ReportHer Awards: Media praised for advancing women’s representation

The Chief Executive Officer of Women Radio 91.7FM, Toun Okewale-Sonaiya, has reiterated the organisation’s resolve to foster gender equity within Nigeria’s media space as the station hosted the 2025 edition of the ReportHer Awards in Lagos.

The event, themed “Celebrating and recognizing media organisations that prioritise women’s representation and empowerment,” was aimed at strengthening national commitment to improving women’s visibility, leadership, and fairness in media representation and ensuring that Nigeria’s narrative platforms reflect equity, dignity, and shared participation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Okewale-Sonaiya described the event as a moment of fulfilment and gratitude, noting the remarkable turnout of media practitioners and the opportunity to acknowledge their role in amplifying women’s voices in public discourse.

She explained that the purpose of the awards is to recognise organisations that actively prioritise women’s representation, not only by featuring them in coverage, but by ensuring they are visible in data, quoted as credible authorities, and included in decision-making tiers within news institutions.

“The objective of the ReportHer Awards is to identify and recognise media houses that go out of their way to intentionally and deliberately report women,” she said.

She added that the evaluation extended beyond editorial content to workplace culture, including policies on maternity and paternity leave, childcare support, and flexible work arrangements.

“We looked at media houses that have more women in decision-making positions, and those that create a conducive environment for women in the workplace,” she added.

Okewale-Sonaiya stressed that Women Radio and its partner organisation, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), played no role in determining winners.

“There were three credible, independent judges. We did not influence their work at all,” she said.

This year, out of 72 nominations received, only four winners emerged, reflecting strict selection standards. Okewale-Sonaiya commended recipients, noting that one organisation offers six months of fully paid maternity leave with flexible arrangements afterwards.

“To all the winners, we say thank you for making it possible for women to thrive,” she said.

She urged the broader media sector to intensify efforts towards gender-sensitive reporting and inclusive newsroom culture.

“My message to every other media: let us do more in what we’re doing.”

Executive Director and CEO of WSCIJ, Moturayo Alaka, said the award represents a continuing effort to drive gender equity across sectors, particularly within media institutions.

“This event for us at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism is another push in addition to what many organisations and individuals are doing to ensure equity for women,” she said.

Alaka noted that although women and men are equals, access to leadership, political visibility, and economic opportunity remains imbalanced.

She emphasised that the media, as a “moral agency for the community,” must embody the values it advocates.

“The media must go to justice and equity with clean hands, so that within the media, representation is also balanced,” she said.

She urged organisations to examine their governance structures.

“Look at your board, see the gender composition. Are women decision-makers or only at the bottom? Have you created policies to raise women within your organisation?”

She also called for a shift in parental responsibility policies.

“Women take maternity leave, but do men take paternity leave? We also want them to stay home and take care of a child. You need a policy that supports that.”

Alaka further encouraged newsrooms to be deliberate about their sources and framing.

“The sources of your news are the female voices? Portray women as strong, capable, competent,” she said.

  • Abia traders under heavy taxation, exploitation by Otti’s appointees, APC chieftain alleges

Abia traders under heavy taxation, exploitation by Otti’s appointees, APC chieftain alleges

The immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Prince Paul Ikonne, has accused Governor Alex Otti of turning Aba markets into centers of intimidation, extortion, and unchecked harassment.

He expressed concerns over alleged untold hardship traders in Ariaria and other major markets in Aba are currently facing in the hands of government-backed tax collectors.

Ikonne, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary,  Dr. Ujo Justice in Abuja, alleged that the Governor’s appointees have weaponized taxation, turning a lawful civic responsibility into a brutal tool of oppression.

He recalled how Otti, during campaigns, criticised the ₦18,000 levy imposed by the former administration as “too high” and promised drastic reduction.

He said it was shocking the same Governor inflated the levy to an outrageous ₦36,000, pushing thousands of struggling traders into deeper economic misery.

Ikonne lamented that traders who can barely afford their daily survival are now confronted with an impossible choice: pay the inflated levy or lose their only source of livelihood.

