    • Condemn attempted abduction of medical director

Workers at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu yesterday disowned the people who protested alleged mismanagement of the institution by the Medical Director, Prof. Monday Igwe.

A protest was said to have been held on August 30 in front of the hospital main gate, with placards-bearing persons chanting angry songs against the medical director.

The protesters, who claimed to be workers of the hospital, were led by people who claimed to be Civil Society Organisation (CSO) leaders.

They alleged that there was no peace in the hospital and that the workers were unhappy, alongside other allegations levelled against the medical director.

But addressing reporters after their joint meeting at the hospital in Enugu, members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu branch, distanced themselves from the protest, describing it as a stage-managed action.

MDCAN Chairman Dr. Jane Nnabuchi said: “Our attention has been drawn to the stage-managed protest that happened in front of the hospital gates in the evening of August 30.

“We hereby debunk the stage-managed protest by a group of hired thugs that called themselves staff.

“We state that the information was not only false, but was also made to mislead the public and cause confusion.”

She said there was no crisis at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu and that the hospital was peaceful, as workers were happy with the administration of Prof. Igwe.

Nnabuchi added that the stage-managed protest was carried out by thugs hired to discredit and destabilise the medical director “and our hospital activity.”

“We want to challenge anybody on that protest video circulating around to provide any proof of identity as workers of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu or student of School of Post Basic Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing of our hospital

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the publication and the perpetrators of this dastardly and worthless act, but we are issuing a rejoinder to stop them from misleading the public and most importantly, to put the information in the proper perspective,” she said.

The workers also condemned what they called sponsored attempt at abducting the medical director under the guise of arrest by unknown men who claimed to be policemen.

Nnabuchi said: “On September 14, we also witnessed a sponsored attempt at harassing and abducting our medical director under the guise of “arrest” by three unidentified police officers, who came with an unmarked Sienna vehicle from Awka, Anambra State.

“The situation created a scene and disrupted the activities of the hospital community and would have escalated to an uglier scenario if not for the intervention of Enugu State Police Command.”

The workers, therefore, called on the Federal Ministry of Health to intervene.

Energy expert calls for gradual transition to renewables

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kenyon International, Dr. Victor Ekpenyong, has advocated a gradual switch to renewable energy sources, as the country’s carbon emission is negligible.

Ekpenyong, a well control expert, noted that conversations around climate change and renewable energy was skewed against the African continent, which made minimal contribution to global warming.

A statement issued yesterday by the Communications Manager, Kenyon, Mr. Kingsley Muonyili, said Ekpenyong spoke during a roundtable discussion at the 12th Emmanuel Egbogah Legacy Lecture Series held at the Emerald Institute of Energy Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Ekpenyong called for a national interest approach to address the critical intersection of climate change and the geopolitics of energy transition.

He said: “With a strong emphasis on Nigeria’s unique position in the global landscape, there is need for a nuanced approach to sustainable development.

“We need to emphasise the importance of evaluating regional realities when addressing climate change issues, highlighting the importance of considering carbon emission quotas and economic circumstances.”

He urged stakeholders in the oil industry to unite so that Nigeria could produce more oil and gas to generate revenue to aid the smooth transition to renewable energy sources.

According to Ekpenyong, Nigeria’s relatively minimal contribution to global carbon emissions should be capitalised on to harness the abundant oil and gas reserves to fund energy transition.

He said a recent report on global carbon emission released on September 3, 2023 indicated that Africa accounted for just four per cent of global carbon emissions.

Ekpenyong added: “In stark contrast, major global players such as the United States, China, Russia and Japan collectively contribute more than 50 per cent of these emissions.

“Nigeria is not among the top three contributors of carbon emissions on the African continent, trailing behind South Africa, Egypt and Algeria.”

Ekpenyong urged a strategic approach to managing Nigeria’s finite energy resources, emphasising the need for resource management, increased production and resource utilisation.

He also highlighted the necessity of proactive measures to combat pipeline vandalism and oil theft in the oilfields, which had long hindered the nation’s development.

