Ekiti Labour leaders endorse Oyebanji’s re-election bid

The leadership of Labour unions in Ekiti State has endorsed Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term in office, citing his exceptional commitment to workers’ welfare and all round development of the state for its decision.

Speaking at a Labour Round Table Meeting with the Governor at Lady Jibowu Hall of the Government House in Ado Ekiti, the Labour leaders promised to continue to support the governor in the realisation of his lofty policies and programmes aimed at achieving his shared prosperity agenda.

In their separate remarks, the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC),, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde,, Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sola Adigun, and Chairman of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Oluseye Babatunde, commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of workers, which include timely payment of salaries, clearing of over nine months salary arrears and leave bonuses, prompt payment of pension and gratuity, payment of financial benefits tied to promotions, approval of promotions up to date, increment of car and housing loans as well as approval and payment of one of the best minimum wage table in the country, thereby setting a benchmark for other states.

According to them, the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage, among other gesture of the governor, underscore his understanding of the economic realities facing workers and his dedication to alleviating their burdens.

The labour leaders said it was the first time since the state was created that workers got what was due to them without agitation and confrontation, adding that the governor’s policies have not only elevated workers’ welfare, but have  also transformed Ekiti into a model of sustainable development.

Describing the governor as God sent and answer to Ekiti workers’ prayers, the union leaders said: “When people say this has not been done, that has not been done, I smile and say you don’t know the kind of leadership we have in Ekiti State, all the workers agenda is on the governor’s table and he goes through it every day.

“Your Excellency thank you for the minimum wage you approved. My colleagues and I will recall when negotiating for N13,000 minimum wage, it was returned to us for negotiation more than three times, and after a year it was given approval, but lo and behold when we were dealing with this N70,000 minimum wage and I saw what was there, I told the panel that my people would rejoice when this would be signed and it didn’t  take long for you to approve. Thank you, Mr Governor for making us proud.”.

The Head of Service, Dr (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi, lauded the governor for his exceptional dedication to workers’ welfare, disclosing that in the last 12 months, the governor approved over N30 million to address health challenges faced by public servants, the gesture, which according to her, demonstrated his genuine concern for the well-being of the workforce.

The Special Assistant on Labour Matters, Comrade Kayode Fatomiluyi, appreciated the governor for not disappointing the workforce by fulfilling all the promises he made to them during electioneering campaign

Responding, Governor Oyebanji, who expressed his gratitude to the union leaders for what he described as an uncommon gesture for labour leaders to speak of a government in such manner, said appreciation should go to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose visionary reforms had freed resources that significantly empowered the state to address pressing needs and deliver impactful projects that improved the lives of the people.

  • Oyo Speaker worried over poor implementation of anti-open grazing law

Oyo Speaker worried over poor implementation of anti-open grazing law

Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin has expressed concern about the poor implementation of Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law and Oyo State Security Network Agency Law, which established Amotekun Corps amid the current security challenges in the country.

He lamented the problems faced by personnel of Amotekun Corps, with the security challenges they encountered in line of duty.

Speaking yesterday during a plenary session on a motion presented on his behalf by the Chief Whip, Gbenga Oyekola, Ogundoyin emphasised the need to revisit and strengthen the enforcement ‘’of these laws to tackle persistent security and agricultural challenges across the state.’’

The motion called for post-legislative scrutiny of the two critical laws aimed at curbing open grazing, reducing farmer-herder conflicts and enhancing state-wide security.

The Speaker said security remained inimical to improved farming that would also culminate in food security and job creation, stressing that the heightened farmers/herders crisis in other states such as Borno, Yobe and Benue called for concern and was a wake-up call on the state government.

Ogundoyin lamented that despite the passage of the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law in October 2019, and the establishment of the Amotekun Corps under the Oyo State Security Network Agency Law in March 2020, issues such as manpower shortages, poor sensitisation and lack of clear reporting structures had continued to hinder their effectiveness.

“The motion marks a significant step toward reinforcing security frameworks and safeguarding the well-being of Oyo State residents.

