Socialists applaud Tinubu economic policies, development initiatives

The Socialist Liberation Movement (SLM), a coalition of 100 civil society organisations, has expressed support for the economic policies of the Bola Tinubu administration, noting that these initiatives are beginning to positively impact the lives of everyday Nigerians.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja on Monday, the movement’s convener, Dr. Agabi Emmanuel, commended the administration’s proactive approach to addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Emmanuel highlighted key policies such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, which he said have shown promise in restoring confidence in the nation’s economy.

The establishment of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC) and the Economic Management Team Emergency Taskforce (EET) also received praise for strengthening Nigeria’s economic governance structures.

According to the SLM, the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, including roads, railways, and energy projects, is commendable.

These efforts, implemented through public-private partnerships, are expected to reduce transportation costs and improve access to markets across the country.

Emmanuel also acknowledged significant strides in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. Initiatives such as the Digital Nigeria program, which focuses on broadband expansion and supporting tech startups, were lauded for driving innovation, boosting financial inclusion, and creating new job opportunities.

“The Tinubu administration’s emphasis on agricultural transformation was another key point of praise. Programs like the Food Security and Agricultural Mechanization Programme and the National Agriculture Growth Scheme-Agro-pocket have been identified as having the potential to increase food production and reduce dependence on imports.

“Overall, the SLM emphasized that these economic policies and initiatives are beginning to yield tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, signaling a brighter future for Nigeria’s economy.

“After an extensive scrutiny of some of the policies introduced by the present administration, It was observed that President Bola Tinubu has taken steps to restore confidence in the economy by reducing inflation, stabilizing the foreign exchange market, and improving fiscal management,” the statement added.

He stated: “He has also invested in infrastructure development, such as roads, railways, and energy projects, to support economic growth.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration is prioritizing the digital economy, driving innovation and financial inclusion through initiatives like the Digital Nigeria program. This flagship program aims to enhance digital literacy, employability, and economic growth, while boosting GDP, entrepreneurship, and job creation.

“By investing in digital technology, empowering small businesses, and creating opportunities across sectors, President Tinubu seeks to leverage digital transformation to reduce poverty and improve living standards.

“With commitments to training three million youths in digital technology and creating one million new tech jobs, the administration is poised to unlock Nigeria’s digital potential and drive sustainable economic growth.

“The Bola Tinubu administration has implemented transformative initiatives to boost Nigeria’s agricultural sector, prioritizing food security and economic growth. Notably, the Food Security and Agricultural Mechanization Programme aims to enhance food production and reduce import reliance.

“Additionally, the National Agriculture Growth Scheme-Agro-pocket provides training, certified inputs, and subsidized irrigation equipment to millions of farmers, increasing productivity and incomes.

“President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the agriculture sector underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing sectoral challenges, while initiatives like the Green Imperative Programme and partnerships with international organizations further demonstrate the government’s dedication to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has introduced transformative policies to revitalize Nigeria’s health sector, demonstrating a commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and increasing access to quality services.

“Key initiatives include the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which has mobilized $2.2 billion in external financing, and the redesigned Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to enhance access to essential healthcare services.

“Additionally, the National Health Insurance Authority Act (NHIAA) aims to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by mandating health insurance for all Nigerians, while programs like the National Health Fellows Programme and prioritized domestic health financing further underscore the administration’s dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“In the educational sector, President Bola Tinubu has introduced several education policies aimed at transforming Nigeria’s education sector. One notable initiative is the “#WeAreEqual” campaign, which promotes inclusive education, skill development, and gender equity.

“Additionally, President Tinubu has launched the Student’s Loan scheme to ensure that every eligible child gets quality higher education in Nigeria with the overarching objective to improve education outcomes, increase access to quality education, and promoting gender equity in the education sector.

“President Bola Tinubu’s budget policy prioritizes national defense and internal security, job creation, macro-economic stability, investment environment optimization, human capital development, poverty reduction, and social security. Key initiatives include overhauling the internal security architecture, and promoting public-private partnerships to leverage private capital for infrastructure projects.

“In our considered opinion, President Bola Tinubu has embarked on a promising trajectory towards translating our hopes and aspirations into tangible realities, demonstrating a commitment to transformative governance and economic development.

Crisis: Royal family begs governor to release 86-year-old blind monarch, son

The family of the traditional ruler of Akpakwume Ancient Kingdom in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State has appealed to Governor Peter Mbah, to release the detained monarch of the kingdom, Igwe Ekwueme Odenigbo, and his son, Moses Ekwueme.

The monarch and his son were remanded for alleged conspiracy to commit arson, promoting local war, assault on police officers on lawful duty, and malicious property damage, amongst other charges.

