Nigerian Army seeks stronger media partnership to tackle security challenges

The Nigerian Army has called for stronger collaboration between the military and the media as part of efforts to address the country’s growing and complex security challenges.

This appeal was made during the Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation quarterly media chat held over the weekend in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The event, themed “Military-Media Collaboration: Panacea for Enhanced National Security and Development,” was organised by the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs.

The one-day gathering brought together journalists, media executives, communication experts, senior military officers, and heads of sister security agencies across the state.

Speaking at the event, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by Major General Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, said the military continues to confront the nation’s security challenges through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

He emphasized the vital role of the media in informing the public about the military’s efforts, noting that accurate and responsible reporting is essential in the “whole-of-nation” approach required to ensure national security and development.

“I believe that the great debate on whether the pen is mightier than the sword is over, the pen has won the debate, and it is accepted that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

“However, in a time of varied security threats to our society, there is a need for enhanced cooperation and collaboration between the pen and the sword representing the media and the military.

“The collaboration and partnership between the Nigerian Army and the media remains fundamental to achieving national security objectives, which is crucial for maintaining peace, harmony, and securing the territorial integrity of Nigeria,” Oluyede said.

According to him, in a bid to foster effective collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the media, it is also essential to encourage open dialogue and mutual respect.

This, he stressed, would assist in regular communication channels to enable transparent reportage, timely dissemination of information, countering disinformation, and misinformation in building public confidence.

“Therefore, I urge media practitioners at all levels to uphold responsibility, accuracy, and fairness when reporting the Nigerian Army activities and to balance national security interests with the people’s right to information.

“This is also crucial to avoid spreading misinformation or inflammatory contents that could undermine national unity and security. To this end, I encourage media practitioners to always verify information before disseminating it to the public.

“To achieve this, it is important that our collaboration extends beyond conflict reporting to include national development, peace building, and community engagements,” the Army chief said.

In his welcome remarks, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA), Maj-Gen. Chibuisi Gold harpened on the need to strengthen mutual understanding between the Army and media stakeholders in addressing the envolving national security challenges.

He added that it was also essential in harmonizing a productive effort between the Nigerian Army and media in a joint pursuit of national security objectives.

“As an Army, we are not only committed to safeguarding our nation, but also fostering relationships that promote understanding and unity among our people,” Gold said.

In his goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Orientation Olarewaju Akarakiri said the event was crucial, noting that the synergy between the military and the media is also important for promoting national unity.

Akarakiri, who was represented by the administrative secretary in the ministry, Akindele Adedayo, opined that the collaboration between the security agencies and the media would enhance the dissemination of accurate and balance reportage.

In his lecture titled “Enhancing Information for National Security and Development: Nigerian Military Operations in Perspectives”, the Executive Director, Armed Forces Radio Director, Abuja, Col Timothy Okon Antigua (RTD) highlighted the fundamentals and issues of national security and restated the importance of information management from the media.

While charging media practitioners to be fair in their reportage, Antigua used the opportunity to showcase activities of the Nigerian Army in troubled spots of the country.

“The Nigerian Army beyond fighting wars to keep the territorial integrity of this nation is engaged in a number of humanitarian activities across the country,” he said.

In her own lecture, titled “Effective Information Management and National Security: Focus on Multi-Stakeholders Approach,” the Head of the Mass Communication Department, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Dr Christiana Ade Johnson, driver into the roles of the media and particularly identified how the collaboration efforts with the military can be achieved in winning the war against terrorism.

Lightning strike kills 32 cows in Ogun Community

A lightning strike during a heavy downpour on Saturday claimed the lives of 32 cows in Osara village, Obantoko, Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident occurred around 2pm, as the cows, sheltered by Fulani herders from the storm, were struck and killed in their sheds.

The tragedy was said to have left the herders in shock and sorrow.

It was gathered that they reported the incident to the village head, Baale Wasiu Afolabi, who confirmed the development.

