  • Oil communities mull protest over expired DESOPADEC board

Oil communities mull protest over expired DESOPADEC board

Oil producing communities across Delta State have threatened to protest against Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the failure to reconstitute a board for the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

The communities, under the aegis of the Delta Oil Producing Communities Advocacy Group (DOPAG), slammed the expired board for what they described as “dismal performance,” throughout their tenure.

In a statement to reporters in Warri, the group said that the protests will hold in Asaba and Abuja until a new board is reconstituted.

The statement was signed by DOPAG’s interim chairman, secretary and publicity secretary, Aphensus Dibi, Claude Oghenekevwe and Collins Layefa.

The group said the Federal Government will be asked to halt the payment of the 13 per cent derivation to the Delta State Government “until it does the needful regarding dissolving the overstaying board of DESOPADEC or disbandment of the Commission altogether, so as to allow payment of the derivation revenue to the communities directly.”

They accused Governor Okowa of reducing the interventionist agency to “a mere ministry for political compensation.”

DOPAG further lamented that the failure of the State Governor to appoint another board is already causing untold hardship in the oil communities.

“Government should pity the oil producing Communities and reconstitute the Board of DESOPADEC, since the tenure of the current Board has expired. Elongating the tenure of non-performing board is a disservice to the hapless communities.

“The lack of accountability and transparency of the current board is largely attributed to political patronage and interest groups. No reasonable people and society can develop with an unaccounted leadership.

“Today, all the Commission does is to pay salaries and receive their emoluments. Even that which is due to the communities has been withheld. This is a sad story!

“In the past, the oil companies were our problem; today, we are the architect of our enslavement.

“Since the coming of this board, there has been steady increase of oil price in the international market largely due to the Russian versus Ukraine war, and Delta State has been reported as being among states receiving highest due allocations from the Federation Account.

“These are facts. So, there is no excuse why the oil communities are suffering in the face of oil pollution, environmental degradation and all manners of diseases currently ravaging the communities.

“Government is supposed to serve the people but the reverse is now the case. If this continues without the reconstitution of the Board, we will be left no option but to protest publicly and call on the Federal Government to stop further release of the 13% derivation allocation to Delta State, until this anomaly and the fraud associated with DESOPADEC is transparently investigated to instill probity, accountability and inspire confidence of the suffering communities.

“There is a law that made it mandatory to the state to remit 50% of the 13% Derivation Fund to the DESOPADEC board. That’s is the amount that is being pillaged and looted by the DESOPADEC Board headed by Bashorun Askia Ogieh, the governor’s helmsman,” other parts of the statement read.

    An NGO’s milk of kindness

The devastating flood in Bayelsa could have been worse for some people, especially pregnant women and children but for the intervention of the Goldcoast Developmental Foundation, Mike Odigwe reports

As flood waters continue to submerge homes, farmlands and other sources of livelihood in Bayelsa, nursing mothers and kids in the state have every reason to thank God as they have been saved from the menace of the disaster courtesy of the efforts of a Non-governmental organization, the Goldcoast Developmental Foundation.

The foundation which was established about 10 years ago, has at the core of its focus, education, health, youth empowerment/development, including talent discovery and care for the elderly as well as the less privileged people in the society. All of these it has successfully achieved with the assistance of willing partners and like minds.

However, the foundation took its activities a notch higher when it decided to rescue pregnant women and kids, who were considered to be more vulnerable during this flood season. The foundation has established a temporary shelter home, the first of its kind in the state, dedicated for them and ensured that the victims have a roof over their head with nothing to worry about.

According to some of the nursing mothers, the temporary shelter was more than a home for them. They said the foundation’s gesture has erased the pains they would have gone through if they had stayed in other crowded camps set up for flood victims.

Explaining her experience, one of the nursing mothers, Rita Wori Abade said “the flood took over our environment, where I sleep, my bedroom, the street and I had no where to sleep, that was why I came to the temporary shelter home. They are doing good job and I appreciate them. They have been feeding us very well from the time we arrived.

“For our babies, they gave us diapers, wrappers, wipes, foodstuff and the rest, medical care. It has been a wonderful experience and God will continue to bless and provide for them”.

Another nursing mother, Precious Priscilla Terther while narrating her experience at the temporary shelter home, said she doesn’t feel like returning to her home even when the flood recedes.

“The flood made me and my family to come here. I thank God for the great privileged to be among those that were lucky to come here. They have been wonderful, attending to our needs and making sure we do not lack anything.