He said: “Kenyon International, as a company committed to sustainable energy solutions, is well-prepared to assist Nigeria in optimising its oil production through well remediation and intervention activities.

“Accounting for every drop of oil produced is not only vital for Nigeria’s economic prosperity, but also essential for the nation’s sustainable development.

“Kenyon International believes in the call for a comprehensive approach to climate change and energy transition, one that considers regional realities, promotes responsible resource management and propels Nigeria towards a greener, more sustainable future.”

Otu’s wife make case for girls’ involvement in coding, others

To inspire curiosity and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), wife of Cross River State Governor, Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu, has advocated more involvement of secondary school girls in coding, gaming and robotics.

Mrs. Otu was a special guest of honour at a graduation ceremony for 120 secondary school girls trained in coding, gaming and robotics by an organisation, Guru Innovation Hub, in collaboration with the governor’s wife, held in Calabar.

The training is to be replicated across the three senatorial districts in the state, with a target of about 10,000 beneficiaries.

The organisers said the initiative was borne out of the zeal of the governor’s wife to increase the percentage of women working at STEM-related industries.

The project is designed to spark interest, curiosity and enthusiasm in these fields among secondary school girls in SS1-3, who are between 13 and 18 years in the three senatorial districts, while promoting inclusivity and diversity.

The governor’s wife, represented by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Justin Beshel, said STEM had become the driving force of progress, stressing that “these fields hold the key to innovation, development and prosperity.”

Commissioner for Youths Development, Odum Ukam, advised the participants to brace up for the challenges ahead of them.

The founder of Guru Innovation Hub, Oyo Effiom, said: “If the girls are not exposed to these programmes, they won’t even know they can have a career in these fields.”

Ohakim expresses worry over  Imo Charter of Equity

Imo State former Governor Ikedi Ohakim has said the impression that Imo Charter of Equity is a new document is wrong because it has been running since 1998, until it was truncated by ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha in 2011.

The new charter was articulated by Imo Elders Council and endorsed by Governor Hope Uzodimma this year to ensure key elective offices, especially those of the governor, are rotated among the three senatorial zones with less rancour.

Reacting to the document while addressing reporters at his Owerri home yesterday, Dr. Ohakim said the impression ought not to have been given that Imo Charter of Equity was being discussed for the first time.

He said: “Apart from the fact that it is misleading, it denies the generality of the people the opportunity to put it in its proper historical perspective, which is the only way we can understand why it has remained elusive.”

Ohakim, who traced the historical background of the charter, however, blamed the collapse on the lies sold to the Imo people by Okorocha that he would serve only one term as well as promoting false allegation against him of flogging a reverend father, hence the Catholic without proper investigation bought the lies, which eventually truncated the charter of equity in the state.

According to the former governor, “I agree with the elders who drafted the current charter with the proviso that its implementation will begin after the incumbent governor, Senator Uzodimma, has completed his second term in 2028.

Read Also: Impeached Ogun council boss lied against me – Abiodun

“Given our experience in 2003 and 2015 – forget the aberration of 2011 – we have to take into consideration the factor of a sitting governor. It is heartwarming that Governor Uzodimma is favourably disposed to the idea of returning to the charter because it will take a sitting governor to make it work; as we witnessed under Governor Achike Udenwa and as it is the case in all the states around us where power-sharing is working.

“But if Uzodimma gets his second term through another round of scrambling for power among the three zones, it will again be ‘to your tents oh Isreal’. In other words, contrary to the thinking in some quarters that Governor Uzodimma might have engineered the new interest in the charter, the truth is that it will be impossible to implement it without taking his interest -as an incumbent – into account.”

On insecurity, Ohakim admitted that the situation is worrisome in the state and across the Southeast, but he exonerated Governor Uzodimma from the insinuations that he deliberately hoisted it in the state.

He described such a notion as nonsensical even when the governor and himself had been victims of insecurity, noting that Governor Uzodimma was on top of the situation.

Ohakim said verifiable statistics with the Nigeria Police does not show that Imo State has the highest number of crime in the Southeast.