According to reports from the markets, “government enforcers now move under the cover of night to seal shops of traders who have not paid the new high levy. By morning, affected traders are forced to either pay or face even harsher consequences. Those who attempt to unseal their shops by themselves are met with coercion, assault, and brutalization from a combined force of government-recruited thugs, police, and even naval personnel. In many cases, traders are re-arrested, their shops re-sealed, and they are forced to pay as much as ₦45,000.

“This is not governance; this is tyranny,” Ikonne declared.

The APC Chieftain added: “How can a Governor who receives over N30 billion in monthly federal allocation turn around to strangulate ordinary traders struggling to feed their families? What exactly does Governor Otti want from the meager earnings of the common man?”

He emphasised that while tax policies must be humane, fair, and considerate of the prevailing economic difficulties faced by citizens. When taxation becomes a political weapon—arbitrary, excessive, and enforced with violence—it becomes unbearable and unacceptable.

Ikonne further argued: “ I am worried that the present Abia state government has normalized the sealing of shops, properties, indiscriminate arrests, court summons, and humiliating treatment of Abians whose only crime is their inability to meet oppressive and inflated levies”.

“The rate of molestation and intimidation by agents of this government is alarming,” he stated. “No democratic society should subject its citizens to such cruelty. Governor Otti must remember that leadership is about service, not punishment.”

He called on the people and all well-meaning Nigerians to stand firm against what he described as a worsening pattern of anti-people policies, while he urged Otti to immediately halt the nocturnal sealing of shops, withdraw security operatives from markets, and review the draconian levies imposed on traders.

Ikonne reminded the Governor that was not licensed to impoverish, intimidate, or silence traders but an opportunity to ease burdens and improve their welfare.

  • Osun Governor Adeleke quits PDP

    Osun Governor Adeleke quits PDP

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke yesterday resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

He resigned barely 12 hours after the state chairman, Sunday Bisi, said the governor may not seek re-election on the platform of the party.

Adeleke said he left the party because of  the unresolved protracted leadership crisis that had polarized the party into two factions.

The governor, who forwarded his letter of resignation to the chairman of the party in Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, Ede, Osun State, thanked PDP for the opportunity given to him to serve the state on the platform.

The letter titled: “Resignation of my membership of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP)’ reads: “Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect.

“I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the People’s Democratic Party.”

Bis had told reporters in Osogbo, the state capital, that the governor, who had been adopted as the candidate, would not make use of the platform, unless the protracted leadership crisis is resolved.

Bisi also said Adeleke would only agree to seek re-election as PDP candiidate if the resolution of the crisis is accepted and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

There have been speculations that the governor had opened talks with the Accord Party for the purpose of adopting it as platform for the 2026 poll.

Due to the uncertainties in the party, the governorship primary earlier scheduled for today had been cancelled by the faction.

The leadership crisis had shifted to the court where legal fireworks would continue between the Damagun/Turaki/Makinde and Wike/Anyanwu factions.

The conflict neary robbed the party the opportunity of participating at the recent Anambra State governorship poll until former Senate President Bukola Saraki temporarily brokered peace between the two camps before Senator Samuel Anyanwu could agree to forward the name of Jude Ezenwafor to the electoral commission as candidate.

Both factions, amid suspension and counter-suspension of national officers, are fighting over the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

  • I’m aspirant to beat, says Oyebamiji

I’m aspirant to beat, says Oyebamiji

Foremost contender for the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Osun State 2026 governorship election, Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji, has declared himself the “aspirant to beat”.

Oyebamiji, popularly known as Ambo, spoke yesterday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja after submitting his nomination form for the December 13 primary election.

Oyebamiji told reporters that his antecedents speak for him.

“My antecedents are there. Everywhere I have served, I have delivered without blemish.”

“My two years at NIWA were phenomenal — a record unmatched since the authority was created. With God, everywhere I step, I succeed. We are working hard, and we are going to deliver the goodies to the people of Osun State.” “Everybody is backing me. The Almighty God is backing me. APC members and credible citizens of Osun are backing me. I have the courage and modesty to tell you that I am an aspirant to beat,” he declared.

Oyebamiji was commissioner for finance for eight years, spending four years in the Rauf Aregbesola Administration and four year with the Adegboyega Oyetola government.

