Centre lauds Tinubu for approving establishment of national forest guard system, recruitment of 130,000 armed operatives

    • Says initiative will reduce kidnappings, others across the country

The Country President of the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre UN-POLAC, Amb Peter Ohagwa has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the establishment of a national forest guard system and the recruitment of over 130,000 armed operatives to secure the country’s 1,129 forest reserves.

The initiative, approved during Monday’s expanded Federal Executive Council meeting, mandates each state to recruit between 2,000 and 5,000 forest guards based on their capacity.

The recruitment and training will be supervised by the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Environment.

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, Amb. Ohagwa described the development as timely intervention in the security reinforcement of the country aimed at protection of lives and property.

The UN-POLAC boss said the initiative would drastically reduce criminalities as well as kidnapping in boundary forests across the Federation which has become a safe haven for criminals.

He called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders towards effective actualisation of the initiative.

Ohagwa also said that local vigilantes in our various rural communities across the federation should be part of the formation and recruited with vigorous training towards improved service delivery.

It would be recalled that UN-POLAC Country President on 26th February 2025 during a one day national dialogue on promoting peace building and climate -smart agriculture as catalyst for economic growth and food security requested that the Federal Government considered the Rehabilitation or Re-establishment of Forest Security Corps in our forests to keep criminals and kidnappers away while providing a safe environment for famers and creating jobs for our teaming youths.

The statement said: “Furthermore, during the last Sallah celebration, when UN-POLAC felicitated with Muslim Faithfuls, this was captured as we commended the federal government move that made National Assembly to be committed in driving the force that made it possible for the push to pass second reading and now the President has stamped the Approval as well as deployment, is really commendable and a step in the right direction.”

He charged the office of the NSA and Federal ministry of Environment who are to oversee the effective implementation of the initiative to be proactive towards timely execution.

Civil Society Forum urges Tinubu to appoint loyal supporter Raymond Edoh to leadership role

The National Civil Society Forum of Professionals (NCSFP) has called on the federal government to consider appointing Dr. Raymond Edoh, a staunch supporter and political ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, into a leadership position within the current administration.

The appeal was made on Friday during a press conference held in Abuja, where the forum emphasized Edoh’s significant contributions to President Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking at the briefing, the President of the organisation, Alhaji Danjuma Harouna, described Dr. Edoh as a “loyal and worthy political son” of President Tinubu, stating that his unwavering support and dedication played a vital role in the president’s electoral success.

“One of these days, during our visit to Dr. Raymond Edoh, while listening to him, I and the delegation of the organization that went for the courtesy visit realized that he is not different from president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his optimism about Nigeria, his leadership charisma, passion to lead, wealth of knowledge and experience, and the most of them are his tactical brilliance in ideas on how insecurity can be curbed, poverty can be inhibted, and development can be achieved stresslessly including the windows to the fundings of the projects and programs.

“We further noticed how highly coordinated and determined he is about this nation in line with this administration’s agenda, and although he hasn’t been considered for any appointment, he assured us of Tinubu’s return in 2027, as according to him, he will throw his full political weight behind his father. No doubt, he is an influential young leader who has served and still serves in several capacities across political forums, youth movements and organisations, and international organisations.

“Dr. Raymond Edoh has continued to be a crusader of hope for greater Nigeria and Africa at large. He believes in empowering people and encouraging the younger ones to grow and become useful to their sundry societies through capacity building programs, empowerment of all kinds, financial donations in millions of Naira, mental sensitisation, lectures on basic moral orientation, national patrotism and security, to mention but a few.

“He also went further by telling us that he will continue to support his father, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, come what may, because he believes in him.

“However, he had earlier disclosed to us during his welcome address that he hopes to serve in this administration if given the opportunity, and what he plans to achieve for Nigerians is mind-blowing.”