“As a private citizen, I move around the Southeast and I can say without any fear of contradiction that on the matter of insecurity, our dear state, Imo, is not worse off. That does not mean that we should give any room for complacency, but we should not blackmail ourselves and act in a manner that will undermine the collective integrity of our dear state and its people.

“I have been personally involved in several meetings on the matter of insecurity in the Southeast and I know that the governors are doing quite a lot. Whether we like it or not, the matter rests squarely on the shoulders of the Federal Government; which is why I will once again restate my position that in this highly tempestuous time, we need a governor who enjoys a good reputation with the federal authorities as Governor Uzodimma does,” he said.

Ohakim called on youths to try as much as possible to protect the elders, instead of being used as tools to destroy their future and render the society ungovernable.

  • Rice farmers worried over predicted flooding, pest attacks

Rice farmers worried over predicted flooding, pest attacks

Rice farmers in Bayelsa State have expressed concern about the predicted flooding in the state and constant pest attacks on their farms.

The Federal Government recently warned that 13 states including Bayelsa could be affected by flooding as a result of heavy rainfall.

The farmers, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa, urged the government to put necessary measures in place to save their farms from being washed away.

According to them, the rising water level in the surrounding rivers is a threat to their premature rice farms as they do not have nearby functional processing facilities.

The Managing Director of Ovieya Rice Farm, Mr. Ovieya Sini, told NAN that he had invested much in his 15 plots of rice farm in Famgbe Community, Yenagoa.

Sini said his major fear was the rising water level, which made it difficult for him to access the farm except with canoe.

He also said constant attacks by pests and unavailability of functional processing facility in Yenagoa made things difficult for him and other rice farmers.

Sini called on the government to assist the farmers with pesticides and processing facility in order to produce rice that could feed Bayelsa and other neighbouring states in the Niger Delta.

“I am operating a rice farm that is more than 15 plots in Famgbe Community, but currently confronting the challenges of flooding of farmlands.

“Pests attacks and unavailability of nearby processing facility are serious issues;  this is why I am calling on the government to save the farm and help me produce rice for use in the state.

“Another challenge here is how to convey the farm produce to upland for procession; you know our terrain is riverine.

“But if government can assist us with boats and other palliative measures,  we can produce rice that feed Bayelsa and other states, our land is good for rice cultivation.”

The managing director appealed for financial assistance from the government in order to help the farmers to expand their farms.

He said such financial assistance could enable him to expand his plots from 15 to 30 or 50 plots and contribute in tackling food shortage in the society.

“I have invested many resources already in the farm; but if government can assist with pesticides, tackle flooding in our society, we will have a bumper harvest.

“My vision is to produce rice that feed Bayelsa and other neighbouring states, as well as acquiring a processing machine that will help process our harvested rice in Bayelsa.” he said.

Another rice farmer, Mr. Bestman Ogbogi, lamented that the farms were already under flood and pest attacks.

He said the water level had risen and was flowing into their farms and pleaded with relevant authorities to intervene and save their farms.

Ogbogi called on the state government and the Federal Government to come to the aid of farmers so that their produce would not be destroyed by flood and pests.

Private school owners decry multiple taxation, marginalisation

Members of Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN) have raised the alarm over outrageous multiple taxes and levies by government agencies.

OPSAN National President Prof. Uzochukwu Nwanonyuo made this known in Onitsha, Anambra State, during the inauguration of the state executive led by Chief Earnest Iwuamadi.

He said it was regrettable that the government viewed them as business ventures, calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to review and harmonise school levies into one tax payment.

Nwanonyuo said: “We call on the governor to intervene. Private schools must be prevented from multiple taxation, illegal levies and other unwarranted payments.

“Another challenge is the encroachment and harassment being witnessed by the supposed group, ‘Anambra State Joint Enforcement Unit’.

“Government needs to make the regulatory unit understand that schools are not similar to commercial environment. It requires decorum; otherwise their activities have been affecting quality education in the state.

“We proprietors are not running profit oriented businesses. Rather, we are doing social services for God and humanity, helping the government to address decadence in educational system.”

