Imo community counts losses after raid

Some victims of weekend’s raid by security operatives on oil bunkerers at Izombe community in Oguta Local Government of Imo State have decried the attack as “unwarranted’’.

They said yesterday in interviews that they incurred great losses in the raid.

Two security operatives and a resident were feared killed in the raid, while more than 70 houses were razed following a squabble between youths who were collecting tolls from oil bunkerers in the community.

Some victims were yesterday seen standing helplessly in their buildings destroyed beyond repair.

Speaking about the incident, the traditional ruler of Aborsi-Izombe, Eze Pius Muforo, said the government should investigate the cause of the incident.

“I gathered that one youth and two security operatives were killed.

“It was very condemnable that human lives were lost in the incident. I sympathise with the bereaved families,’’ he said.

He also expressed concern about increasing oil bunkering in the area and urged the government to find urgent ways of stopping the activity in the area.

He appealed to the government to find ways to meaningfully engage the teeming youths in the area to deter them from the nefarious activity.

A victim, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Onyeukwu, who described the incident as a “tragedy’’ and a “big loss’’, said the community had never experienced such attack.

“It was like a war situation. They came here with about 30 Toyota Hilux vans and three war tanks. I hid myself in the bush watching from a distance how they destroyed our buildings.

“We lost everything including clothes, phones, electrical appliances and money.

“My cousin lost more than N500,000 cash, while his wife also lost some money belonging to a church group to which she belongs.

“I am not part of the illegal bunkering business going on in the area, but I am surprised that the problem caused by few individuals affected me and virtually everyone in the village,’’ he said.

Onyeukwu urged Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to visit the area to ascertain the level of damage caused and assist the victims.

Another victim, Mr. Victus Nwadikwa, a retired driver who worked at the Court of Appeal, said he and his brothers lost three cars and two buildings to the attack.

“On Friday morning, I left my home to Mbaise, I later received calls that there was trouble at Izombe and I should not return home.

“I returned on Saturday to discover that three cars in my compound had been burnt; my house and that of my brother have been burnt as well.

“We couldn’t save anything from the houses. Now, all my sweat over the years have been turned to rubbles,” he lamented.

Nwadikwa, who said since retirement, he relied on his pension and sales from his farm produce, also appealed to the government to assist victims.

“I know that a youth and two security operatives were killed, but the security operatives overreacted,” he added.

Contacted, Capt. Joseph Akubo, Army Public Relations Officer at 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, near Owerri, declined comments.

Also contacted, the spokesman for the Nigerian Police in Imo, CSP Mike Abattam, directed The Nation to the Army Public Relations Office.

“My advice is that you meet the military Public Relations Officer. He will give you more information about that,’’ Abattam said.

Okechukwu, who is a member of the APC National Campaign Council for Anambra State Governorship Election, told reporters in Abuja yesterday that APGA leaders should know that it is far better to be late than to be the late.

The VON boss insisted that APGA was on the way to losing its first governorship contest in Anambra State after 16 years.

“It is for this reason that I wish to appeal once more to APGA leaders to explore a Zikist Model merger with APC for a guaranteed seamless victory in the November 6 polls. In saying this, I know for sure that APC can win without APGA but would enjoy the seamless victory with a Zikist Model merger,” he said.

Ayade, 18 council chiefs, commissioners expected back from France

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade is expected back in the country later in the week after what he described as a business trip to France.

He went ahead of his enlarged entourage, which included 18 local government chairmen, House of Assembly speaker and principal officers of the House, as well as some commissioners like the commissioner for Agriculture and that of Local Government Affairs.

There was no official statement on the governor’s overseas trip, but information from sources said the trip was about an international summit on livestock business and agro industrial expo in France.

A video shared on social media handles showed Prof. Ayade exchanging pleasantries with members of his entourage on a cattle farm. He was captured saying: “We need each chairman to decide what you want to do in your local government. It’s either you are growing cattle or you are supplying grass, because if you don’t have a good climate for cattle rearing, you can be a major grass supplier. There are lines of livestock chains.

So, you as chairmen of local governments have the duty and responsibility to get some of these (pasteur) at a young age, apply to get government support.

mit in France is to improve the food chain, mineral production and land conservation to support climate conditions in Cross River State.

The governor and his entourage were also seen in a picture as he led them to a Bam-bou village in Montpelier, France.

  • INEC faces hurdles over 10,000 ad hoc workers

INEC faces hurdles over 10,000 ad hoc workers

Despite its readiness with logistics for the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing hurdles over the recruitment of 10,000 ad hoc workers for the poll.

There had been poor response by ad hoc workers who will conduct the poll because of the security situation, especially the activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state.

It was gathered that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was taking precautionary measures to avoid exposing its members to killings by gunmen.

NYSC was weighing possible options last night, including how to provide tight security for corps members who will participate in the poll.

It was learnt that INEC has been holding a series of consultations with the police and other security agencies on how to protect polling units and voters across the state.

