Suspended Ekiti PDP candidate dumps Fayose

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ekiti North, Prince Funso Ayeni, has dumped the political family of ex-Governor Ayo Fayose and pledged support for the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

He attributed his decision to renounce membership of Fayose’s camp and join the mainstream of the party to the need to strengthen the party for victories and successes in the general election.

Fayose, who is loyal to the G-5 governors, is not supporting Atiku and stayed away from the presidential rally held on January 19 in Ado-Ekiti alongside seven National Assembly candidates, 20 State Assembly candidates and other loyalists.

Sequel to this development, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended the seven National Assembly candidates, including Ayeni, over alleged misconduct and anti-party activities.

But, the NWC, had through a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Saturday, announced the lifting of the suspension on Ayeni and the House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti North federal constituency II, Otunba Ajayi Babatunde Samuel.

According to the statement, the decision was sequel to the adoption of the report of the PDP disciplinary committee, which recommended lifting of the suspension on the ground that the duo had shown  remorse and apologised for their misconduct.

Reaction to the lifting of the suspension, Ayeni in a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti lauded the party national leadership for their painstaking efforts, not  only in repositioning the party, but also by galvanising members to work for the victory of the candidates in the forthcoming elections.

  • Foundation seeks electoral sensitisation by INEC

Foundation seeks electoral sensitisation by INEC

A foundation, the Centre for Disability Issues, has called for electoral sensitisation for its members, as being done in other countries.

It made this known in an open letter sent to the 36 governors, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters.

The letter, signed by the Coordinator of the foundation, Comrade Kehinde Oshilaja, said what was sauce for the goose was sauce for the gander, explaining that inasmuch as similar sensitisation was organised for able bodied people, it was also necessary that such sensitisation should be done for people living with disabilities across the states and the FCT.

“It is indeed a year of renewed hope for Nigerians, which no doubt demands participation of stakeholders, including Persons with Disabilities (PWDs),” he said.

The foundation suggested that a sensitisation programme be organised for persons with disabilities before the general election, which, among others, should comprise stakeholders in senatorial districts, zonal heads, religious leaders, monarchs, traders, civil societies and journalists.

It urged presidential and governorship candidates to come up with policies and programmes that would alleviate PWDs’ sufferings.

Oshilaja advised electoral officials to put in place structures for accessibility of polling booths and training in communicating with voters with hearing impairment.

He said INEC officials should assist the visually impaired in the absence of braille ballot papers, so that PWDs could vote independently without intrusion by relatives or party agents.

The project can easily be completed in one budget cycle through facilitation by an effective representative,” he said.

Sen. Adeola released N5 million for the market women at Oja Odan for the completion of a maize storage facility with capacity for 400 bags.
