    Lagos upgrades resident card

    The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has announced that the new Lagos State Resident Identity Card (LAG ID) has been upgraded with additional features and functions that enable the cardholders to have access to faster and better services from the state government.

    According to the agency, the new LAG ID Card is a multi-application smartcard that offers registered residents access to services ranging from a means of personal security and identity verification at points of accessing various government services, applying for loans from Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) to payment for services across multiple vendors including BRT and LagFerry as well as cash withdrawals from banks’ Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

    LASRRA’s General Manager, Mrs. Ibilola Kasunmu, said: ‘’It is a smart card with multiple security features and applications.’’

    She urged residents to kick off their registration on the LASRRA website and visit any nearest LASRRA Centre for biometrics capturing to complete their registration for the new LAG ID Card, also stressing that registration is absolutely free.

    She also urged those that registered in 2018 or before 2018 and have changed their names and addresses, to update their data on the LASRRA website and complete the biometric verification for validation for issuance of the new card at the nearest LASSRA centre.

    NSCDC arrests four suspected criminals in Kwara

    Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said its operatives have arrested four suspected criminals in the state.

    The command said the suspects were arrested during a raid carried out at a location in Rore village, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

    Spokesperson of the command, Babawale Afolabi gave the names of the suspects as Olanrewaju Adesoye, 24, a.k.a Konfu; Isaac Abraham, 28, a.k.a Akube; Tope Fadeyi, 33 and Abdulateef Wasiu, 23 while two other members of the gang are still at large.

    “ On Thursday this week officers of the NSCDC in Omu Aran, who were acting on a tip-off busted hideouts of some criminal elements that have been terrorizing the area in recent time. During the time of their arrests, two locally made pistols, five live cartridges, packets of tramadol, local charms, Indian hemp, and six mobile phones were recovered from their hideouts,” Afolabi said.

    According to him, one of the suspects, Olanrewaju Adesoye, who claimed to be a cobbler, admitted that the two guns and other items were recovered from them but denied knowing anything about the guns adding that one Sadiq Ariyo, who is still at large is the owner of the guns.

    Ogun customs intercepts over 100 trailers of foreign rice, others

    Men of the Ogun Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted 101 trailers of foreign parboiled rice within a period of 13 months, the outgoing controller of the command, Dera Nnadi has said.

    Nnadi disclosed this on Monday during a media briefing held at the Idiroko Area Command in Ipokia Local Government Area.

    Nnadi explained that 96 trailer loads of rice, equivalent to 57,758 bags of 50kg each were seized in 2021, while five trailer loads, equivalent to 3,008 bags of rice were seized in January 2022.

    “Also seized were poultry products, used tyres, second-hand clothing, dangerous drugs (tramadol and cannabis sativa), palm oil, petroleum products, assorted soaps, and cream.”

    ‘’ 1, 389 seizures were made within the period under review and the duty paid value of all the items seized amounted to N1.48 billion.

    Nnadi added: ‘’It is worthy of note that the major source of revenue of the Command, which is import and export, have not been optimized since the closure of the land borders by the Federal Government.

    “Fees collected from the auction sale of seized items, especially petroleum products, scrap metals, and other perishable items. A sum of N43,921,205.50 was collected as revenue from the auction sales seized petroleum products and scrap metals.’’

    Bishop Adebiyi passes on

    The pioneer Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion; The Rt Revd Peter Awelewa Adebiyi has passed on.

    He was said to have died at 10:15 pm on February 10, 2022, after a brief illness.

    Adebiyi was bishop of Lagos West Anglican Diocese until 2013 when he retired having clocked the mandatory 70 years retirement age.

    Born on April 27, 1943, to Chief  Samuel Ogunmola and Madam Alice Fatinuwe Adebiyi(of blessed memory) both from Osi-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

    He lectured in the university for many years before his call to the ordained ministry. He started his career as a priest at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ilawe Ekiti.

    He was consecrated a canon in 1983 and was the vicar of Archbishop Vining Memorial Church, Ikeja between 1987 and May 1993.

    Burial arrangements will be announced later by the family.

    Police probe OAU student’s death in hostel’s soakaway

    The police have waded into the death of a 200-level student of Obafemi University Ile-Ife, Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun, who died inside the hostel’s soakaway.

    The Nation reports that Heritage, a student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, who was living in a private hostel at student village, fell inside the soakaway through an opening on the pit and died before the arrival of the rescue team led by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Eyitope Ogunmodede, on Wednesday.

    A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command has taken over the investigation of the circumstances that led to Heritage’s death.

    He said: “Heritage resided in one of the private hostels named BVER and died in the septic tank. The incident saddened the university management. It is tragic, devastating, unfortunate and unacceptable.

    ”The owner of the private hostel, BVER, where the incident occurred, has been issued a query by the university management and his response is being awaited.

    ”It must be noted that all the hostels in the students’ village are privately owned and they are not under the control of the university.

    “The university management presently has only oversight functions on these private hostels.”

