Court orders arrest of Naval commander in Rivers

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has issued a bench warrant on Commander of the Nigerian Navy Pathfinder, Rumuolumeni, Com. Sam Bora.

The court accused Bora of failing to appear before it and refusing to release an arrested suspect.

Justice Hilary Oshoma also ordered that the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Adamu, and his men, arrest and bring Bora to the court on December 3 to show cause why he should not be disciplined.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Christian Woke, said Naval officers arrested his client, Ledumbari Nafiri, on August 2.

Woke added that the Navy also denied his client access to his lawyer and defied a valid court order to release him.

He said: “My client was arrested in a commando style when the Naval officers invaded his house, took away his properties and held him incommunicado.

“When the court finally ordered that Nafiri be released, the order was served on Sam Bora, the Commanding Officer of Navy Pathfinder, Rumuolumini, Port Harcourt. But he refused to obey the order and instead transferred Nafiri to Abuja. The same order was served on the Abuja Naval office and they still refused to release him.”

Woke hailed the court’s decision, explaining that the warrant was issued against the senior Naval officer because he failed to honour the court’s summons thrice.

Though the Navy had yet to make official statement on the warrant, a senior officer said they were in shock.

Ghost workers uncovered in Imo councils

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

About 300 ghost workers have been uncovered in the 27 local government areas of Imo State, Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Service Commission, Mrs. Rosemary Izuogu, said yesterday.

Izuogu said this accounts for why over 100 workers have refused to leave their departments after five years, as directed by the House of Assembly.

The permanent secretary said she was recalled from retirement to sanitise the local government system, adding that most of the workers falsified their documents to get promotion.

“The system is so messed up that some workers have resulted to using diabolical means to remain in one council for many years,” she added.

Though her postings followed a directive of Governor Hope Uzodimma that the commission be reshuffled in line with set out guidelines for effective sanitisation, Izuogu has also been accused of indiscriminate postings.

Some workers said her postings left some councils with grade level 8 officers to become department heads while some with higher grades were muddled up to fight over leadership.

But Izuogu said those behind the allegation are the same people who had overstayed in their councils.

She said: “They are only trying to tarnish my integrity. Everybody knows I’m God fearing and would never do such. It was even a difficult task finding where to fix over 1,200 workers who have been in one place for long. We have even discovered most of the names here do not exist, some of them are long dead.”

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has said killers of his police orderly would not go unpunished.

He reiterated that efforts would be made to ensure the culprits are arrested and prosecuted.

The security detail was killed on November 19 when Dickson’s Toru Orua country home was attacked.

Dickson spoke yesterday when he visited the house with party leaders, government officials and supporters from Bayelsa West. He was visiting the house for the first time since the attack.

The former governor repeated his call on Bayelsans and the Ijaw nation to volunteer necessary information that could lead to the culprits’ arrest. He lamented that the hoodlums took away the officer’s weapon, and called on security agencies to ensure a speedy investigation of the attack.

Dickson, who condoled with the bereaved family, said he was in touch with them.

He said: “We call for calm. There should be no hasty conclusion, and there should be no reprisals.

“We promise the deceased will have justice served. Whoever was part this dastardly act, whoever committed this cowardly and criminal act, whoever conspired, procured, guided or supported and encouraged by whatever means whatsoever will be arrested and justice will be served.”

The lawmaker representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, also condemned the attack.

Explosion rocks oil facilities in Bayelsa

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Unidentified persons have attacked oil facilities operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) at Ikarama, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

A youth leader, Ben Warder, said yesterday that residents heard several sounds from the oil fields on Monday but were too scared to approach the area.

He said: “The site is not far from Ikarama. Sounds coming from the oil fields were like dynamites and it was not safe to go near. So when the situation became quiet, we traced what happened and it turned out that Shell’s gas pipeline and Agip’s crude lines were destroyed.

“The incident resulted in air pollution and crude leak which residents of the affected communities are battling with.”

SPDC spokesperson Michael Adande said the firm received reports of the incident and shut the facility to curtail further impact.

“We have reports of interference on our pipeline about one kilometre from Ikarama community in Yenagoa. We immediately shut the line and informed relevant regulatory government agencies and stakeholders. A government-led joint investigation team will determine the cause of the interference.”
