THE Ojuaga I of Egbema Clan, Ovia Southwest Local Government Area of Edo State, Henry Binidodogha, has has called on people to shun violence and live in peace.

He spoke on Sunday in his palace while reacting to plans by some people from Delta State to instigate violence against him.

The monarch noted that his ascendancy to the throne since March 25, 2018, was endorsed by the elders, chiefs and leaders of the seven major Egbema communities in Ovia Southwest, particularly Ofunama, Jamagie 1 and 2, Ugbolukanga, Abere, Gbeoba and Ajakurama.

He said he was only waiting for Oba Ewuare’s blessings.

According to Binidodogha, his insistence on peaceful co-existence did not go well with some elements who continually try to blackmail him, and instigate violence and mayhem in Edo State.

Some chiefs from Egbema clan, led by Chief Thomas Abel from Ofunama, said the people were desirous of development, ‘which could only be achieved in a peaceful atmosphere’.

Abel said: “We are peaceful people. Security agencies should get to the root of the evil plot emanating from Delta State to cause mayhem in Edo State.

“The agents of violence should be dealt with according to the law.”

OWNERS of luxury buses at the weekend protested alleged harassment, robbery and extortion by suspected produce toll collectors on the highways, especially Benue and Ebonyi State roads.

The protesters, under the auspices of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), gave the Federal and state governments 14 days to dismantle all road blocks mounted by produce toll collectors.

Chairman of ALBON Taskforce Uchenna Maduakor addressed reporters in Onitsha, Anambra State. He was supported by Chukwuma Nwolisa (Osinachi Motors) and Afamefuna Aboaja (Ifeanyoluchukwu Motors). They threatened to use their buses to block highways on expiration of the ultimatum.

Maduakor alleged that some of their drivers and passengers were beaten and their vehicles robbed in isolated areas. They also experienced delayed journeys due to road blocks by soldiers, police and produce toll collectors.

He said: “A journey of four hours will take eight hours. The problem is not even the money they collect, but the delay and sometimes the beating of our drivers for no just cause.

“We no longer talk of robbers but produce toll collectors who  attack us on the highway. They rob us and our passengers in the day. Besides, we pay revenue at the park where we load as luxury bus, not lorry buses, but they will insist we pay them on the road and, when we pay say N2,000, they will beat the driver or smash the vehicle, claiming the amount is too small.”

APC has failed to keep promises, says Wike

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to keep promises it made to the country.

Wike insisted that unlike the APC, the PDP had the best interests of the people at heart with its commitment to fulfill all promises.

The governor in a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, spoke when he led the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tanbuwal to commission the dualised Forces Avenue, Olumeni and Harvey Streets in Old Government Residential Area, Port Harcourt.

He said the administration of his predecessor under the APC deliberately ignored the roads in the Old GRA of Port Harcourt, leaving the area in blighted condition.

Wike stated that his conviction in developing the city and building it into a world class status stemmed from the fact that it remained the first point of contact to every visitor.

He revealed that former Rivers State Governor,  Celestine Omehia before leaving office in October 2007 awarded contract for the dualisation of Forces Avenue , but his successor, Governor Chibuike Amaechi, for inexplicable reasons stopped the contractor from executing the project.

He said: “Celestine Omehia was the one who awarded the dualisation of this project, not to Julius Berger, but to another contractor. But, his first cousin (Amaechi) said the job should not go on. But I thank God today that Celestine Omehia is witnessing that his dream has come through to the glory of God.”

Inaugurating the road projects, Tambuwal, said that the performance of Wike justified the confidence reposed in him by Rivers people, who reelected him to serve them for a second term.

Tambuwal, who affirmed that PDP governors were doing well in their respective states, described Wike, as a bridge builder, and a special gift to the country.

“Those following you and those following development in Rivers, and democratic development in Nigeria, know your place in this state, and at the national scene in delivering your mandate, and your efforts at building bridges across Nigeria.  You’re indeed a special gift to the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.”

In his remarks, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, said since the roads were first built by the colonial masters, no government had given them serious attention until Wike’s intervention.

“You are one of the shining light of our party because your good works speaks for itself. I don’t think another governor or governors of the other party can really compete with the governors of PDP.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi said the roads were previously between 6.5 meters and 7 metres without drains, and streetlights.

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Vigilance operatives from Amanator Okporo Community in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, have foiled an attempt by gunmen to abduct an Italy-based businessman, Prince Valentino Ibenye-Ugbala, inside St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Okporo.

Hoodlums, in another attack, unleashed terror on the interim management chairman of Njaba LGA, Emeka Iheanacho, leaving him hospitalized.

The Nation gathered that the Okporo kidnap incident which occurred around 11.30 am inside the church on Sunday January 3, caused tension in the area as the gunmen dispossessed Valentino of cash and other valuables.

The hoodlums shot sporadically forcing shop owners in front of the church and nearby Orie Okporo market as well as motorists to scamper to safety for fear of being hit by stray bullets.

A village source told The Nation that the vigilance men, who were alerted by strange movements in front of the church, blocked all suspected exit routes in the community but the gunmen escaped towards Akata Road.

Narrating his ordeal, Valentino, who hails from Amanator Okporo, in Orlu L.G.A,  said: “As I drove inside the church premises with my sister’s daughter in search of a parking space, I noticed some boys on a motorcycle entered the car park. Suddenly four other motorcycles also came into the car park, instead of the place made for motorcycles to park. All the motorcycles had no plate/ identification numbers. One of them jumped down and pointed a gun at me and ordered me to quietly follow them or they would shoot at me. It was then I realized that they were kidnappers.

“I tried to attract attention but no one came. When  I refused to follow them, they  pounced on me, tore my clothes,  heat the butt of their guns on my head repeatedly, collected my two phones, wrist watch, neckless, and cash of N1.150m and eight hundred and fifty dollars ($850).

“I managed to run into the church auditorium and they  followed me inside the church for more than one hour. When the church called the police, they all ran away before their (police) arrival leaving one of their motorcycles behind.”

He said it was the Amanator vigilance group and a special squad from the police, and DCP, Benneth Igwe from Akatta who sent his boys to rescue  and take  him  to  the hospital where he was still to receiving treatment.

The Interim Chairman of Njaba LGA, Emeka Iheanacho, was also attacked in the same Okporo Community where he had gone to be with a friend.

The Nation learned that the hoodlums who attacked him were operating on motorcycles.

They were said to have double-crossed his vehicle and ordered him out of his car, snatching his phones, cash, watch and other valuables in his car, while beating the chairman to stupor.

Spokesman of the state police command, Orlando Ikeokwu was not available for comments, but a senior police officer, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incidents.