“As we pioneer the post-legislative scrutiny unit in Oyo State House of Assembly, I decided to come up with the motion as its first assignment and responsibility. With this, we remain committed to ensuring every law passed serves its intended purpose and responds to emerging challenges.”

He highlighted ongoing complaints from farming communities and rural dwellers over recurring incidence of farmland destruction, threats of kidnapping and general insecurity linked to illegal grazing.

In the light of these concerns, Ogundoyin proposed that the Post Legislative Scrutiny Unit, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, should undertake a comprehensive review of the two laws.

This review, he said, would include wider consultations with stakeholders, including farmers’ associations, herder groups, traditional rulers, community leaders and the leadership of the Amotekun Corps, with the goal of identifying legal gaps, addressing ambiguities and proposing necessary amendments.

The Speaker also urged the executive arm of government, through relevant ministries, to scale up public awareness campaigns and ensure Amotekun Corps is adequately equipped and empowered to enforce the laws effectively.

Also, the House mandated its Committees on Security and Strategy, Agriculture and Rural Development to investigate the operational challenges facing law enforcement and to propose strategic interventions to improve state-wide security coordination.

Lawmakers across the chamber unanimously supported the motion, recognising its critical role in adapting to the evolving security and agricultural landscape in the state.

They reiterated that bolstering the laws would protect lives, enhance food security and stabilise rural communities.

The Assembly directed its Committees on Business and Rule, Agriculture, and Security to work in concert with the Post Legislative Scrutiny Unit to achieve the desired outcomes.

  • Jesus Market initiative brings relief, hope to Ogbomoso community

Jesus Market initiative brings relief, hope to Ogbomoso community

Residents of Ogbomoso in Oyo State are feeling a renewed sense of hope following the launch of the Jesus Market initiative by True Worshippers Church, Oke Anu.

The initiative, which began in August 2025, is aimed at easing the burden of rising food prices for people across the five local government areas in the town.

The project, co-founded by Rev. Niyi Adebayo and his family, offers basic food items and household goods at significantly reduced prices—some as much as 45 percent lower than market rates. The elderly, physically challenged, and widows receive their items completely free.

“We started the Jesus Market because we saw how people were struggling just to afford a meal,” said Rev. Adebayo, a philanthropist and senior pastor of the church. “It was time to stop watching and start doing something.”

Operating from the church premises, the Jesus Market quickly became a place of refuge for thousands of people, regardless of tribe or religion. Long queues of residents were seen during every market day, with some expressing gratitude not just for the goods, but also for the sense of care they received.

“I was shocked when I was given food without paying a kobo,” said Mrs. Rukayat Adebayo, a 68-year-old widow. “In this economy, it feels like a miracle.”

The initiative also supports the education of orphans and underprivileged children through scholarship schemes.

According to Rev. Adebayo, education is a long-term solution to poverty. “We believe that giving a child an education is better than just giving handouts,” he said.

The market’s success has not gone unnoticed. It has been featured on state and national news channels, including BCOS and NTA, with many praising its transparency and impact.

Traditional rulers, including the Soun of Ogbomosoland, have also commended the effort. “The Jesus Market has united our people and shown that help can come from within,” said one of the local chiefs.

Importantly, the entire N14 million cost of running the market came from the personal funds of Rev. Adebayo and his family. “There was no government or political money involved,” he clarified. “This is purely about love and service.”

Beyond shopping, the market has become a space for social connection. Residents not only buy food, but also interact, encourage one another, and sometimes even pray together.

“This is not just a market, it’s a movement,” said Deaconess Funmilayo Adeyemi, a church volunteer. “We’re showing that when people come together with love, great things happen.”

With plans to continue the initiative through December 2025, the church hopes its model will inspire others across Nigeria.

“We pray that more people, churches, mosques, and individuals will start something similar in their communities,” Rev. Adebayo said. “If we wait for the government alone, we may wait too long.”

As economic hardship deepens across the country, the Jesus Market remains a shining example of how compassion and community-driven efforts can bring lasting change.

Renewed Hope Agenda: Group rallies Somolu residents on development plan

A group, SomoLondon Movement has rallied all residents in Somolu Local Government Area in Lagos State on its plans to open up the LGA for robust development initiatives.