Afolabi stated that the herders discovered the lifeless animals after the storm and immediately notified him.

He added that a meeting has been scheduled with the affected herders to discuss preventive measures and ensure that such occurrences do not disrupt the peace in the community.

“On Saturday, the Fulani herders came to me at home to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows.

“I followed them to their place and saw the dead cows and we’ve reported it to the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr Afolashade Adeyemo,” Afolabi said.

However, Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, in a message to journalists concerning the incident, stated that the matter had been reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Aregbe Division on Saturday, stressing that operatives were quickly dispatched to the area.

“32 cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour,” Ogunlowo stated.

  • Aiyedatiwa reaffirms commitment to food security, distributes 166 fodders choppers

Aiyedatiwa reaffirms commitment to food security, distributes 166 fodders choppers

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening food security and boosting livestock production as a key driver of economic growth in the state.

Speaking over the weekend in Akure during the flag-off and distribution of 166 fodder choppers to livestock farmers, Aiyedatiwa said the initiative aims to move the state toward self-sufficiency in livestock production and support sustainable rural livelihoods.

The distribution is part of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, a collaborative effort between the Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and the World Bank.

Describing the event as a major step forward, the governor noted that the fodder choppers would help address key challenges facing livestock farmers, including poor feed utilisation and low productivity among smallholder producers across the state.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, said the intervention programme aligned with his administration’s developmental agenda to boast the agriculture sector through access to productive tools for farmers.

“In Ondo state, we recognise the importance of sheep and goat farming as not only a critical source of livelihood and food security for thousands of rural dwellers, but also its untapped potential in propelling inclusive economic growth.

“The distribution of these 166 fodder choppers today is a practical and impactful intervention to enhance forage utilisation. The machines would have helped to reduce feed wastage, improve intake, and significantly optimise the nutritional value of available feed resources,” he said.

He advised the beneficiary farmers to use the fodders’ choppers diligently and responsibly, stressing that the equipment will not only serve as tools but as agents of change in their respective communities.

The Permanent Secretary, the ministry of agriculture and forestry, Foluke Tunde-Daramola, explained that the distribution of the equipment marked a significant milestone in the state agricultural development agenda.

She added that the initiative is also a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to modernizing agricultural practices and empowering the state farmers.

In his words, the state coordinator of L-PRES, Olufemi Adeogun, said the distribution is another milestone in the ongoing efforts to transform agriculture and enhance the resilience of the livestock sector.

Mr Adeogun observed that fodder management remains a critical component of sustainable livestock production, especially in the face of erratic weather patterns, prolonged dry spells, and land degradation.

“These challenges have placed immense pressure on both our farmers and their animals, threatening food security, livelihoods, and rural economies.

“It is, therefore, not only timely but essential that we adopt technologies and innovations that promote efficiency, reduce wastage, and ensure that every blade of grass harvested is put to maximum use.

“The distribution of these fodder choppers, though simple, yet transformative tools will go a long way in helping our farmers improve the quality and digestibility of livestock feed,” he said.

  • Will Shina Peller stage a comeback in 2027?

Will Shina Peller stage a comeback in 2027?

    By Muiz Olasubomi

As Nigeria gears up for the pivotal 2027 general elections, the political landscape is vibrant with aspirations and ambitions. One figure who has emerged as both a hopeful candidate and a beacon of leadership is Hon. Shina Peller.

Hon. Shina Peller is not just a politician; he is a successful businessman turned politician who served in the ninth Nigerian House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023, representing the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency,

Peller, who is the Ayedero of Yorubaland, is widely known for his unwavering advocacy for youth representation in government. This has led to his honorary recognition as the Grand Commander of the Nigerian Youth (GCNY) and Life Patron of the Nigerian Youth by the National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN).

Another thing Peller is known for is his constant call for the need to creat a new functional system in Nigeria that will make the existing one obsolete. He always argue that the current system is faulty.

Also, Peller always speaks against political godfatherism which has become a norm in Nigerian politics.

