    ‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s election will hold’

    By Chris Oji Enugu

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said nothing will stop its election for a new executive in January 2021.

A statement debunking a viral letter from Miyetti Allah, allegedly addressed to the President-General, Chief Nnia Nwodo, regarding the choice of his successor, described the letter as an insult.

A statement by Nwodo’s media aide, Emeka Attamah, reads: “The spurious letter purportedly written by the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, congratulated Nwodo for his able leadership and enjoined him to ensure Prof. George Obiozor succeeds him.

“They claimed that discussions with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma showed that Obiozor would protect their interest, and to recompense Nwodo, they have forwarded his name to the presidency for appointment. What insult! What impudence!

“The home address written on the letter does not reflect Nwodo’s address. The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is not for sale and nobody can manipulate the choice of Ndigbo and the election.

“Chief Nwodo has never, and will never, attend any meeting where the people of Imo State will determine who represents them. Ohanaeze will conduct election for all who indicate interest and purchase the form.

“Chief Nwodo has a pedigree he is proud of and is desirous of protecting. He has made a name for himself through hard work, social interactions and unequalled intellectual and transparent service and leadership. It is therefore preposterous for anybody to imagine, believe or imply that Nwodo requires recommendation to be considered for an appointment in Nigeria. That alone should bring out the absurdity, incongruity and imbecility of the badly conceived and baseless letter.

“The public should discountenance the letter and see it as the pitiable handiwork of unsuccessful detractors.”

During a chat with reporters, Okewulonu said the people of Okigwe have fully accepted him with their support at rallies.

He said: “I am confident of winning the December 5 by-election. I was assured of victory before I joined the race because I consulted my God, and He gave me a positive response.

“I’ve reached out to every ward, stakeholder, community and traditional leaders in Okigwe. I am also amazed at the overwhelming support I have from the people, they have shown me love and support in my ambition, and I am convinced that I am accepted here.”

Okewulonu called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a credible poll. “INEC should ensure this election is void of electoral malpractices. The people should be allowed to decide what they want.” he added.

  • Why we are on strike, by Imo doctors

Why we are on strike, by Imo doctors

    From Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Doctors in Imo State have said the government’s insincerity about their welfare led to their indefinite strike.

The Nigerian Medial Association (NMA), on November 24, embarked on indefinite strike to press home its demands.

NMA Chairman Dr. Chidiebere Okwara, at a news conference yesterday, accused the state of being insensitive to the plights of doctors and health workers.

He said all state-owned health facilities would be shut if the government did not meet their demands by December 9. Okwara added that if the strike prolonged, private health facilities would also join.

The doctors’ demands include ‘immediate payment of outstanding arrears from March 2020 till date to doctors at the state Teaching Hospital, Orlu, and other health facilities.

‘Regularisation of salaries in the state Specialist Hospital, Ministry of Health, Local Government Areas and payments to correct the shortfalls pending the start of the 2014 Consolidated Medical Salaries structure.

‘Circularisation of the policy statement made by the governor, more specifically, the circularisation of the start of CONMESS 2014, to take effect from January 2021’.

Okwara said: “NMA will continue to interface with the government to monitor progress made towards restoring the accreditation of three colleges of medicine, Imo State University, and some faculties in the teaching hospital. This includes closing the infrastructural and manpower gaps.

“If the measures are not satisfactorily met, the NMA may begin the proposed strike. Regrettably, none of these had been done despite the expiration of the two weeks extension.”

  • Ijaw youths seek sack of NDDC interim committee

Ijaw youths seek sack of NDDC interim committee

    From Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

IYC said the IMC had outlived its usefulness and should not be allowed to remain in office.

A statement yesterday in Port Harcourt by its President, Peter Igbifa, said the Prof. Keme Pondei-led committee had been lacklustre and uninspiring since its appointment on October 30, 2019.

Igbifa said the IYC and other stakeholders in the Niger Delta were earlier against appointing an interim committee for the NDDC because they believed some powerful forces would not allow it discharge its responsibilities.

According to him, even persons who earlier supported the idea had seen a disconnect between the committee and the people.

Igbifa said: “The IYC Worldwide believes that the IMC has outlived its usefulness and does not have anything new to add to the development of the Niger Delta. Its lacklustre and uninspiring performance is glaring.

“When President Muhammadu Buhari appointed the committee on October 30, 2019, many persons were displeased with the idea, knowing it will be hamstrung by powers that be.

“Today, even the doubting Thomases will agree that there is a huge disconnect between the people, their development needs and what the IMC is doing.

“…There is no audit going on in the NDDC. Even if there is, that does not stop the president from inaugurating a substantive board.

“The essence of the commission is to develop and empower the people, but it is becoming a mirage and the people are living in hopelessness, want, squalor and misery.

“The council is no longer comfortable with the IMC and demands the inauguration of a substantive board. Failure to do that will leave the council with no other option but to occupy the NDDC. Inaugurating a substantive Board would not stop the forensic auditors or consultants from doing their job.”

