Southsouth APC chief calls for political inclusion of Delta Ijaw

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in the Southsouth, Mr. John Dekawei, has implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be fair to Delta Ijaw by including them in political schemes.

He spoke yesterday after a meeting with Ijaw youths from Burutu, Bomadi, Patani, Warri Southwest, Warri South and Warri North local governments of Delta State.

Dekawei said it was unfair that despite the economic viability and political contributions of Delta Ijaw, which brought President Tinubu to power, their hard work during the elections had not been appreciated or recognised via appointments.

He urged the President to correct the anomaly, stressing that the Ijaw in Delta were beginning to see their continued alienation as a well hatched plan to annihilate them from the political space.

He appealed to President Tinubu to carry the Ijaw in Delta State along in his government.

“We are calling for political inclusion of the Delta Ijaw. We can’t work like elephants during elections and not benefit in time of harvest. All is not well with the Delta Ijaw in APC.

“We know that President Tinubu is an embodiment of equity, fairness and justice. We are really worried about the current state of things in Delta State that no single Ijaw son or daughter has been tipped for federal appointment yet. We are hopeful that Mr. President will correct this political imbalance in Delta State.

“We are sad that almost all the sensitive offices have gradually gone into the hands of others.”

“As your very loyal party faithful, we cannot continue like this. Our call is a call for recognition, justice, fairness, equity and political inclusion of the Delta Ijaw in your government,” Dekawei said.

Hailing President Tinubu for his economic and people-oriented policies, he said: “We are optimistic that the Nigeria of our dream is in the making through President Tinubu.”

AAU ASUU decries misleading, damaging reports

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, chapter, has decried the “embarrassing, misleading and damaging” reports on AAU by the Special Intervention Team (SIT) of the institution.

It noted that the reports, which were tagged: ‘Interim and progress reports’, and presented to AAU’s visitor, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, in May and August, were blended by the SIT to beguile Obaseki and the public about the crisis responsible for the ill-being of the university.

The Chairperson of AAU ASUU, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, accompanied by the Assistant Secretary, Dr. William Odion, spoke yesterday at a news conference in Benin on SIT’s interim and progress reports on AAU and the crisis in the university.

Read Also; Poll will liberate Bayelsa people, says Sylva

He said: “Since the Edo State governor gave 90 days ultimatum, with effect from March 16, 2023, for the dissolution of SIT, and its replacement with a governing council, when an elaborate stakeholders’ meeting on the crisis in the university was held, SIT has been incensed to frustrate and nullify the decision by the governor to dissolve the team.

“This is responsible for the gale of false information in the reports on the university and its workers, being propagated by SIT.

“In presenting SIT’s progress report to the governor, Mr. Austin Osakue claimed that SIT had uncovered academic fraud in the university. He alleged that over 30 students schooling overseas (abroad) had graduated from AAU due to the marking of their examination answer scripts by lecturers of the university. ASUU considers this allegation of academic fraud as an illusion and demands publication of the names, courses, departments, years of graduation of the students in question, as well as details of the lecturers involved in the alleged academic fraud.

“Does graduation of students in a university start and end with ‘marking of scripts?’ Among other requirements, for a student to graduate in a university, first, the student must be admitted, registered, take lectures, pass examinations of courses and get approval of results/recommendations for graduation from Department Board of Studies, Faculty Board of Studies and the Senate of the University. Why then is the graduation of the students in the alleged academic fraud restricted to ‘marking of scripts by lecturers?’ Undoubtedly, it is a ploy to give dog a bad name, so as to hang it.

“For self-serving reasons, a particular member of the SIT, who is the de facto chairman of the team, is preoccupied with, and committed to blackmailing the academic officials of the university and de-marketing AAU, in order to consign the image of the university to the hall of shame.”

AAU ASUU called for a thorough, transparent and just investigation of the claim of academic fraud in the university.

