    • Fubara, council boss, others mourn

Five children were among victims of the boat accident, which occurred in Rivers State on Tuesday night.

The father of the children, Pastor Promise Festus, from Ngo Town in Andoni Local Government of Rivers State, lamented that his five children were among the victims of the boat accident, which happened along Andoni-Bonny waterways.

Festus, who said his world was finished, appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the chairman of his local government, Dr. Erastus Awortu, to assist him.

Explaining the accident in a viral video, Festus said: “I went to celebrate Christmas with my people. So, while returning home on January 8, I loaded people, who had no transport fare, with my family. Unfortunately our boat had an accident in front of the LNG, where there was no rescue. About 11 people died and among the deceased were my five children.”

Rivers State Government and Andoni Council have been thrown into mourning, following the death of about 20 people in the boat accident.

Although details of the accident were sketchy at press time, it was gathered that the accident involved two boats.

Most of the victims were said to be from Ngo town, Ataba and Isiama communities in Andoni Local Government.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed his deepest grief over the accident, describing it as unfortunate.

The governor, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Boniface Onyedi, sympathised with the bereaved families.

He said his administration would continue to work to ensure safer water transportation.

He said: “I commiserate and condole with families of the victims of the boat accident that led to loss of lives, and near death experienced by our brothers and sisters that were involved in the accident.

“It is indeed a very unfortunate and sad incident and we pray that God will give them the strength to bear the loss and speedy recovery to those who survived.

“As a government, we will continue to work to ensure such threats against safe travelling on our seas are tackled.“

The Chairman of Andoni Local Government, Dr. Awortu, confirmed the boat accident, saying over 20 persons were feared dead.

He said: “We received with rude shock and deep pain, a disturbing report that over 20 persons from Andoni are feared dead in a boat accident involving two Andoni/Bonny-bound boats, which occurred within the Andoni waterways on Tuesday.

“Upon receiving the sad development, we immediately dispatched our team to join the first responders on rescue mission on the scene of the accident in a bid to salvage the situation,”

Awortu said they were monitoring the situation to offer further support, “especially to give the survivors necessary medical attention and recover the remains of the dead from the sea.”

He said: “Our hearts go out to the families and communities of victims of this disaster, especially Ngo Town, Ataba, Isiama and other communities, whose loved ones were involved in the boat accident.

“We share in their pain and trauma, our prayers and thoughts are with them in this moment of grief. We will do whatever we can as a local government to reduce the burden of grief of the bereaved families and communities.

“While we bemoan the boat accident, which occurred at a time our people were still basking in the mood of a successful festive season in Andoni, we call on operators of water transportation in Andoni to ensure strict compliance by passengers to safety rules.

“We warn boat operators to desist from embarking on night journey.”

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has promised to complete the remaining section of the Etche-Igbodo road in Etche Local Government, following outcries by residents.

The governor was said to have driven on the entire stretch of the bad section to Okpala community of Imo State to assess the condition of the bad section and the level of work required to complete it. He said the past administration did a great job when it reconstructed Etche-Igbodo road and observed that the deplorable section was not completed then and had become a problem for residents and commuters.

  • Ijaw unfairly treated in Delta, IYC alleges

Ijaw unfairly treated in Delta, IYC alleges

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, has claimed that the Ijaw and their communities in Delta State are neglected and unfairly treated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in every facet of socio-economic and political developments since his assumption of office over seven months ago.

The IYC in a statement yesterday by its spokesman Amb. Binebai Yerin Princewill, after rising from the council’s meeting, demanded justice, equity and fairness in the distribution of infrastructures and political appointments, among others, in the state.

He said the Ijaw would rise against actions from the government if it continued to undermine the collective growth of the Ijaw, noting that as the economic and political base of the state, the Ijaw deserved fair treatment in terms of development and reasonable political appointments.

Princewill said the Ijaw could not solely be valued during elections and then neglected along with their communities afterward, warning that the inimical and tyrannical political thinking must stop, as the Ijaw could no longer put up with that kind of predatory political manipulation.  He claimed that they were beginning to see that the Oborevwori government was technically strangling and suffocating the Ijaw politically in the state.