  • Sacked Imo council chairmen to petition NJC

Sacked Imo council chairmen to petition NJC

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Sacked local government chairmen in Imo State have vowed to petition the National Judicial Council (NJC) against their removal.

Justice E.F. Njemanze, on November 27 declared the August 25, 2018 election which produced the 27 chairmen as null, void and of no effect.

Njemanze also ordered the former chairmen to return all salaries and allowances paid them to the state.

But Chairman of Isiala Mbano council, Jude Mbachu, who spoke for his colleagues, faulted the judgment and accused the judge of bias.

According to Mbachu, the council officials would petition the NJC and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) against the judgment because ‘we are of the view that the judgment was given out of hate’.

He said: “The judge used our matter to settle the scores his family has with former Governor Rochas Okorocha, over the dismantling of Njemanze Dynasty. We wrote a petition asking him to recuse himself because we didn’t have confidence in him.

“You cannot have an election matter for over two years and do nothing about it. He knew about the petition but he continued the matter still. Instead, he came to court to ask who Barr. Mbagwu is. It was Mbagwu who signed the petition then.”

Mbachu added that they have gone to the Court of Appeal to challenge the judgment

“The judgment can’t stand because the Supreme Court had decided the matter on the 2018 Imo council election in 2019. The matter was between Dr. Martins Nwoga and the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC); Attorney-General of Imo State, Governor of Imo State and Adauctus Onuoha

“The courts, including the Supreme Court, still upheld the election as duly conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act. We’re not even talking about the affirmation of our election by the Federal High Court where Justice Tijjani Ringim said we were validly elected.

“This matter has been in court since 2018. Why is it now that we gave notice for resumption of office that the judge gave judgment? We’re already going to the Court of Appeal to vacate that judgment because it will not stand”, he added.

    Lawmaker, constituents fight over leadership

    By Nwanosike Onu, Awka

Residents of Ndiowu, Orumba North I Local Government Area of Anambra State are at logger heads with their representative in the House of Assembly, Emeka Aforka.

The people marched on the Government House and House of Assembly. They carried placards with inscriptions like “Enough is Enough, Ndiowu does not need caretaker committee again”; “Give us account of N20 million from government”; “Governor Willie Obiano please save us from tyrants”. They described Aforka as fraudulent

Youth leader Obiora Mgbemene said some cabals, like the lawmaker, were holding Ndiowu to ransom.

The people insisted that all forms of imposition of candidates during elections must stop. They alleged that the self-styled cabals were threatening the community’s peace and security.

They appealed to the government to acknowledge the town union executives elected on December 26, 2019.

Woman leader Mrs. Obiageli Nwafor said the Oye-Ibagu market they contributed money to build was being claimed by the caretaker committee as built with the N20 million ‘Choose your Project’ from the government.

But Aforka described the protesters as miscreants. He said there must be election, and According to him, only one man was responsible for the crisis in Ndiowu. The man, he said, sued the community and state to court. The matter was still pending.

Aforka said the purported election they referred to in 2019 was cancelled to forestall anarchy, adding that the present caretaker committee had tried to restore peace unsuccessfully.

He described the protest as efforts in futility, saying most of the protesters came to Awka under duress. According to him, they were the people imposing themselves on the community.

Secretary to the State government Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu hailed the protesters for not taking laws into their hands. He said the government would address their grievances.

Disengaged NPA workers demand severance package

    By Elo Edremoda, Warri

Disengaged workers of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) in Warri, Delta State, have called on the Minister for Transport Rotimi Amaechi and NPA Managing Director Hadiza Bala Usman, to pay their delayed severance package.

The workers, under the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), protested at the entrance of the New NPA in Warri. They threatened to ground activities at the ports if their call is not heeded.

They carried placards with inscriptions like “Warri Port please pay us our severance package, other ports have received theirs since January”; “NPA, why have you not paid our severance package?”.

The protesters, which comprised tally clerks and onboard security operatives, were disengaged in 2015 after a verification exercise. But while their colleagues in other ports had been paid, those in Warri have yet to receive theirs.

Their spokesman Francis Agbudumhe lamented that their unpaid benefits was having a bad effect on members, some of whom are now sick or dead.

He said: “We have lost a lot of our members, some of them are bedridden; many of us have no homes, our children can no longer go to school, money lenders are chasing us here and there.

“We are heavily indebted. Even the money we are expected to get can’t solve any problem after this delay. But we need that money it’s our right.”

Agbudumhe stressed the need for relevant authorities to act before the committee set up to carry out the payment is dissolved.

“This is not a strike, it’s a peaceful protest so that we will get our money to settle our family needs this December. We will not stop until we get that money this December. It will not go beyond December. We will stay put here until we get answers.

“This is NPA facility, they can hear us, they can see us. We are asking NPA to do the needful and give that money out to the committee set up to do the payment.

“Before you know it, that committee will be dissolved because the year is ending and once that committee is dissolved, they will not come together until next year, and we don’t want to lose anybody again.

“We will remain here until they listen to us. If they refuse to listen, operations of the port will be shut down.”