But, the family, who spoke through Pastor Solomon Ekwueme and Ozioma Roseline Ekwueme, the monarch’s first son and daughter, said the monarch and their brother were not connected to the crisis that led to the recent burning of the house of Chief Livinus Okolo in the community.

“It is truly heartbreaking for us to be called back to Enugu with the news that our aged and blind father, a retired elder in the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the king of an entire community, has been locked up by the Nigerian Police and charged to a Magistrate Court and subsequently sent to the prison at the behest of a man that has been nothing short of a terror to the entire people of Akpakwume community, Mr Livinus Okolo Alias Zion,” they said.

They recalled that their father was brought to Enugu for medical attention after his palace was attacked by hoodlums who stole his office staff of office, certificate of recognition, and money on December 23rd, 2024.

“As a result of this issue that happened on the 23rd of December, our parents were brought to Enugu for medical checkups and treatment. After spending a couple of days in the hospital, they returned home.”

The family added that Mr Livinus Okolo’s house was subsequently razed by an angry mob following the arrest of a community leader, who was the Onowu-elect, Chief Marius Ezeanyanwu.

They continued, “Kindly note that before Mr. Livinus’ house was burnt, our father and mother returned to Enugu upon the doctors’ request for another round of tests with regards to the December 23rd incident. They were not in the village at the time this incident took place. Our father is a peace-loving man and has never encouraged any sort of violence in all his years as the ruler of our community.

“While In Enugu, On Thursday, 9th January 2025, the Nigerian Police invited our father to come with our brother Moses Ekwueme for questioning because of a petition they received from Chief Livinus Okolo with regards to the burning of his house. When they got to the Force CID, they made their statements exactly as the issue happened.”

  • 2027: Otti has no plan to join APC – Labour Party

2027: Otti has no plan to join APC – Labour Party

The Labour Party leadership has said Abia Governor, Alex Otti has no plan to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Obiora Ifoh, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

NAN reports that rumours have been rife over plans by no fewer than five first term opposition governors to defect to APC, preparatory to the 2027 general elections.

The governors, according to media reports, are Alex Otti of Abia, Peter Mba, Enugu; Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta; Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers and Umoh Eno, Akwa Ibom.

While Mbah, Fubara, Eno, Oborevwori are PDP governors, Otti belongs to Labour Party, with both parties currently locked in post-2023 election crises.

Ifoh, in the interview, however, said that the purported plan by Otti to dump LP for APC was farther from the truth.

“It is a mere rumour and I hope it remains so. For us in Labour Party, we are in touch with our governor, Dr Alex Otti, and he has assured us that he is not going anywhere, ahead of 2027.

“We believe that he will stay with us, irrespective of some of the issues which we are working hard to resolve,” he said.

The national publicity secretary, who said that defection from one political party to another was nothing new in any democratic setting, however, said that Otti was not thinking about teaming up with the ruling APC.

“The courts have come up several times to make interpretation as regards Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution and many people who had defected at one time or the other had been challenged in court.

“So, if five governors are planning to defect, it won’t be a new thing, as it had happened in the past,” he said.

Ifoh attributed the rumoured defection to the fact that some governors in the opposition had been having some challenges in controlling their states.

He insisted that the speculated rumour of the only Labour Party governor had no substance or validity.

“We are good in Labour Party and our governor is with us, and we are hoping that by 2027, we will have more governors in our fold,” he said.
NAN recalls that a recent media report indicated that the body language of some governors, particularly from PDP was tilting toward moving to the ruling APC.

The report further indicated that some of the governor have either been visiting President Bola Tinubu privately or have him inaugurating projects in their states.

It was also reported that the Chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, had been wooing the opposition governors to join APC.

Senator hailed for uplifting constituents’ economic standard

The Lawmaker representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial District, Ken Eze, has been hailed for his numerous poverty alleviation programmes for members of his Constituency.

Speaking to Journalusts in Abakaliki, a Labour Leader,  Ikechukwu Nwafor and a Rights Activist, Barr Steve Ugama said the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator’s empowerment programms has impacted positively on the standard of living of his constituents.

Mr Nwafor, a former State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) noted that the Senator in the latest empowerment distributed various items which will help uplift the economic standard of the people and the Constituency.

He listed the items to include:  four Toyota Corolla cars, four mini buses, two Toyota Sienna buses and 22 tricyces, 14 refrigerators, 64 grinding machines, 100 motorcycles and and 65 sewing machines.

Mr Nwafor, who was the Chairman of the empowerment committee noted that the empowerment was equitably distributed among the four local government areas.

He said: ‘The materials were distributed to people who actually needed it. This will have great economic impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and their families as it will boost the businesses of the beneficiaries.

Mr Ugama hailed the transparency with which the distribution was carried out.