The Ikire-born finance expert, was accompanied to the secretariat by political heavyweights in the state, such as two former Secretaries to the State Government — Kasim Adio and Prince Wole Oyebamiji; former Deputy Chief of Staff Prince Abdullahi Binuyo; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Protocol Ambassador Issah Adedotun Niniola; former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly Timothy Owoeye; Chairperson of the Federal Character Commission Alhaja Ayo Omidiran; and Nigeria’s first female Deputy Speaker Nike Omoworare.

Speaking on his plans, he said: “We have a population of about five million, blessed with rich human assets and mineral deposits. To drive these resources effectively, the state needs a manager with focus, a track record, credibility, knowledge, and character. I am that manager.”

When asked whether he could withstand fellow aspirants such as former APC National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Oyebamiji downplayed any notion of rivalry.

“Distinguished Senator Omisore is an elder we honour. There are about 14 aspirants, all credible. This contest is a friendly match. Whoever the elders choose, we will support. We are brothers. Unity of the party is our watchword,” he stated.

He added that the APC in Osun had not lost a single member in two years, insisting the steady growth of the party signaled organisation, cohesion, and readiness for victory.

Pressed to identify the political camp backing him, Oyebamiji responded that his support base cuts across the APC structure.

As the APC primary approaches, Oyebamiji positions himself as a technocrat-turned-politician ready to steer Osun “to the highest pedestal,” setting the stage for what promises to be a competitive and consequential governorship contest.

Osun 2026: Omisore, Alabi, five others submit nomination forms

    • Ex-Deputy Governor Alabi denies adoption claims

Ahead of the December 13 All Progressives Congress (APC) Osun State governorship primary election, all the nine aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the poll billed for August 8, 2026 yesterday  stormed the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to submit their nomination forms.

The aspirants are former deputy governor, Sen. Iyiola Omisore, development financier, Babatunde Oralusi, chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyedotun Babayemi and ex-deputy governor of the state, Benedict Alabi.

Others are business magnate and insurance expert, Dr Akinade Ogunbiyi, legal icon, Adegoke Adekunle (SAN), the only female aspirant and former lawmaker in Osun State House of Assembly, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Jimoh and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental, Sen. Babajide Omoworare.

Addressing reporters after submitting his forms, Alabi dismissed reports that the party had adopted a preferred candidate ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

Responding to speculations that some party elders had endorsed one of the nine aspirants as a consensus candidate, he insisted there was no such arrangement.

“I am the deputy leader of the party in the state. There is no adoption of any aspirant in Osun State for the forthcoming election,” he said.

Alabi added that he received the support and blessings of his former boss, former governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, before picking the forms.

Decrying the deplorable condition of the state, Alabi accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of failing to prioritise critical sectors in the state, particularly education and health care, describing the alleged neglect as a “glaring lack of commitment to the welfare of Osun citizens.”

“Performance is relative, and the facts on the ground are clear,” Alabi said. “While we see bridges and roads being built, there is hardly any progress in education or health care.

“Education and health are the backbone of a prosperous society, yet these sectors remain neglected under the current leadership. We cannot claim progress when our people are deprived of essential services,” he added.

Unveiling his plan for the state, the governorship aspirant said his administration would prioritise transparency, accountability and inclusivity, vowing to run a government that serves the people rather than political interests.

“As we seek to build a prosperous Osun, leadership must be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens. My mission is to restore education, health care and economic opportunities to the people, ensuring that no one is left behind,” Alabi concluded.

Former APC national secretary and governorship aspirant, Senator Omisore, said the state deserved a more serious, experienced and visionary leader, adding that governance was a solemn responsibility that should not be reduced to theatrics.

According to him, the image of a “dancing governor” does not reflect the gravity of the challenges facing Osun State.

“Osun does not deserve a dancing governor,” Omisore said. “Public office requires depth, discipline and focus. No leader who truly appreciates the weight of governance trivialises it.”

The governorship hopeful said tolerance, competence and leadership capacity, not entertainment, defined good governance, adding that the constant display of dancing within the corridors of power signalled a lack of seriousness toward statecraft.

“Leadership is not a show. It demands clarity of mind and purpose,” he said. “Governance is not salesmanship or entertainment. It requires substance, not choreography.

“Experience cannot be bought. Just like wine, the older it gets, the richer it becomes,” he said. “Osun is fortunate at this point to have someone with my depth offering himself again.”

