    Elumelu lifts scheme with N25b

The Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has donated N25 billion to support the Produce for Lagos Programme, an initiative of Lagos Food Systems Infrastructure Company.

The programme was created to enhance food security and promote economic development in the state.

Elumelu announced the donation yesterday during the launch of the initiative in Lagos.

“In a few years’ time, it will help us face the challenge of joblessness of our young ones. We believe  joblessness is a great problem of our young people. They shouldn’t be jobless, we have arable lands,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to collaborate and bring the vision to life, describing it as “our initiative”.

“Whatever your excellency wants us to do at United Bank for Africa, Transcorp Group, Tony Elumelu Foundation and Heirs Holdings, we will do,” Elumelu said.

Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, officially launched the Produce for Lagos Programme along with a N500 billion offtake guarantee fund.

Olusanya said the initiative was part of Lagos State Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap, which was launched in 2021.

She said the programme addressed the informal and uncoordinated flow of food into Lagos by introducing a data-driven framework that enabled states to track and optimise the supply of agricultural produce to the state.

“The Produce for Lagos Programme is designed to strengthen ties with major food-producing states, improve supply chain efficiency, reduce food costs and post-harvest losses, guarantee market access for farmers and agribusinesses, create sustainable livelihoods across the agricultural value chain,” Olusanya said.

“This is in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises agriculture and food security as national goals.”

The commissioner said the programme positioned Lagos as a reliable off-taker and strategic partner in building a resilient and integrated agricultural economy.

    • Governor signs MoU on Lagos Offtake Guarantee Fund

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said his administration has put in place measures that will promote agriculture and ensure food security for the state and the nation at large.

The governor said this at the launch of the N500 billion Produce for Lagos, an Offtake Guarantee Fund, an agricultural initiative, held yesterday at the Lagos House, Ikeja.

He signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Lagos Offtake Guarantee Fund

One of the measures the governor noted is the creation of the State Farmers’ Information Management System, where information about the number, location, what they produce, and the size of their farms can be easily accessed at the press of a button.

“This Farmers’ Information Management System is a dashboard that allows us to identify all the farmers in the state. As of today, our state has about 160,000 farmers registered on the dashboard, and we know where they are and what they produce,” he said.

He added that the system has given his administration the edge to know what each farmer in the state grows, just as he said that the system has continuously helped the state to scientifically provide inputs and fertilisers for farmers, thereby helping the state to become one of the few states with the lowest food inflation in the country.

Abiodun, along with the host, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, Dr. Agbu Kefas of Taraba, and the Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Ahmed Ododo, in a discussion segment, highlighted ways their individual states would contribute to the success of the Lagos Produce programme to the benefit of not only Lagos State, but also the nation as a whole.

Governor Abiodun emphasised the need for the Federal Government to initiate similar programmes, which he believed would go a long way to guarantee funds for the growth and development of agriculture in the country.

“I think what Lagos State has done here is something that the Federal Government should look into by nationalising and creating some type of sovereign fund to guarantee food offtake. I think that is what we should be looking at, and I believe that if the Federal Government were to put in place some funds of this nature, probably a Trillion Naira Food Guarantee Fund, it will spin off the entire landscape and ensure that there is indeed food security and food sovereignty.

“What Lagos State has done is truly laudable and very proactive. I think that it has taken a clue from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative in agriculture, where the plan is to farm over 500 million hectares of land. We saw him launching tractors and over 9,000 farm implements a few weeks ago to underscore his commitment to food sovereignty.

“Ogun State is ready for this funding. We have farmers who are already agitated in a scientific manner, so if you can avail them of the funds, they are disciplined, and they will indeed pay back,” he noted.

Ibadan North by-election: Aspirants reject APC candidate

All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants in the forthcoming Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, under the aegis of ‘United Ibadan North Federal Constituency Aspirants Forum’, have rejected Mr Adewale ‘Murphy’ Olatunji as the party’s candidate.

The aspirants lamented that despite no delegate congress and primary election, Olatunji was announced as the candidate of APC in the election.

They said he did not emerge through free, fair and credible primaries.

A statement by members of the forum, which comprised Olaleye Segun, Lapade Idris, Farouk Arisekola, Adekunle Oladeji, Saheed Aderounmu, Mrs Balikis Junaid, Oluyinka Omikunle and Kalil Mustapha, objected to the purported conduct of primary election on Sunday at a designated venue, which did not hold.

The aspirants said any purported primary election held without adherence to APC rules and procedures was illegitimate.

The forum sought intervention of the national leadership and stakeholders of the party, to allow democratic process take place in the interest of the party in next month’s by-election.

