  • Anambra’s three-man election tribunal begins sitting

    • Orders INEC to allow Uba, Soludo inspect materials

    • ACCORD candidate withdraws petition

The three-man Anambra Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has kicked off in the state, headed by Justice B. Mohammed

Other members are Justice Edem Akpan and Justice O. H. Oyajimi

At its inaugural sitting at the state judiciary complex yesterday, the tribunal ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the candidates inspect the election materials.

The two leading candidates were those of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Andy Uba and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

The exparte motion was filed by Soludo. The tribunal said the materials should be inspected in the presence of security operatives.

The candidate of ACCORD Party, Dr. Godwin Maduka, has withdrawn his petition against the declaration of Soludo by INEC as the winner of the November 6 election.

Maduka’s lawyer, Mr. N. D. Agu, had filed an application, praying the tribunal to strike out the matter on the grounds that his client was no longer interested in the petition.

Agu said that although he duly filed the petition, none of the respondents was served.

The Nation gathered that four political parties that filed petitions against Soludo might withdraw their petitions before the end of this month.

The reason, according to a source, was based on the issues the candidates were said to be having with their party leadership.

  • Anambra APC holds separate caucus meetings in Abuja

Anambra APC holds separate caucus meetings in Abuja

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has taken a new dimension, with the party holding separate caucus meetings yesterday in Abuja.

The problem is, who takes over the leadership of the party in the state between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige and the governorship candidate of the party, Sen. Andy Uba.

While the faction led by the state Secretary, Chukwuma Agufugo, had scheduled a meeting at Ngige’s Abuja residence to adopt him, Uba’s group led by the state Chairman, Chief Basil Ejidike, would meet at a place in Maitama, Abuja.

In his reaction yesterday over the development, a former member of the House of Representatives, Victor Afam-Ogene, said it was a battle of bigwigs.

Said he: “The stage appears set for the determination of who truly is the leader of the APC in Anambra State.

“The chapter has been in crises of sorts, after the putative leader, Minister of Labour and Employment  Dr. Chris Ngige abandoned the flock in the run up to the recently concluded governorship election.

“Ngige had kicked against the processes that threw up the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Sen. Uba, and thereafter distanced himself from the party’s quest to clinch the Anambra State Government House.

“But soon after the November 6 governorship election was concluded, the minister made a dramatic return, with intent to superintendent over the coming state congress, whereupon new executives to run the affairs of the party in the next four years will be chosen.

“You cannot abandon your troops in war time and seek a return to lead this same beleaguered people in peace time.”

Ogene  added: “Indeed, a pointer to the current face-off is the fact that both contending groups have fixed meetings of the state caucus of the party for tomorrow (today) in Abuja.

“While the Ngige group is, according to an invitation sent out by the suspended state Secretary of the party, Chukwuma Agufugo, meeting at the Justice Mohammed Bello, Asokoro home of the minister, the group loyal to Senator Uba and the current Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke, is holding its parley somewhere in the Maitama area of the city.

“In the latter group are the state Chairman of the party, Chief Ejidike, current and former national and state assemblies’ members, former governorship aspirants and 14 of the 17 members of the state working committee of the party.

“The number of state caucus members who attend any of the two meetings will determine where the leadership balance will tilt,” Ogene said.

The lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor 2 Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Michael Chinda, has decried the dilapidated condition of internal roads in his constituency.

He spoke yesterday at plenary during a debate on the 2022 Appropriation Bill.

Governor Nyesom Wike last week presented a budget estimate of N483, 173, 307,96 billion to the lawmakers.

The bill passed the first reading shortly after the presentation. The House reconvened yesterday to debate on the documents.

All the legislators, who made contributions, spoke in favour of the bill.

Chinda condemned the idea of providing roads where little percentage of the state’s population are, while densely- populated areas are ignored.

He said: “We have internal roads being provided in areas where people are not staying, internal roads leading to farm areas.”

Wike queries legionnaires’ utilisation of govt’s N150m yearly donation

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has been compelled to query the utilisation of N150million his administration has yearly donated to the legionnaires.

He said he was surprised that despite donating such amount of money yearly, the legionnaires were still appealing to him to build a befitting secretariat for them.

The governor spoke yesterday at the Government House in Port Harcourt at the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) Emblem Appeal Fund launching ceremony.

“Wike, in reaction to the request for the provision of secretariat for the Nigerian legion, wondered what the leadership of the legion did with the monetary support they received each year,” a statement by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said.

He said it remained puzzling that the legionnaires were unable to provide some basic operational facilities such as a secretariat for themselves.