Anambra State OPSAN President Chief Earnest Iwuamadi, commending his predecessor for effective leadership and successful transition, decried marginalisation of private schools.

An OPSAN Board of Trustees (BoT) member and former Ogidi zone Chairman, Dr. Mary Obiokoye of Model Innovative School of Today, Nkpor, canvassed for more political appointments for proprietors from private schools.

Southeast NNPP leaders unite for national leadership

Leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the Southeast have reaffirmed their confidence in the national leadership of the party.

The stance is contained in a statement, signed by the Caretaker Committee Chairman, Enugu State, Mr. Chidi Akim, at the end of an emergency meeting in Enugu yesterday.

He said after examining the recent happenings in the party, the party leadership in the Southeast considered it very expedient to reach the following resolutions:

“That we have confidence in the national executive of the party, led by Abba Kawu-Ali.

“That leaders in the Southeast are in support of any measure or policy initiated to move the party forward.

“That party members in the zone are in support of the present reforms going on in the party, as this will reposition it for future engagements.

“We wish to disassociate the leadership of the party in the Southeast from the said news conference granted by the group which called itself “Forum of NNPP Southeast National Assembly Candidate.

“We strongly affirm that this group is neither known to the NNPP Southeast nor to the national leadership.

“We also affirm that there is one NNPP under the leadership of Abba Kawu-Ali.”

  • Open letter to President Tinubu

    Open letter to President Tinubu

The President of the Federal Government of Nigeria,

    Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    Your Excellency,

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA, ALHAJI BOLA AHMED TINUBU – II

I hereby congratulate you again for some of the actions taken since your assumption of office as the President. However, the actions of other Government Departments need to be integrated with those of Federal Government to serve as a path of real growth and development without negative distracting forces?

I wish to recall my first open letter then addressed to President-Elect, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT). It was published by: The Nation Newspaper Online, 12 May, 2023; The Nigerian Tribune Online, 13 May, 2023; The Hope Newspaper in print, 29 May, 2023. Therein I made a few suggestions which I think should help the present administration to move the nation to a level that is better than those of the “Developed Nations” of the third world. The key issues among them are:

    1. A SEVEN-YEAR STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN: The plan should include long-term projects that are impossible to complete in the three-year plan usually called the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). The purpose of repeating it and emphasising it here is to remind the president that after the initial rush to create impact in the first one hundred days or a few months of “short-term measures,” without the laid-down goals and strategies as Working Scheme or Road Map, there may be a regress into the common “Business As Usual” attitude.

Monitoring the achievements against the laid-down plans with stated goals and strategies, through the regular reports in data, charts and maps, as reports by the Minister of Strategic Planning, to the President and Ministers themselves, is an excellent reminder of the achievements vis-a-vis the target goals intended as stated in my first letter. A Picture is worth a thousand words. The Ministries will then continually be using them as self-appraisal against the STRATEGIES and the SMART GOALs that they agreed to achieve. The laid-down strategic plan should then serve as effective Road Map to significant achievement for the government and a paradigm progress for the nation. It should serve as “A Road Map to Nation Building.”

From the strategies could also be derived some (not all required) Institutional Frameworks which may transcend tribal and ethnic boundaries.

The actions announced by the president, with the exception of the Palliatives and the attempted war on Niger, are good. The palliatives need to be modified to reach the poor and so that it is not also hijacked by any group, otherwise, it will not alleviate the problem of removal of petroleum subsidy. As I said in my first letter we have always had good plans but lack the HOW and the WILL to implement them well accordingly as planned. A well-thought out plan is only as good as implemented. This is why I still repeat the monitoring stated in my first letter.

    • STRATEGIC PLANNING AND INTEGRATION: To hurry to do quick actions within one hundred days without continuous steady progress is not sustainable development and is not good planning. To take time to plan without being hurried is a nice approach. More haste less speed but steady progress yields sustainable development. The progress made after a year or after four years is more important that ‘the first hundred days’ that people always talk about. An integrated approach is better than short-term measures. There must be integration among the various Government Departments and Agencies.

