Lagos sensitises stakeholders to preventing gas explosions

Lagos State Government has urged stakeholders on the need to adhere to safety protocols when they handle and transport gases, to prevent gas explosion.

The Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, gave the advice yesterday at an oil and gas stakeholders’ safety summit held in Alausa, Ikeja.

Mojola, represented by the commission’s Technical Adviser, Mr. Seun Awojobi, said findings showed that gas explosions were often caused by improper handling and storage.

He said: “This summit is important due to gas explosions being reported on a daily basis in Lagos State. At the commission, our objective is to ensure  we reduce accidents, incidents, or fatalities that come as a result of the use of cooking gases.”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, represented by Dr. Bukola Ayinla, noted the efforts of the government to ensure safety of lives and property.

The Head of Distribution System, Storage Infrastructure, at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Oluwakayode Oyegoke, said from records, most of the incidents were caused by those who refused to follow the culture of safety and guidelines in handling hydrocarbons.

  • Why we’re supporting expansion of Ibadan Airport, by Makinde

Why we’re supporting expansion of Ibadan Airport, by Makinde

Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde yesterday said his administration would continue to support efforts to expand Ibadan Airport.

He said the facility was critical to the state’s economy.

The governor, speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the airport, highlighted some of the efforts made by the state government to expand the airport.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that some of the efforts made by the Makinde administration culminated in the upgrade of the Airport to CAT 6.

The government had, at different times, made a donation of a fire vehicle and a Toyota Hilux vehicle, while also embarking on the construction of 500,000 litres Aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, among others.

While speaking, the governor said that when the Iwo Road Bus Terminal project is completed, there will be cheap and accessible public transport to the Airport.

He said: “I want to congratulate the workers and management of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on your 40th anniversary.

“We look forward to your golden jubilee, and by that time, I look forward to being able to fly from this airport to other parts of the world.

“The Ibadan Airport is so central to our economy in Oyo State that after we came in as an administration, the first thing I did was to befriend them here. So, because of the centrality of the airport in Ibadan to our economy, we know if we work together with FAAN and the Airport officials, we will be able to achieve our own objective as well.

“The representative of the FAAN MD already mentioned a few of the things we have done here, but one thing that I have clearly seen is, for those who have been coming to this airport before the advent of this current administration, you will agree with me that if you needed to fly to Ibadan, you would call your driver because you won’t see any taxi here to take you to town, as the flights were few and far between.

“So, it was not worth the while for the taxis to come and stay here, but that situation has changed now.

“Whether you are coming from town or you are an arriving passenger, you can always get transportation that will take you from the airport to your destinations. Let me make this promise here and now; as soon as we complete the Iwo Road bus terminal, there will always be a public bus from here to the terminal and it will be cheap as well.

“Another vision we also have for the airport is ease of getting in and out of this airport and also attracting others to come and use the airport. And that is why the road from Airport to Ajia with a spur to Amuloko is supposed to target people from Ijebu-Ode and Ijebu-Igbo to use the airport.

“Once that road is completed, people from Ijebu-Ode will only take about 35 minutes to get here.

“Also, we are collaborating with the Osun State Government to fix the Ibadan-Iwo-Osogbo road, which is the shortest distance between Osogbo and here. Rather than Osogbo people trying to travel down to Akure, they can come to Ibadan Airport. So, they are being targeted as well.

“Finally, this is supposed to be an alternative airport to Lagos. As a government, we will continue to support the expansion of the airport and if, by any chance, they list Ibadan Airport as one of the airports to be concessioned, be sure Oyo State Government will go for it.”

The governor hailed members of staff who received awards at the event, noting that the awards were an encouragement to do more.

The Managing Director & Chief Executive of FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, represented by Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, appreciated the governor and his Exco for their efforts and support towards the uplift of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Ibadan Airport.

He listed the efforts to include the donation of a new Shackman F2000 fire truck to support fire rescue at the airport, building and furnishing of the protocol lounge, donation of brand new Hilux, completion of jet A1 farm tank, ongoing dualisation of the access road and ongoing construction of security post at the approach.

He reiterated the FAAN’s commitment to the state government, saying they would keep doing their best while counting on continuous support of both federal and state governments and all stakeholders.

  • Group petitions Police Headquarters over deployment of Adeleke’s CSO

Group petitions Police Headquarters over deployment of Adeleke’s CSO

Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, under the aegis of The Osun Masterminds (TOM), has raised concern over the deployment of a policeman, Adekunle Omoyele, indicted by #EndSARS panel for extrajudicial killings and brutality, as the new Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The group said the deployment of Omoyele would promote injustice because he confessed to killing of one of the two family members murdered after the Osun State governorship election, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, without being punished. Rather he was deployed as CSO to the governor.

One of the leaders of the groups, Comrade Ayo Ologun, speaking during the monthly news briefing yesterday, said Omoyele’s deployment caused the recent brawl at the Department of State Services (DSS) and withdrawal of their personnel from the governor because they could not work with an officer with such profile.

He said: “We have been raising alarm over deployment of Omoyele as the CSO of the new governor because most of the members of this group belong to the panel of #EndSAR. He was indicted for brutality, killings and other offences when he led several units of the police in Osun command.