Also speaking, the vice president, Hajia Juwairat Aliyu, stressed that Dr. Raymond Edoh is a disciplined young Nigerian full of humility and popularly known for his diligence to duty and integrity. “One of the best things that this administration would do amongst many others is to give Dr. Raymond Edoh an appointment in this administration. His prowess and doggedness are amazing, and I think President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR should see him worthy of an appointment to help in the achievement of the New Hope Agenda, “she said

Speaking further, Aliyu lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his resolve in making Nigeria’s economy better through the complete payment of the Nigerian IMF loan that has lingered for years.

Southeast Senators query JAMB’s exam glitch

The South East Senate Caucus have expressed worry over what it described as ‘curious and highly suspicious’ Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination glitch in some centres in Lagos and especially in the whole of South East in the 2025 exam circle.

The Caucus in a statement by its Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Saturday in Abuja, said it would be disheartening to contemplate such conspiracy theory, “that there is a narrow agenda being pursued to deliberately shortchange and harm the future of our children.”

Though, the Caucus, after a careful assessment of the reports of the ugly incident, noted with cautious optimism the efforts being made to mitigate the near disaster, particularly the rescheduling of the examination, but however warned that a future reoccurrence would be unacceptable.

Nonetheless, South East Senators, he added, welcomed the timely acceptance of fault as expressed through the open declaration of regret and tearful apology by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) management, particularly its Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede.

Notwithstanding, the South East lawmakers, according to Senator Abaribe, hope and warn that such a display of penitence in public would not be an effort to mask a future sinister agenda aimed at harming the educational advancement of children of the Southeast region.

“The so-called glitch, as curious and suspicious as it was, is enough to erode confidence and dangerously lower national pride among the future generation.

“The relevant national education drivers must recognise the inherent danger of injecting hateful politics and narrow parochial considerations into both policy enunciation and its implementations.

“That the glitch happened in the whole of South East raises pertinent questions that must be answered by JAMB to assuage the growing frustrations and fears among the people of the region, particularly the children who are directly at the receiving end. We must pursue a Nigerian agenda and not a narrow one that will ultimately injure national unity.

“Education remains one of the most important bedrocks of any society’s advancement. It is one major index of development in every facet of life that can never be faulted.

“Education is a major pivot that triggers national development. Every child is entitled to it, therefore, we must not play roulette with it,” Abaribe said.

Therefore, he said the South East Senate Caucus is on alert and under pressure as it unequivocally demands firm assurance from JAMB and other relevant national educational policy drivers that there will never be a recurrence of such scandalous glitch in the future.

Avoid bringing shame to Abia, Otti charges intending pilgrims

The governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has charged intending pilgrims from the state to avoid attracting shame to the state as they join their counterparts to participate in this year’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

This is as the state has announced that it has commenced the screening of intending pilgrims for the 2025 Christian pilgrimage.

Otti, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kenneth Kalu equally advised them to be good ambassadors of the state.

Flagging off the screening in Umuahia, the state capital, Otti emphasized the need for intending pilgrims to shun every behavior that could attract shame to the state but focus on their religious mission.

Otti lamented that the Abia contingents had not participated in the pilgrimage for the past few years, explaining that it was the value placed on the trip that made his administration reactivate the sponsorship of pilgrims.

The governor pointed out that the reduction in the number of those to be sponsored was necessitated by other competing needs in the state.

Earlier, Chairman of Abia State Christian Pilgrims Board, Emmanuel Agomuo, encouraged every person who would be successful in the screening to be a good ambassador of Abia while in Israel.

He, however, informed the intending pilgrims that filling of forms was not an automatic guarantee that they would make the trip, rather only those successfully screened.

YPP candidate Chukwuma raises the alarm over lawyer’s killing in Anambra

Sir Paul Chukwuma, the Governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Anambra State, has raised over the incessant killings in the state, especially, that of the lawyer from Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area by gunmen.

Ifeanyi Iloakasia, a lawyer, the President General of Aguleri community was killed along Agulu-Nanka Road in Anaocha Local Government Area alongside his client by yet to be identified gunmen.

