Disgruntled APC defectors to Delta PDP not my political family – Emerhor

The founding leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, yesterday, said those disgruntled All Progressive Congress, APC defectors to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are not members of Emerhor Political Forum, EPF.

Emerhor made this statement while debunking a media report that members of his political group, Emerhor Political Family (EPF) are set to decamp to the PDP, noting that only a few disgruntled individuals led by the former Deputy State Chairman, Chief Cyril Ogodo are defecting.

The 2015 APC governorship candidate in Delta State said the categorisation of the defection of a few stomach politicians to the PDP after allegedly receiving cash inducements, as a move by Emerhor Political Family, EPF, is not only laughable but also mischievous and disingenuous.

The Delta State APC Chieftain and leader said the purported defection of Chief Cyril Ogodo, Chief Sylvester Kohwo and a few others to the PDP does not mean that members of the Emerhor Political Family are decamping to the PDP as reported, saying that only a few disgruntled individuals are involved.

Emerhor said, “Only Chief Ogodo, Chief Kohwo and a few who have now become stomach politicians are decamping after allegedly receiving cash inducements as ‘rally mobilisation.

“Emerhor’s political structures are intact. Hon Chief Alfred Oloko is the State Coordinator and Head of the EPF. Chief Cyril Ogodo was never the Head.

“The EPF Elders Forum is also intact. The Elders Forum is meeting this week to replace Chief Sylvester Kohwo, the erstwhile chairman. Indeed, I met with these few over this last weekend and after our discussions, it was clear to me that it is greed that is behind their defection.”

He noted that as individuals, they are free to associate with any group or party in their political quest, stressing that it is, however, mischievous for them to try to use the name and clout of EPF to promote themselves in order to up their stake and cash price with PDP.

He said the defection of a handful of individuals whose membership of EPF is at best parasitical, does not in anyway diminish the resolve of genuine members of EPF to join other progressives to rescues Delta come 2023.

  • ‘How we tackled hoodlums, cultists, others in Yenagoa’

‘How we tackled hoodlums, cultists, others in Yenagoa’

The Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Chief Uroupaye Nimizuoa, has asserted that his council in collaboration with security agencies have minimised the activities of hoodlums, cultists and other criminal elements in the area.

Nimizuoa, popularly called the ‘Mayor of Yenagoa City’, made this known in an interview to reflect on his administration’s two years in office.

He said since he came on board, he had ensured that the security apparatus and networks within the area were beefed up, noting the council administration provided necessary security gadgets for the security personnel and restored solar light for the secretariat complex.

Nimizuoa said: “In order to curb activities of hoodlums, suspected cultists and other criminals, we gave marching order to fence round the Amarata Health Centre in Constituency 1 where some hoodlums used to meet.

“You know Yenagoa City is the host to Bayelsa State capital where all kinds of characters exist. So the first thing we thought of was the security of lives and property of the inhabitants.

“When we came on board, we started by setting up a security committee which swung  into action by going to the communities to discuss with the Community Development Committees (CDCs) on  how best to tackle security challenges in the communities in Yenagoa.

“No doubt, security  is a major challenge. So we went into the flash points to see what we could do. We moved into the communities and discussed with the leadership and set up vigilance groups because security is everybody’s business.

“This we did in conjunction with youth leaders who are more familiar with the terrains. We also supported them financially to carry out their duties. We also ensured that we settled some of the communal crises. We know that the settlement of such crisis is very important because a divided community could also affect governance.”

He said that in Constituency 3, there was a health facility built by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) which had no access road and it was agreed that it would have three components of partnership to bring it to life.

Nimizuoa said: “The partnership comprised the oil major, the community and the local government. The community was to provide the land and the council was to construct  the walkway to the facility. That was the first thing we did  in Constituency 3 in Tuburu community. That one has been completed, awaiting inauguration.

“Also in Constituency 1, we looked at the Igbogene market that usually disrupts traffic as a result of trading activities along the road. So we deployed resources to renovate the market and that action has helped considerably to ensure free flow of traffic on market days.”

He said the council administration enjoys a cordial relationship with the Douye Diri administration.

He said all the successes his council had recorded in curbing criminal activities could not have been possible without the assistance of the state government.

The LG chair stated: “On security, as the host council area, we carry out orders from the Governor. We are his foot soldiers. For instance, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we set up task force in response to the state government’s order.

“During the #EndSARS protests, we carried out orders from the government. Governor Diri is a listening governor, so when he gives orders, we carry it out to the letter. So the relationship between the council and the state government is very cordial. We thank Governor Douye Diri for always being there for us.”

Plight of Enugu youths condemnable – Ex UDP candidate Ozoemena

Candidate of the United Democratic Party (UDP) governorship in Enugu State during the 2019 general election, Pastor Donatus Obi-Ozoemena, has again declared his intention to contest for the same office in 2023.