For transparency and a faster process, INEC has also concluded plans to use Bimodal Voter Accreditation Device (BVAD) for the election.

BVAD will combine two modes of voter verification: fingerprint and face biometrics for voter’s identity verification.

But recruitment of election officials appeared to be top on the agenda of the electoral commission.

According to records, INEC in May increased the polling units in Anambra State from 4,608 to 5,720 with about 10,000 ad hoc workers required for the governorship poll.

The online registration for the recruitment of ad hoc workers ended on October 3 with what a source called “poor response”.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The security situation in Anambra State is hindering the engagement of ad hoc workers. We need about 10,000 of such workers but the number is yet to add up.

“INEC is ready with all logistics and equipment for the poll except the full complement of ad hoc workers needed for the governorship election.

“The commission is looking at how to overcome this problem. Once the security challenges or implications are addressed, INEC will be able to manage the situation within a short time.”

Another source said the NYSC, which used to be the primary source of ad hoc workers, was weighing several options.

The source said: “When we had a session with NYSC, there was the initial assurance that there was enough number of corps members for the election.

“The same NYSC is now weighing options on the participation of corps members, including precautionary measures to avoid exposing these youths to gunmen or IPOB’s militant wing called Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“So, it is not a straightforward calculation from the NYSC. The main task at hand is how to get enough ad hoc workers.”

It was gathered last night that INEC would use BVAD for the election.

According to a National Commissioner of INEC, the same BVAD was used for Isoko South 1 State Constituency by-election in Delta State, which was about 97 per cent efficient.

The commissioner, who spoke in confidence, said: “BVAD will make the accreditation process faster and easier. It is an upgrade of our technology to improve the electoral process.

“We recorded about 97 per cent efficacy in the by-election in Delta State House of Assembly. For a sensitive poll like Anambra governorship, this new technology will be good. We want a transparent election beginning with the accreditation of voters.”

Details on BVAD from INEC are as follows: It will “combine two modes of voter verification: fingerprint and face biometrics for voter’s identity verification.

“BVAD system is a multifunctional integrated device that will serve different layers of purposes for different activities in the process of adding value to the elections in Nigeria.

“The all-in-one technology will serve as the INEC’s Voter Enrolment Device (IVED) during the commission’s voter registration exercise. It will also serve as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter accreditation on Election Day, replacing the Smart Card Readers.

“Finally, it will serve as INEC’s Result Viewing Device (IReV Device) which will be used for uploading election results on Election Day.”

Speaking recently on BVAD, INEC chairman Prof. Mamood Yakubu said: “We introduced the BVAS for efficient human recognition through a biometric verification mechanism using both fingerprint and facial recognition of voters. The result of the pilot in the 84 polling units was very encouraging indeed.

“It took an average of just one minute for the device to correctly locate the voter in the system and another two minutes to authenticate a voter. In terms of the ruggedness of the device and its battery life, no single BVAS was replaced due to the discharge of the battery throughout the voting period.

“Most importantly, the device guaranteed the credibility of voter accreditation by preventing the incidents of multiple voting or the use of stolen PVCs to vote. All voters were accredited electronically using the BVAS. The use of the incident form was eliminated. The Isoko South 1 State Constituency by-election was historic in this respect.”

Anambra poll: Why we prefer Andy Uba – indigenes in US

Indigenes of Anambra state in the United States of America have thrown their wieght on the candidacy of the All Progressive Congress (APC) flagbearer, Sen. Andy Uba in the November 6 governorship election in Anambra state.

The group under the platform of USA Partner Senator Andy Uba said the APC candidate has what it takes to govern the state in terms of wealth of knowledge and experience.

Addressing reporters yesterday, State Coordinator of the group, David Umeh said the choice of Uba to other candidates was also informed by his financial capacity to fund his campaign, describing his co-contestants as ‘baby politicians’.

He explained that the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) had lost relevance in the state occasioned by bad governance, saying the so-called airport legacy project would not be completed at the expiration of the present administration.

“This time around, it will be a walkover, particularly with the defections of other party members to APC, including 6 House of Assembly APGA members, 3 federal House of Reps members, a PDP Senator, BOT PDP member, Ikpeazu and others.

“The airport the governor is boasting will be ready before the election is not possible. Election will come and go and the airport will remain the way it is. It’s Andy Uba that will commission it. The same with the International Conference Centre.

“Anambraians living in US have a resolution that they want someone who will make Anambra great again. After their several meetings, they found Andy worthy. In US, we call them Super-Coordinators, headed is Dr. Chike Orama. ”

Man petitions IGP, alleges unlawful seizure of N63m property

Mr. Friday Egboreshare of Agbarho community, Ughelli North local government area of Delta state, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police and Attorney General of the Federation over unlawful seizure of N63m paid property purchased from Salis Ventilated Homes Limited.