He also hailed the lawmaker for helping to secure over 60 job opportunities for some of the constituents.

” I witnessed firsthand, direct beneficiaries, people who have no connection with him. Of particular interest for me was a young lady who said she learnt tailoring but did nothave the money to purchase the sewing machine to start.

“I approached the Senator and said these are the kind of people that should benefit from this. And he approved it immediately. The economic impact of this cannot be over-emphasized.

“If someone has been jobless for a long time and is given a tricycle that is worth over 5 million naira for him to start up life, it will help him if he is diligent enough.

“Now one other thing that I observed that is of particular interest to me, was a group of selected young men who came to thank him for giving them federal appointments.

“One of them, came with his wife, his two kids, and his parents. When I interviewed him, he said he had graduated for years and had nothing doing. But he reached out to the senator, sent his CV to him, and he got a job. He is presently serving in one of the firms in Port Hacourt. So that is a big boost to him and his  family”, Mr Ugama added.

  • Ndokwa nation must produce Delta North Senator in 2027 – Nwaoboshi

Ndokwa nation must produce Delta North Senator in 2027 – Nwaoboshi

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi has reaffirmed the commitment to the existing zoning arrangement in Delta North Senatorial District, declaring that it is the turn of the Ndokwa Nation to produce the next senator in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with journalists, the seasoned politician and former Delta State PDP chairman emphasized the need for fairness, equity, and adherence to the established rotational framework.

According to Nwaoboshi, the senatorial seat in Delta North has historically rotated among the Ndokwa, Ika, and Aniocha-Oshimili blocs, each serving for 12 years.

“With Aniocha-Oshimili completing its term, equity demands that Ndokwa Nation takes its turn. I was part of the team that upheld this arrangement in the past, and I remain committed to ensuring its continuity,” he stated.

Tracing the history of power rotation in Delta North, Nwaoboshi recalled that the late Senator Patrick Osakwe of Ndokwa Nation served three terms from 1999 to 2015 before stepping aside to allow Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa of the Ika bloc to emerge.

Okowa served in the Senate before becoming governor for eight years, further solidifying the rotational arrangement.

“The principle of equity guided our decisions in the past, ensuring that every bloc had its turn. This arrangement has brought stability to Delta North politics, and it must be upheld,” Nwaoboshi said.

He reiterated his commitment to respecting the zoning agreement, adding that it would be morally wrong for any bloc to seek to retain the position after completing its turn.

Addressing the internal crisis in the Delta APC, Nwaoboshi criticized the Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor-led Reconciliation Committee, accusing it of creating further divisions within the party.

He described proposals such as the creation of a “Leadership Council” and a co-chair arrangement between Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and a serving minister as unconstitutional and counterproductive.

“The party must adhere to its constitution. Creating structures outside the constitution is a recipe for chaos. The proposal to have Senator Omo-Agege co-chair with a minister is illogical and undermines the party’s hierarchy,” he said.

Nwaoboshi urged party members to prioritize unity and fairness, emphasizing the need for Delta North to produce the next APC state chairman following Delta South’s tenure.

“Equity must prevail within the APC. Denying Delta North this right will only deepen divisions,” he warned.

As the 2027 general elections approach, Nwaoboshi underscored the importance of zoning in fostering inclusivity and stability in Delta North politics, calling on party members to uphold fairness and work collectively to strengthen the APC in Delta State.

“If we must build a stronger APC, we must set aside personal interests and focus on equity, unity, and the party’s collective success,” he concluded.

  • Obi Cubana urges Oba indigenes to support new monarch, calls for unity

Obi Cubana urges Oba indigenes to support new monarch, calls for unity

Nigerian socialite and businessman Obi Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana, has urged Oba indigenes worldwide to rally behind the new monarch, Igwe Augustine Chinedu Emelobe, Eze Okpoko II, in a bid to elevate the Oba community to greater heights.

Cubana also appealed to aggrieved members of the community to set aside differences for the overall development of the Oba Kingdom.

He made this plea during a New Year homage to the monarch, accompanied by his brother, politician Ikenna Iyiegbu, alongside Tochukwu Adimora and Hon. Uche Mmaduekwe.

Obi Cubana joined numerous individuals, groups, and organizations that have visited Igwe Emelobe’s residence to pay homage and extend their congratulations.

Igwe Emelobe, who was elected as the new monarch in December 2024 and crowned by Oba elders later that month, has continued to receive goodwill messages and support from various quarters.

He said: “We have gathered in the name of God and selected an Igwe. God has approved of him, and we stand behind him. If anyone is aggrieved, he should forgive. Oba has to move forward, Oba must move forward, anyone feeling aggrieved should forgive, let’s move on. Oba is greater than these pockets of fights that have been ongoing, and Oba needs to develop.

