Igbo urged to invest at home

The Association of South East Town Unions (ASETU) has urged the Igbo living outside the Southeast to invest in the region.

ASETU, who noted that the Igbo had the highest population of wealthy Nigerians, said repatriation of such wealth would bring development, provide job opportunities and reduce vices in Igbo land.

ASETU National President Chief Emeka Diwe, speaking at the 2022 Imo Workshop titled: ‘Aku Ruo Ulo (Repatriate Wealth)’, organised in Aba by the Association of Imo Indigenous Town Unions, Abia State chapter, said the union had launched an economic action plan for making wealthy Igbo people living outside Igbo land to bring their wealth home.

He said if the Igbo residing outside Igbo land repatriated 20 per cent of their wealth, no Igbo man would think of living and investing outside Igbo land.

He added that the Igbo must realise that their land was blessed with human and material resources to become another Dubai, stressing that ASETU was committed to ending the capital flight and brain drain in Igbo land.

The President-General of Ala Igbo Development Forum (ADF), Prof. Uzodinma Nwala, who was the guest speaker, advised Ndigbo to think home and set up businesses in Igbo land.

LP candidate to youths: Elections not won on social media

Anambra North candidate on the platform of Labour Party (LP), Dr. Tony Nwoye, has advised youths to be part of the electoral system, to enable them determine who leads them after the 2023 general election.

He stressed the need for them to obtain permanent voter cards (PVCs), saying the campaign on social media was different from actualising their dreams through voting.

Nwonye, former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), spoke at Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government while signing peace accord to demonstrate his commitment towards peaceful and credible poll.

He said his major interest was inclusion of youths and persons with disabilities, underscoring the need for them to be encouraged, engaged and empowered to ensure a peaceful nation.

He regretted youths’ involvement in exuberances and vices, rather than channelling their energies in positive adventures.

The Executive Director, Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), Nonso Orakwe, said the visit was to partner the candidate to foster peaceful and credible election in his zone.

“CATYCOI is a youth-led organisation determined to promote good governance and democracy.

  • Omo-Agege: I’ve executed more projects in Delta Central than Okowa

Omo-Agege: I’ve executed more projects in Delta Central than Okowa

Delta governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC) Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said he has executed more infrastructural projects and touched the lives of more people in the past seven and half years in Delta Central Senatorial District than Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Omo-Agege, who was holding a town hall interactive meeting in Warri with the leadership of ECWA Christian block on Sunday, assured the group that if they vote him, he will run an all-inclusive government that the church will surely be part of.

He said as a Senator, he has attracted over 300 projects to the Delta Senatorial district that are critical and life touching.

He reeled out that in spite the over N3 trillion that has come into the state as revenue since 2015, the Governor has done virtually nothing.

The Deputy Senate President expressed more worries over the recent claim by Rivers Governor, Nyesome Wike, that President Buhari has graciously approved the release of outstanding deductions from the 13 percent derivation fund to all the oil-producing Niger Delta Governors, for which Gov. Okowa received a whooping N260 billion but failed to disclose it to Deltans.

He averred that the attitude of Okowa as it relates to the 13% refund, coupled with the fact that he has, over the past few years, took loans totalling over N400 billions with no commensurate development, is an indication of bad governance.

Omo-Agege urged Deltans to vote him so as to save the State from Okowa and Sm adding that he would turn things around by what he would do differently.

“”Okowa and Sheriff may not be bad personally but their priorities are not right. It is a matter of judgment. The judgment which Okowa and Sheriff have executed is a bad judgment.

“And so, we are saying that we want to move Delta State in a different direction. How do we do that? First, we sat down with the best brain we could assemble in Delta State. And we identified four critical areas that are more problematic with Deltans. And we christened those four areas in our manifesto as EDGE Agenda – Employment and Empowerment, Development, Good Governance and Enduring Peace and Securit,” he noted.

Expatiating on employment and empowerment, Omo-Agege pledged to create an enabling environment that will attract companies that has relocated from the state,, adding that “they will begin to create jobs for our people.”

Responding to questions during the interactive session on the moribund Warri, Koko and Burutu ports, Omo-Agege promised to work in synergy with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as President for the Federal government to dredge the Warri port and bury deeper the oil pipelines under the river to allow bigger vessels to land in the port.

“We have decided that we can approach our in-coming president by the grace of God, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is of the same party with us, to help bury deeper those pipelines and make the Warri port, the Koko port and Burutu ports functional again to create jobs for our people”, he assured.

Omo-Agege urged the people to vote for him and Tinubu for a better synergy to make the ports become functional once again.

He also explained the Empowerment component of the EDGE Agenda to include the empowerment of women by way of providing government-guaranteed soft bank loans for those who are trained in various skill acquisitions, adding that he will attract investors to invest in youths who are technologically-inclined to convert their ingenuity to positive development.

On security, Omo-Agege promised that if voted for to become the next governor of the state, he would invest heavily in security architecture by way of introducing sophisticated technological devices that can track every where in the State in real time, noting that the system has proved very effective in the few states where it has been deployed.

When asked about the slow pace of work on the Amukpe-Uromi federal highway, Omo-Agege informed that out of the N400 billion hitherto frozen NDDC fund recently approved by President Buhari for release, about N15 billion will be used to mobilize the contractor back to site on that road while about N90 billion has been earmarked for the maintenance of the Warri-Benin highway.

On what will be the position of non-indigenes in his government, Omo-Agege disclosed that if he becomes the governor of the State next year, his administration will not entertain any form of discrimination, adding that he would place priority on the capacity and experience of those whom he would work with irrespective of their tribe and religion.