“They brought medical team to take care of us, fed us, they do all sorts of things for us, to help us go through this period. We are so grateful and may God continue to bless them, the workers, the founders may God bless all of you in Jesus name. Amen.”

Realizing the good intentions of the foundation, the Bayelsa Specialist Hospital (BSH), offered to provide a comprehensive medical support to those in the shelter home. Officials of the hospital said their decision was complimentary.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Mrs Cynthia Oye Isang in an interview said: “my team and I came here to contribute our little quota to this group of nursing mothers who were also affected by the flood. The effect of the flood is adverse, we can not deny that fact, and a lot of people have been displaced, so you can only imagine how stressful it is for nursing mothers to cater for their infants in this kind of condition.

“So, as a health care facility, we decided to come out to see what we can do to support the women. We are doing a couple of things. First of all the sensitisation of all the nursing mothers, to remind them and prompt them to take proper health care measures during this period.

“We also stepped out to encourage them with a word of support and our team are on standby, to make sure that we test them for malaria and other basic ailments, so that appropriate treatment could be prescribed if any, but generally just to give them a ray of hope that all is well”.

The coordinator of the Goldcoast Development Foundation Ms Brenda Izu, told our correspondent that they were driven by passion and the need to offer help when needed, adding that their little efforts were encouraged and supported by some individuals, organizations and the Bayelsa State Government.

“We were grateful to be supported by the Bayelsa State Government, the Bayelsa Specialist Hospital, the State Emergency Management Agency, FIDA Bayelsa, the Gloria Diri Foundation, Nigeria Red cross, Bayelsa, Women-IN INC central zone, Beautiful Minds initiative and so many others,” she said.

Court affirms Nwobasi as APGA Reps candidate in Ebonyi

The Abakaliki Division of the Federal High Court has affirmed the former leader of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Joseph Nwobasi, as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Ezza North/Ishielu federal constituency in the 2023 general election.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Fatun Riman, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept and publish the name of the plaintiff (Nwobasi) as the candidate of APGA for Ezza North/Ishielu federal constituency.

The court agreed with the plaintiff that Edwin Nwonu, the incumbent member representing the constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is not a member of APGA and cannot substitute Nwobasi as APGA candidate for the 2023 general election.

The court barred the leadership of APGA, Nwonu or their agents from further attempts to substitute the name of the plaintiff as the candidate of the party ahead of the election.

Ezikeanyi, a graduate of Adult Education and Administration, University of Nigeria, Nsukka said his aim of inventing the calendar was to give the Igbo alternative dating system from the conventional English calendar.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration is prioritising improved access to quality and affordable health care for senior citizens, to enable them live longer, Executive Secretary Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) Dr. Izedonmwen Omosigho has said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated the Chief Executive Officer of Azikel Refinery, Dr. Azibapu Eruani, on his conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said this in a congratulatory message yesterday in Abuja.

“The industrialist served the state with distinction and without blemish,” Jonathan said.

He was upbeat that Eruani’s first private hydro skimming refinery in Nigeria would cushion the effects of the scarcity of refined petroleum products in the country.

“On behalf of my family, l offer my sincere felicitations to you on your conferment with the national honour of the CFR, by President Buhari.

Jonathan said Eruani’s trailblazing feat of establishing the first private hydro skimming refinery in Nigeria was a courageous achievement that inspired and galvanised many Nigerians to aim for the stars in productive entrepreneurship.

“I believe Buhari appreciates the fact that your refinery will contribute immensely to cushion the effects of the scarcity of refined products in the country.

“Your trajectory in industry and entrepreneurship did not come to me as a surprise, given your passion for service, sense of patriotism and the capacity you displayed while serving as my Adviser on Community Health among others.

“I congratulate you on this feat and wish you more strides and higher glory,” he said.

Attempt to stop APC governorship candidate’s case rejected

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday rejected a bid by Senator Ita Enang to strike out All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Obong Akan Udofia’s action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for allegedly being filed out of time.

Udofia had filed an action to compel INEC to publish his name and particulars, having been declared the winner of the APC governorship primaries in Akwa Ibom State.

Addressing the court, counsel for Udofia, Valentine Offia, argued that INEC’s omission of Udofia’s name occurred on July 22, while the suit was filed on August 1.

He said the computation of time fell within the statutory 14 days period for such pre-election matters prescribed in 285(9) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The court upheld Udofia’s argument that the case was properly filed in time, thereby thwarting any move by Enang to render it out of time.

Case was adjourned till October 17 for hearing on joinder.