The Movement, according to its Convener, Gbenga Abdulai said, the plans were in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Participants for the submit drawn across various sub sectors gathered to discuss a 10-year development blue for the local government.

National Union Of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, represented by

Olawale Jayeola, lamented lack of designated garages and parks in Somolu, which according to him, causes congestion and indiscriminate parking in the area.

Jayeola said apart from the risk posed by indiscriminate parking, lack of designated garages also made his members vulnerable to incessant crack down by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Taskforce, adding” this way, we are made to suffer consequences of a problem we did not create.”

In their respective submissions at the Summit, representative of Market Associations, Chief Mrs Olufojude and her counterpart representing People With Disability, PWD, Ladipo Oluwakemi said though they were impressed by the strides of President Tinubu in the area of grassroots development, there was still need need for more inclusivity.

According to them, it is only through inclusivity that their members and the masses can be carried along and encouraged to contribute to the process of nation building and grassroots development.

In his response, Abdulai, said SomoLondon Movement had encapsulated sustainable solutions in its 10-year Development Plan to ameliorate various socio-economic problems in Somolu.

Abdulai said, the 10-year Development plan designed by his team contained measures to crash food prices, reduce cost of accomodation, equip schools with state-of the-art laboratories, and improve road networks, among other things in the local government area.

He added that the needs have been identified to set up Somolu Local Government Governing Advisory Council and Somolu Stakeholders Monitoring Group.

He noted that the former would comprise of political leaders to advice the Chairman on the implementation of programmes as is the case with Lagos State while the latter made of representatives of the various socio-economic groups, would monitor project implementation and hold the Chairman accountable on his campaign promises.

Abdulai also added that his group would involve in massive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in all sectors, particularly, the education sector.

He said requirement for all-session supply of stationery, especially exercise books to schools could be met through collaborations between the local government and corporate organizations.

Abdulai said feasibility survey carried out by SomoLondon Movement revealed that corporate bodies, especially banks would always be willing to support the local government in the area of stationery supplies to schools, if given the opportunity.

“We can ensure that each child gets the quantity of exercise books he requires for each session with the support of corporate organizations. All we need do is to allow these corporate bodies promote their interest by branding the exercise books and they would be willing to fund production of the stationery.

“So the government does not have to provide budget for production of exercise books nor would parents have to bear the financial stress of procuring exercise books for their children.

“It’s going to be win-win for all the stakeholders, especially government and parents, considering the way rising cost of production has shot up prices of stationery.”

The group’s lead also identified skill acquisition as one of the measures for poverty reduction in the society.

He said appropriate focus must be placed on the welfare of apprentice artisans to reduce the rate of truancy or malingering in the course of training.

He said apprentice artisans also deserved free feeding like their counterparts in schools, adding that this is one practical way of actualizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’ s Renewed Hope Agenda for youth development through efficient skill acquisition.

Meanwhile, the group has received commendations from various political leaders.

The group was hailed for the quality and ingenuity of various ideas in its 10-year Integrated development plan for Somolu.

Former Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs and Chairman of the Summit, Prince Bayo Osiyemi said Abdulai and his team of technocrats have demonstrated deep understanding of the various problems confronting grassroots development and solutions to them.

In his remark, a political leader, Somolu/Bariga Federal Constituencies, Apostle Peter Oyewusi commended Abdulai and his team for raising the bar for grassroots development strategies.

Kweme monarch endorses Princess Oluremi for Badagry West chairmanship, warns against religious division

The Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Sejiro Olalekan James, has issued a strong warning to self-styled APC leader in the community, cautioning him against fanning the flames of religious tension in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The monarch gave the warning on Wednesday when Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose visited his palace to officially declare her intention to contest the chairmanship of Badagry West LCDA under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking firmly, Oba Sejiro emphasised the need for peace and unity, condemning any attempt to use religion as a political weapon.

“We must not allow anyone, no matter their position or ambition, to ignite a religious fire in Badagry West,” he stated, pointedly addressing the alleged actions.

Demonstrating strong traditional support, Oba Sejiro also announced that all royal fathers in Badagry West LCDA have endorsed Princess Oluremi’s candidacy.

