    • Hails senators for rejecting nominees for executive director

Ondo State Government yesterday insisted that it was the turn of the state to produce the next managing director and chief executive officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The government supported the decision of the three senators from the state that the provisions of the Act establishing the commission should be followed, stressing that they had demonstrated team spirit.

Commissioner for Information and Oritation Bamidele Ademola-Olateju said in a statement that the senators had taken a step of courage by refusing to accept arbitrariness, “when it is evident that it is the path of least resistance.”

She said they had done the right thing by their fearless, selfless and rightful rejection of any infraction on legal authorities, with regards to the nomination of anyone outside what the NDDC Act stipulated.

The commissioner said their resolve would strengthen the oneness and peculiar status of Ondo as the only oil-producing state in the Southwest.

Ademola-Olateju said the “shrewd bipartisan political collaboration is worthy of huge commendations.”

She said: “If feelers at our disposal are anything to rely upon, it is heart-warming to note, that on the strength of the resistance and joint rejection by our senators, the Senate Committee on Niger Delta has rejected the nomination of Mr. Charles Ogunmola as nominee for the position of executive director, Projects of the NDDC.

“Going by the provisions of the NDDC Act, 2000, and with specific reference to the position of the managing director, it is the turn of Ondo State to produce the next chief executive of the commission. We have done what is required by Law overtime, to pursue this worthy cause. We shall continue to reactivate efforts even beyond today, to achieve this aim for our state.”

He added: “Notwithstanding, we urge our distinguished senators to sustain this courageous pursuit, for it to berth successfully. We count on them to zealously guide and guard their conscionably displayed passion for the people of the oil-producing areas of Ondo State. We are in congruence with them, as they monitor events between now and the next plenary session, where their report is most likely to be submitted and debated.

“However, the next collective battle is for all hands to be on deck to achieve what is most desirable in the immediate. Put simply, we must all work together to ensure that Ondo State is not short-changed under the flimsy guise of our ‘rejection of an earlier opportunity’. The next EDP of the NDDC is still for the mandate areas of Ondo State to produce. We shall give whatever it takes to achieve this. For this reason, we will ensure a more robust, holistic stakeholders engagement, in a matter of days.

“We thank stakeholders who stood firm and unwavering in their individual and collective stance against the breach of the NDDC Act in light of the recent nominations.”

Four lawmakers had earlier returned to the assembly after fulfilling the conditions given to them to return to their legislative duties.

The assembly has been embroiled in a deep seated crisis, following Aribisogan’s removal as the Speaker and consequent installation of Mrs. Bunmi Adelugba as replacement.

Aribisogan alongside six lawmakers were suspended for allegedly blocking the passage of the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Bill and other sundry issues.

“The Notice of Discontinuance in the case with Suit Number HAD/169/2022 was signed by their lawyer, Mr. Sunday Olowolafe.

“The notice of discountenance reads: ‘Take notice that the claimants herein intend and do hereby wholly discontinue/ withdraw this suit in its entirety against the defendants.”

“The defendants are the Ekiti State House of Assembly (1st), the Clerk, Ekiti State House of Assembly (2nd) and the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba (3rd)”.

With the withdrawal of the lawmakers, only Aribisogan remains on suspension and left alone in the suit filed against the assembly.

‘I will drive Lagos special status demand at National Assembly’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Lagos West Senatorial District, Dr. Idiat Adebule, has promised to drive the demand for Lagos special status if elected during next year’s general election.

She spoke yesterday in Ikeja GRA when she officially presented an 11-point agenda.

“I will pursue the actualisation of special status for Lagos State to enhance the socio-economic viability of the people of Lagos,” she said.

Successive progressive administrations in Lagos, she said, “have delivered steady development since our country’s return to democracy in 1999 and this feat has made Lagos State stand tall among other states.”

“This is a product of continuity and stability in governance, as well as consistent leadership provided by our great party, the APC. The people of Lagos are smart, intelligent and highly educated to always make the right decision to guarantee the tradition of progressive political inclination by voting for the APC at all levels. 2023: IPAC chair decries attacks on political opponents

The Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Osun State, Mr. Simon Adebayo, has lamented the spate of violence against supporters of political parties in the state, ahead of the 2023 general election.

Adebayo, the Osun Central candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), urged the police to arrest thugs unleashing terror on members of parties and residents.

A statement by Adebayo yesterday condemned the attacks and warned politicians against using non-state actors to harass residents.

He said: “It is becoming worrisome that attacks on political supporters and residents are growing in the last one month. We cannot act as if we are not aware of the actions of criminals, who are hired by desperate politicians interested in do or die politics.

“Most of these thugs are going about with weapons to harass opponents of their pay master. Two weeks ago, Labour Party members were attacked with knives and cutlasses for pasting posters of their House of Assembly candidate. Similarly, supporters of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain were attacked by hoodlums, who injured them and destroyed property in Osogbo.

  • Why we embarked on rehabilitation of government road’

Why we embarked on rehabilitation of government road’

The Simawa Axis Development Association(SADA) has explained why residents in the community embarked on the rehabilitation of a state road abandoned by the Ogun State Government.

SADA spokesperson Dr Kolade Segun-Okeowo told newsmen at the site of the rehabilitated road has been sustained by the communal efforts and efforts of their next-door neighbour, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) headquarters.

Segun-Okeowo, who also doubled as chairman of the Simawa road works project, noted the community got on the rehabilitation because the road network is paramount to the commercial and economic development of any country.

He said: “The road has been kept alive by the effort of the RCCG. But of course, as you all know that the church alone might not be able to do all that is needed to be done on this road. Therefore, the volume of traffic on the road has definitely affected the upgrading and the road reliability. So the deplorable state of the road is affecting vehicle transportation and movements and apart from that, it is also a dangerous security sign.

”Because of course, if there’s an issue in the community, it will be difficult to raise quick action and quick response. So that’s why we are standing up to say that enough is enough. Yes, this is an effort of the whole community. Of course, individuals make up a community. This is a vision effort spearheaded by the SimawaAxis Development Association”.

When asked if the community has reached out to the Ogun State Government, he said: “Yes, we have tried to reach out to the government. We have written letters to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, We have written letters to the Commissioner for Community Development. We have written letters to the Commissioner for Works. We have also written letters to relevant agencies to come to our rescue. So far we have not received any response from any of these people”.

The filmmaker stated the first phase is a 1- kilometer stretch that includes grading, drainage and lateral filling estimated to cost the community about N45 million.

He added that the second phase will commence before the festive period, calling on the State Government to beam its lights on Simawa community before the 2023 general elections.