Dismissing the leadership style of the incumbent governor, Omisore, who was a deputy governor in the state 20 years ago, said Adeleke lacked the capacity to even serve as a commissioner in his administration.

“Let me be frank with you: if I were governor, I could not appoint him as a commissioner,” Omisore said. “That shows the extent of the challenges we have faced over the last two to three years.”

Addressing reporters after submitting her nomination forms, the only female aspirant, Dr. Jimoh condemned the persistent exclusion of women in the state’s top political and governance structures.

The former lawmaker in the state pledged to champion women’s empowerment and implement transformative policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens in Osun State.

“If you empower a woman, you empower the nation,” she said, noting that women have historically been sidelined in politics, particularly in Osun State.

“But thanks to my party, APC, which is gender-friendly, that barrier is being reduced. All we need is a chance to demonstrate that women can lead and excel,” she maintained.

The former university lecturer said, if she picked the party’s ticket, priority would be given to education, social welfare, maternal and child health, youth employment and provision of essential amenities for communities across the state.

“Education is the bedrock of development,” she stressed, citing the late sage Obafemi Awolowo: “If you do not train the people around you, those you train will not benefit from the training you give them.”

She called for collective action to support women in leadership, urging citizens to back female candidates who are committed to progress.

“Together, we can create a future where opportunity, equity and progress are available to all,” she said, reiterating her vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Osun State.

Asked if she would be willing to step down for any of the other aspirants, Jimoh said: “I am in this election to win. I am not going to step down for anybody.”

Outlining his blueprint to revive the economic fortunes of the state, Mr. Adegoke (SAN) said his focus would be on tourism, agriculture and renewable energy.

The legal luminary, who said he had spent 14 years studying the natural resources of the state, noted that Osun State was sitting on “a goldmine of neglected assets” capable of transforming its fortunes.

“I have gone round the whole of Osun. I studied Osun like my palm,” he said. “This is not a state anybody should approach like a stranger. I came with knowledge—content knowledge that can drive real development.”

On agriculture, the governorship aspirant said Osun’s fertile land and large youth population positioned it for agro-industrial expansion, adding that he planned to link agriculture with processing hubs powered by renewable energy, turning local produce into export-ready goods while creating thousands of jobs.

“When industries grow, students and young people will stop looking for jobs and start creating solutions, just like Silicon Valley, where not everyone is a PhD holder,” he said.

  • Ogun govt to Daniel: your suspension a party affair

Ogun govt to Daniel: your suspension a party affair

Ogun State Government yesterday said the suspension of the senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, was a party affair and urged him to go and sort out his issues with the ward chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The state government stressed that the Dapo Abiodun-led administration could not re-admit the ex-governor into the Ogun APC fold when it did not suspend him in the first place.

It advised the senator to exert his energy and media efforts on proving his innocence to the party, instead of blaming everybody.

The government made this known  in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.

Akinmade said: “It was not the Ogun State Government that suspended Senator Gbenga Daniel; it was the party, APC in his ward, and the suspension was then ratified by the State Working Committee.

Read Also: DHQ convenes border security meeting over clash with Niger soldiers

“Before then, the party gave him ample opportunity to defend himself, but he shunned the summons.

“That he is launching media attacks on the state government rather than facing the party that gave him a ticket to contest election, and against which he committed punishable acts, is illogical.

“It shows he has no regard for the party or its leadership, and no sense of accountability or responsibility.

He is just chasing shadows, blaming everyone but himself because of his huge ego.”

The government also dismissed the allegation that it stopped the constituency projects being executed by Senator Daniel out of spite, explaining that the contractors handling the works did not conform to the Federal Ministry of Works’ specifications.

It said Daniel’s projects in some areas were stopped because they were substandard and did not meet Federal Government specifications, adding that the government had a constitutional right to ensure projects were done appropriately and in consonance with standards.

It noted that the contractors were instructed to provide approved specifications and drawings for the road projects that had been awarded to them.

This, the government said, would enable Ogun State Ministry of Works to do proper monitoring of the projects, adding: “Those contractors who complied have since been given the go-ahead to continue with the road projects.

