Crisis rocks Enugu community as two monarchs lay claim to stool

There is tension at Mburubu Community in Nkanu East Local Government of Enugu State, as two monarchs lay claim to the community’s royal stool, two years after the death of their last ruler, His Majesty, Igwe Emmanuel Ezeh (Ozulumba I of Mburubu Kingdom).

The two leaders fighting over the stool are, Chief Patrick Onuokaibe and High Chief Linus Igbudu.

While the Mburubu General Assembly chose Onuokaibe in the last week of December 2023, Igbudu was unanimously elected by delegates from the seven villages that make up the community under the supervision of Mburubu Town Union (MTU) in the second week of this month.

The two leaders had since been presented to Nkanu East Local Government authorities for onward presentation to the state government for recognition and presentation of staff of office.

Speaking after presenting Onuokaibe to the local government, the President, Mburubu General Assembly, Chief Chijioke Nwachukwu, said he had exhibited notable qualities which stood him out in the kingdom, hence the decision of the people to select him as their traditional ruler.

Onuokaibe’s choice was, however, refuted and disowned by the Mburubu Council of Chiefs, also known as the Igwe Cabinet, who accused some leaders of the community of plotting to turn the community into their personal fiefdom.

This was followed by the election of Igbudu as the authentic Igwe-elect for the community by the Mburubu Town Union (MTU).

Speaking also during the presentation of Igbudu to the council chairman, the President-General, Chief Emmanuel Edeh, said while the community was concluding the observation of a two-year mourning period for the late traditional ruler, Igwe Ezeh, it was only natural that the community scout for a new king to be in custody of the traditions and customs of Mburubu ancient kingdom.

Abia varsity teachers begin strike over 11-month salary arrears

Members of the academic and non-academic staff unions of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu have continued to stay away from office, following the inability of the state government to pay their 11-month salary arrears.

It was gathered that the workers, through their union leaders, had given the management up till December 31 to pay their salary arrears.

Our correspondent reports that ABSU students, who were supposed to resume after the Christmas and New Year holidays, are not yet back in school because of the industrial action, although there were rumours that some of the lecturers had promised to organise classes for their students, to cover-up for the lost weeks.

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU, Uturu chapter, Dr. Chidi Mbah, in a monitored interview, confirmed that they embarked on the industrial action because of an 11- month salary arrears owed members.

He said: “We are on strike based on issues, especially because of the 11- month salary arrears.

“It cuts across 2011, 2012 and 2022. Since the incumbent government came to power, it has been up and doing. They have been releasing subventions for the university to augment.

“However, we know that the subvention isn’t enough because the wage bill is about N320million, while Governor Alex Otti releases N100million per month, which was what he inherited from his predecessor.

“But since he (Otti) came onboard, he has been releasing that money regularly, but we have a deficit of N220million.

“According to the management, the revenue generated by the school to augment whatever the state government gives, unfortunately, isn’t enough to pay all workers because of the high level of payment we have at the epic of the workers level.

“Since the assumption of the new government, we have not been owed salary, although the December salary was paid two weeks ago; some have received, while others are yet to receive theirs.

“Government is a continuum, we have already written to the state government and the management. We did so since last September 26.”

“We told them that we would down tools if nothing was done until December 31. This is why we have embarked on strike.

“We are not fighting the management or the state government; we only want the state government to hear our voice. We want them to know that we are in pains; things are more okay with us. They should come to our aid.

“We were supposed to meet with the state government, but for the date that coincided with the Supreme Court’s judgment and since then, we have not secured another meeting date with the state government.

“The governor since coming onboard has been paying our subventions and has shown goodwill by inviting us for discussion.”

‘Publication of new Akwa Ibom map will lead to anarchy’

Akwa Ibom youths, under the auspices of Obolo Youth Coalition Worldwide, have warned that the disputed new map of the state will lead to anarchy.

The group urged the state government to remove the map from the official calendar of the state, for peace to reign.

In a statement to our correspondent in Uyo, Obolo youths said the publication of the map was still subject to litigation in the official 2024 calendar of the state government.

Several communities and groups in Eastern Obolo had opposed the map, which ceded some villages and ancestral coastal region and land to Ibibio people of Eket, Esit Eket, Onna, Mkpat Enin and Ikot Abasi.

The map, which was initiated by the former governor, Udom Emmanuel,

In a letter addressed to Governor Umo Eno, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Uyo yesterday, the group expressed disappointment over the handling of the Traditional Rulers Amended Law and the infrastructural neglect of the area by successive governments.

