In a tribute to mark the governor’s diamond jubilee, Jimoh recounted Sanwo-Olu’s humble beginnings in Omididun, Lagos Island, and commended his rise through the ranks to become a key figure in the development of modern Lagos.

  • Why Femi Gbajabiamila is Lagos future

Why Femi Gbajabiamila is Lagos future

    By Albert Nwoye

Although I am Igbo from Anambra, born and bred in Lagos, I believe I should have as much interest as any indigenous Yoruba man in the political recruitment and governance of the only state I have known my entire life as home. Lagos is where my father and his three siblings grew up, and where he married my mother, who bore him his five lovely children, among whom I am the second. My parents and all my siblings—including two females betrothed to an Oye-Ekiti-born engineer and the other, a lawyer from Ijebu-Igbo—speak fluent Yoruba and can even recite proverbs. I grew up in different neighborhoods in Lagos, spoke its slang, and assimilated its cultures. I am confident and proud to call myself a bona fide ‘Omo Eko,’ just as my kinsman, the 1990s Fuji sensation Sunny T Adesokan, who sang Fuji (“Okoro to n ko Fuji”), would see himself. Back to the purpose of my intervention. In just two years from now, the current Lagos State administration will wind down, paving the way for a fresh governorship election.

As conversations around potential contenders for the 2027 governorship election grows louder, one name has featured prominently: Femi Gbajabiamila, the current Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. Both online and offline, he stands out as a preferred and formidable candidate to don the mantle. Gbajabiamila’s prominence is no coincidence. Over the past two decades, he has bestridden the political space with steadfast resolve. Since his initial election into the House of Representatives in 2003 to represent Surulere I Federal Constituency, up until his 2023 resignation to serve in his present national capacity, his political career has exemplified vision, charisma, and purpose.

An inspiring debater and a compelling polemist, distinguished by his oratory and clarity of thought on issues, Gbajabiamila was always a delight to watch during plenary debates. As opposition leader, he showed strategic vision and offered credible policy alternative and governance roadmap during the era of the Peoples Democratic Party. His ascension as Majority Leader and later Speaker of the lower chamber saw him become a unifying force, galvanizing support across party divides for legislation that served ordinary Nigerians. This was evident in the bills he either personally championed or co-sponsored during his legislative career.

Today, Nigerians are witnesses to the positive impacts of the rebirthed student loan that has so far benefitted over 500,000 students. The Access to Higher Education Act (Student Loan), which gave birth to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, and currently bridging the economic and gender gaps in tertiary education enrolment and retention, is Gbaja’s brainchild. The revamped student loan clearly showed that he understands the significance of education and the role of the youth in blazing Nigeria to a more glorious and prosperous future. This mindset apparently propelled his advocacy for the installation of prepaid meters at a time the existing power distribution companies adopted the estimated billing system, widely deplored as inhuman and at the detriment of the long-suffering electricity consumers. His guts to move against the elite-owned power companies was not only exemplary but also attested to his people-centric political belief. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic when he led a few of his colleagues to champion and saw to the eventual passage of the Emergency Economic Stimulus Bill, aimed at mitigating the pains the global health emergency inflicted on businesses and livelihoods of Nigerians.

Beyond the parliament, Gbajabiamila’s impact resonated deeply through his extensive empowerment programmes to his constituents. The transformation his economic empowerment wrought in the lives of his constituents testifies to his practical and compassionate leadership. From the distribution of cars, buses, laptops, and industrial machines to artisans and traders, to the provision of educational grants for tertiary institution students and the facilitation of numerous infrastructural projects including roads, mini-stadiums, and ICT centers, he consistently brought the dividends of democracy directly to the people. The ‘Femi Gbajabiamila Hall of Residence’ at the University of Lagos and the ‘Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital’ in Surulere are enduring testaments to his pro-people belief and worthy investments in human well-being. This is whom a cosmopolitan Lagos State needs: a compassionate and responsive leader, who feels the pulse of the people and possessing a capability to navigate complex governance issues.