“By this time next year, Oba will be a rallying point and others will come here to admire our community, our people, our traditions and culture, our food, our carnivals, our Ifejioku, our hotels. Oba is going to be great again,” he enthused.

Earlier, the business mogul, who is a son of Oba, had told the monarch that he came to show unbridled and unflinching support for his emergence so that Oba may take its place and pride in the affairs of Anambra communities.

He noted: “But the special grace of God, every son and daughter of Oba are proud of this land. Our brothers and sisters chose you to bring back some certain values of our land. This is a land that one shows pride in.

“I was in Ozubulu yesterday and there were some things that young people like us were instituting in the community, and I said to myself, this should be Oba. We should be tied to certain kinds of developments. There were roads, lock-up shops, and competition for development. Our neighbouring towns are competing to outdo one another on developments; we can’t let ourselves be held down. Let the young people of good parenting be part of what you are doing. Let whatever is tied to you be good in terms of truthfulness, let them be people who speak and whose opinions are respected, and let them be role models.

“We need to measure with some of these towns. When I went to one town’s convention in Houston, no one was trying to show off their doctorate and level in life but donned their traditional regalia. It’s only our place that it seems only old men are ichies and chiefs.

“Let the young ones get these titles and let them get it based on character, and let the world know the terms that were used to attain it.

“I trust you in terms of capacity to bring the kind of development worthy of emulation to our people, if you could do it in the oil sector, then you can do it for us.

“Oba has everything that can be galvanized to make it the envy of every other town in not just Anambra, but in all of Igboland. We have the manpower, we have the raw materials, men who think positively. The important thing is that, in the selection of these things, character is number one, before any other thing.

Also in his speech, Ikenna Iyiegbu told the monarch that although the town was an object of mockery in the past, the story has changed now, after his election into office as Igwe.

“People used to mock Oba, that we don’t have an Igwe, but the other day, it came up at a meeting where I met the governor and I told them that the situation has changed, that today, we have an Igwe. For the past six years, Oba has had no representation in terms of Igwe, and when other monarchs are invited to Awka, we are ashamed because Oba has no representation. It’s a thing of joy today that it has changed.

“I have not been too happy about what I have seen in the media. Let’s reconcile. The losers or winners, we are all brothers and we should inculcate everyone. What can we do for our Oba that will attract the great and mighty across Anambra State? What admirable action can we take that the whole state will hear and be in awe?

In his response, the monarch thanked the visitors for their support and pledged to give the community the best in terms of quality service as a leader.

SERHA urges South-East leaders to embrace unity for growth

In a bid to foster economic progress and social development in the South-East, the South-East Renewed Hope Agenda (SERHA) has appealed to political leaders in the region to prioritise collaboration with the federal government.

The call was made during an empowerment programme in Owerri, Imo State, where SERHA emphasized the need for unity and a shift from opposition politics to secure tangible benefits for the region.

Belusochukwu Enwere, the coordinator of SERHA, stressed that aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s administration would ensure the South-East receives the dividends of democracy more effectively.

He urged leaders in the region to work together with the federal government to achieve impactful development.

“We call on political leaders of South-East extraction to provide guidance and support to rally around the administration of President Bola Tinubu for effective leadership in the country,” Enwere said.

Enwere commended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, highlighting local government autonomy and tax restructuring as measures that would enhance grassroots development and alleviate the burden on businesses.

He encouraged Nigerians to support these initiatives, noting their potential to drive long-term economic growth.

The empowerment programme, according to Enwere, reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda’s objective of connecting citizens to government policies and providing them with measurable benefits.

“The first phase of the empowerment program provided financial support as follows: 100 SMEs received ₦200,000 each; another 100 individuals received ₦100,000 each; 200 SMEs were given ₦50,000 each; and 500 indigent families received ₦20,000 each,” Enwere explained.

In addition to financial aid, the initiative distributed tools such as sewing machines, grinding machines, and other equipment to skilled individuals to help grow their businesses. Beneficiaries also received essential food items, including bags of rice.

“Our goal is to empower thousands of youths and women across the South-East region. Women and youth are the bedrock and drivers of sustainable development in any society,” Enwere said.

As the National President of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), he reaffirmed SERHA’s dedication to uplifting communities and supporting economic progress.

Delivering a keynote address, Professor Frank Aneto of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, underscored the importance of youth empowerment and political collaboration in unlocking the South-East’s potential.

Speaking on the theme, “Empowering South-East Nigeria for Economic Emancipation and Prosperity,” Aneto highlighted the transformative role of political alignment in fostering regional development.

The event served as a platform to bridge the gap between the South-East and the federal government, reinforcing SERHA’s mission to drive empowerment initiatives and promote growth across the region.
