    Tribunal reserves judgment in Oni’s petition against Oyebanji’s victory

    Ekiti State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ado-Ekiti has reserved judgment in the petition filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its candidate in the June 18 governorship poll, Segun Oni.

    At the resumed hearing yesterday, the Chairman of the three-member panel hearing the case, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, reserved judgment for a later date after parties before the jury adopted their final written addresses.

    At the adoption of written addresses, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) urged the Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss the petition filed by the SDP governorship candidate, Oni.

    Oyebanji said Oni and his party had failed to discharge the burden of proof on them to convince the tribunal that the election did not comply with the Electoral Act and 1999 Constitution.

    Oni and the SDP are the 1st and 2nd petitioners. The respondents are Oyebanji (1st), the APC (2nd), Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, in his capacity as the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (3rd), INEC (4th) and the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Monisade Afuye (5th).

    ‘Lagos law on boat operators still subsists’

    Lagos State Government has said the law banning boat operators from operating beyond 7pm still subsists.

    In a joint statement issued by the Director General, Lagos Safety Commission (LSSC), Mr. Lanre Mojola and the General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, the government said the operators must comply with the waterways safety code, to prevent accidents and loss of lives on the waterways.

    “In line with the waterways’ safety code developed by waterway’s regulators and stakeholders, boat transport activities are to take place between 5:30am and 7pm everyday. It is an offence for boat operators and passengers to be seen on inland waterways outside of these hours.

    “Therefore, waterways’ users are advised to observe this time restriction, to avoid boat mishaps. On no condition should anyone get onboard a vessel after or before the stipulated operational hours. Likewise, no passenger or operator can board a vessel without wearing a life vest with standard buoyancy factor,” the government said.

    Kwara State Government has promoted 9,175 civil servants between 2019 and 2021.

    The government has also begun the 2022 promotion examinations for 2,096 civil servants.

    The Nation yesterday monitored the interview session of the promotion examinations on the premises of the state Civil Service Commission.

    Some of the participants hailed Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for approving the promotion of the civil servants with cash backing as and when due.

    Participants expressed satisfaction about the conduct of the promotion examinations, expressing optimism that they would scale through.

    234,037 PVCs uncollected in Ekiti, says INEC

    Barely three months to the 2023 general election, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said more than 234,037 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are still uncollected in Ekiti State.

    The new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Prof. Ayobami Salami, made this known yesterday in Ado-Ekiti during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ (NUJ’s) secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.

    He said 754,886 people had collected their PVCs, out of 988,923 total registered voters, which he said represented 24 per cent of registration in the state.

    Salami said: “Preparatory to the coming 2023 general election in Ekiti, let me state that INEC has 16 local governments areas, 177 registration areas and 2,445 polling units to deal with.

    “We have a total number of 988,923 registered voters out of which 754,886 voters have collected their PVCs, while 234,037, representing 24 per cent are yet to collect their PVCs.”

    Ogun Central monarchs endorse Abiodun for second term

    Fifty-four monarchs under the aegis of Egba Traditional Council have endorsed Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for second term.

    Announcing the endorsement yesterday, the President of the Council, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, hinged their support on Abiodun’s sterling performance since he assumed office in 2019.

    The Alake said Abiodun had done well and deserved second term to finish what he had started.

    Oba Gbadebo said: “Governor Abiodun, having done so well, deserves a second term.”

    Hailing the governor for completing some abandoned projects in Egbaland and helping to complete the Traditional Council’s Hall at Alake’s palace, Oba Gbadebo called on the state government to build the road leading to the railway station in Abeokuta.

    The Osile of Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, said the people and traditional rulers in Egbaland were in full support of the governor’s second term bid, while the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola and the Agura of Gbagura, Oba Sobur Bakre, expressed confidence that Abiodun would perform better if given another opportunity.

    The governor thanked the monarchs for the confidence they had in his capacity to move Ogun to greater heights.

    He said his administration had been fair to all parts of the state in the distribution of projects and appointment.

    Enumerating some of the projects executed in Ogun Central Senatorial District, the governor said plans were on to finalise the concession, operation and transfer of the supposed 250-bed hospital to an international hospital management company that would complete and manage it.

    “The hospital is a world-class health care facility of excellence that will attract health tourism from all over Southwest and Nigeria.

    “We are working assiduously on the establishment of Kajola Dry Port and Wasimi Export and Logistics Hub, which will decongest Lagos port, thereby making it more efficient and further creating an enabling environment for industries and manufacturers in Ogun State.

    APC presidential rally for Lagos Saturday

    The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and the Director General of State Campaign Council, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, yesterday described the presidential standard- bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as the candidate to beat in next year’s general election.

    They noted the public enthusiasm and excitement that had greeted his ambition as the candidate, saying Lagos was rooting for the leader, mentor, benefactor, crowd puller and democratic icon of the current dispensation.