The forum claimed that APC leadership in Ibadan North Local Government also rejected the illegitimate process of the purported by-election.

“Why will Mr Olatunji be parading himself as the candidate of APC when eight of the 10 aspirants signed that no primary election was held due to anomalies that characterised the process?

“This anti-democratic posture and one man showmanship of Mr Olatunji should be noted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great party, APC.”

The aspirants, however, said they remained committed to the ideals of the party and the democratic process, calling for urgent intervention in the matter to correct the anomalies.

  • Makinde commissions 5.9km dualised Akobo-Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa road

Makinde commissions 5.9km dualised Akobo-Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa road

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has commissioned the newly-dualised 5.9 kilometers Akobo–Ojurin–Olorunda Abaa road, noting that the project is a strategic linkage road that will open up rural communities, stimulate trade, ease transportation and uplift the quality of life of the people.

The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy Bayo Lawal, noted that the project is another testament to the visionary governance in the state.

Noting that the administration’s steadfastness and commitment to inclusive development has continued to transform the landscape of Oyo State, Governor Makinde said the road has been named after Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu in recognition of his contributions to the development of the state.

Makinde restarted the construction and dualisation of the Akobo-Ojurin Road and Akobo Flyover in his first term of office, while the construction of the 5.6km Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa was flagged off in 2023.

Speaking at the commissioning of the project, held at the Nathaniel Idowu Comprehensive High School, Olorunda Abaa, Ibadan, the governor added that the construction of the road is in fulfillment of his electioneering promise in 2023, noting that it would serve as a critical link connecting communities and boosting economic activity in Lagelu Local Government and beyond.

He said: “It is with immense pleasure and a deep sense of fulfillment that I welcome you all to this historic commissioning of the newly-dualised 5.9km Akobo–Ojurin–Olorunda Abaa–Eniosa Junction Road, a critical link connecting our communities and boosting economic activities in Lagelu LGA and beyond.

“This landmark project, executed under the able leadership of the chairman of Lagelu Local Government, Hon. Kamorudeen Mudashiru, stands as yet another testament to the visionary governance of Governor Seyi Makinde, whose steadfastness and commitment to inclusive development continues to transform the landscape of Oyo State.

“During the governor’s campaign visit to Ward 3 of Lagelu LGA, he made a promise to the people of Olorunda Abaa and its environs that this road, once a symbol of neglect, would be revived and upgraded to world-class standard.

“Today, we witness the fulfillment of that promise, as the road is not just tarred with asphalt, it is fully dualised, complete with solar-powered street lighting, drainage systems, and tarred adjoining access roads to enhance connectivity and safety.

“This project forms part of the broader dualised corridor stretching from Idi-Ape to Basorun to Akobo-Ojurin to Olorunda Abaa and Eniosa Junction.

“This strategic linkage is more than just a road; it is a lifeline that will open up our rural communities, stimulate trade, ease transportation, and uplift the quality of life of our people.

“But this is not an isolated achievement. Governor Seyi Makinde’s infrastructure revolution is visible across the length and breadth of Oyo State. Permit me to spotlight just a few milestones: The 76.7km Ogbomoso-Fapote-Iseyin Road, which connects two major economic zones and enhances regional agricultural trade.

“We also have the 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin Road, another legacy project, which has reduced travel time drastically while increasing access to rural communities and the dualisation of the 12.5km Challenge-Odo Ona-Elewe-Apata Road in Ibadan, which is now easing the burden of intra-city traffic and improving commuter experience.

“There is also the reconstruction of the Moniya–Iseyin Road, which was completed in the first term (Omituntun 1.0) and remains a shining example of what visionary leadership can accomplish within record time and the completion of the Airport-Ajia-New Ife Expressway with a spur to Amuloko, enhancing access to the Ibadan Airport and has been encouraging investments in the state.

“Also, projects such as the Ibadan Circular Road, among others, have continued to demonstrate the governor’s commitment to building infrastructure that supports economic growth.”

The governor praised Lagelu Local Government for completing the landmark project, toeing the path of Ido Local Government, which completed the 10.3 kilometres Omi Adio-Ido Junction Road in December 2023, noting that all local governments in the state have been beneficiaries of different people-oriented developments.

“Under the Omituntun 2.0 roadmap, each of our 33 local government areas is a beneficiary of people-oriented developments. From road construction to health facilities, from model schools to rural electrification and water projects, Governor Makinde has been ensuring that no community is left behind.

“This is why we must continue to rally behind this transformative leadership. The progress we see today is the result of strategic planning, prudent management of resources, and a people-first governance philosophy.

