Olatubosun, Elebuibon, don harp on harnessing Yoruba cultural heritage through Ijala

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun; the Araba Awo of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon; a Professor of Legal History, Prof. Akinkunmi Alao, and other cultural advocates have observed the need to constantly look into ways of harnessing the intellectual foundation of an indigenous genre of music, ‘Ijala’, in developing the society.

They made this observation at a lecture celebrating the 2022 Ijala Are-Ode Cultural Festival in Ibadan with the title “Ijala: Beyond social gyration to the intellectual exposition of Yoruba cultural heritage.”

Dr. Olatubosun, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Oye Oyedele suggested that a home-grown method of teaching the coming generation of Yoruba culture is the only way Yoruba people can occupy their rightful place in the comity of nations.

He added that for the Yoruba race to conquer the world, they must appreciate who they are, learn the things of the race, and behave truly like Yoruba people.

During his lecture, Prof. Akinkunmi Alao said there was a need to go back to the basics, look beyond the social gyrations derived from Ijala by hunters, and find ways to deploy the intellectual foundation of Ijala in Yoruba cultural heritage.

Alao enjoined historians to constantly research Yoruba cultural values that can benefit society.

The scholar noted that although the immediate purpose of any traditional music performance is to entertain, the genre of music could influence a renaissance of Yoruba Culture and traditions.

He enjoined Africans, especially the Yoruba people to embrace and leverage indigenous technology to develop human society.

Also speaking at the event, the Araba Awo of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon urged Africans to develop their culture, observing that it is a must to “first appreciate who they are and what they are.”

Chief Elebuibon also warned the Yoruba people against jettisoning Ifa science and technology, adding that if care is not taken, in the not distant future, people of the Yoruba tribe will soon be paying the Europeans for Ifa divination.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman Organising Committee, Ijala Are-Ode Cultural Festival, Oloye Dipo Gbenro noted that the Ona Ara Development Forum seeks for the development of Ona-Ara.

He also revealed that the forefathers of all Ona-Ara indigenes were hunters and warriors, who played pivotal roles in the ‘Agbekoya war’.

He said Ijala is an expository of intellectual content, which spells history, and family lineage.

“Ijala explores and exposes the inadequacies of our leaders, promotes social relations and is rich with powerful words”, he said.

Guests at the events include Maye Olubadan, Chief Lekan Alabi; Publisher Alaroye Newspaper, Adedayo Alao; Chief Bayo Oyero; Chief Diti Oladapo; Chairman, Ona-Ara Local Government Area, Musbaudeen Sanusi Shaba; Alakanran of Akanran, Chief Yekini Ogunlabi Obisesan, among others.

New Epe monarch rallies support for community

The newly installed monarch of Ladaba community in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, Oba Sikiru Nureni Alugbin, the Ilufemiloye (I) Oni Ladaba of Ladaba Kingdom, has impressed on indigenes and non-indigenes, the need to continuously contribute their quota in order to make the town liveable for all.

The traditional ruler made this call yesterday at the official ceremony marking his first public appearance after his ‘Ipebi oba’ (period of seclusion).

Fielding questions from newsmen, Oba Alugbin who is the first crowned monarch in the over a century-old kingdom, said he was indeed very happy to ascend the throne of his ancestors.

“The joy in my heart knows no bounds today as I officially mount the throne of my forefathers. Ladaba town was formerly under the guardianship of the HRM Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, the Oloja of Epe. But with my installation as the crown king of Ladaba, I’m very hopeful that greater development will come to my people today as I’m ready to exclusively pursue the development and growth of my ancestral home. I know I cannot do it alone, hence I’m using this medium to call on all men and women of goodwill within and outside Ladaba town to join hands with me to achieve this onerous task,” he said.

“My special appeal, therefore, is to our amiable Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to come to our rescue. We appreciate all his giant strides, especially his style of leadership and we promise to reciprocate his good gestures by mobilising our kith and kin ahead of the 2023 general elections,” he said, adding that “We have always been supporting every government in Lagos state, and that will continue even now. Members of our community are fully mobilised to support the ruling party in the state.”

The royal father who also goes by the honorific, Gbadewolu I, said his greatest desire is to be able to bring relief in whatever form to his subjects, hence he is making this appeal to seek the support of all.