    Also, the National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, acknowledged the public interest and expectation, assuring that “a victory for Asiwaju is a victory for Lagos.”

    The party leaders spoke at a news conference in Ikeja on the preparations for the APC presidential rally holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Saturday.

    Solomon, the chairman of the Local Organising Committee, said the event holds a promise for mass attendance by party faithful and supporters because of Tinubu’s popularity.

    He described the standard-bearer as the most consistent, the biggest contributor and the most visible democratic icon since 1999.

    Solomon recalled that Tinubu excelled as a Lagos West senator in the Third Republic and governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.

    He added: “Therefore, the event is like a homecoming for our leader and mentor, who has become a national pride.”

    Solomon said at the proposed carnival-like rally, the former governor would speak about his manifesto tagged: ‘Renewed Hope.’

    He said as a responsible party, APC would seek the cooperation of Lagosians on the need for temporary diversion of traffic and mass movement of supporters within the vicinity of the rally.

    He said the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other law enforcement agencies would be fully mobilised to ensure a rally devoid of security infractions and traffic disruptions.

    Solomon enjoined participants to be of good conduct and display peaceful conduct at the event.

    He said the Saturday rally would not be the last because Tinubu would come back for the closing mega rally in Lagos.

    Ojelabi, who extolled the virtues of the candidate, said: “We expect a rousing homecoming for our leader.”

    Israel said party leaders from across the states are expected at the rally because Lagos is Tinubu’s base.

    He added: “Lagos will set the pace for other states to build upon. It will be a hitch-free exercise.

    Lagos to deploy fire-fighter trucks to Badagry, others

    Lagos State Government has finalised plans to deploy fire-fighter trucks to Badagry fire station and other locations.

    This is to curtail the constant fire incident in the coastal town.

    Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mobolaji Ogunlende, announced this following the November 11 fire outbreak at Ajara Agamathen area of Badagry.

    Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, according to Ogunlende, was not happy about the incident which had become constant owing to mismanagement of petroleum products in the axis.

    He urged Badagry residents to desist from keeping petroleum products at home.

    Sanwo-Olu had recently commissioned newly built three fire stations, 62 state-of-the-art fire-fighting equipment and newly recruited Fire Officers into the service of the agency.

    He noted Sanwo-Olu directed deployment of a fire-fighter truck to Badagry fire station for efficient and effective use in the vicinity.

    He added more fire fighters would also be deployed to fire stations across Lagos to ensure that fire outbreak is contained within reasonable time.

    Ogunlende recalled the Governor had assured Lagosians of his administration’s continuous support to the state’s Emergency Responders System in order to reduce casualty figures and losses resulting from disasters.

    Sanwo-Olu hosts town hall meeting on security

    The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has restated the call for review of national policing and security architecture in order to make government more proactive in the protection of lives and property.

    Governor Sanwo-Olu made this known yesterday, in his speech at the 16th LSSTF Town Hall meeting on security meeting with the governor which had in attendance captains of banking and industries, key movers of the private sector, and top brass of the state security at the Civic Center, Lagos.

    Among those in attendance are members of the state Executive Council, traditional rulers and titled chiefs, among them the white cap chiefs of Lagos, and security chiefs, among them, the Police Commissioner for Lagos State Mr Abiodun Alabi, other members of the state security council in the Army, Airforce, Navy and the Department of the State Security (DSS), the NSCDC, LASTMA, and other security agencies.

    Others in attendance are the Director General NIMASA Dr. Bashir Jamoh, former Inspector General of Police Alhaji Musiliu Smith, DIG Wahab Olusegun Kazeem (rtd), DIG Agboola Oshoduli Glover (rtd) and DIG Zone 2, Onikan, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, and Commander MV Beecroft Commander Abdulrasheed Malam among others.

    The governor who observed that the Federal Government has commenced the process of the reform with the take-off of the community Policing, however said more need to be done to achieve the far-reaching structural reforms in security management in the country.

    He said: “While we continue to push for those reforms however, we must make the best of the current circumstances and embrace the limitations that come with it”.

    While promising to continue to work for the protection of the lives and prosperity of all, Sanwo-Olu appealed for the continued support of captains of industries to continue to donate in cash and in kind, equipment, expertise and intelligence, all of which are needed to ensure the state is kept safe.

    While acknowledging that security is a matter to which everybody I. The state must be committed, the governor urged every one,: “when you see something, say something. Do not keep quiet. Security is a collective responsibility”.

    He said the LSSFT is constantly reengineering itself to deliver more efficiently, transparently and in a resukt-oriented manner, which he added are further incentive to continue to support its operations.