The letter was signed by Emmanuel Essang and Animisa Romokere Mark, president-general and secretary-general, Obolo Youth Coalition (OYC) Worldwide.

The letter, which frowned at the non-appointment of commissioner from Eastern Obolo extraction into the state executive council, was also endorsed by Edet Eyo, national president, Oro Youth Movement and Edet Iyahakwa, national secretary-general, Oro Youth Movement and others.

  • Enugu doctors set for indefinite strike

Enugu doctors set for indefinite strike

Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu says it will embark on indefinite strike over shortage of doctors, insecurity and poor sponsorship of residency programme.

The doctors said the strike would begin on January 31, after seven weeks of notice in which their earlier third series of notification of ultimatum to the Enugu State Government to do the needful and meet their demands failed.

This is contained in a communique issued yesterday after the end of the Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of ARD at ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu held on December 8, 2023.

The communique was signed by the President of ARD-ESUT, Dr. Chukwunonso Ofonere and Secretary General, Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani.

It said the EGM observed with regret, silence from the management of the hospital on the 14-day ultimatum issued and another 49 days of grace following the ultimatum expiration for it to meet the demands of the association.

The statement said the management of ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane and Enugu State Government had failed to declare a state of emergency on employment of doctors and safety and security within the hospital.

According to the statement, the EGM observed that it is over 180 days since the government through the Secretary to the State Government promised the ARD employment of medical officers, resident doctors and payment of Medical Residency Training Funds (MRTF), lamenting that they were yet to see the employment of doctors.

It said the EGM noted that the security men placed at the gate were no longer there and direct daily assault on doctors had increased again; while safety of doctors and other health workers at the hospital could not be guaranteed.

“The management should declare a state of emergency on the employment of doctors at the hospital. There should be urgent approval for the recruitment of medical officers, resident doctors and house officers at the hospital.

“This recruitment should be focused especially at the Accident and Emergency Department, Surgery Department, Internal Medicine Department, Paediatrics Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and resident doctors that have left our institution in the past four years and were never replaced.

“Management should ensure implementation of safety policies to protect her workers against physical attacks and kidnap by restoring the daily police and other covert security personnel deployed in the hospital.

“The 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) has not been paid and exam bodies are closing their adverts,” it said.

The statement added that salary increment had not been looked into at all; even as house officers were excluded from the hardship/palliative of N25,000 given by the state governor.

“We are still back to where we were in 2023 or even worse as plans are on the way to increase the rents of those living at the hospital quarters (one bedroom apartment) by about 375 per cent from N8,000 to N30,000 monthly.

“This will escalate the already palpable crises and we will be left with no other alternatives but to protect the interest and welfare of our members.

“January 31, 2024 is here already and the doctors are mobilising for an indefinite, total and maybe protracted industrial action if nothing is done,” it said.

The doctors also pleaded that the state government led by Peter Mbah, in his charismatic way, should intervene, to avoid hardship and loss of lives that might occur if there was disruption in health care delivery in Enugu State.

  • ‘YPP governorship candidate’s defection a boost for Akwa Ibom APC’

‘YPP governorship candidate’s defection a boost for Akwa Ibom APC’

The defection of the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2023 general election, Senator Bassey Akpan, has been described as a big boost for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

Akpan, who lost his appeal at the Federal Appeal Court to Governor Umo Eno, defected to the APC last weekend alongside the state Chairman of YPP, Nyeneime Andy, at Ukana, Essien Udim home of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

United States-based medical professional and humanist, Dr. Marshall Umoren, described the development as a “huge plus to APC”, during a phone interview with The Nation in Uyo.

He said: “Sen Akpan’s (OBA’s) defection is a huge plus for APC in Akwa Ibom. His defection is bringing a lot of good fortune to the party, considering the dynamics of party politics in Nigeria.”

Umoren added: “OBA (as Sen. Akpan is often addressed by associates and his political followers) is bringing a lot of things into APC, and this may be the game-changer in 2027.”

“His popularity, political acumen, capacity and mobilisational ability at the grassroots will bring about a considerable Teutonic shock, especially with his mass appeal to youths.”

He said Akpan is a great dislodgement and shift of youth energy and power across the political structures of the state.

“He has been reckoned with in political circles as a great influencer, especially while he was subsisting within the ruling PDP in the state.