Peller’s outspoken nature sometimes put him at odds with influential figures within his former party. His candid criticism of the party, which he described as anti-people, stirred controversies. While some influential people within the party considered his criticism absurd, many, particularly the masses, commended his bravery, courage and honesty.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Peller successfully sponsored/moved some important bills/motion which include but not limited to:

    – The need to tackle scourge of rape and other sexual offenses against female child and women. This prompted the federal government of Nigeria to establish the country’s first ever Sexual Offense Register as contained in Peller’s prayers.

    – His bill on the need to strengthen National Orientation Agency for optimal performance was also noteworthy.

    – The last motion he moved as a member of the House of Representatives was the need to strengthen Nigeria’s Creative Industry. This subsequently led to the present government creating Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy.

In the spirit of honouring a campaign promise, Peller opted not to run for a second term in the House of Representatives in order to give room to the rotational agreement between the local governments within his constituency. Instead, he aimed for the Oyo North Senatorial District seat, a decision that saw him face an electoral defeat amid allegations of irregularities.

However, this setback did not deter his political ambitions. Now, as a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peller has publicly declared his intention to run for Senate again in 2027.

One of the key factors influencing Peller’s potential for a comeback is his undeniable street credibility. His popularity and acceptance extend beyond mere political rhetoric; they are rooted in genuine connections with the people.

Also, his strong relationship with Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, further solidifies his stance as a formidable candidate for the forthcoming election.

Shina Peller has never hidden his admiration for Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership style. It is evident that his loyalty to the governor is not in doubt, as he has consistently maintained at different public gatherings that Makinde is a visionary leader and most performing governor in the history of Oyo State.

Due to his close relationship with the governor, some believe that he may be Governor Makinde’s preferred PDP candidate for the next Oyo State gubernatorial election.

Peller’s ability to engage with constituents on a personal level enables him to genuinely understand their concerns and needs. This rapport transcends traditional political boundaries, making it easier for voters to relate to him.

Another noteworthy aspect of his leadership style is his unwavering dedication to youth empowerment. Through the Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), Peller has trained thousands of Nigerian Youth across the country on leadership, governance, political organizing and mobilization, active citizenship, strategic communication and others.

LGI exists primarily to create and nurture a new generation of leaders that Nigeria and the world will be proud of. By equipping the next generation with the necessary skills, LGI is not only addressing immediate challenges but also laying the groundwork for sustainable development.

As Nigeria navigates complex socio-economic challenges, many citizens are searching for leaders who empathize with their struggles and can translate that empathy into action.

Peller’s unique attributes qualify him to be classified as one of those leaders that masses yearn for. If given the chance, he could very well usher in a new era of leadership where progress, inclusivity and empowerment reigns. But will he be able to stage a triumphant comeback in 2027? Time, the electorate, and most importantly, God will tell.

Re-strategise to attain SDGs before 2030 amid global conflicts — GASDI DG

Amid the Iran/Israel, Ukraine/Russia, and other global conflicts, stakeholders have raised the need to re-strategise on how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be attained before the 2030 deadline.

Stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Clement Adebooye, Director of Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute (GASDI), Prof. John Agbonifo, and foreign scholars, lamented that ongoing conflicts may impede the success of SDGs by 2030.

At the annual international sustainable development dialogue, Agbonifo said SDGs were designed to address issues under stable conditions, but wars and conflicts mean that we live in an unstable time. So the strategy marked out to address issues under stable times is less likely to work under unstable times, which is the reason why we have this programme.

He added: “There is a need for us to revisit the SGDs, especially against the contemporary context, and to see what can be done to be able to achieve those goals by negotiating the conditions and terms.

“Nobody foresaw that we would be embroiled in a kind of contention and crisis that the world is currently facing ten years ago. we need to be creative and imaginative through this crisis to attain the SDG goals.”

