Hijab row in Kwara school politically- motivated, say ex-students

Former students of the Oyun Baptist High School (OBHS), Ijagbo in Oyun Local Government of Kwara State have said that the recent bloody clash in the school over hijab (veil) wearing by female students was politically-motivated.

They, therefore, cautioned government and other stakeholders to eschew incendiary utterances.

Spokesperson for the 1984 set of the school, who is also the Olu Omo of Ijagbo land, Chief Tunde Adesina, spoke to The Nation in Ilorin on the sidelines of a reunion and teachers appreciation ceremony of the set.

He appealed to the state government to resolve the row with alacrity for the sake of the pupils.

Adesina said: “The recent hijab row in the school is very unfortunate. It is sad that it is happening now. More so that we are really preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school.  As a matter of fact, during our time, nobody discriminated on religious lines. Christians and Muslims were allowed to practise their faith. But when you look at the political terrain of Nigeria now, all interests are based on politics.

“Come to think of it, the row is not really religion. There is some element of politics in the whole issue. We need to be extremely careful the way and manner we resolve disputes. We need to eschew sensitive utterances.

“The government has made a policy that does not go down well with a certain faith, despite that we need to dialogue and look at the way the policy can be reversed so that peace will reign again.

“We had some issues in the community before the hijab incident– because I am from Ijagbo. Peace was just returning before this came up again. The hijab controversy has further polarised the community along religious line.

“A government will succeed where there is peace. Government should therefore weigh the options and bring the challenge in our hand to a peaceful resolution in record time.  As we speak now, the school is under lock and key. The pupils are the ones losing.”

Lending his voice, one of the former teachers of the school, Alhaji Ibiyeye Razaq, said that the hijab palaver was unfortunate.

“The incident is an unfortunate one. I don’t think we should quarrel over the issue of religion. I mean nobody can defend God. I am not happy that it went to the extent that the school would be shut.”

“Your Excellency sir, as nation-states globally grapple with unpredictable developmental challenges occasioned by oil prices and different variants of Coronavirus pandemic, Ogun State couldn’t have been luckier with a calculative, creative, inclusive and tolerant governor like Prince Abiodun in the saddle at this moment. I can rightly predict a better future for our dear state.”

  • Senator seeks unity in Osun APC

Senator seeks unity in Osun APC

The lawmaker representing Osun West and a close ally of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Adelere Oriolowo, yesterday condemned grouping and factions in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State.

He said that grouping and factions polarised the party more and gave room for the opposition to take over the government.

Oriolowo, in a statement he signed, warned the progressives family of the impending danger inherent in allowing groups and factions to fly in the party.

Highlighting the disadvantages that the faction had cost the progressives, he said: “During the First Republic in the Western Region, the rift between Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his deputy, Chief Ladoke Akintola, snowballed into an unrest tagged: ‘Wild Wild West’ This led to the collapse of the First Republic, military incursion into Nigeria politics and the infamous three-year civil war.

“In Oyo State, the rift between Chief Bola Ige and his deputy, Chief Sunday Michael Afolabi, led to the taking over of the Old Oyo State by the Chief Omololu Olunloyo led NPN government.

“The inability of the progressives to run the second term led to the abandonment of many lofty programmes that were either ongoing or in the pipeline. Likewise, the strife between the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the former governor of Oyo State and some of his party members led to the collapse of the APC government and it also led to the loss of senatorial seat by the sitting governor to an opposition, who defected from the APC to the PDP as a result of the strife.

“The rift between Chief Bisi Akande, his deputy, Senator Iyiola Omisore and the late Chief Mojisoluwa Akinfewa led to the collapse and loss of Baba Akande’s progressive government to the Prince Oyinlola-led PDP government for seven and a half years. The three and a half years struggle by the progressives, backed by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and led by Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, brought back the reign of progressives to Osun.”

He continued: “What is happening in the progressives family in the Southwest, especially in Osun, shows that the gladiators have not learnt from history.”

He called for reconciliation, saying: “Our leaders, elders and all stakeholders in the APC and other Southwest politics should learn from the aforementioned history and stand up to serve fairness and justice, rather than flexing power and ego, all of which are ephemeral.”

