    #EndSARS: Ugwuanyi, Okowa empanel bodies on extra-judicial killings

    Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Saturday, for the second time in two days, addressed some youths in the state who were protesting against #PoliceBrutality in the country, announcing the setting up of a Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra judicial killings, as demanded by the protesters.

    Ugwuanyi who addressed the #EndSARS protesters amid cheers, reiterated his endorsement to the state government’s position on the demands made by the protesting youth, disclosed that the panel will be chaired by a High Court Judge with two representatives of the Civil Society Groups and one retired Police Officer of high repute as members.

    Other members of the panel, according to Governor Ugwuanyi, include one youth representative, one student representative, a representative of the State Attorney General and another from the Human Rights Commission.

    The governor who applauded the protesters, led by two prominent artists, Flavor and Phyno, for the peaceful nature of the protest expressed the solidarity of the government and people of the state to their cause.

    “We have also resolved that we will set up complaints commission which the public can relate by telephone or social media channels,” the governor said.

    In a related development, the Delta State Government has constituted an eight-member judicial panel of enquiry to investigate allegations of police brutality and extra-judicial killings in the state.

    A statement signed by Secretary to State Government, Mr Chiedu Ebie, in Asaba, said that the panel would receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extrajudicial killings in the state from victims of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) or any other police unit, with a view to ascertaining their validity.

    According to the statement, the panel has Justice Celestina Ogisi (retd) as Chairman and Mr Omamuzo Erebe as Secretary.

    Other members of the panel are AIG David Igbodo (retd), Mr Harrison Gwamnishu representing the youths, Godwin Oyovweadjebore representing students, Mr Freedom Atsepoyi and Ambassador Eris Jewo–Ibi representing the civil society groups and Mr Nicholas Osadolor representing the Human Rights Commission.

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State has arrested 44 suspected illicit drugs dealers in the state.

    The Commander of the Agency, Mohammed Idris who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen, said four of the suspects were females.

    He said 19 of them were found guilty after investigations and would be prosecuted, adding that the rest were referred to rehabilitation center for counseling.

    He said, “The agency confiscated about two tonnes of illicit drugs, consisting of 1720kg of canabis sativa, 0.210 crystalline methamphetamine, 5,000 tablets of tramadol, about 10,481 tablets of Diazepam, 2.1 liters of cough syrup with codine, among others.”

    Regretting the challenges the agency had in arraigning suspects occasioned by Covid-19 pandemic, Idris disclosed that the agency secured 11 convictions from the previous arrest.

    “The operations of the agency were restricted to specialised operations by the Covid-19 pandemic during the period under review,” he added.

    Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has ordered his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, commissioners and all members of the State Executive Council to cultivate their own farms as a practical demonstration of the government’s resolve to encourage agriculture among the people.

    Diri said though the state had received about N8bn and five tractors to support the state in its drive for food sufficiency, the decision to direct members of the state executive council to own their farms was a deliberate state policy to achieve food self-sustainability in the state.

    Diri, who gave the directive during the occasion to mark this year’s World Food Day and commencement of the 2020 farming season, said his administration prosperity agenda would be driven by four cardinal points of agriculture, entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, and youths empowerment.

    Diri, represented by his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo said: “The Diri Boost programme has commenced. As you are aware, we have a lot of farms being established and clearing is ongoing in several communities for the purpose of ensuring that we have food sufficiency.”

    In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, David Alagoa, said this year’s theme: ‘Grow, Nourish,  Sustain, Together,’ further encouraged all to engender the economy and put best efforts to sustain improved livelihood through agriculture.

    Also speaking, the Chairman of the State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Tonye Isenah, noted that the resolve of the Assembly members was to partner with the executive arm of government to ensure agriculture is given priority attention through proper budgeting.

    The leadership of the Nigerian Army has distributed food palliatives to four communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

    The exercise which was supervised by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai also saw over 500 persons with different health challenges undergoing free medical checks within the two days the free medical outreach lasted.

    Buratai who was represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Enugu; Major-General Lasisi Adegboye, lauded the Brigade Commander, 14Brigade, Ohafia,  Brigadier-General Solomon Kumapayi and his men for their professionalism and gallantry.

    According to Lasisi, Buratai would have personally loved to handover the items because of the importance he attached to the event, but however regretted that exigency of duties couldn’t allow him to be at the event.

    Lasisi who recalled the incident that led to death of a soldier and carting away of rifles of the two soldiers that were attacked by yet-to-be-known gunmen in the Owaza community on September 20, feared that the continued disappearance of the weapons put the lives of everybody in the community at risk, as those who are in possession of the guns can unleash mayhem on members of the community and the general public as long as the weapon is still in the wrong hands.

    Speaking at the event, members representing the people of Ukwa East West Federal Representative, Hon. Uzoma Abonta and his counterpart at  Ukwa West State Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Godwin Adiele, lawmaker representing thanked the Chief of Army Staff and the leadership of 82 Division for the palliative and medical outreach to the people of the area.