He said Delta is a multi-ethnic state, and any action by the governor, as the father of the state, must consider the ethnic indices, adding that failure to do so won’t be acceptable to the affected ethnic groups, as they are equally stakeholders in the state, especially the Ijaw.

Princewill said despite lauding Governor Oborevwori for approving N78billion for road construction and three flyovers in Warri and its surroundings, they were disappointed that Ijaw riverine communities and kingdoms had not received substantial projects despite being the producers of the oil sustaining Delta State’s economy.

He said the delay in projects such as the Ayakoromo bridge was disheartening, noting that practical actions and completion were needed.

Princewill said: “The Ijaw observe with concern the appointment of two commissioners in Warri North, both from the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, despite Warri North being dominated by the Ijaw of Egbema Kingdom and Itsekiri. This lopsided appointment, despite the governor winning in all Ijaw local governments, is seen as an insult to the Ijaw people’s sensibilities.

“Equality in commissioner appointments is demanded; therefore, Burutu, Patani, Bomadi, and Warri South West local governments should each have two commissioners, mirroring the allocation in Warri North. No ethnic group should be treated as inferior in Delta State. Burutu, especially, already has one Federal Constituency and two House of Assembly seats. This should be looked into as soon as possible.

“Again, we bring to the attention of the governor that if we have Warri Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency and Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, the Ijaw call for the establishment of the Coastal Area Development Agency (CADA) as an executive Bill to benefit from resources generated from their areas. We refuse to continue to be marginalised.

“Before our very eyes, three universities were established in Delta State. No one was sited in Ijaw areas, while polytechnics were upgraded to universities under former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. Efforts to establish universities in Delta State without any in Ijaw areas have been noted. Temporary placement of faculties from these new universities in oil rich Ogulagha Kingdom is demanded as a form of temporary pacification until the future establishment of a university in Ogulagha Kingdom.

“The Delta State School of Marine Technology in Burutu requires urgent attention and declaration of a state of emergency for infrastructural development because of the deficit of neglect over the years to date.

“We are also informing the governor that we are aware that he is making plans to buy vehicles to ease transportation in urban areas. While the IYC is lauding the idea, we are also informing our governor that he should make arrangements to acquire ferry boats to ease transportation for our people living in the riverine communities, who majorly bear the brunt of this fuel hike. We will not accept anything other than this.”

The spokesman said having monitored the activities of the governor from May 29, 2023 to date, the Ijaw were yet to see any concrete achievement of the governor since he took over power, apart from his mere pronouncements, instead of physical manifestation of projects in all parts of the state.

  • ‘Why NDDC has over 900 abandoned projects in Rivers’

‘Why NDDC has over 900 abandoned projects in Rivers’

Rivers State representative on the board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Tony Okocha, has described incessant dissolution of NDDC board by the Federal Government as one of the factors affecting the development of Niger Delta.

Other factors, Okocha noted, included non-payment of contract sum to contractors and lack of refund of money spent by contractors, who went to site without mobilisation by the board.

He spoke yesterday when he led key officers of NDDC state office and some commission workers to visit members of the state Council of Traditional Rulers.

The visit also served as an interactive forum between the visitors and NDDC.

Addressing the council, he said the state ranks number two on the list of states that have the highest number of abandoned projects in the region, with 953 uncompleted.

Okocha said NDDC projects littered the state.

“One of the things that have bedevilled this developmental stride of government is the inconsistencies of government. Three months down the line, a board is set up, after another three months the same board is dissolved, and within the period they had existed, they would have awarded contracts to people, sometimes the work is done without mobilisation, people use their money to go to the field and don’t get their money paid. “Another aspect of this is that the new board that was constituted will now award their own contracts to also make their own name and probably get their own cuts. This has been our problem,” he added.

The Executive Director, Finance and Administration (EDFA), NDDC, Boma Iyaye, spoke on the need for traditional rulers to protect government pipelines in their domains from attacks by crude oil thieves.

He said improved production of crude oil by the Federal Government would guarantee increased resources to carry out more developmental projects across the region.

He said NDDC annual budget has hit over N300 billion under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, as against the usual N100 and something billion it had been in past administrations.

The Chairman of the council, Sergeant Awuse, said the visit was the first of its kind since the inception of NDDC and expressed gratitude to Okocha for the show of respect and recognition to members of the council.