  • ‘My mission as Oyo Youth Assembly Speaker’

‘My mission as Oyo Youth Assembly Speaker’

Israel Fawole has been appointed Speaker of the Oyo State Youth Assembly (OSYA) by Governor Seyi Makinde. Fawole will be leading 30 other appointees comprising youths and young graduates to steer the ship of OSYA.

In this interview with Dayo Mustapha, the graduate of Nursing Science from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), shares his dreams and aspirations for his new task. Excerpts:

Give us a little background on Oyo State Youth Parliament

The Youth Parliament is a feature of many developed democracies in the world. It is a training platform that prepares young people for leadership roles and decision making processes, especially issues that border around nation building and youth development. The parliament operates with the framework of State Assemblies and National Assembly. The Youth Parliament not only provides practical and ready avenue for young people’s participation in governance and public administration but also provides a platform for young people to realise their leadership potentials, while building sense of hope, confidence, imagination, creativity and pride in the Nation’s heritage.

As an undergraduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology where you once served as Speaker of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences Students Association, do you see a nexus between that role and this new assignment?

Yes, I do. For me, it was a platform that has prepared me for this office. Back then, I was open to reading and learning at the feet of many heroes in leadership and that set me up and laid a good foundation in me for leadership generally. The experience I garnered while I served as Speaker of the Association is the reason I am not strange to the legislative proceedings and how to tackle quandaries around it. Let me also note that I served as the National President of Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association, where I have experience leading such a significant National Association.

What in your view, are two biggest challenges affecting undergraduates and youths generally in Oyo State?

Lack of vision and lack of understanding on what to do. Two, Inadequate resources to fuel the passion of the youths.

There have been an upsurge in crime and moral decadence. How would you use your office to provoke moral reawakening among youths in Oyo State?

To solve any problem, we have to know and admit that there is indeed a problem, and then proffer possible solutions to address it.The first point to note is that the entire upsurge of crime, atrocities and moral decadence is a chain. There are many factors contributing to this menace, and if anything will be done to effect changes, the problem must be traced to the root.

This is not an attempt to justify crimes but in order to effectively address the issue, we must dig deeper. Research has proven that unemployment is the foremost factor contributing to increased crime rates generally, and the youths in Oyo State are not excluded. When people are not meaningfully engaged, resorting to crimes becomes imminent.Hanging closely after that is the completely flawed orientation and attitude youths display towards morality, it is regarded “old-fashioned” and “cliché” to be upright and stand for justice and peace. The culture currently rewards bad behavior. Not to dwell too much on the problems, the major ways through which we can attempt to solve this problem, or at least create a foundation upon which subsequent administrations can build, are reorientation and awareness, education and empowerment.

Could you shed more life on this?

Reorientation and awareness will entail organising seminars and symposiums tailored towards reawakening morals, and detailing the long-term dangerous effects of continuous engagement in crimes. People need to understand that we by ourselves will suffer the consequences of these things, and generations will continue too. By the things we allow and tolerate, we are unconsciously teaching the upcoming generation what is permissible.Education entails both the formal and informal aspects. We will encourage and provide aid to sizeable numbers of people who are desirous of pursuing it.

We will also educate the youths on opportunities “outside the four walls of a class room”, people have skills they can deploy in the big market space but lack the knowledge, information and exposure to progress with it. It is my belief that when people are meaningfully engaged in profitable ventures, they will have no time to commit crimes.
We would also reach out to stakeholders in various industries within the state to see how jobs can be secured for graduates who have successfully completed their degrees in Higher Institutions but are unemployed.Overall, we would ensure these steps have a long-lasting effect that transcends different administrations.

Do you think your vision and mission align with the Oyo State Government?

Yes it does align. The Governor has consistently made it clear that the youth as a group will be well-represented in this government, and here we are representing the youths to make inputs in the decision-making process. Our mission is simply to project the nation’s heritage, while consciously promoting national unity and development as enshrined in the nation’s Constitution. Undoubtedly, they align and we have a common point to meet. A leader has no impact if his vision does not align to that of his territory.