    The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, Uvwie local government area of Delta State, Prof. (Chief) Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, has assured Jatropha Growers, Processors and Exporters Association of Nigeria (JAGPEAN), of its partnership and supports through research to achieve the biogas production.

    Rim-Rukeh who is also the Southsouth Vice Chairman of the group, gave the assurance at his office when the group led by its National  Chairman, Maj. Gen. J.A Omosebi (Retrd.), National Secretary, Hon. Chief Lawrence Madaki and the Chairman, Delta State Chapter of the group, Mr. Roman Otite and other members paid him a courtesy visit.

    In his welcome remarks, Prof. Rim-Rukeh emphasised on the importance of Jathropha plant, pointing out that the Jatropha seed is not only medicinal but also, contributes about 40% of oil reserve.

    He revealed that since the issues of climate change as a result of different chemical releases into the environment, the Jatropha oil has become the best option, noting that if properly processed, can burn smoothly without releasing carbon-monoxide into the environment.

    Responding, the National President, Retired Major General J.A Omosebi felicitated with the Vice Chancellor on his appointment.  He said with him as a member of JAGPEAN and also a head of a science oriented University, there is a hope for science research into biogas.

    On his part, the Consultant to the group, Paul Ugboro recounted the level already attained with some notable Universities in Nigeria, including Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA, Landmark University, Covenant University, and Redeemed University.

    On his part, the Chairman of the Delta State chapter of the group, Mr. Roman Otite and the National Auditor, Pa Moses Towanshe, stressed on the importance of a pilot plant in the state and appealed to the Vice Chancellor to help the group to achieve this from the government sector and that they will be glad if they are remembered for attaining such a great height.

    Scores of youths in Ogbunike community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State have protested alleged abysmal representation by the immediate past member representing Oyi constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Mrs Vivian Okadigbo.

    The protesters under the aegies of Oyi Youth Initiative demanded proper accountability from the ex-lawmaker for the eight years of her two terms at the House of Assembly.

    The angry youths who marched from Awkuzu junction to the Local Government Secretariat, Nteje, carrying placards with different inscriptions, also demanded refund of the constituency funds to enable the constituents execute the projects themselves.

    They threatened to take up the matter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Crimes (ICPC) if she failed to make the refunds within 30 days.

    Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Comrade Mbamalu Uchenna said they were saddened that the former lawmaker had nothing to show her constituents between 2011 to 2019 she represented them.

    He alleged that Okadigbo had not been accountable to her constituents through constituency projects and town hall meetings for the period she held sway.

    He said, “It’s appalling and embarrassing that such a woman, who is supposed to be a mother came and wasted our time, took all our constituency allocations, and abandoned the people she is supposed to represent.

    “This is unacceptable because the expectations of our people were completely dashed. In all of these, the good people of Oyi Constituency gave Mrs Okadigbo two complete tenures and there is nothing to show for it.”

    Reacting, Mrs Vivian Okadigbo said the protest was sponsored by her political opponents, wondering why such protest could not take place earlier in her tenure.

    She attributed her two terms tenure in the house to the quality representation she offered to her constituency.

    She said, “They should have done their protest earlier. I’m now based in Lagos. I was the only lawmaker that worked so well in Oyi than any other representative and had given them account on several occasions.”

    Ohaneze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as a Commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    President General of the group, Barr Basil Onuorah in a statement on Saturday described those against the nomination as insincere and ignorant of the history and the provisions of the law.

    He attributed Onochie’s nomination as a result of dedicated hard work and sincerity, urging Nigerian Senate to confirm her appointment without delay.

    In the statement which reads in part, it said, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide is pleased with the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as an INEC Commissioner.

Those criticising the nomination of Onochie, where were they in 2011 when President Jonathan appointed Ambassador Lawrence Nwuruku as an INEC Commissioner? Nwuruku contested governorship election under the platform of PDP, a card carrying member of PDP and Jonathan’s campaign coordinator in Ebonyi State.”

    The Chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Edo State chapter, Mr. Nosa Osemwota, has urged the Godwin Obaseki administration to invest more in education to empower youths and make them better citizens.

    He also enjoined the state government to provide bursary and free education for the blind in institutions, to ease their burden.

    Osemwota, accompanied by members of the association, spoke yesterday in Benin while marking this year’s White Cane Day.

    He said investment in education was the best thing that could happen to any human being, irrespective of his physical condition.

  • UPP collapses structures into PDP in Imo

    Imo State chapter of the deregistered United Progressive Party (UPP) has collapsed its structures at the state, local government and ward levels into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Chris Uche, told The Nation on Thursday in Owerri that UPP fused into PDP because of its stability.

    “We had options because other parties approached us, but we decided to defect to PDP because of its stability.

    “This is the first time in the history of the country when the entire party will collapse its structures into another party,” he said.