He said the backing was a matter of fairness and justice, highlighting that while other wards have previously produced council chairmen, Ward C — Princess Oluremi’s ward — has not had the opportunity.

“Even my own sister showed interest in contesting, but I told her clearly that equity must prevail,” the monarch added. “This is not about family or sentiment, but about competence and fairness.”

Oba Sejiro declared Princess Oluremi the consensus APC candidate and instructed the chief priest of Kweme Kingdom to perform traditional rites in her honor — a cultural act of spiritual endorsement.

Princess Oluremi, daughter of HRM Oba Oyekan Adekanmi Ilufemiloye Ajose Posii III, the Alapa of Apa Egun Awori Kingdom, was accompanied by party stakeholders, including Chief Ade Agoro, Mr. Peter Atindekun, Hon. Cosmos Adeniran, and Hon. Shedrack Awhansu.

Following the Kweme palace visit, the campaign train proceeded to the palace of the Oba of Apa, where her father, Oba Ajose Posii III, emotionally revealed that he had initially been against her political ambition.

However, he said the collective voice of the community’s royal fathers had turned that opposition into acceptance.

Princess Oluremi described the moment as “a new dawn” and pledged to serve with integrity and a commitment to the people if elected.

With both traditional and political backing, her candidacy represents a unifying force in the lead-up to the local government elections.

Ekiti lawmaker seeks revival of Omoluabi values

A lawmaker representing Ado Constituency 1 in Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Ayodeji Adegbite, has called for state-wide campaign to revive Omoluabi values and ethos.

He said the Yoruba value system embodied integrity, honesty and respect for elders.

According to him, the re-awakening of the Omoluabi values is necessary to combat the rising wave of anti-social behaviour among youths in the state.

Adegbite made the call while moving a motion on the need to revitalise and promote the concept of Omoluabi among children and youths.

His motion was seconded by Temitope Longe, representing Oye Constituency 1, who described the Omoluabi value system as a concept that embodied the best of Yoruba culture and tradition.

Adegbite lamented that the erosion of the values had led to negative effects, including cybercrime, internet fraud, cultism, drug abuse and money rituals.

“We need to take the bull by the horns and embark on a state-wide sensitisation and campaign programme to promote Omoluabi values,” he said.

“This will help to guide our youths towards the paths of integrity, excellence and responsible citizenship.”

Adegbite urged the Ministry of Education Information and Value Orientation to take the lead in organising the campaign, which, he believed, would help to safeguard Ekiti’s cultural values and protect the future of its youths.

He admonished his colleagues in the assembly to rise against the menace by safeguarding the cultural values and protecting the future of youths ‘’through the revitalisation of moral compass in our society and guiding the next generation towards the path of integrity, excellence and responsible citizenship.’’

    Court revokes monarch’s co-defendants’ bail

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has revoked a bail granted to Chief Sunday Aderinto and Adejare Adeleru, two of the defendants standing trial along with Oba Solomon Akinola, the Oloko of Oko, in a case of alleged land grabbing and attempted murder.

Other defendants in the case are Chief Jimoh Asimiyu, Timothy Aderinto, Matthew Akintaro, Rafiu Ganiyu, Samson Ogunmola, Zacheus Adeleru, Kamorudeen Ajibade, Raji Rasaq, Mutiu Arowosaye, Oyeyemi Oyelekan, Olusegun Oyelekan and Sheriff Adio.

Justice Kareem Adedokun revoked the bail of the two defendants after he was informed by the prosecutor, Mr Isa AbdulAzeez, that the duo were among those that launched fresh attack on Aagba community on April 5.

The judge said bail could be revoked when a defendant facing trial committed a fresh offence.

He thereby ordered the two defendants to be remanded at Agodi correctional facility.

Justice Adedokun issued a bench warrant on Aderinto, the fourth defendant, Akintaro, the fifth defendant, Ganiyu, the six defendant, Ogunmola, the seventh defendant, Adeleru, the ninth defendant and Adio, the 15th defendant for their absence in court.