  • Iresa-Pupa community debunks historical claims by group, reaffirms landlord status

Iresa-Pupa community debunks historical claims by group, reaffirms landlord status

The Iresa-Pupa Community Development Association (ICDA) has strongly condemned what it described as a “comical and ahistorical” account issued by an anonymous group in Oko, dismissing the claims as “fundamentally inaccurate, structurally deficient, and laced with historical revisionism.”

In a joint statement signed by ICDA Chairman Rev. Zachaeus Olusanjo Akanni and Secretary Mr. Johnson Oyebamiji, the association rebuked the ongoing attempts to distort historical facts and questioned the credibility of the unnamed group, urging those behind the publication to embrace historical reality and focus on development rather than stoking division.

“The continued effort to rewrite our shared history by these faceless revisionists is a futile exercise,” the statement read. “We have verifiable and undeniable evidence that confirms Iresa-Pupa’s landownership and traditional authority over the Oloko of Oko.”

The ICDA addressed three main claims put forward by the anonymous group:

The group claimed that the Oloko was listed among superior traditional rulers. However, ICDA clarified that page 23 of the 1959 Gazette only listed lesser chiefs in districts, not first-class monarchs. “The Soun of Ogbomoso, Aresa, Olugbon, and others were not included, proving the document focused solely on lower-ranking chiefs.”

The ICDA argued that the second document referenced by the group — an expenditure record from “Ogbomoso North” in 1982 and 1983 — is a fabrication, noting that Ogbomoso North Local Government was only created in 1991. “This so-called document predates the existence of the local government it refers to,” the group noted, dismissing it as a clear case of misinformation.

The ICDA pointed out that several communities bear the name “Oko”, including Oko Ile and the now-extinct Oko Ose. “The current Oko Irese, which is less than 200 years old, cannot claim superiority over older Oko communities,” they said.

The ICDA traced the evolution of Oko as a settlement, citing the 2011 publication by Oko elders, which acknowledged that the original Oko was located near old Oyo Ile and was abandoned due to war.

Furthermore, referencing works by Prof. Oyerinde and the 1953 “Report of Oko Chieftaincy Dispute,” they reaffirmed that Aresa-Pupa is the traditional landlord, and that Oko chiefs are required to seek Aresa’s approval during succession processes.

On the chieftaincy lineage, the ICDA corrected another alleged historical error by the group, clarifying that the current Aresa-Pupa, Oba Moses Olayiwola Ajiboye III, is in fact the 11th Aresa-Pupa since the division of Iresa.

They listed all past rulers, beginning with Oba Obatuapa Taiwo to the present monarch, emphasizing the rich and documented lineage of their rulership.

They also recounted a 1992 letter from the Adaramola Oyenibi Ruling House seeking Aresa’s approval to install Oba Adaramola as Oloko, and a 2021 letter by Oko High Chiefs requesting inclusion in the Aresa Traditional Council—further supporting their position as landlords.

Backing their claim with the Oyo State Gazette of 1995, the ICDA noted that the Aresa-Pupa was granted prescribed authority over several chieftaincies, including Oko.

“More than 60 towns and villages fall under Aresa-Pupa’s traditional jurisdiction, including Oko,” the statement added.

The group also referenced a historic Supreme Court ruling in a land dispute between Aagba and Oko communities, where Aresa’s boundary submission formed the basis of the judgment.

They concluded by cautioning the Oloko and his followers against misrepresenting history or undermining established authority.

The ICDA promised to make documents supporting their claims available for public scrutiny, affirming their commitment to transparency, peace, and regional development.

1,000 petty traders benefit from Tinubu’s wife RHI cash grant in Oyo

No fewer than 1,000 petty traders across Oyo State on Thursday received support under the second tranche of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme and Recapitalisation Grant facilitated by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The grant, according to Mrs. Tinubu, is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to offer direct relief to individuals and families while promoting long-term economic empowerment.

At the grant disbursement event in Ibadan, the First Lady was represented by the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Tamunomini Makinde, who described the initiative as both a gesture of compassion and a demonstration of Mrs. Tinubu’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially those at the grassroots.