On what would be his approach to the resuscitation of agriculture, Omo-Agege assured that he will also get the banks involved in loan support for mechanized farming to be guaranteed by the State, adding that the state will also attempt to cushion the losses of farmers and provide enabling environment for agric value chain.

He reiterated his resolve not to probe his predecessors, adding that the votes for him to become the governor was for him to turn the fortune of the State around for good and move it in the right direction, but not to hold personal vendetta against past leaders.

Omo-Agege submitted that for the sake that he has a “legion” of enemies, when he becomes the next governor, he must strive to live above board.

While introducing the APC Governorship Candidate, the Director-General of the Campaign Council, Elder Godsday Orubebe, noted that Omo-Agege was a God-fearing man whose passion for human welfare is unparalleled.

Quoting from the Bible book of Proverbs which says “when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: But when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn”, Orubebe stated that the APC Governorship candidate is going round the State because of the vision he has for the people, adding that he is poised to do things differently and usher in a new Delta State.

High point of the event was the prayers offered by the leaders of the ECWA block for the success of the APC and the Governorship candidate, Ovie Omo-Agege.

  • Tension in Abia as herders allegedly invade farms

Tension in Abia as herders allegedly invade farms

Palpable fear and tension have gripped indigenes of Uzuakoli community in Bende Local Government of Abia State, following last Friday’s alleged invasion of farms.

The traditional ruler of Ngwu Uzuakoli Autonomous Community, Eze Joseph Okorie, told reporters in his palace at the weekend that herders invaded people’s farms with their cattle for grazing.

He alleged that the armed herders uprooted cassava and yam tubers on the farms for their cattle.

Okorie estimated the extent of damage on the farms at over N20million.

He said the incident had brought misery to the victims, numbering at least 15.

The royal father further said that the community had suffered similar herders’ attacks for more than a decade.

He said his own farm had once been attacked, with yam, cassava and vegetable “destroyed and wasted.”

Okorie was flanked at the briefing by his Prime Minister, Chief Kanu Imo, the community’s President-General, Mr. Chimezie Ugorji and other leaders, including Chief Emmanuel Arisa.

They said their assailants always struck at odd hours of the night as well as on Afor Market days and Sundays, when people do not go to farm.

They lamented that the attack had persisted because the local and state governments had failed to intervene and put an end to it.

They said the community had made efforts to elicit the sympathy and genuine governments’ attention to their plight to no avail.

Okorie recalled that the Uzuakoli Traditional Rulers Council sent a Save-Our-Soul letter to the state government and House of Assembly in 2012 in the wake of an attack.

He said his community had petitioned the state government and copied the House of Assembly, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9 as well as Commissioner of Police and other security agencies in Abia on the issue.

The traditional ruler said the community women had staged protests round the community as well as Government House, Umuahia and Abia Assembly to express their grievances and solicit government’s intervention.

He said: “During one of their protests to the Uzuakoli Divisional Police Station, they encountered some military personnel on the road and laid their complaints to them.”

Okorie said the 14 Brigade Command of the Nigerian Army later invited the community to a peace meeting with the state leadership of the herdsmen.

He said the community was advised to either sell off their farm produce to the herders or fence their farms to avert future attacks.

“We are predominantly farmers and farming is our only means of livelihood.

“We spend huge sums of money to get land, cultivate it, weed and tend it only for these herders to come and destroy our efforts at the time of harvest,” Okorie said.

He further said that the development portended grave consequences, including food shortage, for his community and its environs.

The community leaders regretted that there had been no positive actions from the state and local governments, in terms of compensations to the victims of the attacks.

They further said that those who were physically assaulted and injured for daring the armed herders were left to their fate.

They cited the case of an indigene whose four fingers were chopped off after he confronted the herders to vacate his farm with their cattle.

“The state government has not responded to our petitions either by way of compensation or catering for those who were injured by the herders,” they said.

They appealed to the state government to come to their rescue in order to avert a reprisal by the angry youths.

“It is no longer news that these herders move about with dangerous weapons and sometimes order their cattle to also attack their victims on their own farms, whenever they were challenged.

“It is said that only a mad man can challenge a man with a gun.

“However, they should not take our meekness for weakness and timidity.

“This is the reason for this briefing to further seek the timely intervention of the government and other relevant agencies before the situation gets out of hand,” they said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the victims at the briefing included Messrs. Innocent Onyeabor, Donatus Ndukwe, Emmanuel Anukwu and Sunday Asaga.

The men, who were in their mid-70s, said farming remained their only means of livelihood.

They feared that their families and the entire community could be plunged into serious famine in the new year, if steps were not taken to permanently stop the attacks.

The National Leader, Third Phase Ex-agitators under the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Comrade Tonye Bobo, has commended the Interim Administrator of PAP, Major General Barry Ndiomu (rtd.), for getting rid of the massive payroll fraud in the scheme.

Comrade Bobo, who made the commendation in a statement on Friday, described Ndiomu as a brilliant ex-general, astute administrator and lawyer who had brought his knowledge and wealth of experience to bear on the Amnesty Programme.

He noted that the PAP boss was able to take the bull by the horn by blocking the corrupt practices in the Amnesty Office that led to the discovery of payroll fraud in the programme.

Bobo said without equivocation that Ndiomu had done the right things to ensure that it was no longer business as usual in repositioning the PAP to its core mandate of reintegrating the ex-agitators.

Bobo also lauded the National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), for the successful inauguration of Ndiomu as the Chairman of 11-man Special Investigative Panel on Oil Theft.