According to him, the main preoccupation of the Ladaba community is buying, selling, and farming, much of which they have done across the century with wide acclaim.

But lamentably, he said the lack of social amenities in the area has resulted in a mass exodus of people out of the area, a development, he said, is not in the best interest of his people.

Specifically, he said as a result of the lack of good access roads, farmers as well as produce merchants find it difficult to get to the market; as such, their produce easily rots and becomes undervalued in the long run. Added to this, he said, is the lack of healthcare facilities to cater to the health of his people.

Most times, when there are health emergencies, such cases are usually very fatal, he stressed.

While promising to continue to work for the protection of the lives and prosperity of all, Sanwo-Olu appealed for the continued support of captains of industries to continue to donate in cash and in kind, equipment, expertise and intelligence, all of which are needed to ensure the state is kept safe.

In his address of welcome the Chairman of the LSSTF Board Mr Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti said it is in the tradition of the Fund to lay it’s activities open for all it’s sponsors and stakeholders on how it has continued to intervene in order to fix the resource deficit of the security agencies working in the state.

He said security is essential to all human activities, the main reason that security wi continue to play a leading role and LSSTF would be a major interface of that.

He said since it was sworn in 2020, this is the first time that the board would be playing host to a huge number of people at the Town Hall.

He said without security there is no economy and there can be no growth and prosperity.

“We continue to hold our donors in high esteem for their belief in the Lagos State effort to support security operations I. The state and we thank then for their donations to date.

He singled out for mention Zenith Bank and FCMB which continued to give year on year to the Fund. He described them as heroes whose efforts and donations have continued to keep the state safe.

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the LSSTF Dr Abdurrazaq Balogun said the Fund had continued to make the state the safest haven for investors who have continued to make the state their choice.

He said the core values of the Fund remains prudence, accountability, resourcefulness and trust, and has continued to make the state the safest most secure and most prosperous commercial location in Africa.

He said in the last three and a half years, LSSTF has provided 240 vehicles fully fitted with communication equipment, 230 motorbikes, 100 digital walkie-talkies with extra batteries, 167 push to talk cellular communication devices and 1,000 level IV bulletproof vest , 1,000 ballistic helmet and 100 ballistic fragmental vests, among others to keep the state safe.

He said the Lagos State government t committed N9.16 billion to social protection order to critically address contributors to crime such as substance abuse, youth unemployment and poor education to stamp out crime in the state.

He however lamented that the Trust Fund has a serious fund deficit that must be frontally addressed if the state must continue to provide safety for the people.

He urged the government to consider bringing every Lagosians on board as the Trust Fund can no longer rely on voluntary donations which has been affected by the harsh economic condition under which businesses have been operating.

He lamented that of the N74.773 billion budget approved by the senate for the Nigerian Police Trust Fund in 2021, only five vehicles and a few other equipments were distributed to the Lagos State Police Command despite the fact that a good number of the companies that made the bulk of the contributions to the Fund are located or have their head offices in Lagos.

“There is a limit to which we can manage no matter how much we try. That is why we urge everyone to ensure that they make donations to the Fund, if you truly believe in what we do. Please show that support for this noble assignment by making their donations and pledge to keep the state safe,” Balogun said.

In his own report of the activities of the Police Command under his watch in the year under review, the Commissioner of Police Mr Alabi said the command has continued to receive enormous support especially the provision of logistics received from. The government and the LSSTF.

Alabi said a total of 8,105 motorcycles were contravened in the year under review our of which 4,815 were impounded in June to September 2022, while 144 recalcitrant motorcycles operators and 40 passengers were arrested for contravening the traffic law and ban on okada operation declared by the state governor on June 15, 2022.

Ekiti varsity lecturers protest no-work-no-pay policy

Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ekiti State University chapter (ASUU-EKSU), has staged a solidarity protest in Ado-Ekiti against the no-work-no-pay policy imposed on them by the Federal Government.

The lecturers led by EKSU-ASUU Chairman, Dr. Kayode Arogundade, marched to the main gate, in solidarity with lecturers in federal universities.

Speaking during the protest, Arogundade, who condemned the implementation of no-work-no-pay policy and payment of half salaries to the lecturers, described such action as criminal and insensitive.

