The chairman, who quoted Governor Seyi Makinde, said everything required for wide-bodied aircraft to take off from and land at the airport had been done.

Atere said: “That was why the wide-bodied aircraft that conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Ibadan for the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, was able to land at the airport in September. The aircraft also took off from the airport seamlessly.

“The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development visited the airport twice before the President visited and were satisfied with what they met on ground. So, everything is set for our pilgrims to take off from the airport. There should not be any hindrance to our people taking off from the airport for the 2026 hajj pilgrimage.”

According to him, “beyond figures, the heart of the budget lies in its commitment to improving lives and safeguarding the future of residents”.

He urged all commissioners and accounting officers to defend their budget proposals transparently and ensure effective implementation for the benefit of the people.

“Mr. Speaker and the Honourable members, as we look to the year 2026, I am confident that, with divine guidance and our collective  resolve, Ogun State will continue to chart a path of sustainable growth and shared prosperity,” the governor said.

  • ‘Tinubu’s reforms okay’

    ‘Tinubu’s reforms okay’

A political support group, Sunshine Grassroots Network (SGN) in Ondo State, has said the far-reaching economic reforms and stabilisation efforts being undertaken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would secure him a second term.

The group, representing members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), who recently integrated into the All Progressives Congress (APC), said it was committed to mobilising support for President Tinubu ahead of 2027 general election.

Speaking yesterday at its group’s secretariat in Akure, the Director-General of SGN, Dayo Awude, said President Tinubu’s “tough but necessary” economic decisions had begun to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth despite the current hardships faced by citizens.

Awude listed key reforms -including fuel subsidy removal, elimination of policy inconsistencies and stabilisation of the external reserves – as steps that were correcting long-standing structural defects and restoring economic discipline.

Describing the previous fuel subsidy regime as a “cesspool of corruption,” Awude said it had drained national resources and enabled a few privileged individuals to siphon the country’s wealth.

“Despite the hydra-headed challenges confronting our country, we believe it is essential to keep our people informed of the successes we have achieved and the strides we are making as people and as a country.

“To leap into a steady future, we need to know where we were coming from. Prior to the Tinubu administration, we were faced with the cesspool of corruption called petroleum subsidy, a platform through which our patrimony was siphoned by the privileged few; persistent economic instability; inflation due to inconsistent monetary policies; decay of critical infrastructure, among others,” he said.

Awude, however, added that the reforms had begun yielding results, noting that Nigeria’s external reserves rose to $43.197 billion as of October 31, 2025.

The SGN DG cited recent assessments by World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Lamido Sanusi, both of whom said the Nigerian economy was stabilising and on a path to recovery.

He said the duo’s endorsement reflected growing confidence in the Tinubu administration’s fiscal direction.

Awude also highlighted President Tinubu’s “unprecedented attention” to Ondo State, referencing the appointment of two ministers from the state.

He lauded the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for ongoing reforms in passport issuance, border security and airport modernisation, including the new e-gate installations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport.

The group also commended President Tinubu for the ongoing federal road projects in the state, including: Akure–Ondo–Ore dualisation, Akure–Ado-Ekiti dual carriageway, Ilesa–Akure–Benin road and Lagos–Calabar coastal highway (expected to pass through Ondo), saying the projects reflected the state’s growing strategic importance under the current administration.

Acknowledging the recent spike in insecurity, Awude expressed optimism about Tinubu’s measures, including the declaration of a state of emergency on terrorism and moves to amend laws to enable state policing.

He called for expedited recruitment into the Army and Police to bolster national security.

Awude reiterated that the SGN’s mandate was to enlighten Nigerians on the gains of the Renewed Hope agenda and mobilise grassroots support for the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Together, we will work towards a brighter future for our country and all our citizens,” he said.

‘Draw strength to carry on’ – Ibori tells Segun Awolowo’s widow

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, has urged Bola, the widow of the late Segun Awolowo jnr, to find strength in the glowing tributes poured on her husband following his passing.

The late Segun, grandson of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at the age of 62.

Speaking on Tuesday night at the Night of Tributes held in honour of the late lawyer and former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, Ibori described Awolowo as a humble, dignified, and impactful public servant whose legacy will endure.

Addressing the widow directly, Ibori said, “All we will say here and all you have heard is for you to draw strength to carry on. Our guy was great.”

The former governor recalled that he was attending a similar tribute event for the late Oskar Ibru when news of Awolowo’s death reached him, describing the moment as a painful irony.

“My first thought was, ‘What a season!’ It was a life fully lived in all its chapters. To be honest, I never imagined it would come so soon. We all knew he was struggling, but that did nothing to soften the blow. The reality came with such weight, bringing profound shock and sadness,” he said.

Ibori praised Awolowo’s calm disposition, integrity, and devotion to service, noting that despite his lineage, he carried the Awolowo name “not as a crown but as a responsibility.”

According to him, the late Awolowo distinguished himself in public service, especially during his tenure as NEPC chief, where he championed Nigeria’s non-oil export drive with vision and diligence.

“He performed exceptionally well. He was not there for the title but for tangible results. He was a true servant of the nation,” Ibori stated.

He added that Awolowo’s life reflected humility, discipline, and purposeful leadership, describing him as “a bridge between a storied past and a hopeful future.”

The former governor extended condolences to the Awolowo family and all who knew him, praying for comfort and strength in their time of grief.

“Segun Awolowo jnr’s life reminds us that true impact is often made, not with fanfare but with consistent principled action. He was a bridge between a storied past and a hopeful future, demonstrating how to honour one’s heritage while carving out a distinct and impactful path.

As we mourn his passing, we extend our deepest condolences to the entire family, led by his wife Bola and all who knew and loved him. May they find comfort in the respect and affection that his life has inspired. His was a life well lived, though it ended too soon. He embodied grace under pressure, service over self, and the enduring power of a good name. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Rest in peace, Shegee. Good night,” Ibori concluded.