Chukwuma, in a statement, made available to reporters in Awka, lamented the loss of lives to violent attacks in Anambra State, despite multiple security outfits set up by the administration of Prof Chukwuma Soludo.

He said that Soludo’s government should sit up instead of playing to the gallery, adding that the killings had become too much for anybody to bear

According to the YPP governorship candidate,  “The brutal execution of a budding, young, and promising legal professional and a community leader of good standing in the mold of Barr. Rolex Iloakasia, stands condemned in clear terms.

“I received the news with immense shock. This extremely painful loss signposts a dangerous descent into the state of nature of sorts, which has been going on in Anambra State.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Barr. Rolex, and the entire Aguleri community. It is shocking that some armed thugs can trail some people on their way in Anambra and open fire on them without consequence.

“This barbaric act is an attack on Anambra State, it is an attack on the future of Anambra State, it is an attack on all of us, and it must be completely condemned by all.

“The current government in Anambra State must live up to its duty of protecting the lives and properties of the people of Anambra State.

“We don’t have to wait for criminals to act before they are trailed and apprehended. We don’t have to allow criminals to overrun our state before we start to act.

“The government of Anambra State must therefore work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that criminals who have a free ride in Anambra State are rounded up and dealt with according to the law. The government must re-tune its strategy.

“I have now read a report that the perpetrators of this atrocious criminality had been apprehended or neutralized. If indeed so, then it gives a temporary respite, but government must sit up,” Chukwuma said.

  • Ibadan stakeholders reject move to make Alaafin permanent chair of Oyo Obas council

Ibadan stakeholders reject move to make Alaafin permanent chair of Oyo Obas council

Traditional leaders, elders, and prominent stakeholders from Ibadanland have opposed a legislative move by the Oyo State House of Assembly, seeking to make the Alaafin of Oyo the permanent chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and chiefs.

The opposition came from the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Ibadan Mogajis, the Ibadan Compounds Peace Initiative (ICPI), Baales, monarchs, and other notable sons and daughters of Ibadanland.

They warned that the proposal could disrupt the longstanding harmony among traditional institutions in the state.

At the heart of their concern is the proposed Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, which is currently at its second reading in the State Assembly.

The bill aims to permanently assign the chairmanship position to the Alaafin of Oyo, thereby ending the existing rotational leadership structure among traditional rulers in Oyo State.

Historically, the chairmanship was originally assigned to the Alaafin under the Council of Obas and Chiefs Law, Cap. 37, Laws of Oyo State, 2000, but was later amended to introduce a rotational system to reflect the diversity of the state’s traditional leadership.

In a joint statement, the president of the Ibadan Mogajis, Asimiyu Ariori, and the ICPI Coordinator, Nurudeen Akinade, expressed strong objections to the proposed change. They emphasised that Ibadan has never played second fiddle in the Yoruba traditional structure and has consistently acted as a protector of the Yoruba nation.

They cited historical examples, including Ibadan’s military resistance against external threats such as the Fulani expansion in the 19th century, as evidence of the city’s strategic importance and leadership role in Yorubaland.

The stakeholders urged the House of Assembly to maintain the rotational leadership system to preserve unity and respect among traditional rulers across the state.

“Chief Obafemi Awolowo wouldn’t have become the Premier of the Western region if not for the Ibadan People’s party that joined hands with the Action Group (AG) against the NCNC of Nnamdi Azikwe. By now, the free Education and infrastructure, industrial and other developmental efforts would have probably eluded Yorubaland.

“Ibadan has always been saving the Yoruba nation, there was never a time Ibadanland has been second in command to Oyo or any other town in Yorubaland. Ibadan should be made the permanent chairman of Oyo Obas.  The fact that we keep quiet doesn’t mean that we are fools.

“When Ibadan people do not claim to be the permanent chairman, why will Oyo Alaafin want to be so? The Oyo State House of Assembly will have itself to blame if the Tories’ obnoxious bill scales through.

