2023: Desperate politicians sponsoring Kanu to scuttle Igbo presidency, group alleges

    By Okodili Ndidi, Abuja

A group of Igbo professionals under the aegis of Coalition of South East Professionals Network in Nigeria and Diaspora (CSEPNND), has alleged that ’desperate’ politicians are sponsoring the leader of the proscribed separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to scuttle the chances of the zone to produce the president in 2023.

Condemning the activities of IPOB and its leader, the Igbo professionals, urged the Southeast governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and we’ll meaning Igbo sons and daughters to rise against the proscribed group by denouncing it publicly.

It insisted that “the region must be vigilant and not succumb to Kanu’s antics of speaking or carrying out his actions for the South East interest.”

In a statement, signed by its National President, Prof. Madumere Chika, and National Secretary, Mazi Anayo Uchemba, Friday, the group alleged that a certain Nigerian politician from the South is bankrolling Kanu to scuttle Igbo’s quest for presidency in 2023.

It claimed that it has been vindicated of its earlier position that certain forces were behind the IPOB leader and his inglorious activities following current happenings around him.

“We wish to authoritatively say that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not working for the interest of Ndigbo, rather he is being bankrolled by  a certain Nigerian politician who is contesting the 2023 presidential elections from the South against the Igbos,” it alleged.

“We are vindicated by the findings and happenings around  Mazi  Nnamdi Kanu, the fugitive leader of IPOB, and we call on all Ndigbo around the world to distance themselves from this Kanu and his terrorist group,” it added.

IPOB rejects governors’ security outfit in Southeast

By Sunny Nwankwo, Umuahia and Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

The outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday rejected a bid by Southeast governors to set up a new security outfit.

IPOB, which claimed to have set up the Eastern Security Network (ESN), said no other vigilante group would be allowed in the region.

The group, in a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, claimed without evidence that the proposed outfit was being set up to counter the ESN.

It urged Chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum and Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi to shelve the idea of another security outfit.

IPOB alleged that the motive for the proposed outfit was anti-Igbo.

But the group did provide any evidence as to how the outfit would undermine the ESN.

The statement reads in part: “We know that they intend to counter the formidable ESN, which is protecting and defending Biafrans against terrorists and invaders responsible for the senseless attacks, raping and wanton killings of our mothers, wives and sisters in our farmlands and forests.

“We warn these governors in our region not to heed the mischievous advice and attempt to compromise the security of Biafrans.

“Any group under any nomenclature formed by Dave Umahi and his fellow governors as well as Ohanaeze will be resisted by the people of Old Eastern Region.

“We, therefore, advise every Biafran father and mother to caution their children against joining Umahi’s vigilante group as such an outfit is already the enemy of the people. Their agenda is sinister and anti-Biafra.

“Remember that the real masterminds of the plot…are now set to control Biafraland but ESN and IPOB have remained their only nightmare.

“We are happy to aver that the grand conspiracy by our oppressors to take over the South with the help of compromised leaders is dead on arrival!

“We declare without equivocation that any other group parading as Southeast and Southsouth security outfit will not be allowed to operate on Biafra soil.

“Our people have already launched their defence line – ESN – as our self-acclaimed leaders were nowhere to be found when it counted most.

“Anyone who enlists in any treacherous security outfit sponsored to destabilise our territory will regret such a decision.

“Our message is simply this: IPOB will not allow terrorists any breeding ground on Biafra forests and farmlands.

“The raping, killings and unprovoked attacks by these vampires must stop throughout Biafra territory.

“Anyone against this irreversible resolve of the people to defend themselves against foreign occupation will be crushed!

“ESN has been launched with the mandate of securing Biafraland, and no force can disband this great movement until it’s done with its mandate!”

Itsekiri youths protest ceding of chairmanship to Ijaw

    By Okungbowa Aiwerie, Asaba

Protesting Itsekiri youths on Tuesday marched on the Delta State Government House in Asaba, the state capital, to protest the alleged ceding of Warri North chairmanship seat to Ijaw.

They said Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Warri North were masterminding political tension in the area. They urged party leaders to avert impending crisis by reversing the decision.

The protesters vowed to use legal means to stop the ceding of Warri North chairmanship to Egbema Ijaw, insisting that all interested aspirants should be allowed to purchase forms and be screened.

They carried placards with inscriptions like “”We will never recognise any ceding of Warri North chairmanship to Ijaw”; “Warri North, stop the trading of Itsekiri”; “Itsekiri leaders, the youths can’t breathe”.

Mone Oris, who spoke for the protesters, said instead of the PDP Electoral College with 25 persons, which should select candidates through primaries, only ‘two people masterminded the process from their homes and choose a candidate without consulting others in the council’.

He called for a PDP primary to be conducted by the 25 stakeholders to select the right candidate and allow a level playing field for all to participate.

President of Movement for the Protection of Iwere Homeland, Development and History (MPIHDH) James Aderojor stressed that Warri North chairmanship can’t be ceded to non-Itsekiri. He added that if the decision is not reversed, political peace will not be enjoyed in the area.

Aderojor cautioned those allegedly behind the decision to desist from such ‘failed political calculation’, saying ‘Ogheye Ward alone is more than the four Egbema Ijaw Wards in the local government area’.

Okowa’s Senior Political Adviser Funkekeme Solomon, who addressed the protesters, described the governor as a man of peace ‘who believes in fairness and equity across’.

