Passenger dies as boats collide at Badagry jetty

A boat accident at a jetty in a Badagry community in Lagos State has led to the death of a 32-year-old man.

The mishap, according to sources, occurred at the jetty on Thursday night when two boats, one coming from Badagry and another coming from Lagos, collided.

A resident, Victor Idowu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Badagry that the incident occurred at 10:05p.m, at a jetty in Akarakumo.

“The sound and voice of the boatmen woke up the residents of the community who came out to see what had happened.

“One of the passengers was crushed by the boat and fell inside the water, the residents and the boat man assisted to bring him out of the water.

“We brought him out of the lagoon and discovered that he had been injured in the chest.

“While some suggested that he should be taken to private hospitals, I told them General Hospital should be the best,” he said.

Idowu claimed that when they got to the hospital there was no doctor to attend the victim.

He said that the victim was given first aid treatment and was in pain until 4.10a.m when they took him away for X-ray.

“Coming back from the x-ray, he gave up the ghost immediately,” he said.

However,  Medical Director of Badagry General Hospital, Dr. Olatunde Bakare, explained that the man was brought into the hospital in the middle of the night with serious chest injury.

“His two ribs had been broken. We wanted to refer him to another hospital in Lagos because we could not handle his case.

“But we realised that if we sent him to Lagos then, he might not get to half of the way before he will die.

“So, we had to stabilize him; so, this morning, they had done X-ray for him.

“When he was coming out, he died due to the seriousness of the injury,” he said.

Bakare said the man was properly attended to by the staff of the hospital but his injury was fatal, which resulted to his death.

The Head of Operations, Lagos State Waterways Authority, Mr Ibrahim Famuyiwa, told NAN that one of their stakeholders in Badagry had reported the incident to him.

He said he was waiting to get the other side of the story from their staff working in the area in order to harmonise it.

Sanwo-Olu opens network of roads, jetty in Alimosho

•Gov, Adebule rally support for Tinubu, APC candidates

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday opened the Ishuti Road, Ishefun-Camp Davies-Ijon-Lasu Ojo-Ijo road network with jetty terminal, all at Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

He described the jetty as strategic to residents of the area as it connects them to Ogun State, thereby enhancing business and social activities between people of both states. The jetty will help travellers get to Ogun State within five minutes.

The governor thanked the people of Alimosho for their support, noting that the council area is the largest in Nigeria, and solicited their continued support, especially at the polls.

He said: “We just don’t want to come to Alimosho and garner votes, but we went to prove to the people that our government has a human face and is working for their good. We are a listening government, we understand what the people need which is why we have done all these.

“Please use these facilities very well, don’t destroy them because it’s for the people. Take ownership of these roads and jetties so they can serve you. I appeal to the CDAs and CDCs to ensure these facilities are well managed because they are meant to improve lives and make living more meaningful for the people.

“I also enjoin you to vote for our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) so that you will continue to enjoy these dividends of democracy. Alimosho is the home of votes so we will use our votes to silence the opposition. We don’t have to be violent, but we will speak with our votes. We just don’t want to come here and campaign or give rhetorics, but to assure the people that they are well loved.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied by members of the State Executive Council, also drove through the ongoing construction of Babafemi Dada Road and Bridge (Idowu Egba), Yinka Folarin, Jamie Lawal and Shalom Academy road network.

When completed, the Idowu-Egba bridge will reduce travel time from the Ayobo-Ipaja axis to Lasu-Iyana Iba by 45 minutes.

Special Adviser to the governor on Works and Infrastructure Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye described the projects as part of efforts by the Sanwo-Olu administration to improve the wellbeing of Lagosians. According to her, the efforts ‘speak to the fact that Alimosho local government area, like many others, has not been left behind in the infrastructure renewal plan of the state government.

She added: “The commissioning of these projects today is significant because it demonstrates the unwavering commitment of this administration in its determination to continually energise the local economy by providing essential infrastructure that would further promote economic development across the nooks and crannies of the state.

“For persons coming here for the first time, Ishefun Camp Davies, Ijon and Isuti axis are semi-urban settlements with a rapidly growing population that requires modern road infrastructural upgrades. The residents and road users have, over the years, clamored for an improvement in the hitherto, deplorable road ways. This is rightly so because they are strategic, giving their huge bearing capacity and connectivity. Happily, the narratives have now changed for the better courtesy of our visionary governor and deputy governor.

“These roads will greatly enhance vehicular movement towards Ipaja-Ayobo-Igando and its environs, as well as reduce incessant traffic gridlocks being experienced on the LASU- IBA road.

“Interestingly and of significance is the fact that they all lead to major hubs for water transportation to Agbara, Ishefun, and other coastal communities in Badagry and neighboring Ogun State, further confirming the strategy of linkage with our waterways, thereby deepening the Intermodal Transport System.”