“Former governor Christopher Alao Akala has approved the rotational Oyo Obas’ rotational chairmanship during his tenure as the governor of Oyo State, with HIM, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1 presiding over the Council meeting. Ibadan will not take it because we are always the number one in all affairs.”

  • Tinubu deserves second term, says Igbo community leader

Tinubu deserves second term, says Igbo community leader

The leader of the Igbo Community and Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu has commended Anambra Governor, Charles Soludo and the entire Ndi Anambra for endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for second term as well as his adoption as the candidate for the 2027 presidential election by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Eze Nwachukwu, who stated this while addressing reporters at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre on Nwachukwu Drive, Okota Lagos on Sunday, revealed that “as a strong member of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political dynasty since 1998, I and the Igbo Community which is the largest non-indigenous ethnic group in Lagos, will continue to mobilise the Igbo in Lagos for the electoral victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and at the federal level.”

The Igbo leader also praised Governor Soludo and the state’s traditional rulers for conferring on the President the traditional title of Dike Si Mba of Ndigbo (hero from another land).

Nwachukwu said the traditional title conferred on President Tinubu by the 197 traditional rulers led by the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi, resonates with the Ezinna of Ndigbo (good father of Ndigbo) chieftaincy title which the Igbo Community which he leads in Lagos State conferred on President Tinubu in 2004, adding that because of Tinubu’s love for the Igbo Community in Lagos, he elected to be Tinubu’s chief grassroots mobiliser for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election and re-election as the then Lagos State Governor.

Nwachukwu further stated that the Igbo Community, through his mobilisation strategy, has supported President Tinubu as governor and the ruling party till date.

On why President Tinubu should be voted for his second term in 2027, the leader of the Igbo Community in Lagos stated that “Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s achievements include his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007), where he initiated new road construction and received various awards for his leadership. He was recognised for improving the living environment and for his efforts in computerised governance system.

“At the national level, as president, Tinubu’s financial reforms have surpassed the 1986 structural adjustment programme (SAP) in his determination to overhaul the Nigerian economy and government finances drastically.

“Tinubu is transforming Nigeria through his Renewed Hope Agenda. Honest Nigerians will attest to the fact that he has and is evolving critical economic and political policies and programmes that were aimed at making Nigeria great again.

“We concede that Nigerians are going through tough economic and social situations. I am confident that the Tinubu administration is working hard to ameliorate the hardship by evolving policies and programmes to ensure that the economy bounces back, and the result will ameliorate Nigerians’ economic misery.”

In Anambra State, President Tinubu inaugurated some key projects, including the state’s Government House.

  • Natasha and the burden of proof

Natasha and the burden of proof

    By Mike Osumah

One of the elementary rules I first learnt in journalism school eons ago is that opinions are free but facts are sacred.

This time-honoured principle has therefore become my guiding light whenever I want to say or write anything- be it news bulletins, ad copies, commentaries, elevated gossips, random musings, warts and all!

And for any journalist worth his salt, you know you run the risk of libel and defamation if you publish untruths because under the law you cannot be spared- your victim can always get reprieve if he or she takes recourse in the law.

Indeed, yours truly started off with the above preamble advisedly because it speaks to the heart of the personality clashes between the Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing the Kogi Central.

It doesn’t bear repeating all the ugly, and I daresay salacious details already served to the public by the senator herself.

But it would be remiss of me not to inform Nigerians about the position of the law as it concerns the allegations raised by the senator in all the public appearances she has made.

Wait for this: there is a caveat; yours truly is not an interested party and neither am I obligated to any of the parties involved in this brouhaha. No. Like Mr. Ben Murray Bruce, widely known as Mr. Commonsense, I just want to make some sense out of this whole thing!

Now let’s take the issues apart and break them one after the other. With the benefit of hindsight apart from the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against Senator Akpabio, the festy lady at the upper legislative chamber also accused him of muder, organ harvesting; which in every material particular as the lawyers are wont to say, are clearly dastardly and criminal act in themselves.