Obi-Ozoemena, who said he would contest on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) this time, said his decision to contest was informed by requests from Enugu people, especially the youth populace, who, according to him, were the ones that pressured him to run under APGA.

He disclosed this at the grand finale of expanded version of his annually-sponsored football tournament/charity outreach.

Addressing a crowd of supporters and guests at the event which was attended by the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Oye, and several party chieftains, the cleric noted that his latest move was driven by a burning desire to change the face of Enugu State through good governance laced with equitable transformation and delivery of democracy dividends to the doorsteps of the people.

He said: “On behalf of my family, I want to appreciate the good people of Enugu State. We are humbled by your great prayers and support since we became public and we are ever encouraged to do all we can with all of us joining hands together to make our great state, Enugu, the best place to be in the world.

“I, hereby, officially announce here in Sansiro Field, Onoli, Awgu that I will run for the office of the governor of Enugu State in 2023 under APGA. However, this time, it would be in a different dimension, because the inhabitants of Enugu State have decided, and I believe that with the great efforts of the people of all the 17 local government areas in the state, we will break the lopsided jinx of one system of leadership in our dear state.

“After the 2019 elections, it did not cross my mind to return to the political scene, but after considering the overwhelming encouragement, support and prayers of our people, young and old, I made up my mind to present myself to be your servant, and lead in rebuilding our state to greatness.”

“It hurts my heart to keep seeing our youths battling with the same predicaments that they had been subjected to year in, year out; predicament of lack of hope, joblessness and insecurity, among others. I assure you that with God, there is great hope for you. But it’s totally in your hands as we cannot keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results. The time is now! Your actions and involvement in APGA and Save Enugu State Now Movement’s activities will determine your future and the future of our yet unborn children and youths.”

  • Bayelsa vows to weed out illegal academic institutions

Bayelsa vows to weed out illegal academic institutions

Bayelsa State government has vowed that it is going to weed out illegal academic institutions operating in the state.

The threat came just as the government said yesterday that it had uncovered 12 unapproved private schools out of the 112 operating currently in the state.

It noted that it was doing all it could to improve the standard of education by ensuring that illegal academic institutions were not condoned.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, revealed this at a press conference in Yenagoa to herald the 2022 Bayelsa State Education Summit.

He said it was the right of parents to decide if their children should attend private or public schools.

But he frowned at a situation where parents preferred ill-equipped private schools with poorly trained teachers to public schools that have better trained teachers and well equipped with modern teaching tools.

While highlighting the various achievements of government in the education sector in the past 24 years of the state’s creation, Emelah said the state had built 547 primary schools, 195 secondary schools and nine tertiary institutions, all of which are funded by the state.

The commissioner said: “These strides are attributable to the several thousands of dedicated teachers, principals, administrators and officers and staff at the ministry, both past and present. Within same year, the ministry embarked on two inspection tours of primary and secondary schools across the state.

“We synchronised our findings with the content of our Annual Schools Census reports of very recent years with regard to the infrastructural needs in schools, availability and quality of teachers, general enrollment numbers and transition rates from primary to secondary schools.”

To this end, Emelah said the government would organise a State Education Summit which is scheduled to hold from 7th to 10th February, 2022, to produce forward looking ideas and vision for the next 15 years in a relatable education plan and policy.

He said former President Goodluck Jonathan would present the keynote for the summit.

Fuel price: ‘End hardship in Nigeria’ protest rocks Benin

Hundreds of protesters in Benin, the Edo State capital, yesterday called on the Federal Government to ensure the refining of crude oil in Nigeria and to drop the planned hike in the price of petrol.

The protesters, who are members of People’s Alternative Movement (PAM), were led by its Southsouth Coordinator, Dr. Osagie Obayuwana, who was accompanied by Rev. Fr. Benedict Onwugbenu, the Coordinator, Justice Development and Peace Commission, of the Catholic Church.

The displeased Nigerians were armed with placards, bearing various inscriptions, including: “Abolish poverty, have security”, “Nigeria belongs to us all” and “Join the campaign now, no to more poverty.”

Obayuwana said: “Life in Nigeria is a life of hardship. A lot of Nigerians are leaving the country, on account of hardship. Nigeria remains the poverty capital of the world. The inflation rate in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world.

“To end the problem in the petroleum industry, Nigeria’s crude oil should be refined in the country. Greed works against the collective interest of the people. The mess we find ourselves in this country is on account of the greed of few persons.”

PAM’s Southsouth coordinator also assured that the protest would continue on January 27.

Meanwhile, wheelbarrow pushers, yesterday in Benin and its environs, protested extortion by revenue collectors in Edo state.

The wheelbarrow pushers, mostly youths, alleged that they were each daily paying N500 or more to the revenue collectors.

One of the protesting wheelbarrow pushers, Abdullahi Nora, urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to call the revenue collectors to order, in view of the prevailing hardship.