Egboreshare who lamented while speaking to newsmen, said Salis Ventilated Homes of No. 4 Gashua close, Area 8, Garki, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, had on 17th Nov., 2020, sold a property described as plot 433, Cadastral Zone CO2 Gwarimpa 1, Block 8A, B, C&D of three bedroom flats, Abuja, at N63million, including legal fee to Dr. Micheal Uadiale and Dr. (Mrs.) Enojare Uadiale.

The full payment of the property according to Egboreshare was made through transfer on 16th and 17th November 2020, by the agent to Salis Ventilated Homes, including a legal fee which amount to N63million with a receipt of payment and deed issued and signed by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Saliu Abubakar.

He emphasised that in the receipt of payment, it was stated clearly by Salis Ventilated Homes Limited, that the buyer has paid all fees in regard to the property, but expressed surprised when the firm came up with an untrue story that the buyer was still owing N26million after a deed of purchase showing the amount of N60milion had been signed and sealed by both parties.

Egboreshare said the press briefing became necessary to inform the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General of the Federation, security agents and other relevant authorities to intervene over the inexplicable action of Salis Ventilated Homes Limited holding back their property when they have met all obligations as to the purchase of the property.

“In a letter dated 17th November, 2020, sent to Dr. Micheal Uadiale and Dr. Enojare Uadiale by the MD/CEO, Alhaji Saliu Abubakar said he has granted their application and letter of allocation for three bedroom flat (Block 8A, B, C, D) (Carcass), with description at Salis Court, Plot 433, Gwarimpa 1, Cadastral Zone COS, FCT, Abuja with a purchase sum of N60,000.”

Contacted over the allegations, the MD/CEO of Salis Ventilated Homes, Alhaji Saliu Abubakar said the firm never seized any property or deny the transaction but said the property they later offered was three bedroom flats against the initial two bedroom flats transaction between his Executive Director, Benedict R. O. and their agent, hence the demand for additional 20million.

Diri seeks monarchs’ cooperation to fight crime

The Bayelsa State Government has restated its readiness for greater collaboration with traditional rulers to build a more secure and peaceful state.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made this known on Saturday during separate meetings with traditional rulers from Brass and Sagbama local government areas in Government House, Yenagoa.

He pointed out that the Douye Diri administration had an irrevocable commitment to revamp the traditional institution, to give them the needed impetus to perform their role as agents of peace and development.

Ewhrudjakpo informed the royal fathers that the local government councils had been directed to pass bye-laws that would legalize the setting up of vigilance groups in all the LGAs of the state in view of the growing security concerns.

While soliciting the cooperation of the traditional rulers, he clarified that the funding of the vigilantes would be jointly done by the state government and the local government councils.

According to him, government has also directed councils to enact bylaws banning the movement of speed boats without official security permit along the rivers and creeks within the state after 7pm.

Responding to some complaints bordering on inter-local government boundary disputes in the state, Ewhrudjakpo called on all communities having boundary issues to forward them to the Bayelsa State Boundary Committee for arbitration.

To this end, he directed the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Development to get the monthly security meeting reports from the eight councils and convey same to his office accordingly.

In their separate remarks, the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete Spiff, and the Ibenanaowei of Ibeni-Oyiakiri, King Joshua Igbagara, thanked the Deputy Governor for the regular meetings held with traditional rulers in all the LGAs across the state.

Also speaking, the Commander of NNS Soroh, Commodore Peter Effah, said the Nigerian Navy was taking proactive steps to beef up security in the waterways following the flag-off of “Exercise Still Waters” in the state.

  • Security operatives nab three for car burglary, theft in Bayelsa

Security operatives nab three for car burglary, theft in Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Vigilante Service (BSVS) says the outfit has arrested three suspected criminals in connection with car burglary and copper wires theft in the state.

The Chairman of the BSVS, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, said on Saturday that the service apprehended an 18-year-old Matthew Izibefiezem, who specialised in stealing copper wires and subsequently sold them to scrap dealers in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Alagba said the suspect after stealing the copper wires usually sold them to a scrap dealer, one Mr. Bubarak Abdulahi, a northerner residing in the state.

He said luck ran out on them when the duo had a misunderstanding over price and payment.

He said the development raised suspicion among residents who informed the outfit that led to their arrest.

Alagba said as a result of series of complaints from residents about the activities of scrap scavengers and number of arrested criminals associated with them, the outfit had seen the need to check and verify those who engage in scrap scavenging and buying in the state.

He added that some dealers in the scraps business encouraged the high level of stealing and criminal activities that are being recently witnessed in the state.

He said: “If you want to sell scrap metals or own a scrap dump, be ready to prove you don’t have criminal record.

“The new rule is an attempt to curb the recent increase in stealing associated with dealers in scraps.”

Alagba also said the outfit arrested one Lotana Ifeogbunam from Anambra State, who was caught along the Imiringi Road while trying to burgle a Lexus Jeep in a bid to steal the battery of the vehicle.

“The suspect, according to residents of the area specialises in stealing vehicle batteries. After he has stolen them, he sells them to scrap dealers in the state,” he stated.

Alagba said the three suspects had been handed over to the Anti-kidnapping Department of the Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command.
