  • ‘Ignore Akeredolu’s promise to give us governor’

‘Ignore Akeredolu’s promise to give us governor’

The lawmaker representing Ilaje/Ese-Odo federal constituency and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next month’s general election, Mr. Victor Akinjo, has urged his Ilaje kinsmen to ignore promises by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu that the Ilaje would produce the next governor.

Akinjo, who is seeking a third term in the House of Representatives, spoke through the Director General of his campaign organisation, Jossy Ehinmore.

He was reacting to reports that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Information Commissioner, Donald Ojogo, was campaigning that only a win for the APC would guarantee that the governorship slot would come to Ilaje.

Akinjo said the Ilaje would not let go of the House of Representatives seat because it was their entitlement.

He urged the people of Ilaje to remember that no sitting governor of Ondo State had ever produced his successor.

Akinjo alleged that Governor Akeredolu had already signed a secret pact with his Finance Commissioner, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, who hails from Ile-oluji Local Government, to hand over power to him as his successor.

He said: “Ojogo and his campaign committee should go and look for other campaign tactics, and stop insulting the Ilaje nation by saying the  Ilaje must forego every of our entitlements to get governorship.

“They have been going all over Ilaje Local Government of the federal constituency, telling the constituents that Governor Akeredolu has said they have to support and make sure Ojogo wins the House of Representatives seat, if they want him to consider a successor from the Ilaje nation.

“Pa Adekunle Ajasin did not produce Adefarati, Adefarati did not produce Agagu, Agagu did not produce Mimiko and Mimiko did not produce Akeredolu. Therefore, Akeredolu too will not produce his successor.

“It is even more worrisome that the current APC led government in Ondo State has nothing to show in Ilaje since they came to power. Rather, they have squandered the money expected to get to the local government through Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

“I challenge Ojogo and his campaign team to name any OSOPADEC project instituted under the leadership of the current state government in Ilaje Local Government.”

  • Kwara revenue agency saves N3.9b

    Kwara revenue agency saves N3.9b

Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) says it has saved N3.9 billion in the last three years.

It added that it prevented the money from being allegedly expended on spurious consultancies as it was the case in the past.

The agency added that it had ended the era of bogus and often-opaque consultancy fees of the past.

It said it had saved taxpayers a humongous amount that could have gone to consultancies of all kinds if the former platforms had been retained.

In a statement, Head, Corporate Affairs, Titilayomi Ogunwale, said KWIRS still lawfully engaged consultancy firms like all revenue agencies in the world.

The statement said: “The Service is appalled by the weight of bile and determination of some persons to undermine KWIRS for their selfish gains.

“However, what keeps us above the malicious intent and envy is our professionalism, transparency and the huge gains so far made in raising the bar in revenue generation and good ethics.

“A report in an online medium purporting some imaginary mismanagement of any fund is an exercise in futility. Unlike in the previous regime, KW-IRS is today subject to strict fiscal discipline and monitoring at higher levels. It does not control its spending nor does it handle any fund anymore. This is an improvement in prudence, transparency and accountability.

“The savings from what was paid as consultancy before are now ploughed back to the public treasury for investment and development projects. It is this transparency and patriotic act of the current management that are being twisted by the detractors who are not used to such culture.

“The management team of KW-IRS has made corporate governance and due diligence its watchword, and will continue to enforce the doctrine to the letter in public interest.

“This possibly explains the relentless attacks on the government and KW-IRS. We are not deterred.

The Service is aware of the vast network of conspiracies to sully its image through propaganda and false equivalence as political campaigns begin. However, we shall remain true to our commitments to raise the bar in our service to the people of Kwara State without compromising the law or our ethics. We will not succumb to lies and blackmail of any kind.

“Members of the public are by this statement enjoined to ignore the falsehoods, join hands to build a more prosperous Kwara, and continue to play their lawful part of tax payment as and when due to support the developmental agenda of the government.”

“We will continue to find those that will collaborate with us. I recently met with two people who are highly placed in law enforcement and have decided that they are going to come and work with us by assisting with training, support and fundraising. I will unveil these people in the next couple of weeks and introduce them to you,” the governor stated.

Abiodun, on behalf of the state government, donated a sum of N10m to the Nigeria Legion and charged its personnel to continue to discharge their duties accordingly.

Abiodun, however, called on the people of the state and the country as a whole to see the remembrance of the country’s fallen heroes as an opportunity to appreciate their sacrifices by looking after the welfare of their widows and immediate family members, noting that they shouldn’t be left alone to weather the storm of loneliness.

He congratulated the Brigade Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala and his counterpart at the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Isa Abdullahi and Mrs. Archie- Abia Ibinabo, on their promotion to the rank of Major General in the Nigerian Army and Assistant Controller General of the NDLEA, respectively.

In his remarks, the state chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Master Warrant Officer Olumuyiwa Orukotan (rtd) commended Governor Abiodun for being a pillar of support to the Legion in the state.

He lauded Abiodun for empowering over one hundred and twenty widows in the last two years.

Police arrest man for allegedly defrauding POS operators

Men of the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Okorafor, for defrauding Point of Sale (POS) operators in Lagos State.

According to a statement it posted on its official Twitter handle on Friday, RRS explained that the suspect, who was caught in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) fraud, was arrested on Thursday in the Ojota area of the state.

The statement noted that investigations revealed that the ATM was used to collect various sums of money ranging from N52,000 to N5,500 in many POS points.

The statement read in part: “He(suspect) normally gives them a figure in seven, which the operator would enter into his POS (N52,000:00).

“Once the machine is handed to him to enter his PIN, he would cleverly delete two zeros (N5,200:00) before returning it to the operators.

The suspect, according to the statement has confessed to the crime.

”In his confession, he re-enacted the same fraud in five POS points yesterday around Ogudu GRA and Ojota before he was arrested in the evening.

Activist condemns killing of Lagos lawyer

An activist and president of Oodua People’s Congress-Reformed (OPC-R) Chief Oludare Adesope has condemned the killing of a Lagos-based female lawyer, Omobolanle, Raheem who was shot dead by an Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP), Drambi Vandi, on Christmas Day.

Adesope described the killing of innocent people by trigger-happy policemen as inhuman ‘’which should attract a new law to(punish) erring policemen.

He said: ‘’I have said several times, that policemen at checkpoints should only have a baton, tear gas, and whistle in their possession because some police officers cannot manage their anger and therefore should not have guns in their care. Killing a pregnant woman in the presence of her child is absurd and may register a significant trauma in the child’s memory.

Adesope commended the effort of the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and urged the governor to follow up on the matter until the deceased’s family receives justice.

He also thanked members of OPC-R for their loyalty and steadfastness in keeping faith with the ideals behind the establishment of the group and the interests of the Yoruba race.