“At the same time, a designated engineer from Ogun State Ministry of Works is assigned to conduct routine supervision to enforce compliance with the specifications.”

On alleged persecution of the senator by Governor Abiodun, Akinmade said the senator’s claims were laughable.

He said Daniel had consistently talked and acted as if he was still in charge of affairs as governor of Ogun State, adding that the senator wanted everyone to automatically kowtow to him no matter what he did.

He said: “Daniel claims that the government stopped his constituency project, a project meant to be executed with federal funds, simply because he was asked to follow due process. Is he the only federal lawmaker in Ogun State? Is he the only one executing constituency projects?

“Why is he the only former governor constantly at war against law and logic in Ogun State, and always staging a pity party using a pliant media whenever he is tasked with taking responsibility for his actions?

“In Ogun State today, there is peace and stability, unlike his crisis-ridden tenure when he was constantly at war with everyone in the state, including members of the state House of Assembly and the state’s representatives in the National Assembly. Daniel just can’t deal with not being in a position to manipulate things to his advantage.

“He cannot be bigger than the party that gave him a ticket for the Senate. He should sort out his issues with the party if he still has any shred of conscience or integrity.”

He added that the Ogun State Government had better things to do than to be constantly responding to Daniel’s tantrums.

    • Adeleke orders 24-hour curfew on community

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke yesterday declared 24-hour curfew on Igbajo town in Boluwaduro Local Government, as residents have clashed over the passage rites for the late monarch of the town, Oba Adegboyega Famodun.

The monarch, who died last Friday, was Osun State chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC). He was installed in 2022 as the 30th king of the town in the twilight of the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

He was later removed through an executive order by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who appointed Oba Ademola Makinde to replace him.

However, in January, Osun State High Court reinstated Oba Famodun, a decision that has been challenged in court.

The community has been in crisis over the authentic king, as the majority of the chiefs and heads of compounds pledged their loyalty to Oba Famodun.

After the Gbeleru Royal Family announced his death, traditionalists and chiefs of the town began the rites of passage, which some loyalists of Oba Makinde opposed, saying, “the town has one king who is alive and healthy.”

The loyalists started the clash on Sunday, which continued yesterday morning when chiefs and community members loyal to the late Oba Famodun stormed the market to shut it, to honour the late monarch.

Later, Governor Adeleke in a statement by his Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, announced an immediate 24-hour curfew, following breakdown of law and order.

The statement said: “According to intelligence report from the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Samuel Ojo, Governor Adeleke has announced lockdown of the town with the imposition of 24-hour curfew.

‘’The curfew, which is with immediate effect until peace is restored, is as a result of continued breach of law and order among the indigenes. A development which has been attributed to the demise of Oba Famodun.

“Governor Adeleke condemns the development with a declaration that his administration will not be a party to any civil disobedience capable of truncating the peace and harmony being enjoyed throughout Osun State, Igbajo inclusive.

“Governor Adeleke, in line with the new directive on the 24-hour curfew, issues a stern warning to the indigenes and non-indigenes to continue to toe the path of peace and order, as anyone found or caught in any act, openly or clandestinely, will be dealt with in line with the dictates of the law.”

  • ‘Delusions don’t win elections, performance does’

‘Delusions don’t win elections, performance does’

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has noted the latest political fantasy being peddled by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) – a party that cannot hold a worthwhile ward meeting, now suddenly seeking “citizens’ cooperation” to take over Lagos, a state globally acknowledged as Nigeria’s model for sustained governance, innovation and leadership.

The party in a statement yesterday in Ogba by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said: ‘’Let it be stated clearly: Lagos is not a laboratory for political apprentices. Lagos is not up for grabs Lagos is certainly not a charity project for emergency parties seeking relevance through laughable headlines.

‘’ADC’s posturing is nothing but a comical attempt to inflate political balloon with the hot air of wishful thinking. A party without structures, without ideas, without credible candidates and without electoral footprints cannot – and will not – take over a state built through decades of vision, continuity, competence and unmatched performance.’’

He said in 2023 and even before then, ADC struggled to fill a bus stop with its entire membership, adding that ‘’the same party is now promising to overrun a state with over 20 million people, world-class infrastructure and the most sophisticated electorate in Nigeria. Indeed, there should be limits to political comedy.’’