“As we commission this Akobo-Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa-Eniosa Junction Road , let us also recommit ourselves to supporting this administration so that Oyo State can continue on the path of prosperity, stability, and progress.

“Let me conclude by expressing our deepest gratitude to Governor Makinde, for staying true to his word and delivering yet another impactful project. The people of Lagelu are proud, and indeed, all of Oyo State stands in admiration.

“Omituntun 2.0 is working; Oyo State is moving forward and we must sustain the momentum towards 2027 and beyond.”

The event, graced by Governor Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Isiaq Salako, international partners from Northwestern University, USA, and prominent health experts, marked a major milestone in the state’s battle against HPV-related diseases and preventable cancers.

Delivering his goodwill message, Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin lauded the launch of the Mobile Truck Clinic, which will deliver cancer screening and preventive services directly to underserved communities across four local government areas of Oyo State.

He said, “It is targeting 50,000 to 60,000 citizens in its initial phase, while screenings will cover cervical, anal, oral, breast, and prostate cancers, as well as diabetes and hypertension.

The clinic, backed by the John R. Flanagan Charitable Foundation, and the newly commissioned Molecular Laboratory symbolize not just infrastructure, but a revolution in community-centered health delivery.”

The Speaker commended the HPV Consortium led by Professor Imran Morhason-Bello for embracing a multidisciplinary research model: integrating Public Health, Basic and Clinical Medical Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry, and the Humanities. Strategic partnerships with global institutions such as Northwestern University (USA) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK) reflect a commitment to cutting-edge research and transformative outreach.

Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin shared emotional reflections on losing his mother to cancer two years ago and growing up with a father who battled sickle cell anaemia, instilling values of empathy and impact that guide his leadership today.

According to him, the Oyo State House of Assembly fully recognises the role of science, data, and innovation in policy making, and it is committed to ensuring that legislative support aligns with the advancement of public health.

“I would like to pledge our legislative support for Cancer Prevention and HPV Awareness, exploring the possibility of passing a resolution mandating routine HPV vaccination for eligible age groups in public schools, in line with WHO recommendations. We will also support awareness programs in partnership with our Ministries of Education and Health.

“We will advocate for special budget lines dedicated to supporting community outreach programs such as the Mobile Truck Clinic. These funds will strengthen local implementation in the LGAs, ensuring sustainability beyond the pilot phase.

“Besides, the State Legislature will work with the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board and the Consortium to establish formal mechanisms of oversight and accountability, ensuring that mobile screening programs are regularly evaluated and adapted based on real-time data.

“Through our Youth Parliament and civic engagement channels, we will support sensitisation drives in schools and communities.

“In collaboration with stakeholders, we will consider introducing a Bill on Comprehensive Cancer Control in Oyo State. This law could provide a legal framework for screening, research, data collection, and patient support systems across the state.

“This is more than a ceremony—it’s a call to conscience. We must not rest until preventive screening becomes a norm, not a privilege.” Ogundoyin declared.

He called on government bodies, NGOs, academia, and the private sector to rally behind cancer prevention and early detection strategies.

Ex-House Assembly candidate dumps PDP for APC in Ondo

A former candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the House of Assembly in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Dotun Olorunyomi, has resigned his membership of the party.

Olorunyomi, who contested the assembly seat in the 2023 general elections, also announced his defection to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state in his resignation letter, obtained on Wednesday.

In the letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Odigbo LGA, Odigbo Ward, he said the decision to leave the fold of the PDP was due to leadership crisis and poor reconciliation mechanism within the party.

The PDP chieftain added that his decision to pitch his tent with the APC marks a good beginning of a new chapter in his political journey of his life.

He also added that his new exit from the PDP and entrance to the APC were taken after consultations with trusted allies, supporters, and confidants.

“After introspective consultations with my trusted allies, supporters, and confidants, I have resolved to relinquish my membership and am poised to explore new horizons and embark on a fresh journey.

“As a former member of the party and a one-time flag bearer, I observed that the PDP has a dysfunctional political ideology, and the leadership of the party lacks an effective reconciliation mechanism, thereby tearing the party apart at all levels,” he said

Olorunyomi, however, underscored the APC’s ability to unite its members after primary elections than the opposition party in the state.

“I have keenly observed the APC and ascertained that the leadership of the party has demonstrated maturity, perseverance, patience, and immeasurable commitment to the progress of the party, beyond personal interest.”

Receiving Olorunyomi into the APC at the Ore Township Hall, the chairman of APC in Odigbo local government, Fatai Olawale, expressed joy and appreciated him for joining the party, assuring him of a prosperous collaboration within the APC.