    “We will continue to send a strong and loud message to all purveyors of crime and criminality in Lagos State. We will stay ahead of your intentions and actions and we will continue to fight you with everything we have. That is the Lagos spirit, that is who we will continue to be. There will be no room for actions that undermine our wellbeing and our capacity to achieve our dreams a d aspirations”

    In his address of welcome the Chairman of the LSSTF Board Mr Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti said it is in the tradition of the Fund to lay it’s activities open for all it’s sponsors and stakeholders on how it has continued to intervene in order to fix the resource deficit of the security agencies working in the state.

    He said security is essential to all human activities, the main reason that security wi continue to play a leading role and LSSTF would be a major interface of that.

    He said since it was sworn in 2020, this is the first time that the board would be playing host to a huge number of people at the Town Hall.

    He said without security there is no economy and there can be no growth and prosperity.

    “We continue to hold our donors in high esteem for their belief in the Lagos State effort to support security operations I. The state and we thank then for their donations to date.

    He singled out for mention Zenith Bank and FCMB which continued to give year on year to the Fund. He described them as heroes whose efforts and donations have continued to keep the state safe.

    The Executive Secretary/CEO of the LSSTF Dr Abdurrazaq Balogun said the Fund had continued to make the state the safest haven for investors who have continued to make the state their choice.

    He said the core values of the Fund remains prudence, accountability, resourcefulness and trust, and has continued to make the state the safest most secure and most prosperous commercial location in Africa.

    He said in the last three and a half years, LSSTF has provided 240 vehicles fully fitted with communication equipment, 230 motorbikes, 100 digital walkie-talkies with extra batteries, 167 push to talk cellular communication devices and 1,000 level IV bulletproof vest , 1,000 ballistic helmet and 100 ballistic fragmental vests, among others to keep the state safe.

    He said the Lagos State government t committed N9.16 billion to social protection order to critically address contributors to crime such as substance abuse, youth unemployment and poor education to stamp out crime in the state.

    He however lamented that the Trust Fund has a serious fund deficit that must be frontally addressed if the state must continue to provide safety for the people.

    He urged the government to consider bringing every Lagosians on board as the Trust Fund can no longer rely on voluntary donations which has been affected by the harsh economic condition under which businesses have been operating.

    He lamented that of the N74.773 billion budget approved by the senate for the Nigerian Police Trust Fund in 2021, only five vehicles and a few other equipments were distributed to the Lagos State Police Command despite the fact that a good number of the companies that made the bulk of the contributions to the Fund are located or have their head offices in Lagos.

    “There is a limit to which we can manage no matter how much we try. That is why we urge everyone to ensure that they make donations to the Fund, if you truly believe in what we do. Please show that support for this noble assignment by making their donations and pledge to keep the state safe,” Balogun said.

    In his own report of the activities of the Police Command under his watch in the year under review, the Commissioner of Police Mr Alabi said the command has continued to receive enormous support especially the provision of logistics received from. The government and the LSSTF.

    Alabi said a total of 8,105 motorcycles were contravened in the year under review our of which 4,815 were impounded in June to September 2022, while 144 recalcitrant motorcycles operators and 40 passengers were arrested for contravening the traffic law and ban on okada operation declared by the state governor on June 15, 2022.

    Lagos gets 20-year power generation plan

    Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged the House of Representatives to allow governors contribute to the electricity bill 2022, which will allow states to generate their own power and develop at their pace.

    The governor spoke yesterday when the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) was handed over to him. The IRP is a 20-year plan developed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in conjunction with the United States of America, through the USAID and Power Africa Nigeria Power Sector Programme, PA-NPSP, to increase electricity generation to 11,000 megawatts.

    Sanwo-Olu said the House of Representatives should allow sub-nationals contribute to the bill “so we can un-bottle the bottlenecks in the power sector and have a bill that can help the states develop at their own pace.”

    “I call on House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila to join us to resolve issues in the bill,” he said.

    The governor noted that the goal of the IRP was to ensure businesses had access to power, which would in turn improve the economy.

    “The electricity/power value chain has to be effectively functional and sustainable if we must grow our economy, and all businesses must have access to power,” he said.

    Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Olalere Odusote said the 20-year plan was an attempt at removing Lagos from the national grid to achieve the long term goals of sustainability.

    Abiodun urged to tackle kidnapping

    A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Centre for Democracy and Socio-Economic Rights (CEDESER), has urged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to suspend political campaigns and pay attention to the frightening rate of kidnapping, banditry and land grabbing by criminals, who have held Ewekoro Local Government and its environs to ransom.

    The advice was contained in a statement issued by the President, Michael Ajayi.

    The statement said: “We are alarmed by the spate of kidnapping, harassment, molestation and maiming of innocent citizens in Ogun State, especially in Ewekoro and adjoining local governments. People in Obada, Awowo, Wasinmi, Itori, Papalanto, Ajipatu, Elere, Onigbedu and Kajola today live in fear as kidnapping for ransom by criminals, who sometimes wear army uniform, has become a daily occurrence.”