Oladejo said: ‘’We encourage the ADC to first take internal attendance at its next party meeting.

If they achieve a quorum, perhaps they can graduate to contesting councillorship seats before dreaming of Alausa.

‘’Lagosians know the difference between real governance and idle political theatrics.

They have witnessed transformative leadership from the days of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode and now Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu – leaders whose vision and continuity have placed Lagos on the global map.

‘’What exactly does the ADC offer beyond press statements and periodic fantasy-driven declarations? No blueprint. No record. No structure. No credibility.’’

The APC spokesman said ADC’s hallucination about “taking over Lagos” was dead on arrival because Lagos remained the stronghold of progressive politics and would continue to consolidate on decades of unmatched results.

‘’Our party remains deeply rooted at the grassroots, fully aligned with the aspirations of Lagosians, and committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

‘’The people of Lagos are not confused.

They know who works. They know who delivers.

They know who has a plan – and who merely has press releases.

‘’We advise ADC to focus on building a party before dreaming of governing a state. Lagos APC welcomes competition, but what the ADC brings is not competition – it is political comedy. And Lagosians are far too enlightened to be entertained by such amateur performances.

‘’Lagos is not in play. Lagos is not confused. Lagos is not an experiment. Lagos is firmly APC – in 2027 and beyond,’’ the statement said.

  • Oyebanji recalls sacked commissioners, forwards names to assembly for screening

Oyebanji recalls sacked commissioners, forwards names to assembly for screening

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has submitted a fresh list of commissioner–nominees to the House of Assembly as part of ongoing efforts to reconstitute his executive council (exco).

The nominees are the same former commissioners who served in his exco before it was dissolved on August 10.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, the decision to return the former commissioners followed series of consultations with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State and other key stakeholders.

Read Also: Tinubu meets former Defence Chief, Musa amid recent security concerns

The statement said: “The decision was hinged on the need for the party to go into the June 20, 2026 Ekiti State governorship election as a united family. It is believed that appointing a new set of commissioners barely seven months to the election can be counter-productive.

“Recall that the party leadership, the leadership of various towns and communities and other critical stakeholders, worked with the screening committee set up by the governor, in the selection, nomination and appointment of the commissioners and other appointees in 2023.

“Governor Oyebanji, had at the inception of his administration, said the party and leaders of various towns and communities in the state would play crucial roles in the process leading to the appointment of people into offices in order to make them accountable to the people.”

  • Why I won’t appear before Edo Assembly panel, by Obaseki

Why I won’t appear before Edo Assembly panel, by Obaseki

Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has given reasons he will not appear before Edo State House of Assembly Ad hoc Committee set up to investigate funding and ownership of the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) and Radisson Blue Hotel.

Edo Assembly set up the panel following a request by Governor Monday Okpebholo that it should probe funding and ownership of the projects, including extent of the state government’s N3.8billion investment in MOWAA and N28billion in Radisson Blue Hotel.

Obaseki is scheduled to appear before the committee on Thursday.

The committee had in a letter signed by its Secretary, Bekisu Wilson, listed other persons invited to include former Edo Finance Commissioner Mr. Joseph Eboigbe, ex-Attorney General of Edo State Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi and Managing Director, Tilbury House Nigeria Limited.

Others are Mr. Pramod Thorat, Project Manager of Hospitality Investment and Management Company (HIMC), Mr. Ugochukwu Anigbogu, Managing Director, Afrinvest Capital Limited, Managing Director, Meristem Trustees Limited and Managing Director, Emerging Africa Trustees Ltd.

The statement said attendance by Obaseki and others were required as part of the committee’s investigation.

Obaseki, who spoke through his media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, said it was offensive and laughable for the assembly to invite him over a matter that was already in court.

He said Edo Assembly should learn to know how the law worked.

The former Edo governor said he could not be subjected to answer separately on the same issue.

“It is subjudice for the former governor to appear before Edo Assembly in a matter already in court.

“Why subject him to another round of questioning on the same issues?”

Management of MOWAA had also refused to appear before Edo Assembly Ad Hoc Committee.

Its counsel, Olayiwola Afolabi, said the assembly could only make recommendations but that the court would make the final decision on the issues.