The governor insisted that the Rivers State Government alone, within the last six years of his tenure, had donated not less than N150million to them annually.

He said if the resources were well managed, it would have provided them a secretariat without going hand-in-cap to the government.

He said: “If you check for the six years, I’ve launched this emblem with not less than N20 million every year. And check each January 15th, I have given you not less than N150million. So, when you calculate, you can have your own secretariat.”

The governor urged the Federal Government not to abandon its responsibility of catering for the welfare of men and officers of the security agencies in states.

Wike said the state governments were only providing necessary support.

He said that his administration would not relent in its support to men and officers of the military, who had fought to keep the country united.

Wike noted that although January 15th every year was the Remembrance Day in particular, the Emblem Appeal Fund Launch was organised earlier to raise money to support the Nigerian Legionnaires.

He said: “What we are merely doing is to support. What is the Federal Government doing for you? So, everything should not be left in the hands of the state.”

“The military is under the Federal Government, the police is under the Federal Government. So don’t shift responsibility of the Federal Government to states. What we are merely doing is to support.”

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, said every year, the event was organised to honour, appreciate and support war veterans and their dependents for their levels of sacrifice that they made as a duty to the nation.

He noted that as officers and men of the military, they gave their best to ensure that the civil populace continued to enjoy security and peace.

He said: “We may not know them all, but certainly, we owe them all. This is why His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers State, has always supported them in every way possible.”

Rivers State Chairman of Nigerian Legion ACG Justice Chichi esq. said patriotic citizens were gathered to consider how to continue ameliorating the harsh and unfriendly challenges that confronted legionnaires.

He urged Nigerians to spend the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in sober reflection of those sacrifices and renew commitment to the welfare of the veterans, widows and dependents of the fallen heroes in Rivers State.

Obaseki swears in 40 SAs, five SSAs

This followed the harmonisation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) members in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government.

The governor commended party leaders in the council for their political sagacity in organising the party in the area.

  • Community to protect refinery

    Community to protect refinery

Ibeno people in Akwa Ibom State have vowed to protect workers and property of BUA Refinery from threats arising from a land dispute with Eket Local Government.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, they said that the refinery to be sited in Ibeno would not be allowed to suffer, adding that they would, therefore, not tolerate trespass on the land.

The people of Eket and Esit Eket local governments last week issued a quit notice to BUA Refinery with claims that the land allocated for the proposed refinery belonged to Ekid people.

Ibeno people issued the warning in a rejoinder by the Joint Council of Mpono Nnito Ibeno and Ulok Ulok People Assembly, signed by Chief Ikoedem Ekong, Joint Council Chairman and Pastor Tom Samuel Afia, Joint Council Secretary, at Upenekang in Ibeno Local Government.

“Ibeno will never take up arms against Eket, but we will not fold our arms and watch the activities of miscreants in our land. If one leaf is taken from Ibeno into Eket, we will enter and collect 12 leaves.

“We will equally not permit one BUA personnel to be hurt or killed by Eket in the course of carrying out their legitimate construction work in Ibeno, which will be a blessing to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

“The people of Ekid will ignore our warning at their own peril. They had boasted that they would finish us off in 1993 before the government intervened. Perhaps this may be the opportunity to carry out this their long awaited yearning and desire. May they dare! “

“We know that the real problem of the Ekid people is the fear of the unknown, because they have nothing to offer in this great state other than making people to believe who and what they are not. But we also know that there is no developmental strides carried out anywhere in the state that will not have a constructive and positive impact on all people of the state,” the statement said.

Reacting to the Ekid people, who had queried the ancestry of the Ibeno people, the statement, which dwelt on the history of the people, insisted that Ekid migrated from Ibeno.

“The majority of the people admitted that their ancestors came from Ibeno many years ago. Their story begins with a civil war in Ibeno, a war which they called Nna. During this war, many people were driven out of Ibeno and their only avenue of escape was the North. The refugees, led by a man called Okpo Eti, fled to the North and settled in the country now occupied by the Eket clan,” the statement added.

The Ibeno people, who recalled regrettably that the drums of war recently sounded by the Eket people was same as they did before the communal crisis, which claimed many lives between Ibeno and Ekid people in 1993, urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to remain attentive to inciting utterances by communities in the state to maintain peaceful coexistence.

Diri to stakeholders: block revenue leakages in Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has urged civil servants and other stakeholders involved in revenue generation and collection to complement government’s efforts in blocking leakages in the system to improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He spoke yesterday at the Trade Union Congress (TUC) maiden public lecture and awards night at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said that the challenge of leakages in IGR was a source of concern to the state.