“His growing influence is not in the least whittling. Given his deft ability to ginger youths and possessing the acknowledged outreach to increasingly identify with the grassroots, this can indeed be the needed tonic to re-galvanise his political machinery,” Umoren noted.

Alleged N320m fraud: You’ve case to answer, court tells Delta Rep

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the no-case submission made by a House of Representatives member, Nicholas Mutu, being tried with two others on money laundering related charges.

Mutu (representing Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency of Delta State) is, along two others – Airworld Technologies Ltd and Oyien Homes Ltd – accused of laundering about N320million.

Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo, in a ruling yesterday, ordered Mutu and his co-defendants to enter their defence as they have a case to answer in respect of the allegations made against them in the 13-count amended charge on which they are being tried.

Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo held that the prosecution has adduced sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against the three defendants to warrant their being called upon to enter defence.

The judge adjourned till February 21 and 22 for the defendants to open their defence.

Mutu, described as the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, who has maintained his seat since he was first elected in 1999, was said to have committed the alleged offences between August 2014 and August 2016 when he served as the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In the charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/123/2019, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleged that Mutu, while being the Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC, between August 2014 and August 2016 “did procure Airworld Technologies Ltd to conceal of the sum of N320,159, 689.63 to be paid by Starline Consultancy Services Ltd when you reasonably ought to have known that the said sum of N320, 159, 689.63 formed part of proceeds of corruption, gratification and fraudulent acquisition of property.”

Opposing the no-case submissions, prosecuting lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho, argued that the money paid to the defendants by Starline Consultancy, a contractor to NDDC, amounted to gratification.

Iheanacho added that Mutu used his official position, as the Chairman of House Committee on NDDC, to accept the various sums of money paid by the NDDC contractor.

The prosecuting lawyer contended that Mutu’s alleged conduct violated the provision of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences (ICPC) Act and Code of Conduct for public officers, which constitute predicate offences to the money laundering offence for which he was being prosecuted.

‘Anti-Wike elements responsible for kidnapping in FCT’

A coalition of Nigerians in the United States of America and the United Kingdom has alleged that the worrisome rates of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal acts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are perpetrated by those against the pragmatic developmental strategy of the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

The coalition, under the auspices of the United Nigerians for True Federalism (UNTF), North America Chapter, made the claim yesterday in an electronic mail statement by its Secretary General, Mr. Kenneth Friday.

UNTF, whose members are made up of professional engineers, medical practitioners, lawyers, retired military personnel, among others, expressing concerns about the incessant cases of kidnapping and banditry in Abuja, expressed confidence in the ability of Wike, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security chiefs to tackle insecurity.

They claimed that the anti-Wike elements were uncomfortable with the achievements of the minister in the FCT with infrastructural projects, savings of over N100billion in less than six months in office, and ordering of contractors with abandoned public projects to resume work or face the law.

They also alleged that “these same wicked elements are against Wike’s support for President Tinubu and are bent on instigating and sponsoring kidnapping and insecurity close to the power base in Abuja, to sow discord and disrupt the relationship between him and the President.

They urged Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to withdraw excessive security aides attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) and politicians and deploy them to join the proposed Presidential Security Task Force to tackle crime in the FCT.

Group urges modernising programmes for Delta State

A foremost political pressure group in Delta State, Delta Unity Group (DUG), has congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and urged him to implement modernisation programmes, to bring about better quality of life for the people.

This is coming on the heels of Friday’s judgment of the Supreme Court, which affirmed the election of Governor Oborevwori.

DUG in a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Sir Sunny Areh, while congratulating Oborevwori, said “the long winding and tortuous legal battle has come to an end.”

Titled: ‘At The End, It’s All About Deltans’, the body said the judgment has ended challenges with respect to the 2023 governorship election, and wished the governor well “as he pilots the affairs of Delta State in the next three and a half years.”

The statement said: “After a long winding and tortuous legal challenge to the election of Sheriff Oborevwori as governor of Delta State, the process came to a definite conclusion on January 19 when the Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, ruled in favour of the governor.

“The judgment ends all challenges to his election. We congratulate Governor Oborevwori on his victory and wish him well as he pilots the affairs of Delta State for the next three and a half years.

“At Delta Unity Group (DUG), our position was inspired by the desire to chart a fresh course in the developmental trajectory of our people, a drive we share with progressive and committed ‘Deltans’.

“We remain committed to putting our people on sound developmental pedestal and will always support all efforts, programmes and policies geared towards improving their lot.