How would you leverage on the numerical strength of youths for further education and economic improvement in the State?

There is great strength in number; more youths, more workforce, more power generated, more development. Further to that, it is important to create an enabling environment where human resources are adequately deployed, in the most conducive work culture. This is key in ensuring youths are retained across diverse fields, thereby leading to the overall betterment of the economy in the state.Beyond the number, I am interested in the passion and potentials of the youths to help them navigate in developing a better society for themselves.

  • Odebunmi advocates peace in Oyo APC

Odebunmi advocates peace in Oyo APC

The leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus at the House of Representatives, Hon Segun Odebunmi has advised stakeholders in the party against fanning ember of division among members.

Odebunmi, representing Ogo- Oluwa/ Surulere Federal Constituency, said the return of former Oyo APC chairman Ajiboye Omodewu and Inauguration of party excos are in order and should be supported by those genuinely interested in the progress of the party.

Senator Ayoade Adeseun, who spoke on behalf of APC stakeholders recently, had dismissed the return of Omodewu and inauguration of excos as the climax of what he called the reign of impunity in Oyo State.

He alleged some minority in collaboration with outside forces had sought to impose on the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“They will definitely fail as the stakeholders will use all legal means to resist any attempt to allow Omodewu as chairman of the party,” he said.

But Odebunmi noted that such statement should not be emanating from any genuine leader of the party.

“Everything has been resolved ,there is no crisis in the party. The leadership of the party are already making serious moves to reconcile all stakeholders so that we can have a united APC in Oyo, so there is no cause for alarm,” he stated.

He claimed some people want to use the development to create crisis in APC to reactivate their political relevance.

Odebunmi stated: “It is quite sad that Senator Adeseun will be among those championing issues against the party, most especially when all sons and daughters of Ogbomoso land are mourning and yet to bury out political leader Otunba Adebayo Alao- Akala.

” I am always baffled that a personality of Sen Adeseun would always be caught in the web of antagonising the choice of the people like he did in the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) untill he lost the battle against Gov Seyi Makinde at the Supreme Court.

“Adeseun is seeking political relevance. We left PDP for him and moved to APC. He failed fo utilise the structure and he later joined us in APC in 2019 after he had lost in the PDP and rather than working for the progress of the party he is still in the opposing side.

“I want to urge the leadership of APC to ignore him. He is only looking for political relevance as they used to do in PDP..

“If you check his political history, you will know that he has never stayed in a political party for two dispensations consecutively.

“He would have gone back to PDP but because he has fought the party up to the Supreme Court level, he has no other party to go than to stay in APC.

“But as a critical stakeholder, I want to urge him to abide by the Constitution of the party and be concerned with the progress of the party.”

Osun community boils as police uncover body in cultist’s den

Amid sporadic shootings in the Ede community on Friday, operatives of Osun Police Command uncovered an unidentified body at the den of notorious cultists in Ede, Osun State.

The gunshots created panic as residents scampered into safety to avoid being hit by stray bullets from cultists.

The body was discovered after the protests by students of Federal Polytechnic Ede over the killing of their colleagues, Hassan Adedeji who just graduated from the institution and a commercial motorcyclist killed by suspected cultists.

Police had fingered a suspected cultist, Rasidi Okolu who had recently killed and maimed his victims for the recent murder of Adedeji and one other on Wednesday night.

A resident of the community named, Dayo told our correspondent, that “after the student went on a rampage on Thursday by making bonfires on roads in Ede to protest the killing of their colleagues, cultists still went around the community to create fear by shooting sporadically.

“Today (Friday), there were sporadic shootings at Oja Timi; those cultists have turned to another thing in this Ede, people could not go out because of fear of being hit by bullets.”

Contacted, the spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola disclosed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with killings in Ede.

“The prime suspect, Rasheed Okolu killed a man at his den, we discovered the body at his den chained and killed. Police are everywhere in the Ede community to ensure that he is arrested and brought to justice. Our men are on the ground tackling cultists in that axis. The situation is under control.”
