Drivers petition police over multiple taxes, intimidation

The leadership of Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (DWAN), Yenagoa chapter, Bayelsa State, has cried out over the alleged intimidation and imposition of multiple taxes on its members.

It appealed to the government to address the issue, to prevent breakdown of law and order.

DWAN, in a statement yesterday by its Chairman, Mr. Igorki Major, said the petition had been sent to the Bayelsa State Government and Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, headquartered in Yenagoa.

Major accused some non-state actors and individuals in military uniform of compelling its members to buy all manner of illegal tickets at Emiligo, Ayon and Okolomadi communities around Oruma in Ogbia Local Government.

The DWAN boss expressed similar challenges in Sagbama and Southern Ijaw councils where certain individuals claimed to be selling Local Government Operational Permit, Environmental Sanitation Stickers and all sorts of tickets despite that members already have duly approved Unified Stickers and Daily Tickets from the Bayelsa State Revenue Board (BSRB).

Major urged the state government and security agencies to address those illegal operators in the interest of peace and security of the state, noting that the drivers were uncomfortable with the sad development, which might negatively impact the state’s transport sector.

He, however, pledged the association’s commitment to collaborate with government and non-governmental agencies to create a peaceful and secure atmosphere in the state.

Major advised the government and the police to act quickly on the petition and swing into action, to avoid a serious backlash with the extortionists ripping them off with audacious impunity.

He reiterated the group’s dedication in promoting and empowering its members, fostering unity, ensuring compliance with extant rules and regulations in the transport sector and the broader society.

  • Shaibu’s ally tackles Obaseki over Govt House Chapel upgrade

Shaibu’s ally tackles Obaseki over Govt House Chapel upgrade

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has been accused by an ally of his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, of being economical with the truth on the avoidable face-off over the renovation of Edo Interdenominational Government House Chapel in Benin.

Obaseki, on Wednesday, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Religious Matters, Rev. Osagie Ehrunmwunse, who is also the Pastor-in-Charge of the chapel, accused Shaibu of mischief over the renovation of the chapel.

Edo governor insisted it was unfortunate that Shaibu continued to stir controversy over the renovation of the chapel.

However, the deputy governor’s associate yesterday described Obaseki’s statement as an afterthought.

He said: “They are jittery, because God is already fighting His own battle, as they have

decided to dismount the chapel, which has been in existence for over two decades, for the sake of politics. No doubt, as men of God, we see it as sacrilegious.

“In their desperation, they hurriedly put out an unsigned extract, purported to be Exco decision. The question here is, why was it not signed? The statements of defence, separately issued by Obaseki’s Special Adviser on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie and Ehrunmwunse are in conflict. In one breath, the chapel is still in use (for Governor Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, only, since they have now relocated to the Government House). In another breath, an alternative place of worship has been provided within the Government House.

“The same chapel was repainted last November, in preparation for Christmas. How come a whopping sum of N300,161,278.17 was approved for another renovation? Yet, this government has less than 10 months to exit office? In fact, the money can put up a new chapel building. All these do not add up. It shows that some persons are only being economical with the truth.

“If not for mischief, and a clear declaration of war on the house of God, how come that the Catechist was given a verbal notice to pack out of the chapel ‘immediately’, or else he will meet his things outside?’ If actually the so-called renovation was well intentioned, there would have been a written notice to that effect, to those concerned.”

Shaibu’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, was contacted for his reaction, but he declined to respond.

The Edo deputy governor ally declared that it was obvious the actions of Obaseki and his aides were clearly a declaration of war on the church, especially the Catholic faith, which Shaibu belongs to.

Obaseki in Wednesday’s statement also alleged that his deputy was trying to use things Nigerians and Edo people see and hold as sacred, such as religion, to whip up political sentiments.

He said: “In the last couple of days, we have seen posts on social media and various media outfits, suggesting that the state government has shut down the chapel, and prevented people from using it as a place of worship.”

“Following closely from this narrative, our dear brother, the deputy governor, held an outdoor mass with some catholic faithful, clearly showing that he is the mastermind behind the persons circulating the video and the accompanying false commentary, as his actions seek to curiously authenticate their false claims.

“It is unfortunate that the deputy governor has embarked on this lowly adventure, attempting to stoke religious animosity to embarrass the government, in which he serves.

“We want to bring the attention of the public and other relevant stakeholders to the fact that Deputy Governor Shaibu was present at the 57th Exco meeting held on November 1, 2023 when approval was given for the renovation and remodelling of the Government House Interdenominational Chapel. He served as vice chairman of the council at that meeting. The project is being handled by Edo State Public Building and Maintenance Agency.”