“As democrats, the DUG believes in the effectiveness of the democratic process and institutions as vehicles for attaining the aspirations of our people to high quality of life and security. We will work for the strengthening of our democratic institutions as we believe the fundamental objective of governance is the uplifting of the welfare and well-being of the people.

“Finally, we enjoin the governor to develop and implement modernisation programmes designed to bring better quality of living for the people of Delta State.”

  • ‘Nwifuru didn’t reject PDP, APGA opponents’

‘Nwifuru didn’t reject PDP, APGA opponents’

Ebonyi State Government at the weekend debunked media report that Governor Francis Nwifuru has promised not to accommodate his major challengers in the 2023 general election in his government for suing him.

Some media reports had quoted the governor as saying that the duo of Chukwuma Odii of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Prof.  Bernard Odoh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) were not needed in his administration.

The reports had heated up the polity, following reactions, with one group issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to the governor to withdraw the statement.

But the state government said the governor was misquoted, describing it as ill-intended, false and myopic.

Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Jude Okpor, said in Abakaliki, the capital: “Ebonyi State Government has noted with utter dismay, reactions in some quarters emanating from some distorted reports from some sections of the media over Governor Nwifuru’s statement while addressing stakeholders on January 14, concerning his electoral victory at the Supreme Court.

“It is unfortunate that the well-intended and articulate address of the governor was mischievously lifted in part and quoted out of context by such media representatives in the state for some clandestine reasons, best known to them.

“The report published in some media outlets, which had it that the governor avowed his determination not to forgive, accommodate or work with his election challengers in court: Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii of the PDP and Bernard Ifeanyichukwu Odoh of APGA, and their supporters, is to say the least, false, myopic and ill-intended.

“For the purpose of straightening the records, the governor on that day, in his usual forthrightness and plainness of heart, narrated the tortuous and unpleasant experience he had in the course of following the avoidable litigations from the tribunal, through the Appeal to the Supreme Court, where it was finally nailed in his favour.”

He noted that the governor, being a man of integrity, whose words were reliable, expected his opponents to respect their words as well by ceasing further litigations as promised after meetings with them.

According to him, the governor at the meeting expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that one of them reneged on his words by serving him a suit notice a day after their meeting.

He said the governor considered the action contradictory to his eternalised values of integrity and reliability.

The commissioner said the governor regretted the unwarranted prolonged litigations brought to the government and people of the state, and wished it never happened so.

“Governor Nwifuru in his statement did not in any way condemn his opponents for seeking redress according to their conscience in courts of competent jurisdiction.

“Recall that the governor, being a professing and practical democrat, after winning at the polls, reached out to his opponents with the olive branch, which was unfortunately rebuffed.

“The governor, not relenting, for the good and unity of the state, still approached them individually to sheathe their swords, but they were adamant.

“Their going to court, though a huge miscalculation on their part, was considered by the governor as the best approach, which has eventually brought to rest the divergent interests, paving the way for a possible corporate action by all and sundry towards the development and continued oneness of the state.

“Governor Nwifuru, in his statement during the meeting, merely expressed ordinary human sentiment that going by the level of deceit and seemingly irreconcilable stance of the PDP and the APGA candidates prior to the Supreme Court ruling, it would ordinarily have become very difficult to freely work with them.

“However, since the interest of the state is paramount to any individual’s interest, such a feeling could not be allowed to fertilise.

“The governor’s camaraderie spirit and positive disposition in embracing all ‘Ebonyians’, including his opponents in the election, were summarily emphasised by his last statement at the meeting.

“So, sincerely, I tender an apology on their behalf, for us as a state to forgive them. We should forgive them for they knew not what they were doing, and I am sure we are going to forgive them in Jesus’ name,” Okpor said.

Diri urges citizens to prioritise thanksgiving

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has urged the people to take thanksgiving to God seriously for what He has done and is still doing.

He gave the advice yesterday when he attended the 10th edition of the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area annual thanksgiving in Sampou (his country home).

The governor thanked the visioner of the event, Apostle David Aggrey, the General Overseer of the Royal House of Grace International Church and other organisers, for putting the programme together.

He said the people of Kolokuma/Opokuma had every reason to thank God for all He had done, beginning from championing the struggle for the emancipation of the Niger Delta by the late Major Isaac Adaka Boro, for the creation of Bayelsa State, and now to producing a governor (himself).

Diri urged the people to take the thanksgiving seriously, saying it attracted the blessings of God by always thanking Him.