Specifically, Senator Natasha, according to available information had engaged Sandra Duru, a United Kingdom (UK)-based activist, popularly known as Professor Mgbeke, and allegedly offered her  the sum of N200 million to falsely accuse Akpabio of organ harvesting.

The activist made the claim during a live Facebook session and said there are recordings where the suspended senator admitted having no evidence against the senate president.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has since denied the allegation, dismissing the live stream content as “untrue and manipulated”.

It would be recalled that in 2021, 26-year-old Iniubong Umoren, a female job seeker, went missing after meeting a Twitter user for a job opportunity in Akwa Ibom.

Uduak Umoh, a friend of Iniubong, announced her death after raising concerns about her disappearance.

Subsequently, the police operatives in Akwa Ibom arrested Uduak Akpan, a suspect, who allegedly confessed to sexually and physically assaulting the late Iniubong and burying her body in a shallow grave at his father’s house.

Akpan was convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to death by the Akwa Ibom high court on August 4, 2022.

Certainly, Natasha’s claims if indeed she made them, should not to be treated as just mere random musings by some crackpot who doesn’t know her left from right. No. The person making the claims and the victim are both public figures and as such owe us the responsibility of telling us the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

This is why as concerned citizens we all must not allow this case to suffer from the conspiracy of silence.

Thankfully, the family of the late Iniubong Umoren and legal experts are now considering legal redress against Senator Natasha for spreading what they call “defamatory and destabilising misinformation.”

Firing the first salvo, Ifiok Umoren, the elder sister of the late Iniubong Umoren, has refuted claims that the deceased organs were harvested following her murder in April 2021.

While addressing newsmen at a press conference last Saturday, in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, in response to recent claims by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, suspended senator representing Kogi central, that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was involved in harvesting Iniubong’s organ to save his wife, the deceased’s sister said no body part was missing from autopsy to burial.

Read Also: Court fixes June 27 for judgment in Natasha’s suit against Akpabio, others

Flanked by Friday Johnson Itim, Akwa Ibom’s Director of Public Prosecution, and Samuel Abdullah of the Legal Aid Council, Ifiok said the claim was a distortion of truth.

Ifiok described the allegation as “outrageous” and “deeply hurtful,” adding that she personally witnessed the autopsy, during which the internal organs were confirmed intact.

“How can someone claim that my sister’s organs were harvested when I was right there during the autopsy?” she queried.

“This accusation is not only false but also dishonours the memory of my sister and retraumatises our family.”

Ifiok recalled how Iniubong informed her of a job interview before she went missing and how she helped in tracing the suspect and alerting security agencies.

“After her death, the police took the body for autopsy at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital,” she said. “I was present. No organ was missing.”

Backing her position, Itim said the crime was committed solely by Akpan, who attacked Iniubong after she refused unprotected sex.

“He killed her in anger, buried her in a shallow grave and fled,” he said.

“His arrest was made possible through help from his family and the local council chairman.

Also, Abdullah said the allegation of organ trafficking did not come up at any point during court proceedings.

“Neither the prosecution nor defence ever mentioned Senator Akpabio,” he said.

“The autopsy report is available to the public and shows that all organs were intact.”

Emeka Nwafor, the pathologist who conducted the autopsy, testified under oath in 2021 that though the corpse showed signs of trauma and decomposition, there was no indication of organ removal.

Clearly, with the way things have panned out thus far, it does appears that Senator Natasha would literally need to “explain taya” to borrow the popular street lingo.

That indeed is the burden of proof, which in the legal contexts, refers to the obligation to establish the truth of a factual assertion.

This principle is often expressed in the Latin phrase “ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat,” meaning “the burden of proof rests on who asserts, not on who denies”.

Pray, who’ll help Madam Distinguish Natasha to unbundle the burden of proof?

The answer I daresay is hanging in the air.

•Osumah, a public affairs commentator, writes from Lagos