The Ishuti Road is 3800m long and 10m wide, ending at the jetty connecting to the famous Totoro food market in Ogun State. The Ishefun – Camp Davies – Ijon Road is 7,639 meters long and 16.2 meters wide, while the Laisu Ojo-Ijo portion of the project is 1,190 metres long and 8 meters wide. The jetty component consists of a ticketing office, canteen, waiting area, car park, and pontoon.

Meanwhile, Gov Sanwo-Olu and All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos West Senatorial District Candidate Dr. Idiat Adebule on Friday urged the people of Alimosho to vote massively for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, themselves, and all APC candidates in the forthcoming election.

The duo spoke during a Mega Rally at Igando-Ikotun Secretariat, Alimosho.

Sanwo-Olu, who earlier inaugurated some projects in the area before storming the campaign ground, promised more developmental projects for Lagosians.

According to him, the campaign for his second term won’t stop his government from working and commissioning more projects.

He challenged Alimosho nicknamed ‘Tinubu’s Country’ to rise its appellation.

“By February, we want massive votes for Tinubu because Alimosho is Tinubu’s Country. Is it not so,” the crowd responded that Alimosho is truly Tinubu’s Country.

Sanwo-Olu introduced all APC candidates from Dr. Adebule to House of Representatives and Assembly candidates, urging the crowd to work for their victory.

Adebule thanked the crowd for their support.

She urged them to return all APC candidates.

According to her, a vote for Asiwaju Tinubu is a vote for Nigerian prosperity and great development.

She vowed to rally other legislative members if elected to better the lives of Nigerians through human-oriented bills.

The former Lagos State Deputy Governor also promised to place Lagos West Senatorial District and indeed Lagos State on a higher pedestal of excellence through legislative interventions.

“I will prioritise programmes that would engender economic empowerment and upliftment of the people of Lagos West through professional and vocational training as well as new skills acquisition including infotech training to harness the enormous talents of our youths,” she said.

  • Empowerment: Fadekemi Soetan rescues teenage girls, secures school placements in Ibadan

Empowerment: Fadekemi Soetan rescues teenage girls, secures school placements in Ibadan

In a remarkable gesture of compassion and leadership, gender advocate and Executive Director of the Girls Applause Initiative (GAI), Fadekemi Soetan, has brought new hope to dozens of teenage girls who once lived on the margins of society like hawking, begging, or trapped in unpaid apprenticeships across Ibadan.

The event, held at the Cultural Centre, Mokola, Ibadan, marked the official launch of the “Back-to-School Empowerment Programme” – an intervention designed to identify, rehabilitate, and re-enroll out-of-school girls into quality private secondary schools across Oyo State.

Through a well-coordinated registration and accreditation process, each girl was profiled to assess her educational background and assigned to one of the Initiative’s partner schools offering full or partial scholarships. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as parents, educators, and community leaders watched girls who had once been excluded from learning receive uniforms, books, and admission letters that symbolized a new beginning.

One of the beneficiaries, 13-year-old Mariam, had spent two years selling sachet water along Dugbe Road after dropping out of school due to financial hardship. Today, through the Girls Applause Initiative, Mariam has resumed her studies at a private secondary school in Bodija. Her story mirrors that of many other girls who are now being given a second chance at education.

Speaking at the event, Fadekemi Soetan explained that the initiative was inspired by her encounters with vulnerable teenage girls during her advocacy visits across Oyo State. “Every child deserves the dignity of education,” she said. “These girls are not statistics, they are dreams waiting to be realized. Our goal is to take them off the streets and back into classrooms where their potentials can flourish.”

The programme also integrates mentorship, psychosocial support, and skills development, ensuring that beneficiaries are not only educated but also empowered for life beyond school. Soetan emphasized that the Initiative is collaborating with private institutions, faith-based organizations, and local education authorities to make the reintegration sustainable.

Community leaders present hailed the empowerment as a model for addressing gender-based educational inequality. Chief Adebola Olayemi, who represented the Ibadan North Local Government, described Soetan’s work as “a timely rescue mission for our daughters,” urging other organizations to replicate the effort across the South-West.

Since its founding, the Girls Applause Initiative has been at the forefront of girl-child education reform, running school retention programs, menstrual hygiene campaigns, and leadership workshops for adolescent girls. This latest phase, however, marks a decisive shift from advocacy to direct community impact, targeting those most at risk of being permanently left behind.

As the event concluded, dozens of newly enrolled girls, clad in their new uniforms, beamed with pride as volunteers cheered. For many of them, it was the first tangible symbol of belonging and a hopeful step toward a brighter future.

Fadekemi Soetan affirmed that the Girls Applause Initiative will extend its outreach to other parts of Oyo and Ogun States in the coming year. “We are not stopping here,” she declared. “Education is the right of every girl, and we will continue to break barriers until every girl’s dream finds a classroom.”
