Baby with two holes in heart needs N7.5m for surgery

The mere sight of one-year-old baby Leonard Chigozirim Alabi, with all sorts of wires and medical gadgets attached to his body evokes pity.

The little boy, born to Lucky Alabi, a driver, has been diagnosed with two holes in the heart and hence needs a whooping N7.5million urgently for surgical treatment in India, do avoid dire consequence.

Born December 25, 2021, Leonard’s father, Alabi Snr, told The Nation that he and the mother discovered that their little boy was having problems breathing normally when he was three months old. That was the beginning of their anxiety.

“We began to notice that his breathing was abnormal. In fact, there was a time he couldn’t even breathe and we had to rush him to a hospital, where we were told to do an eco-cardiograph test. That was when they discovered that he had two holes in his heart and that we would need to fly him to India for surgery. The medical team then told us to hold on for another four months when he would be six or seven months and ripe for surgery.

“Unfortunately, those three/four months were really trying, as we literally lived in and out of hospitals. There was a time he was even admitted for a whole month. At a point in July (2022), the problem became serious again and we rushed him to AMCAD in Abule-Egba; it was there that we were referred to X-Serve, a children Hospital in Surulere, Lagos.”

At X-Serve, they were told the surgery needed to be done as soon as possible, as time was ticking fast against their little boy.

Alabi Snr added that the family had also visited the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where after doing their bits, they told them the only option available was to fly the little boy abroad, preferably India.

He is therefore appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid, as he, as a poor driver does not have the means to finance the surgery, which, together with flight and accommodation, roughly amounts to N7.5million.

About 500 traders of the popular Mile 12 market have expressed support for the Lagos State Government move to renovate the facility.

This follows the move by an aggrieved party in the market who has sued the government.

In a letter addressed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday through their solicitors, Philip A. Eze & Co, the traders reiterated their unequivocal support for the remodelling project awarded to Dr. Chris Onyekachi of Total Value Integrated Services LTD.

The traders accused a self-proclaimed Iyaloja, Modupe Ojo and her allies of mandating a legal fee of N10,000 each with the threat to lock up the shops of those who fail to pay and support the attempts to resist the continuation of the remodelling project.

They stated they were not party or non-joinder to the suit NO/ID/646-IGCMW/2022 between the incorporated trustee of Orirere Community Leaders and Traders Association & others versus Kosofe Local Government Area Lagos State and others.

They noted the renovation to be done in phases is in their own interest in the long run.

Speaking with reporters yesterday, Emmanuel Omeri while acknowledging the exercise would cause them some discomfort in the interim, explained that there is a lot to gain after the completion.

Omeri advising the aggrieved party to join hands with the government on the project noted all the traders would be the eventual beneficiaries of the overhauled facility.

In the same vein, a female trader, Chinyere Peters said the benefits attached to supporting the government on the project outweigh the discomfort that comes with the process of achieving the desired result.

Stephen Agbedo advised the aggrieved party to sheathe their swords and join forces with the government for their common good.