Obaseki also urged Shaibu to deploy the efforts being used for mischief to his political (governorship) aspiration, and not use sacred matters as materials for his campaign.

The governor said he believed many things might be permissible in politics, but not profaning God’s name for the purpose of gaining cheap sympathy, and trying to blackmail the government in which he serves as the number two citizen of the state.

Police arrest Ikpeazu’s chief of staff

Personnel of the Abia State Police Command yesterday arrested Chief of Staff to former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Prof. A.C.B. Agbazuere.

He was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election.

The Nation learnt that the Chairman of Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the Recovery of Government Property and Funds, Justice Florence Duruoha-Igwe (Rtd), had issued a bench warrant on the former Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff to the Office of the Deputy Governor, Don Ubani.

While Agbazuere was asked to come and give evidence before the panel on why he was still in possession of his official car, a Toyota Hilux Land Cruiser, allegedly in his possession since he left office, Ubani was served a bench warrant on his alleged failure to appear before the panel and his inability to file a response to a notice served him on November 30, 2023.

Justice Duruoha-Igwe (Rtd), who adjourned the matter till January 24, directed that Agbazuere be arrested and produced for further cross examination. She also directed that the ex-Chief of Staff to the Deputy Governor’s Office should be arrested and brought before it.

While Agbazuere was reportedly arrested yesterday morning, the whereabouts of his counterpart at press time was unknown.

Sources said Agbazuere, who was influential during the Ikpeazu-led administration, was reportedly arrested while he was preparing to honour the invitation of the panel.

It was gathered that the ex-Chief of Staff had filed a suit at the Federal High Court over the harassment and intimidation by the panel over a PRADO Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) given to him as take home by the Ikpeazu administration.

Agbazuere, who spoke from where was detained by the police, said while he was away to Abuja, a letter of invitation from Abia Property Recovery Panel was dropped with his gateman and was followed by a bench warrant, which he said was not the right procedure.

He wondered why he was the only person invited by the panel, saying he had approached the Federal High Court over the same matter and wondered why the police issued a bench warrant.

Agbazuere, who claimed to have arrived the state from Abuja on Tuesday evening, said he was ready to honour the invitation of the panel and was surprised seeing a large number of policemen arriving his home to effect his arrest.

He alleged that the plan by the state government was to keep him in the custody of the police and engage in frivolous adjournments.

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reconciled with the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, over their battle involving traditional rulers.

As a result, the governor has reinstated the suspended traditional ruler of Neni in Anaocha Local Government, Igwe Damian Ezeani.

The monarch, among others, was alleged to have conferred unauthorised chieftaincy titles on some persons, especially Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, who has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ubah was said to be preparing to challenge Soludo for the governorship next year.

Following the suspension and other issues, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, wrote a letter, condemning Soludo and his commissioner, saying they had no regard for traditional institution.

But in a statement in Awka yesterday, the Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Aburime, said the governor had reinstated the suspended Neni monarch and forgiven two others of their infractions.

Prepare your handover notes, Diri tells commissioners, others

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has directed members of the state executive council (Exco) to begin to prepare their handover notes, as his first term in office winds down.

Diri will be sworn in for another term on February 14.

He gave the directive yesterday during the 126th state executive council meeting inside the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor asked them to dot the i’s and cross the t’s in their handover notes, to achieve a smooth transition to his second term.

He hailed his Exco members for adding value to the state through their performance and thanked them for the selfless service they rendered in the last four years.

Diri noted that the achievements recorded by his administration in its first term were collective and not an exclusive preserve of himself or his deputy.

He advised them to continue to contribute their best till the end of the term.

Diri said: “As you are aware, our administration is winding down its first tenure and I know you will not wait for me to tell you to start preparing your handover notes. I believe some of you have started from last year. At the end of the day, everybody will see what you have done.

“I want to commend you for the selfless service you have rendered in the last four years and as you prepare your notes, dot the i’s and cross the t’s. So, for future purposes, those who will take over or even if you are continuing, you will be guided.

“I commend you for the spirit of oneness, unity and love we all saw in this executive council. That is why we have achieved so much under these four years. This is why the people said this government must come back for the next four years.

“It was not an exclusive preserve of myself as governor or my deputy governor. Yes, we led the pack, but all of you contributed very well to the successes we have recorded in infrastructure, education, health, sports, security and even in the judiciary.

“So on behalf of the deputy governor, I say a big thank you to this state executive council. We have not dissolved the Exco yet and today is not the last day.”

Earlier, the council held a valedictory session for a late former Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Steven Ogullah.

