding, and when the country bleeds, we lose money, we lose resources and we will be looking for money to do what we’re doing.

“So it’s for everyone to support whatever that will stop that theft in the oil sector,” he said.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who received the ‘Most Impactful Royal Father of the Year’, promised to continue praying for more achievements by the former Niger Delta freedom fighter from the throne of Oduduwa.

“I want to use this medium to congratulate Government Tompolo for what he’s doing in terms of security, securing the pipelines from vandalism and also theft of crude oil.

“It has increased to 1.6 million barrels now, from less than 700 to 800 thousand, but we’re imploring that they should do more and increase it to 2.6 to 3 million barrels so that the effect of dollar and the pressure of dollar will come down in Nigeria.”

Niger Delta environmentalist, Sheriff Mulade, described Tompolo as a “patriotic” Nigerian who is determined to salvage the country’s economy from declining.

  • Tinubu can solve security, economic problems facing Nigeria, says expert Bassey James

Tinubu can solve security, economic problems facing Nigeria, says expert Bassey James

A security consultant and convener of the Southern Youth Development Forum, Pastor Bassey James has shared his perspective on Nigeria’s current security situation and proposed ways to address it.

Speaking in an interview with The Nation, James, who has a background in criminology also outlined strategies to address the challenges.

When asked about his assessment of the security situation in Nigeria and where the nation went wrong, James, who is the Managing Director of Bascon Nig. Ltd acknowledged the alarming levels of insecurity but expressed confidence that the situation could be remedied.

He commended the efforts of the President and security agencies in addressing the issue but emphasized the need for a collaborative approach involving all tiers of government.

James advocated for the inclusion of traditional rulers and local government authorities in the security policy framework, stressing the importance of community policing over the establishment of state police.

He cautioned against the potential misuse of state police by incumbent governors and highlighted the effectiveness of community policing in engaging local communities and stakeholders in security management.

James said: “The issue of insecurity in the country is alarming but it is not beyond redemption. The President and the security agencies are rising to the occasion.

“I have suggested in several fora the inclusion of traditional rulers and local government areas in the policy framework in the management of security in the country. The federal government cannot do it alone; there must be an involvement of all tiers of government.

“I have said countless times that the issue of community policing should be the focus. I differ when some people call for state police because it will cause more harm than good in a country like ours.

“Take for instance the issue of the State Independent Electoral Commission, and look at how it is being used by some state governors to harass their opponents. I have no doubt the same thing will happen with the creation of the state police. Political parties will hijack it and the opposition will suffer in the hands of the ruling party.

“The problem of insecurity in Nigeria will be solved if the government can build up a community policing mechanism that would work with the National security agencies.

“If they involved the traditional rulers in the management of internal security issues in their various communities with the involvement of the divisional police officers with the youths, market women and men, security issues will be eradicated or brought to the minimal.”

Highlighting the uniqueness of community policing, James emphasized the involvement of traditional rulers, youth organizations, and local communities in the security apparatus.

He argued that this grassroots approach would enhance security by leveraging local knowledge and networks to identify and address threats effectively.

James stated: “The uniqueness of community policing is that traditional rulers will be involved. The youth organisations, market men and women and villagers will be involved. You take if from the root and the problem will be solved.

“In a community, everybody knows who is who. When a stranger comes into their village, they will know. We have used this kind of security system in the past when we have elders watching over the communities, towns and villages.

“If we have this mechanism, the DPO will be part of the security mechanism; everyone will be involved including the police in the management of security. But if we build a state police now, it will be controlled by the government in power in the state.

“If you fall out of favour with the state governor, you will be harassed. There will be issues because the state police will be used to persecute you. In community police, nobody will be controlling anybody because we have several traditional rulers and DPOs and the cost of managing security will be reduced.”

Drawing from successful security initiatives in Akwa Ibom state under Governor Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno, James underscored the importance of visionary leadership and community engagement in tackling insecurity.

He praised the establishment of the Ibom Community Watch as a model for other states to emulate.

He added: “Every part of Nigeria needs community policing. The government only needs to provide them with gadgets and other equipment to operate.

“The nation has one of the best teams today in leadership. The president was a former governor, the VP was a former governor, and the Senate president was a former governor.

“For instance, Governor Godswill Akpabio’s magic wand in the management of security in Akwa Ibom state was top-notch.

“He set up the best joint task force and built security villages across the state. He bought patrol vehicles for the police and I was involved in the setting up of the state-of-the-art security and communication systems.

“The entire state was linked to all the security agencies in the state, border communities, emergency network was created, all the divisional police stations had communication systems, up till today, the system is still working and sustained.

“Fixing insecurity is not rocket science. It can be done, let us create border control security centres. Highway security management control units, and national communication systems inter-linking the states, local government, and all the security agencies.

“It means that every piece of information will be properly processed. We are ready to assist because we have the experience of what Governor Godswill Akpabio did in Akwa Ibom state. I also built and donated a standard police station to the Akwa Ibom state police command.

“This was acknowledged and appreciated by the then IGP. I therefore advised that security consultants and criminologists should be allowed to make contributions to national security projects. Let us utilise the land mass across the regions.

“Also, I must commend the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Uno for taking the bull by horns in setting up the Ibom community watch.

“Today, Ibom community watch is everywhere in the state working in collaboration with security agencies in the state. The outfit is headed by Rtd General. This idea must commended and should be emulated.

“Pastor Umo Eno is changing the story of security in South-South and Nigeria, jobs and peace are established by the Governor is the people are relocating to the state for business.”

Regarding economic challenges and food inflation, James urged the government to prioritize agriculture and empower citizens economically through direct access to loans.

He called for sincere investment in agriculture and collaboration between federal, state, and local governments to implement effective policies.

James said: “There is hope for Nigeria and Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu. You will agree with me that the hardship we are facing is not caused by this administration. It was inherited by this administration.

“President Tinubu can solve our economic challenges which was as a result of the fuel subsidy removal which jerked up the cost of goods and services and domestic commodities.

“We cannot continue to live a life that is not feasible. The issue of the economy has always been there, past administrations were only managing it.

“Now that we have an administration that is bold enough to hit the nail on the head and confront it headlong, Nigerians need support and I am sure things will get better.”

Advising President Bola Tinubu, James recommended converting unused land into agricultural projects, decentralizing ministries to enhance efficiency, and addressing corruption in government programs.

He emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing insecurity and expressed optimism for a better future for Nigeria.

He reiterated: “I will advise him to convert lands that are left unutilised to agriculture. I will tell him to stop immediately the transfer of money through the ministries to Nigerians because it breeds corruption. I will advise him to relocate some Ministers to some regions. There is no reason for the Agriculture Minister to be in Abuja, what is he doing in Abuja?

“The issue of insecurity can be stopped if all hands are on deck. It is possible. They need to work with state, local government, and the traditional institution. I hope Nigeria will become better.

“Recently a team from the NUC visited your proposed Southern Atlantic University, what’s that gap your university is coming to fill in Nigerian tertiary institutions?

“We are bringing in entrepreneurial skills. We are bringing ICT development projects and ingenuity to the issue of technology and education. Every indigene of Akwa Ibom is happy. It is strategically located and we are open to the world.

“We will use our university to positively affect Nigerians. It is my contribution to humanity in terms of education.”