Also, the special adviser to the state governor on union matters and special duties, Comrade Taiwo, congratulated Olorunyomi for joining the APC.

“APC is one big family. We are happy to welcome you to our fold. The APC is a party that is grounded in ideology and committed to good governance. We are happy to receive you today and encourage others to do the same,” he said.

GMT hails Tinubu’s achievements in two years, says it’s evidence of visionary leadership

The Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu (GMT) in Ondo State has lauded President Bola Tinubu, describing his achievements in the last two years as a testament to visionary and courageous leadership.

Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, the director-general of the group, stated this at an interactive session with the leadership and local government coordinators of the group held on Wednesday at its secretariat in Akure, the state capital.

Yusuf-Ogunleye, who commended President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda and economic blueprint”, affirmed that his policies are beginning to yield tangible outcomes.

He explained that the achievements of the President have renewed confidence in the administration of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) and also increased public interest in grassroots mobilisation efforts.

“We are witnessing tremendous growth in our membership across all 18 local government areas of Ondo State because of the achievements being recorded by President Bola Tinubu in just two years since he came on board.

“And to deepen our structure and enhance mobilisation, we have mandated every local government and ward chapter to appoint 12 interim officers to strengthen grassroots engagement,” he said.

While expressing the group’s unalloyed support for the re-election of President Tinubu in 2027, Yusuf-Ogunleye saluted the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his consistent support for the group and his role in delivering the campaign promises.

He also acknowledged the state party chairman, Ade Adetimehin, and Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for creating an enabling environment for the group to thrive.

The DG further noted that GMT had briefed the governor about its formation, structure, and mission.

“Even non-APC members are identifying with our cause because they believe in President Tinubu’s vision. GMT is inclusive and driven by the belief that no one should be left behind.

“There may be many pro-Tinubu groups in the state, but with synergy, we are confident the APC will remain victorious,” he said.

Speaking at the session, the group’s legal adviser, Akinwunmi Sowore, reiterated the GMT’s primary focus to promote and propagate the achievements of President Tinubu, stating that more strategic programmes will soon be rolled out.

Also, the Women Leader of the group, Olamide Falana, said GMT consists of grassroots-oriented politicians with integrity and commitment to showcasing Tinubu’s legacy.

Oyo SEMA warns flood-prone communities to prepare for heavy rainfall

The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has issued a warning to residents in flood-prone areas of the state, urging them to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Administrative Secretary of SEMA, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari, said data from the Oyo State Flood Early Warning System indicates that communities to the east and northeast of Ibadan city centre are expected to experience the most intense rainfall.

Areas highlighted for concern include parts of Lagelu Local Government Area, particularly Iyana Offa, eastern Moniya, and communities stretching further east toward Osun State. Parts of Egbeda LGA, especially the eastern edges and those bordering Lagelu LGA, are also expected to witness significant downpours.

“Communities along the Ibadan-Ife Road (A5 highway) such as Egbeda and further east should prepare for heavy rainfall,” Busari said.

She added that moderate to heavy rainfall is also forecast across many parts of Ibadan Metropolis, particularly the eastern and central zones.

These include densely populated areas like IITA, Ibadan Airport, University of Ibadan, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, and Ring Road. Parts of Akinyele and Oluyole LGAs are also expected to be affected.

SEMA assured residents that the agency, alongside other government bodies, voluntary organisations, and civil society groups, is ready to respond to any emergency and support affected communities.

“In simpler terms, if you are in or travelling through the eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan today—especially along major roads heading east and north—you should expect heavy rainfall with possible flooding,” she warned.

Busari urged residents to begin taking precautionary measures immediately to mitigate risks, stressing that “discretion is the better part of valour.”

  • SAfER: Oyo spends N2.1bn to subsidise transport for over 5.8m residents — PTS boss

SAfER: Oyo spends N2.1bn to subsidise transport for over 5.8m residents — PTS boss

The Oyo State Government has spent N2.1 billion to subsidise transport fares for no fewer than 5,880,000 passengers across Ibadan and other inter-city routes between January and July 2025 under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative.

Chairman and Sole Administrator of the Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS), Dr. Ibrahim Dikko, disclosed this during a media briefing at the Governor’s Office, saying the routes covered include Ibadan-Iseyin-Saki, Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso, and Ibadan-Ibarapa.

He said the intervention, introduced by Governor Seyi Makinde in August 2023 to cushion the impact of economic hardship, offers subsidised transportation for students, pensioners, the elderly, people living with disabilities, and the general public using Pacesetter Buses.