Diri said it was the policy of his administration to honour Exco members that served meritoriously.

He, however, said he would propose an amendment to the policy to ensure that only those who served the state without blemish would be honoured.

Diri described the late Finance commissioner as a dedicated man, who gave his all to the service of the state and that he would be greatly missed.

He said even out of office, Ogullah remained committed to service to the state, as he was very supportive of his administration until his last days.

Ex-IYC boss urges Tinubu to relocate oil-related agencies

A former president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Udengs Eradiri, an engineer; has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order relocation of some critical oil-related agencies to the Niger Delta.

Eradiri, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, hailed President Tinubu for approving the relocation of key commercial agencies from Abuja to Lagos.

Eradiri, ex-commissioner in Bayelsa, in a statement he signed yesterday, said decongesting Abuja, which he described as the political capital, was long overdue.

He said some of the agencies being moved to Lagos, particularly key agencies of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), had no business being in Abuja.

Eradiri said: “Lagos is the commercial capital of Nigeria and key commercial agencies, parastatals and other trade-related establishments belonging to the Federal Government are supposed to have their headquarters in Lagos State, to facilitate smooth business operations and ensure the ease of doing business in the country.

“Nobody should read any political dimension to it because in the first place, they were not supposed to be in Abuja. We should not play politics with some decisions because the government got this one spot on.”

He, however, appealed to Tinubu to relocate key oil-related establishments and agencies owned by the Federal Government to the Niger Delta.

Eradiri called on the President to compel the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to move the headquarters of some of its subsidiaries to the capital cities of some states in the Niger Delta.

He said cities such as Yenagoa in Bayelsa, Port Harcourt in Rivers, Uyo in Akwa Ibom, Asaba in Delta, among others, were ready to become hosts of such agencies and to ensure adequate security for them.

He said such move would improve the economy of the region, stimulate job opportunities, reduce insecurity and facilitate wealth redistribution agenda of President Tinubu.

Said he: “We recall that during the visit of Yemi Osibanjo in his capacity as an acting President, he promised that the Federal Government would compel oil multinationals to relocate their offices to the Niger Delta. However, throughout the tenure of that administration, the promise was not fulfilled.

“We know that a new sheriff is in town with a new and unique ways of doing things. The new government believes in decentralisation and even development. In the spirit of the ongoing decongestion of the capital territory, we appeal to the President to remember the Niger Delta by compelling NNPCL to move headquarters of their subsidiaries to the region.

“It will facilitate development of our region and give communities a sense of belonging. It will also stop incessant attacks on oil facilities by persons, who feel sidelined by the operations of oil companies in our region.”

He said the postponement followed the court order requesting the commission to adjust its original guideline and timetable published in the official gazette of Enugu State on September 26, 2023.

“The postponement was pursuant to a High Court Enugu State judgment delivered by Justice C. O. Ajah in the case of Action Alliance vs Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission.

“Enugu State Local Government Election 2024 originally scheduled for February 24 has been postponed till October 5, 2024,’’ he said.

Speaking to NAN on condition of anonymity, a senior official of the commission said the shifting of election date was in compliance with the High Court judgment, which says “we cannot hold election on that date.”

“The court said we are supposed to give a 360 days’ notice of which what we gave was 120 days’ notice. The judge said the judgment was based on the Electoral Act.

“The court said we must follow Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guideline; that we cannot use a different guideline other than that of INEC, even though we have been using the local government law. “

The official further said there may likely be an appeal but “that is not for us, it’s left to the state government to decide.”

    Akwa Ibom to commercialise aircraft

Akwa Ibom State Government has given indication that it will commercialise its aircraft, to reduce the cost of governance.

It said it could no longer bear the cost of maintaining the aircraft as a private jet due to the harsh economic realities.

This was part of the resolutions of the state Executive Council (Exco) meeting chaired by Governor Umo Eno.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Iniobong Ememobong and made available to reporters in Uyo yesterday, the government said it intended to put the aircraft to “more lucrative use.”

The statement said: “During deliberations and decisions, Council granted permission for the office of the Secretary to the State Government to undertake cost reduction management structure for the state official private jet.

“This decision is predicated on the need for a drastic reduction in the cost of governance, the volatile exchange rate and the corresponding increase in the cost of maintenance of the private jet. While the aircraft will remain the state’s asset, it will be put to more lucrative use.”

It revealed that the state has registered 671, 410 vulnerable people in its social register across the 31 local governments.

“On infrastructure, Exco ratified recommendations from the Finance and General Purposes Committee (FGPC) on the approval for release of funds for additional work at the airport and ongoing road contracts in the state,” the statement said.