    CDA holds AGM

    The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Ogo Idera Oluwa Community Development Association (CDA) Ijede Local Council Development Area, Lagos State will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022.

    A statement issued by the planning committee chairman, Adedayo Somoye said the CDA comprising Nepascoop Estate, Tijani, Saratu, Taiwo Ijaoba Street, and Palm View Close, was established in December 2020 under the administration of the former LCDA Chairman Alhaji Fatiu Salisu.

    He disclosed that the meeting was also being organised to enable the current chairman, Ola Campbell give the scorecard of his stewardship.

    ‘’The venue of the event is the open space at Saratu Ijaoba Street, Idera Bus-stop Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State. There will be free medical checkups, sanitation exercises, and other activities, ‘’ he said.

    Oyo govt, IBEDC resolve differences

    Oyo State Government and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) yesterday resolved the differences that led the government to seal off some business offices of the DisCo.

    The two parties, after a meeting at the Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan declared their readiness to work together to find an amicable resolution of issues surrounding the recent shutting of the IBEDC offices in Ibadan by the government.

    The parties, in a statement jointly released after the meeting, promised to continue to work together in the interest of the residents.

    They assured the public of the restoration of electricity as soon as possible, saying they would continue amicable resolution of the issue and work together to make electricity meters available to all residents.

    The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Energy & Mineral Resources, Temilolu Seun Ashamu and the Chief Operating Officer of IBEDC,  John Ayodele, said: “This is to notify the  public that the Oyo State Government and the IBEDC have resolved and agreed to work together in the interest of the public.”

    Finnih to politicians: be a reference point to coming generation

    A member of the Governance Advisory Council in Lagos State, Dr. Oluyomi  Finnih, has advised politicians to be a reference point to the coming generation.

    Finnih, the Baasegun of Lagos and Vice Patron of the Yoruba Tennis Club, said they should have nothing to hide, “as everything we do on earth is known to our creator, hence the need to stand tall so that people will have good things to say concerning us either here on earth or when we are gone to the great beyond.”

    He spoke yesterday at an 80th birthday lecture organised for him at the Greetings Hall, Yoruba Tennis Club, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Finnih said good behaviour and act of benevolence brought about good names, rather than wealth, hence the need for all and sundry to be selfless, accountable and show elements of integrity.

    Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Finnih as an epitome of knowledge and a reference point as far as knowledge, professional expertise and humanity were concerned.

    The governor, represented by the Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde, said the Baasegun of Lagos was a man who served with excellence and integrity in capacities and positions he held.

    In his lecture titled: “Nothing to hide”, the former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chief Joseph Randle, urged the younger generations to emulate Finnih.

    The event was attended by well-wishers and associates of the celebrator, family, friends, politicians and representatives of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, among others.

    EKOEXCEL celebrates women, girls in science

    Female beneficiaries of EKOEXCEL, an initiative to transform public education using innovative technology, have hailed the power of science and affirmed their interests in becoming scientists.

    The pupils spoke as the world marks the 2022 International Day of Women and Girls in Science today.

    The theme of this year’s event is:

    ‘Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: Water Unites Us’, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 of ensuring access to water and sanitation for all.

    Speaking about their love for science, the pupils hailed its transformational impact and benefits to humanity.

    The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, first marked in 2015,  aims to amplify the critical role women and girls can play in science and technology.

    Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board’s (LASUBEB’s) EKOEXCEL in 2019 to provide quality education for the rich and the poor. Highlighting EKOEXCEL’s efforts to promote inclusive education for all genders and encourage female interest in science, LASUBEB’s Executive Chairman Wahab Alawiye-King said: “EKOEXCEL harnesses innovation and science to improve pupils and teachers in Lagos’ public schools. So encouraging females to study science is a priority to us.”

    Ede poly students protest killing of colleague, motorcyclist

    There was tension yesterday in Ede town, the host community of Federal Polytechnic, Osun State, as students went on the rampage to protest the killing of a prospective corps member and a commercial motorcyclist.

    The Nation gathered that the prospective corps member, Hassan, had just graduated from the institution, but was still in the community to tidy up his clearance before proceeding for the compulsory youth service.

    A resident of the community, Kabiru, told our correspondent that “Hassan and the motorcyclist were shot several times at Bode, via Agbalemobode, around 10pm on Wednesday.

    “On Thursday morning, students thronged the streets and made bonfires at junctions. They were so violent in their protest. Shops and businesses were closed down around the campus because the students attacked residents.”

    The polytechnic spokesman, Sola Lawal, confirmed the incident.

    He said:  “An HND graduate of Banking and Finance, Hassan Adedeji, who was awaiting the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter, and a commercial motorcyclist were shot dead last night in Ede.

    “The polytechnic management is very sad about this unfortunate incident. Let me use this medium to appeal to our students to remain calm and law-abiding, while we await final police investigation of the dastardly act.

    “May Almighty God give the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

    Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola said Rasheed Okolu, a suspected cultist, is the prime suspect in the murder case.

    She said Police Commissioner Mr. Olawale Olokode had promised to bring him (Okolu) to justice.