The court said Akintaro, popularly called Paimo, who had been constantly absent from court proceedings on the excuse of being mentally unstable, must be brought to court on the next adjourned date, May 13, either dead or alive.

AbdulAzeez had told the court that a fresh attack was launched on Aagba village, which led to the burning down of no fewer than nines houses, including the house of Baale of Aagba, Chief Adesola Ajiboye.

He said the incident claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman, Madam Rachael Bamidele, adding that properties were also destroyed.

Defence counsel Hakeem Sabana said he was not aware of the fresh attack, noting that he was no longer representing the first, second, third and seventh defendants.

The Baale of Aagba, Chief Adesola Ajiboye, who is an eyewitness and a victim of the fresh attack, told the court that his house, belongings and car were burnt.

  • ‘Obasa’s removal as Lagos Speaker procedurally wrong’

‘Obasa’s removal as Lagos Speaker procedurally wrong’

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of an Ikeja High Court has quashed the impeachment of the reinstated Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

The court awarded N500,000 to the Speaker as damages.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13 by a majority of the lawmakers.

The court held that the action of the majority of the lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, who emerged as the new Speaker then was unconstitutional and illegal.

Justice Pinheiro also set aside other resolutions and decisions made from the controversial sitting of January 13.

Read Also: Varsities, polys, others grapple with new operational guidelines

The judge declared that by Section 101 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and by Order 5 Rule 18 (2) of the Lagos State House of Assembly Rules and Standing Order, the sitting of the house during recess, without the Speaker reconvening or authorising another individual such as the Majority Leader or Minority Leader to do so was a nullity.

The judge declared that such sitting without the directive of the Speaker was not only illegal, but also unconstitutional.

Obasa began the suit by way of Originating Summons on March 3, against the House of Assembly, his deputy and 32 members of the House of Assembly.

Five other lawmakers were also later joined as defendants by an order of the court.

The claimant had challenged his impeachment following allegations of financial impropriety and gross abuse of office levelled against him by 36 lawmakers.

Though he was reinstated on March 3, after a political mediation by the All Progressives Congress (APC), he pressed on with the case in court through his lawyers, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) and Prof. Joshua Olatoke (SAN) on the grounds that there were “unresolved live issues” in the dispute.

After seven interlocutory rulings, judgment was delivered yesterday.

The 1st, 2nd as well as 3rd to 36th defendants, represented by Femi Falana (SAN), Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Ola Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika, filed preliminary objections.

They had insisted in their applications that the court lacked the jurisdiction to meddle in the internal affairs of the House of Assembly, as both organs of government were equal before the law.

But, the trial judge dismissed their applications, holding that “the court will only intervene where there is breach of the Constitution.

“I agree with the claimant’s counsel that the facts of this case entitle the court to intervene. If the suspension isn’t in line with the constitution, it is right for the aggrieved person to go to court”, the trial judge held.

In another ruling, the court held that the matter wasn’t totally an academic exercise, to the effect that nowhere in the March 3 sitting where the claimant was reinstated nor was any resolution moved nor adopted, which extinguished the contentious proceedings of January 13.

“A suit is academic when it has no benefit, value or relevance to the claimant. It can’t be said to be academic simply because the acts complained of have been corrected.

“The issues of legality of the impeachment are still alive. The claimant’s prayer that records of his impeachment be expunged can’t be said to be embarking on an academic exercise, as the allegations levelled against him are grave and weighty allegations, in which he says his right to fair hearing was breached.”

The judge also said failure to institute the case by a writ of summons, instead of through an originating summons, didn’t vitiate the action, as the court would evaluate the supporting documents filed by all the parties and ensure substantive justice in the matter.

In the judgment, the court held that the rules and standing orders of the Lagos House of Assembly are legally binding on the lawmakers, as they are a subsidiary legislation that complements the constitution.

It also held that fair hearing is a constitutional requirement, which must be complied with.

The court had declared inter alia, that the purported sitting on January 13 wasn’t properly constituted and that the removal of the principal officers wasn’t done in line with Section 92(2) of the Nigerian Constitution since the claimant wasn’t given the opportunity to defend himself, as he was not present at that sitting.
