    APC okays Osun congress result

The Chairman-elect of Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Gboyega Famodun, yesterday urged disgruntled members of the party to work for its unity.

He said that the loyalists of the Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who conducted a parallel congress, should not see themselves as opposition, but a family member of the APC.

The five-man Appeal Panel constituted by the national secretariat of the APC has affirmed the victory of other state officers.

It noted that “the panel did not receive any petition or appeal since its inauguration on October 21 by the leadership of the party at the national secretariat in Abuja.”

Famodun, answering questions from reporters at the state secretariat in Osogbo, said: “Aregbesola’s loyalists are card-carrying members of the party that have enjoyed press patronage in creating an impression that they are the opposition. They are not; they are just a pressure group that seeks relevance within the party.

“One of them once said that they are not in politics for service, but patronage either through political appointments and contracts. APC is not for that.

“Police do not give a permit for one party to have two congresses, it is most illegal. What we heard at the stadium is legal, the governor decided to look away because he knows that they are members of the same family.”

He noted that they could not be disgruntled because they did not get political appointments.

The Chairman of the Appeal Committee,  Obed Wadzani, said that the decision of the panel to affirm the results of the state congress conducted and supervised by the Gbenga Elegbeleye-led state Congress Committee was, therefore, taken in the absence of any petition or appeal.

Outstanding pupils shine at Whitehall awards

To celebrate excellence,  parents , teachers and administrators of Universal White Hall Schools, Fagba, Lagos recently had a memorable award and dinner with the theme: The beginning of a new Crest 2021.

The colourful event which took place at  Blue Ribbon Event Centre, Abule Egba Lagos had presentations from the graduands, outgoing headboy and girl as well as  the Leadership of the Parents Teachers Association( PTA).

The event had 65 graduands and a number of dignitaries in attendance. High Commissioner of Namibia to Nigeria, His Excellency, Humphrey Gelseb, congratulated the graduating students, noting, “When we were here a year before last, there were different people in your seat and today they are not here.

That shows that a person can only graduate once at this level. There is no way you can graduate this year and then graduate next year again.”He therefore said the students should not take for granted their graduation as it was very significant.

He commended the students for the hard work, and the extra miles they went to ensure that they did well in their academic works and also graduated in a grand style. He said: “When we gathered here a year before last, it was a different era and today too it is a completely changed world because of the impact of Covid-19 pandemic.””Many of us in Namibia have lost many relatives. We have lost close to 3,200 people and it is really a difficult time for our country. We are trying to get together resources to buy a lot of vaccines to ensure that plenty of people get to take the vaccines. So it is really a difficult year not only for Namibia but also for Nigeria and other parts of the world. We all need to combat this pandemic and make sure that our people are safe.”So in the midst of all the pandemics, it is really noble that the school authority has put extra efforts to make sure that the graduating students had a fulfilling graduation ceremony.”With respect to the proprietor, I really want to thank you for allowing our children from Namibia to attend school here. It is not easy when you have close to 200 million people in Nigeria and we know that your slots in WAEC and high institutions are highly sought after yet you still accommodate Namibian students in your school. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of their parents for giving them this education. It really means a lot to these parents.”He commended the parents for the opportunity they have given to their children to become secondary school graduates, adding that unfortunately some parents did not have the opportunity to witness their children graduation after so many years of encouragement to see that their children did well academically, adding that for those that had the privileged to witness their children graduation, they should appreciate the moment as it is really a special privilege for them and especially their children. The Managing Director, Universal White Hall Schools, Alexander Ogedengbe, while appreciating guests, parents, guardians, and of course the students for all the efforts put to make the occasion successful and most importantly entrusting their children to the school`s care, said, “For us to be able to educate them, what we promised was that we were going to return the children better than they came and we have achieved that.He beseeched the students to put into proper use all they have learned while in school now they were going outside the confines of the school.

Akeredolu to women: check your breasts regularly to prevent cancer mortality

Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has urged women to always conduct regular checks on their breasts to prevent the rate of mortalities associated with breast cancer in the country.

Mrs Akeredolu, who is the founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), stated this yesterday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, when she joined the state chapter of the association on an awareness walk tagged, ‘Jog for Life’.

The awareness walk was part of the activities to inaugurate the state chapter of BRECAN.

The Ondo First Lady said BRECAN was embarking on breast cancer awareness campaigns across the states of the country.

Mrs Akeredolu said: “Breast cancer is not deadly as women think, but early detection and prompt medical attention can cure the disease, thereby reducing the rate of mortality.

”I survived breast cancer; awareness leads to action and we don’t want awareness to die. Breast cancer is curable if you do the needful.

“We can’t get tired of talking to women about what they should do. They should check their breasts and carry out breast examination regularly. Doing this gives power to detect anything that has gone wrong with the breast. if regular checking is not done, there is no way they can notice unusual changes in the breast.

“If you notice any unsual changes such as lumps, discharge from nipples whether watery or bloody when you are not breastfeeding, there is no reason it should be discharged from the nipples. These signs are red flag that something is wrong. You have to go to the hospital for medical check- up.

“I want to assure everybody today, that women are increasingly surviving breast cancer even here in Bayelsa State.”

Also, wife of Bayelsa State Governor, Dr Gloria Diri, who joined the breast cancer awareness walk, promised to key into the sensitisation drive.

She promised to ensure that women from the communities in the state are properly sensitised on preventive measures against breast cancer.
