Assembly asks Justice Commissioner to implement Tenancy Law

Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, to implement the Tenancy Law of 2015.

It said this would stop landlords from engaging in illegal and unfair practices, particularly excessive rent increases.

The lawmakers made the call at the resumption of sitting yesterday.

The house also resolved to call on the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, to sensitise the public by creating awareness on the rudiments of the Tenancy Law.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Sa’ad Olumoh on the need to curb excessive rent increment by landlords.

According to him, Section (37) of the Tenancy Law of Lagos State 2015 made provision against unreasonable increase in rent by landlords and also provided access to court for tenants seeking the protection of the law against such unreasonable increase in rent, thus making it illegal.

He added that the incessant increase in rent was contributing to high rate of homeless people in the state.

Lending his voice, Desmond Elliot said in his constituency, Surulere I, increment in rent had gone from 100 to 200 per cent.

He said the Tenancy Law was meant to regulate the activities of investors in the estate management industry and the need to review the two years agreement, commission and legal fees in the law.

Aro Moshood said many landlords increased rent without considering the income of their tenants, ‘’whereas the law states that the landlord cannot just increase rent without serving the tenant prior notification.’’

However, Shabi Adebola implored the government to live up to its expectation by providing low cost housing for the less privileged.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the law was sensitive ‘’and we should not rely on the information gathered. “We need to go beyond the issue of rent increment and consider the cost of building materials.’’

Obasa suggested the need for an interface between real estate agents and investors.

He directed the Committee on Housing, chaired by Ige Olusegun, to invite stakeholders and related agencies to have an interface, with a view ‘’to finding solution to this menace.’’

  • Ekiti engages facility manager for agro-cargo airport

Ekiti engages facility manager for agro-cargo airport

Ekiti State Government has engaged the services of a renowned Airport Facility Manager, AAC Management Ltd, for the management and operation of Ekiti International Cargo Airport, ahead of the beginning of commercial flight operations.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji said this yesterday while receiving top officials of the AAC Management Ltd, led by the Managing Director, Christophe Penninck, in his office in Ado-Ekiti.

He restated the commitment of the state government to ensure operations of the new airport meet best international standards in terms of facilities, safety and management, in order to make it attractive for local and international air travels.

The governor said his administration had deliberately taken aviation as major catalyst for growth and development in a bid to actualise the shared prosperity agenda of his government.

He said his administration was of the opinion that aviation would make a significance impact on the economy of Ekiti State, Southwest and Nigeria, adding that the state had done well to attract one of the  best hands in Nigeria to manage facilities at the airport and bring it to international standard.

Oyebanji hailed the managing director of the facility management company for the guidance he had provided for the state, which, according to him, had assisted the state to achieve certification with ease.

Government, he said, was not unmindful of the teething challenges in the smooth operation of the airport.

He, however, said such challenges were being handled, including getting Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to place the airport on the national grid, as well as partnering a private institution to link the airport with its Independent Power Plant (IPP).

The governor said he was excited to have the airport as a hub for Hajj and Christian pilgrimage operations, noting that the state was making efforts to ensure the Instrument Landing System (ILS) was installed at the airport before the end of the year, for effective night operations.

On the airport road, Oyebanji said Federal Government had already awarded contract of the road and that the contractor would soon begin work.

He disclosed that the ring road linking the airport road would be completed by June.

“For us as a government, we are desirous of doing well, we are desirous of attracting investors and tourists to the state. So, creating access through transportation is key. The conception of the airport during the last administration was a deliberate action aimed at making it a game changer to reposition transportation system in the state.

“We believe access to Ekiti State is key to our shared prosperity agenda. We don’t want an airport in name but one that meets all conditionality for 24 hours access. This is why whatever it’s going to cost us, we are going to put an ILS in place because for the airport to be competitive, we must put in that place, standard facilities that every airline will want to land there.

“We will build the traffic, we’ve done our own traffic studies. As at today, we have close to seven higher institutions in the state. We can also have passengers from parts of Kwara, Kogi, Osun and Ondo states. We are deliberate about our action and we know that very soon the airport will fulfil its potentials,” he said.

Penninck said the airport had the potential for rapid growth, as the state was aggressively attracting investors and industrialists, who would invariably need the services of the airport.

Penninck, who disclosed that the airport was already generating revenue for the state, stressed the need to motivate interested airlines to the airport.

He said he was desirous of ensuring that the airport made profit for the state as well as develop ability to run itself.

Fulani leaders protest arrest of herders, cattle in Oyo

Fulani leaders have protested the recent arrest and detention of some herders and their cattle in some parts of the state by the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority.

According to them, the remanded herders were innocent and know nothing about charges against them by the government enforcement authority.

‎Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Yakubu Bello and the Liaison Officer of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Adam Abdukadir alleged that the herders and their cattle were illegally arrested by Oyo Rule of Law Enforcement Authority.

‎They called for their inclusion as representatives of cattle rearers in the Rule of Law Enforcement Committee, saying an all-inclusive committee is key to maintaining peace across the state.

  • CSO faults Amnesty International over ‘Inflated’ death toll, defends FG’s response to Plateau attack

CSO faults Amnesty International over ‘Inflated’ death toll, defends FG’s response to Plateau attack

A civil society organisation based in Jos, Coalition for Peace and Security Monitoring in Nigeria (CPSMN), has condemned the latest report by Amnesty International on the recent attack in Zikke village, Bassa LGA of Plateau State, describing it as “grossly exaggerated, misleading, and detached from reality.”

In a statement released on Monday and signed by its Executive Director, Pastor John Bulus, the group accused Amnesty of fanning the flames of fear and tension with “fabricated figures and alarmist claims” that do not reflect the true situation on ground.

“We strongly reject the distorted narrative pushed by Amnesty International. Their claim that 1,336 people were killed in just three months in Plateau State is not only outrageous but completely unverified. Where is their evidence? Who gave them these numbers?” Bulus queried.

According to the group, CPSMN has been on ground in Zikke and other affected communities, assessing the situation, supporting survivors, and working closely with local leaders and security agencies.

“While we acknowledge the attack in Zikke and mourn the lives lost, we will not sit back and allow a foreign NGO with no presence here to weaponise our pain for global headlines,” the statement said.

Pastor Bulus maintained that the federal and Plateau State governments have continued to intensify security operations in volatile areas, adding that collaborative efforts between the military, police, and local vigilante groups have significantly reduced the scale of violence in recent months.

“It is irresponsible and dangerous for Amnesty International to overlook these efforts and spread narratives that only embolden criminals and discourage citizens. Our communities are not abandoned — they are being protected.”

He also criticised Amnesty’s call for independent investigations, saying the group has no credibility to make such demands when it has consistently ignored government responses and local efforts at peacebuilding.

“We challenge Amnesty International to provide a list of the names, dates, and locations of the so-called 1,336 victims. Until then, we consider their report nothing more than a sensational, data-free attack on the Nigerian state,” the CPSMN declared.

The group further urged the international community to disregard Amnesty’s “reckless propaganda” and instead support homegrown solutions being championed by civil society, religious leaders, and security stakeholders on the Plateau.

“Nigeria needs partners, not provokers. The people of Plateau State need healing and unity — not global organisations stoking division from a distance,” Bulus added.
