Lagos makes health insurance scheme mandatory for residents

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday launched the mandatory regulation of the Lagos State Health Scheme (LSHS), making it mandatory for residents, whether corporate or individuals, to own the health insurance scheme.

Launching the scheme in Ikeja, the governor said anyone who could not show evidence of having any health plan would not be able to enjoy or transact any business with the state government.

He said the need to ensure the attainment of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) made it mandatory for the government to begin the full implementation of the Lagos State Health Scheme, passed by the House of Assembly in May 2015.

Under the law, Sanwo-Olu said it is mandatory for residents to have the health scheme, which makes health care financing affordable and available to all, irrespective of class or status.

The governor, represented by a health economist and Technical Assistant to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olumide Okulaja, said the government had enlisted civil servants in the scheme and urged the private sector to key into it.

He said the need to push for the attainment of the Universal Health Coverage necessitated the implementation of the provisions of the LSHS Law.

Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) initiative falls within his administration’s THEMES agenda, which is based on the belief that the best can only be got from the people when they are healthy.

He added that their health care needs would be met at all times.

  • Why we want Tinubu to run, by SWAGA’23

Why we want Tinubu to run, by SWAGA’23

The Deputy National Chairman of the Southwest Agenda 2023 (SWAGA ‘23), Senator Adesoji Akanbi, has urged Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to run for president in 2023 because he has the experience, wisdom and capability.

He congratulated the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his safe return to the country after a successful medical trip abroad.

Akanbi told reporters in Lagos: “Asiwaju is like an open book, all well monitored. If he talks, it is news. So there is little or nothing hidden about his recent trip abroad. The good thing is that he is back, looking good and healthy. We are glad that he is back, very healthy and sound. That’s the good news.”

He added: “Asiwaju is a pathfinder and a problem solver. He plans ahead. He doesn’t dwell on the mistakes of the past. He learns from the past and moves on. At the moment, he is the unifying force for the country. And the good aspect is that we can see his records since he was the governor of Lagos and after he left, till today.

“Look at his team then and look at where most of them are today. He is result oriented and I can safely tell you that he believes in equity, fairness and justice. I can go on and on to say more. He is a very consistent person.”

Commenting on Tinubu’s political aspiration for the presidency in 2023, Akanbi said: “As you are aware, Asiwaju has not spoken on this matter. The initiative belongs to SWAGA 23. With SWAGA’ 23, we believe intelligently that SWAGA started for the good of the country, and it is more like a rallying point, which started from the regions and we believe that so far so good, like our leaders in the North too want equity and justice by conceding to give the presidential ticket to a southerner.

“This is why the Southwest wants to put its best candidate out there. Let’s assume that eventually, all concede to a southern ticket. This move of ours will galvanise APC to win the coming election. Asiwaju is a fantastic person, in a fantastic position. His friends are all over.”

On whether Nigerians will vote for the APC in the next presidential election, he said the election is not going to be about the party, but about the individual.

“This is why we are resolute on Tinubu. He has friends across the board, across the country. Truly, he is a Nigerian and that goes beyond party lines. So, it won’t be about the APC or any party, it will be about the individual,” Akanbi stressed.

  • Ex-deputy speaker escapes jail

    Ex-deputy speaker escapes jail

A former deputy speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Iroju Ogundeji, yesterday narrowly escaped being sent to jail for filing what was termed a contemptuous petition against the Chief Judge, Justice Williams Akintoroye.

Ogundeji, who is challenging his impeachment as the deputy speaker at the court, accused the chief judge of being biased and prejudiced against him, saying he was not comfortable with the fraternisation between the defendants and the chief judge.

In the petition submitted to the chief registrar of the court, Ogundeji said the elevation of Justice Akintoroye to the position of chief judge will not enable him to dispense with the case, which is time bound.

He said the chief judge would be preoccupied with a lot of administrative duties, which he noted would hamper the speedy prosecution of the case.

The petition said: “Your Lordship expressly praised the speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly and his estranged deputy during your Lordship’s confirmation on September 28, 2021. The position that is in contention before your Lordship.

“Your Lordship expressly mentioned that the House was stable in recent times because of the harmony between the speaker and the disputed deputy speaker. The House that is divided against itself will never hold.”

When the case came up for hearing yesterday, Justice Akintoroye announced his withdrawal from the suit.

He stated that he laboured for many years to build a name and would not want it to be dented because of a political case.

The Ondo chief judge noted that the petition against him was contemptuous, but said he would not commit the embattled lawmaker to prison for the offence against the integrity of the court.

He said:  “I have my name to protect. I have laboured day and night to protect the only legacy I have, which is my name. I have not desecrated this seat. I have worked in virtually all judicial divisions in Ondo State without blemish. I practised for 18 years before I was appointed as a judge.”

Justice Akintoroye said all allegations against him in the past had been dismissed because he did not have any skeleton in his cupboard.

He added that he is a man with white garments, who will not go near oil.

He transferred the case to another registry to be assigned to another court for adjudication.

  • ‘UNILORIN was a pariah for 19 years over ASUU’

‘UNILORIN was a pariah for 19 years over ASUU’

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. Sulyman AbdulKareem, yesterday said that the consequences of the refusal of the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to join mainstream ASUU for 19 years were dire and unimaginable.

AbdulKareem, who spoke to reporters in Ilorin, as part of activities for the university’s 36th convocation, said: “I will not regret until I go to my grave making peace among people. I was a pressure in this university and I was part of those who thought it was wrong for ASUU to go on strike. I know I spoke to more than a dozen people to convince them not to go on strike, but eventually 49 people stood out and said they would not join the rest of us.”

“Over those 19 years that UNILORIN did not join mainstream ASUU, if you know the number of lives that was imperiled or put in danger, you will feel sorry for this university.

“I remember when I first became the VC, there was an occasion where somebody called me from the University of Ibadan and said he was going to be lynched. It got to a point where our students were even being victimised, when they went for either training or industrial attachment. The truth of the matter is that UNILORIN paid a huge price for not joining ASUU.”