“I was with Governor Diri yesterday and looking at the candidates that are available, I believe he is the one we need to support. This is because when anybody comes in now, what they will tell us is that they meet empty treasury. Therefore, this one that is already working with development partners and other stakeholders should be allowed to continue.

“Diri has done a lot of things that are not in the public domain and even those that are in the public domain he cannot be perfect, but I think he is trying, so we have to support him to continue.”

‘Alagoa’s impact on Ijaw nation, Nigeria remarkable’

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has said through his literary works and exemplary lifestyle, foremost historian, Emeritus Professor Ebiegberi Alagoa, has brought honour to the Ijaw nation and Nigeria.

Speaking in Yenagoa at the weekend during the 90th birthday celebration of the iconic historian, Governor Diri said his contributions to the development of the Ijaw nation, Bayelsa and Nigeria were remarkable, adding that his name had been written in the sands of time.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that at 90, Alagoa is an accomplished scholar not because of his literary works, but also because of the success in raising his children.

Diri thanked God for not only keeping the nonagenarian celebrator, but for also granting him good health and prayed for more fruitful years ahead.

Describing his Nembe-Ijaw ancestry as a land blessed with intellectuals that have distinguished themselves in fields, Diri, however, expressed concern that Nembe had in recent times been in the news for the wrong reasons and urged the leaders to do more to restore peace to their area.

He said: “We heard about Prof as children. Fortunately, I also passed through the University of Port Harcourt Faculty of Social Sciences, while Prof was a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities.

“So, this is a man who has projected the image of Bayelsa and Ijaw nation to the world and today, we are celebrating a giant. Not only are you 90 years, you are hale and healthy. You have equally brought up your children well.

“Sir, on behalf of the good people of Bayelsa State, we celebrate you on attaining this age. God has blessed you and we pray for more years in good health.

But, unfortunately, Nembe has been in the spotlight nationally for negative reasons in recent times. I therefore appeal to the leaders of Nembe to do more to restore peace to the area.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by King Amalate Turner, described Alagoa as an example of success and thanked God for keeping him in good health at 90.

Mbah vows to realise founding fathers’ dreams

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has said his administration is determined to realise the goals and dreams of the state’s founding fathers through innovation and good governance.

He said this in a statement at the weekend to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the creation of the state.

Extolling Enugu’s founding fathers, who fought for the creation of the state in 1991, the governor said their sacrifices had never been in vain, as successive administrations had sustained their legacies and work towards the realisation of the dreams.

In the statement he issued through the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Mainstream Media, Dan Nwomeh, the governor said the target of his government was to go beyond the sustenance of the dreams to actualise them through innovation and good governance philosophy.

“I salute the determination and sacrifices of our founding fathers and all those that contributed in one way or the other in the tortuous journey of ensuring that the quest for a state of our own came to fruition. We will never take their sacrifices for granted.

“Our agenda is to immortalise them by fashioning out a state they will be proud of and a state that will stand as a reference point in socio-economic transformation in the country.

“Over the past 32 years, we have witnessed commendable transformation meant to sustain the dreams of our founding fathers.

However, what our administration is doing is that we are no longer comfortable with the incremental model because the world is fast evolving through technologies and new ways of doing things.”

“We started this by laying a new foundation that will promote sub-optimisation in governance. We have started doing things differently because we want a state where posterity will be kind to us. We want a state where our children will judge us fairly. We want a state where poverty will be a thing of the past.

“We understand that these are not going to be easy, but with your support, and our commitment to our governance philosophy, I can say we will get there faster than ever imagined.

“We are determined to take our economy from the current $4.4 billion to $30 billion, and we are laying the necessary foundation for this exponential economic revolution.

“We have made consequential statements on security and backed them with action to guarantee investment inflow. We will not rest on our oars until the last atom of threat to our people’s peace and security is escorted out of the state,” the statement said.

The governor wished the people happy 32nd anniversary.