With a leader like Gbaja, Lagos State’s ambition to transit into a smart city, become a more secured orbit for commerce and human enterprise is a certainty. More so, given his pan-Nigerian outlook, it is undoubted that he would better manage the diversities that define Lagos while fostering inclusion. Additionally, his impressive educational background is another important factor supporting his suitability for the governorship post. A graduate of the University of Lagos, the John Marshall Law School, and backed by his attendance of various leadership development courses at revered institutions like Cambridge, Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard Kennedy School, Gbajabiamila brings to the table not only a sharp legal mind but also a worldview that is broad, progressive, and deeply informed. For a pluralistic state like Lagos, Gbajabiamila’s blend of experience and vision is an incomparable asset.

His international exposure and legal expertise will be helpful in attracting foreign investment, fostering a robust atmosphere for business and global partnerships. His understanding of legislative processes ensures that the state’s policies will be meticulously crafted and effectively implemented.

His commitment to education and empowerment will cultivate a skilled workforce and a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, crucial for a truly global city. His advocacy for public health and infrastructure development will elevate the quality of life for all residents irrespective of their statuses.

This intervention is a clarion call to the public as well as it is to the decision-makers within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace Femi Gbajabiamila not just as a capable hand, but also as a strategic choice to bring accelerated development in Lagos.

To my fellow south easterners living in Lagos: let us not sit this one out. Our voices matter. Our contributions to this state are countless—from commerce to culture to civic life. Supporting Gbajabiamila in 2027 is a vote for inclusivity, development, and shared prosperity. Lagos gave us a home; let us shape its future.

This is more than an endorsement. It is a heartfelt call—to rise above old divisions and unite around a leader who sees Lagos for what it truly is: a place for everyone.

Confab: Protest rocks Osun over delegates’ list, inclusion of Corps members

Angry youths yesterday stormed the Osun State Secretariat to protest against the government for allegedly enlisting only its appointees as delegates to the Youth Confab and inclusion of Corps members among the state delegates.

The protesters, who stormed the gate of secretariat and Ministry of Youths, carrying placards and banners with several inscriptions, chanted anti-government songs.

The youth under the aegis of Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens (CCNC), alleged that the Commissioner of Youth Development, Moshood Olagunju, politicised the delegate lists for National Youth Conference.

The Nation recalled that the Federal Ministry of Youth Development announced National Youth Confab 2025 to bring together youths to unite and co-create the future of the nation after the EndBadGovernace protest last year.

The protesters, led by Comrade Oluomo Success, raised concerns that the Osun government excluded civil society groups, youths and other stakeholders from the lists but only enlisted government appointees as delegates for the forthcoming conference.

He demanded for transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, warning that they will continue to protest until their demands are met and the right delegate are recognised, not appointees of the governor and government.

Olagunju said: “What you are seeing is the directive given to us from the top—Federal not in Osun. We are to include Corps members. I used my initiative to choose from this organisation.

“We have Corps members, who are indigenes of Osun State and serving in the state, which are under my ministry, I am the one who did it. All your grievances should be towards Abuja.”

Strike: Aiyedatiwa approves three-month arrears payment for poly workers

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved the payment of three months’ arrears of salary being owed striking workers of the state owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo (RUGIPO), in the state.

The approval was given yesterday shortly after a meeting between the governor and some union leaders at the government office in Akure over the lingering strike action in the tertiary institutions of the state

Recall that the staff members of the various institutions under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had last week wrote a protest letter to Governor Aiyedatiwa, asking for their inclusion in the National Minimum wage structure of the state.

They JAC, which comprise four tertiary institutions of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the governor.

However, The Nation gathered from government sources at the meeting that the move by governor Aiyedatiwa is a step to end the industrial dispute in the tertiary institutions over agitation to implement the 2024 national minimum wage for the staff members.