Lamenting the low IGR profile of Bayelsa, Diri advised stakeholders to see the task of blocking leakages in the system as a collective responsibility that must be done in the interest of the state.

While calling for synergy among stakeholders, the governor stressed the need to first identify the sources of leakages in the revenue chain with a view to plugging them.

He said Bayelsa State had only one major source of income and called for increased private sector support to enable the government succeed in diversifying the local economy to expand the state revenue base.

Diri, who described the relationship between his administration and labour as cordial, hailed the TUC and other labour unions for their patience and understanding in the face of the current harsh economic realities.

TUC Chairman Julius Laye praised the Diri administration for the prompt payment of salary, monthly disbursement of funds for the payment of gratuity arrears as well as approval and implementation of workers’ promotion to date.

Laye said the public lecture with the theme: ‘Blocking the Leakages in the IGR of Bayelsa State: The Role of Civil Servants’, was organised to enable stakeholders look inwards and take measures to help increase the state IGR.

Speaking as chairman of the occasion, Dr. Nimibofa Ayawei said the lecture was timely, given the decline in the volume of statutory allocations to the state.

Ayawei, represented by the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Treasury and Accounts, Mr. Timipre Seipulou, enjoined stakeholders to make the best out of the lecture by proffering solution to identified leakages.

High point of the event was the presentation of outstanding service awards to Governor Diri and his deputy, in recognition of their commitment towards workers’ welfare and the growth of TUC in the state.

    Edo youths disrupt NPDC operation

The protesting youths of Egbema in Ovia Northeast Local Government of Edo State yesterday disrupted the operation of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL).

The youth, led by Miyenpirigha Ebidouwei, however, succeeded in preventing entry into and exit from the flow station, with Ebidouwei saying the people of Egbema and other host communities were allegedly being marginalised by NPDC and Elcrest.

Group accuses security agents of extortion

A rights group, the Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi State branch, yesterday accused security agents of extorting motorists, travellers and other road users and subjecting them to suffering at checkpoints.

The Secretary, Mr. Jeremiah Onyibe, in a statement yesterday in Abakaliki, alleged that motorists are made to pay money by the security agents when they get to checkpoints on highways.

He lamented that passengers, including patients and elderly people, were forced to trek long distances from the checkpoints to where they were permitted to enter their buses and continue their journeys.

Onyibe listed the checkpoints as Onuebonyi bridge, Ezzamgbo checkpoint, Ebonyi/Enugu boundary checkpoint, among others.

The statement said: “With dismay, the attention of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi State branch, has been drawn to the abuse of human rights by security personnel, especially the police and soldiers, who mount roadblocks at checkpoints in Ebonyi State, at Onuebonyi bridge, Ezzamgbo and the boundary between Ebonyi and Enugu states.”

“These men derive joy in abusing our people by ordering every passenger, including patients, to come out of their buses and trek long distance before allowing them to re-enter their buses. Those riding motorcycles are forced to come down and roll their bikes for some time before being allowed to mount their motorcycles again.

“This practice enables them to extort the citizens. This inhumane treatment on the people by men of our security forces, whom we pay through our taxes, must be stopped.

“We are not against security agencies searching cars or passengers, but forcing every car to park and passengers to alight from their buses and trek a long distance is crude and outdated and should be stopped.

“We call on Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, the Commanding Officer 24 Support Engineers Regiment (SER), Nkwegu, Lt.-Col. A. M. Sa’ad and Police Commissioner Garba Aliyu to intervene.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra State chapter, yesterday gave N3million scholarship awards to 50 ‘most deserving students’.

It also rewarded 26 retired workers, who left the service between 2012 and 2020 with undisclosed cash and gift items.

Speaking at the award presentation, the union Chairman, Stephen Ufoaroh, said the programme, which was the second edition, was part of the union’s social responsibility to the students and their parents.

Ufoaroh said: “Although some academic officials of UNIZIK are owed salaries and promotion arrears, ASUU-NAU members still saw the need to help in alleviating the suffering of our students, who have also borne the pain of the ruling class’ insensitivity to the suffering of the masses.

“ASUU national is awarding a scholarship of N100,000 to the most deserving students in public universities in Nigeria for which a student of UNIZIK is a beneficiary.

“We pray and hope that the students will make use of this fund to pay their school fees, thereby giving your parents/sponsors relief for one academic session. We ask you to continue to be determined.”

ASUU-NAU President Emmanuel Osodoke, in his message presented by Uzo Onyebinama, praised the branch’s congress and successive leadership for the gesture, noting that the money would benefit the students.

One of the retirees, Prof. Ikenna Onyido, described the award as one of the best he had received.