“Since August 5th, 2023, when the SAfER initiative was launched, the state government has spent N2,151,000,000 to subsidise transportation for the people,” Dikko said.

He explained that from August to December 2023, N541 million was committed to the programme, allowing daily commutes for 26,000 to 30,000 residents. In 2024, the state invested N924 million and recorded over 9.95 million passengers. So far in 2025, N686 million has been spent, with 5.88 million people benefiting.

Dikko lauded Governor Makinde’s efforts to revive the once-moribund transport company, noting that since his own appointment in July 2023, the PTS has expanded routes, revived more buses, and implemented digital innovations.

He revealed that the service now operates 39 intra-city routes with 55 buses and five inter-city routes with 10 buses. Upon assuming office, he said he revived 30 buses for Ibadan routes and deployed 16 for inter-city services under SAfER, totalling 46 buses.

The PTS chairman also highlighted key reforms, including a digital payment system introduced in September 2023, installation of CCTV cameras and trackers in vehicles, and measures to curb diesel theft, revenue leakages, and route diversions by drivers.

Dikko maintained that the introduction of the card payment system increased revenues from N200,000 to over N1.5 million in a day, noting that the PTS has recorded a steady rise in the number of subscribers, with 262,000 subscribers recorded to date.

The chairman listed the installation of trackers on buses, fixing of speed monitors and CCTV cameras in buses as other reforms recorded by the company.

He equally mentioned the clearing of the company’s tax liabilities to the tune of N150 million, the payment of salaries without defaulting, acquisition of 20KVA and 250KVA generating sets, total reconstruction of the company and improved staff welfare, such as the introduction of overtime allowances, management meeting allowances and implementation of minimum wage, among others, as some of the achievements of the PTS.

He revealed how he has been able to expand the services of the PTS, which, according to him, have earned more revenues for the state, saying: “Let me say this. There are other avenues whereby we have expanded to make money, because we can’t rely on 50 per cent subsidies across all routes in the state.

“We have taken expansion as a core mandate, a mission. We have expanded. And that is why we have Lagos and Abuja routes to just augment. And also, we have introduced logistics services. You can send your goods and services to Ibadan, Lagos or Abuja.

“Also, there is an opportunity to make money from branding. You can brand our buses. So, those are ways we just augment and we have more profits.”

While fielding questions from newsmen, the PTS chairman added that the Oyo State Government received a total of 30 CNG buses from the Federal Government and that it has since deployed them to inter-state routes, with the Ibadan to Abuja operations launched earlier in 2025.

He noted that it would launch the Lagos to Abuja operations in a few days, while the Ibadan to Kwara operations will follow in a few weeks, with operations to other Southwestern states to be announced later in the year.

He also expressed the readiness of the PTS to launch a CNG conversion centre as well as Taxi Transport Services for easy movement of travellers within and outside the Ibadan International Airport after the upgrade, as well as to and fro the train station, among others.

When asked about the controversy that surfaced about the PTS at some point, Dikko maintained that it was a situation of corruption fighting back, saying, “When we came in, PTS was nothing to write home about. I can say it boldly that between July 2023, when I came in and December 2023, PTS was embroiled in crisis. There was a tax liability of N150 million, and they froze all the accounts of PTS.

“We cleared that tax liability in six months without going to the state government to help us, because it is a company and it has to run itself and be self-sustained. It is a must. So, we had to start working on how to boost the morale of the employees.

“We started paying back our gratuity and pensions from 1994. And, there were backlogs of promotions from 2009, and we said something had to be done so that we could, at least, boost morale. I can categorically tell you these facts, and you can come and cross-check them.

“Then, we started introducing N50,000 running cost per employee to boost their morale. But you know that when people are rigid and they cannot change, believing that they are bigger than the system, there will always be a problem. So, they sent those petitions to the House of Assembly saying that I was actually siphoning money.

“Let me give you an example. On our interstate operations, as of today, we have commuted 38,539 people. There is about N160.2 million that we have made in the past six months. There are proofs. How do you want to take this money that was paid electronically out?

“So, the controversy came because we have blocked loopholes, blocked every way through which some people can actually steal. So, they started going about and painting different pictures, different scenarios. They went to the House of Assembly, they petitioned DSS, police and all that.

“But when these people did their investigations, they saw that it was the accusers who were painting another picture. So, for me, I am standing by the truth. There is nothing to hide. All money made in PTS is electronically made. And, you cannot remove anything.”

The PTS chairman was accompanied to the press briefing by Mr. Aremu Taofeek, Director of Finance and Accounts and Mr. Mukhtar Azeez, Director of Business Planning and Financial Analysis.