He accused President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Labour Dr. Chris Ngige and Education, Dr. Adamu Adamu, of nursing a hidden negative agenda for education.

Arogundade, who said Nigerians were waiting for the agenda to hatch, urged people to impress it on the Federal Government to do the needful for the education sector and university lecturers, to avert another strike.

He said: “We are expressing our displeasure concerning Federal Government’s draconian decision of no-work-no-pay introduced by Ngige and sanctioned by the govt. We are not casual workers, nobody is paying us wages, what we are getting is salary.”

According to him, it is criminal for anybody to think of imposing no-work-no-pay to the extent of paying half salary because people decide to agitate for their right.

Arogundade said: “They don’t want Nigerian educational system to develop. The educational system today is suffering in the hands of our leaders. Foreign universities are now feeding fat on us. You can imagine how much parents are looking for each year to sponsor their children to foreign universities.

“I am of the opinion that Ngige, Adamu and Buhari have an agenda not known to Nigerians. We are just waiting patiently to see when they will hatch that agenda. If they don’t have an agenda, the three of them cannot sleep and be facing the same direction that leads to nowhere. I know the agenda cannot be in the interest of Nigerians.

“On Tuesday, President Buhari signed a new wage for the judiciary. What are the academic workers asking for? It is living a wage. He has signed for others; he has refused to sign for academic workers.

“We appeal to Nigerians to speak to the Federal Government that they should not wait for us to start another round of action. We are getting used to it. You have not paid us eight months this year, we are not dead, we are still alive. So, government should not push us to a state whereby we become adamant to the extent that we don’t care whatever happens,” he said.

All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday received thousands of defectors from opposition political parties in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.  Observers said this showed the popularity of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and his administration.

The defectors were led by dozens of erstwhile stalwarts in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), among others – all attesting to the impressive performance of the AbdulRazaq administration in education, health care, workers’ welfare, rural-urban infrastructural development, women and youth empowerment, and safety nets for the poor and the vulnerable.

The Banquet Hall Ilorin – venue of the event – and its expansive precincts were filled up as the defectors from north, south and central districts of Kwara filed to the hall in a carnival-like atmosphere.

They were received by Governor AbdulRazaq alongside top government officials and party chieftains such as Kwara APC Chairman Sunday Fagbemi, and Director General of APC Campaign Alhaji Yahaya Seriki, among others.

He listed some of his administration’s scorecards across sectors and enjoined the participants to remain resolute to deliver the state for APC at the polls.

Fagbemi said ‘Kwarans’ had seen the huge gap between the past and present administrations in terms of inclusive growth and good governance, and had promised never to allow the state to go backward.

He said the comeback bid of PDP was evil and targeted at denying the citizens what they were already enjoying under AbdulRazaq, restating the government’s scorecards across sectors.

Director General of Kwara APC Campaign Council Alhaji Yahaya Seriki urged members to remain determined to work for the success of the party.

Defectors took turns to explain why they left their parties to embrace APC, calling Governor AbdulRazaq an architect of a new Kwara.

Former Deputy Speaker Mathew Okedare, who also defected, said they never knew that they were in darkness under the PDP-led administration until recently, attesting that Governor AbdulRazaq had demonstrated the capacity to lead.

Yeketi said what the current administration had achieved within three and a half years was enough to prove that AbdulRazaq meant well for the state.

Five Southwest states owe pensioners N330b, says union

States in the Southwest geopolitical zone, except Lagos State, owe pensioners N330 billion in pensions and gratuities.

The Southwest Zone of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), made the declaration in Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday at the end of its zonal meeting.

Its spokesman, Dr. Olusegun Abatan, told reporters at the end of the meeting that Osun led the debtor states with unpaid pensions and gratuities amounting to N145 billion.

He noted that the issue of unpaid pensions arrears and gratuities in Osun got compounded during the tenure of Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, as governor of the state.

He said there had not been any improvement since Aregbesola left the office of governor.

Abatan said Ondo, Ogun and Ekiti states owed N58 billion, N55 billion and N40 billion.

He added that Oyo State owed N43 billion before Governor Seyi Makinde took office in May 2019.

He noted that Makinde had paid about N11 billion out of the N43 billion owed by his predecessors.

Abatan said Lagos State did not belong to the group of debtor states because it was the first to embrace the Contributory Pension Scheme.