He praised the youths for their peaceful disposition while assuring that their protest will reach the governor.

Wike: I won’t leave uncompleted projects for my successor

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has promised to complete all projects initiated by his administration before the end of his tenure.

Wike spoke on Tuesday when he led a former Secretary to the Federal Government, Anyim Pius Anyim, to inaugurate the Rumuekini/Aluu Road, traversing Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre Local Government Areas.

A statement by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, said Wike’s successor would initiate his own projects, instead of being burdened by uncompleted projects.

The statement reads: “There is nothing that will be given to you that will be too much. Nobody that will succeed me will complete any of my projects because I will complete all my projects before I go. I won’t leave any project burden for my successor. When the new person comes, let him initiate his own projects.

“Before now, APC said we are building roads only in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor council. Now, they can’t talk again. We have inaugurated projects in Khana, Gokana, Eleme. We were also at Akuku-Toru and Emohua. We are a government for every Rivers person and every local government.”

Anyim said he was delighted to associate with Wike because he has shown, through his projects, that he is truly bonded with Rivers people and know their needs.

He said: “Governor Wike, because you commission projects, it is certain no project will be abandoned. I am proud to identify with the progress that you have made.

“I am proud to belong to the PDP family. It is the spirit of PDP that is at work in your government and that spirit of PDP will come to work in Nigeria…”

Rivers community protest arrest of chiefs

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

Indigenes of Rumuolumeni Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have protested against the Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder for arresting and detaining their chiefs.

Youths from the community blocked all roads in the area asking the Navy to release their community leaders.

The Navy was said to have invited the Community Development Committee Chairman, Ikechi Williams, Youth President, Chairman of Employment Bureau (REB) Noble Orluegele, and other leaders, for a meeting but detained them.

One of the youth leaders, Felix Chinda, said the protest was against the Navy for unlawfully detaining their leaders.

Chinda said the Navy, for over eight years, harboured a marine company within its premises and shielded the community from making contact with the firm.

He said: “The protest is against the inhuman treatment against us by the Navy. Rumuolumeni has been a peaceful community and we host many companies and institutions. Since Navy came, we have never had it easy with them. They never support us during crisis.

“They will only come when they want to oppress us. Navy has hosted Ocean Marine Solutions in their premises for over eight years. We have written many letters but they have refused to listen to us.”

Vice Chairman of REB Emmanuel Ikenga said the Navy had shown disrespect for the host community.

Ikenga said: “Our CDC and REB chairmen have been held hostage by the NNS Pathfinder. When the youths heard of it, we came out to block the road. The protest will continue until they release our people. Our demand is that the company should come out clear and employ us.”

Henry Amaewhule, Secretary of CDC Rumuolumeni, threatened that the youths would remain on the road until their leaders were released and the marine company come to a roundtable with the community.

A Senior Naval Officer, who spoke in confidence, said the Navy was looking into the issues and would soon resolve them.

He said the Navy would make its position known in an official statement.

APC vows to win Anambra in 2021 governorship

By Nwanosike Onu, Awka and Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has vowed to take over the state’s leadership from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the November governorship election.

Caretaker Chairman Basil Ejidike, at the weekend in Awka, said the APC was tired of playing second fiddle. He spoke at a meeting of party stakeholders with governorship aspirants.

George Moghalu was absent at the meeting.

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige expressed worries over ‘deficiencies in the party’s reward system’.

He, however, assured party members of improvement, pleading that they exercise more patience as President Muhammadu Buhari had other goodies for them

Ngige said: “Since I joined politics, current members of the State Working Committee (SWC) are one of the best, in terms of educational qualification, but their output is not commensurate with your experience. As leaders, you must see yourselves as workers and should not be partisan.

“You’ve not done enough to cement the party, hence the fracture lines. It’s not their fault to an extent. Our reward system is not commensurate to other parties, especially when the PDP is ruling…”

Senator Andy Uba described the ongoing   registration as very important to APC, adding that another key factor was complete reconciliation to enable the party win.

“Nobody should see himself or herself as unequal. We can’t afford to allow governance fall into the hands of our enemies again,” Uba said.

Tony Nwoye, who lamented the party’s abysmal performance in past elections, said: “We must tell ourselves the truth; we didn’t perform well in 2019, we couldn’t win any seat in the house. I don’t want to talk about 2017.

“Let’s leave acrimony and pursue unity and oneness. We need people and there’s need to review our process.”

He urged leaders to sit up, and Ngige to take the party’s message to President Buhari to make the house fertile.

    Agency Reporter

Former House of Representatives member from Ebonyi State Lazarus Ogbee has debunked reports of rift with Governor David Umahi over the governor’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ogbee  represented Ikwo/Ezza South from June 2015 to November 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ogbee refuted the report at Isu, Onicha Local Government Area, during the distribution of empowerment items to indigents by the Ebele and Anyi Chuks Foundation.

The former lawmaker said Umahi remained his political father.

He said: “Umahi has defected to the APC but he is still my political father and I, his son. We know where we have reached and cannot cross the bridge, but my relationship with him is presently personal.”

Ogbee said he did not defect with Umahi to the APC because of his principles. “I cannot join the APC because I was robbed of my victory at the court. I knew I won that election clearly, was duly sworn-in and that was my second time at the House of Representatives.

“I am coming again, maybe not for the House of Representatives, but in another position and definitely, cannot easily be short-changed.”