“This move is an intervention by the governor (Aiyedatiwa) to end the labour disputes between the management of the schools and staff of the state institutions.

“So, with the approval of the three months’ outstanding salary, you would understand that the governor is not resting to ensure the workers in our tertiary institutions get their wages,” he said.

But speaking on the development, the JAC chairman in the state, Comrade Tayo Ogungbeni, said the approval was belated.

Ogungbeni recalls that the committee had met with Aiyedatiwa last month, where he gave nod for the approval., insisting that the strike action would continue.

“The approval is not new. He said it when we met with him on the 4th of May, 2025. So, I’m surprised. We have been on a warning strike since last Thursday. So, nothing can take us back, except we see seriousness from the part of the governor.

“If he has met with us and promised us certain things and refused to do it, I don’t see any seriousness on his part,” he added.

  • ‘Death penalty for kidnappers will strengthen criminal law, discourage crime’

‘Death penalty for kidnappers will strengthen criminal law, discourage crime’

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, Kayode Ajulo, has stated that the proposed legislation of ‘death penalty’ for any kidnappers would strengthen the criminal laws of the state by allowing stricter penalties for convict.

Ajulo also said the legislation, which is aimed at reviewing and updating the existing laws in the state to reflect current realities, would serve as a strong deterrent against such crime.

Recall that the state government had at the weekend said any kidnapper convicted by court of law would henceforth face the ‘death penalty’ by hanging,

It also stressed that any building and facilities used for committing such crime would be demolished in line with the law.

But addressing journalists yesterday in Akure, Ajulo said the legislation, which was deliberated at the state executive council, would be forwarded to the State House of Assembly as Executive Bills for legislative consideration.

READ ALSO: 2027 coalitions and collisions

He said: “The proposed legislation to stem kidnappings and social vices aimed to repeal the one in force, which seeks to strengthen the criminal laws of Ondo State, with particular focus on anti-cultism and anti-kidnapping legislations.

“The bills are to review and update existing laws to reflect current realities, introducing stricter penalties that serve as a strong deterrent against these crimes.

“This executive bill was deliberated upon at the Ondo State Executive Council meeting and given the nod to be sent to the Ondo State House of Assembly as Executive Bills for legislative consideration.”

According to him, “Some of the provisions are the introduction of the death penalty for convicted kidnappers, particularly in cases where the victim is killed or dies while in the custody of the abductors.

“The bill also addresses broader issues concerning state security, public safety, and peace. Many existing laws, such as the law against cultism and related offences, require thorough revision.”

He observed that previous legislation in the state did not account for the involvement of family members, friends, or associates of offenders in cult-related activities.

Additionally, the Ondo AG explained that while current laws recognised just a few cult groups, the number of active groups has significantly increased and necessitated the government of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to act.

“The outdated classifications and inadequate provisions have created enforcement gaps and limited the effectiveness of the justice system.

“Under the proposed law, penalties for cultism and kidnapping will be substantially increased. For instance, offences that previously attracted a six-year prison sentence may now carry a 21-year term, and in cases involving loss of life, the death penalty may apply.”

A traditional ruler in Ogun State and paramount ruler of all Awori-speaking people, Oba Sulaiman Adekunle Bamigbade, Ayodele III, has issued an order to residents of estates and other communities in his domain to commence weekly environmental sanitation.

In a letter to leaders and residents of the various estates and communities within his domain dated 11th of June, 2025, the traditional ruler stated that the decision stems from the need to curb likely flooding that are scheduled to come with heavy downpour in the coming months.

According to the letter made available to newsmen signed by Oba Bamigbade himself, the action is also aimed at keeping to the warnings of the National Meteorological Agency (NIMET) suggesting flooding in some states of the federation occasioned by expected heavy downpour during the year.

“In the light of the recent flooding predictions issued by the National Meteorological Agency (NIMET), it has become important for communities within our domain to take proactive steps towards safeguarding our environment and the well-being of our residents.