He prayed God to help him succeed in office.

He said his administration would continue to partner them for the development of the state.

“The Navy is very key to us in Delta State, especially in our waterways.

“Since I came in about seven months ago, it has been wonderful in terms of waterways security. We have a very good naval team in Delta State.

“A lot has been going on and we are very happy with the operations of the Navy here in Delta State, unlike other states.

“You have improved a lot, but we still ask for more because security can never be hundred per cent,” he said.

Ogalla thanked Governor Oborevwori, the government and people of Delta for their support to the Navy.

He said the agency would continue to ensure security of the nation’s oil assets for optimum production.

The lawmaker representing Anambra South, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, has reacted to the suspension of the traditional ruler of Neni.

He said: “The entire game is all about politics. Soludo is frustrated by my rising popularity. I’m not the only person to receive a chieftaincy title. Former Chief of Army Staff Buratai was honoured within the same period; Vice-President Kashim Shettima was also honoured; Mr President was honoured in absentia. Why is my own different?”

Soludo sacks monarch for conferring chieftaincy title on Ubah

    • Another ruler apologises to governor for giving title without permission

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has suspended the traditional ruler of Neni, Igwe Damian Ezeani, in Anaocha Local Government, indefinitely.

The reason, The Nation gathered, was that Igwe Ezeani conferred chieftaincy title on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) to challenge his (Soludo’s) governorship in 2025.

The state government said through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Collins Nwabunwanne, the monarch did not get permission for doing such.

One of the leaders in Neni, who spoke with The Nation yesterday, but preferred anonymity, said Prof. Soludo’s annoyance was that the monarch conferred on Ubah a chieftaincy title (Odenjinji- meaning like tornado) .

Senator Ubah and Senator Uche Ekwunife have not hidden their interest in contesting the governorship election in 2025 on a joint ticket.

The arrangement has unsettled the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) team in the state, including the governor.

However, a statement by the government signed by Nwabunwanne, said the order as well as directives by lawful authorities could not be tolerated “in the new Anambra of today.”

“We have received confirmed reports that you, as traditional ruler of Neni, conferred such a phantom chieftaincy title today on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in violation of the Code of Conduct and without clearance from the ministry.

“Whether or not your action was for pecuniary reasons as being insinuated in many quarters, is irrelevant. What is important is that your action is an affront to order and good governance.

“In the light of the above, and for order and good governance, I am directed to inform you that Mr. Governor has in the exercise of his powers under Section 2 (C) of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers (Amendment) Law, 2020, suspended your recognition as Traditional Ruler of Neni until further notice.

“You are also by this letter, required to show cause why your Certificate of Recognition should not be withdrawn in line with the Traditional Rulers Law.

“In the meantime, you are advised in your own interest, to stop parading yourself forthwith, as the traditional ruler of Neni community.

“A vast majority of traditional rulers conduct their exalted office with dignity and integrity and stick to the Code of Conduct and directives of the ministry.

“However, a tiny few still act recklessly and in total disregard for the Code of Conduct of their office and directives of the supervising ministry,” the government said.

The embattled traditional ruler of Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government of Anambra State, Igwe Daniel Obelle, has apologised to Governor Soludo for flouting the code of conduct guiding the conferment of chieftaincy titles.

The monarch, on January 4, despite having court issue, conferred chieftaincy titles on over 40 persons ”in recognition of their commitments towards human capital development.”

The traditional ruler tendered the apology in a statement he signed and made available to reporters yesterday in Awka.

“My attention has been drawn to a statement by the Commissioner for Local Government & Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, alluding to some Ndi Igwe in Anambra State that recently conferred chieftaincy awards on certain personalities without clearance from the state government.

“I wish to state that as a newcomer to the royal throne of Nawfia Community, I was not aware of the existence of the circular in question. Besides, I am not a member of the State Traditional Rulers Council where the said circular was issued.

“In the peculiar circumstances, I declare my unalloyed loyalty to Governor Soludo and my unreserved apology for the omission of not obtaining his approval before conferring the chieftaincy awards on deserving citizens, who were thoroughly screened before the awards were bestowed on them.”