Already some Government Departments, such as Commercial banks and Immigration, to name a few, recently seized, rather unduly, the opportunity of subsidy removal to increase charges on some of their operations. Do they need fuel to run the ATM machines? All these will, not only remove the effect of any measures that the government puts or intend to put in place to alleviate the effect of subsidy removal. They also have the combined effect of increased inflation. Government Departments and Agencies seem to be working at cross purposes to that of Government. NO integration. Effect is increased Inflation and economic hardship to people which we are witnessing now.

    • BANKING REFORM: We appreciate the presidential action already taken on the restructuring of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The president must not yield to platitudes and sentiments in the attempt to revisit the previous deliberate, ill-motivated, ill-conceived Naira Re-Design and other CBN policies which led to significant damage to the economy. Nigerians are quick to apply emotions and sentiments to sensitive national issues which do us no good. The action of the CBN Governor was not a mistake but deliberate action. Let everybody reap the reward for his actions. That is the Natural Law.

Please recall that as a result of the CBN Naira re-design policy and the method of its application: (1) The economy nose-dived.

    (2) Many people lost their lives in the execution of the policy as a result of the ambition of one man or a few people against the state. Today, where are the new notes printed or colored? The notes should by now be regularly dispensed more than the old notes at the commercial banks if they are readily available.

Could Plea Bargain serve as appropriate reward or compensation for the lives lost as a result of his actions? Could he be prosecuted for Man Slaughter? “Measure for Measure” will serve as deterrent to such future similar actions.

Commercial Banks. The next step in the Reform should be at the commercial banks. Government should ensure that the CBN carries out its responsibilities of controlling the banks, which includes the control of bank unreasonable charges on depositors’ accounts that make depositors to be overcharged. Double charges for transfers for the same transaction; Card maintenance charges three times a year for ATM card already paid for on issue should be eliminated etc. All these have over-burdened depositors. The banks have already increased charges on every withdrawal at ATM as a result of petrol subsidy removal. Nigerians are helpless and tired, being used to impunity every time. The CBN seems to have abandoned its responsibility of checking the excesses of commercial banks.

I wish to repeat here that the banking sector should be restructured with appropriate guidelines to be monitored and offending banks given appropriate sanctions which serve as deterrent to future similar actions.

    • Reflating the Economy: We need to reflate the economy to stimulate production. The President’s action to modify the stated palliatives demonstrated that the president listened to the voice of people. Efforts should be made to prevent any arm of government from hijacking future plans meant for poor people to themselves. Palliatives are short-term measures. Please note that the economy cannot grow without removal of economic impunity inflicted on Nigerians by Nigerians. Justice is the first essential condition for a developed society. Those who have plunged Nigeria into debt and hardship including especially the NNPCL through looting and impunity should be probed. This is economic justice. The economy cannot improve without removal and prevention of economic injustice inflicted on Nigerians by Nigerians. This is what can serve as deterrent to future similar actions and what can make Nigerians and the entire world have implicit confidence in this administration.
    • Security. Security is the most urgent problem to be addressed if the country should be developed. Security should be tackled first. Agriculture should be the next. My advice on security as stated in my first Open Letter to the President-Elect refers. Without security of life and properties there can be no increase in food production. Without solving the problem of security, so that farmers can freely go to their farms, whatever economic efforts are made to enhance agriculture, cannot guarantee food security. There are no police assistance in the rural areas, so bandits, herders and criminal elements always have unfettered access to launch attack on farmers.

Boko haram and banditry: We have the wars on Boko haram and Banditry to contend with. We should as a matter of compulsion, not just necessity, exercise our energies to face these wars first. Until we have successfully exterminated these wars in Nigeria, we cannot have food security or peace.

    • Agriculture and agricultural processing should be the next sector after security to receive the boost of government efforts. Just as it is bad that farmers abandon their farms because of insecurity, it is equally bad to rely on importation of food whether partially or fully. It means that we are at the mercy of those exporting countries which may export poor or dangerous food items into the country. No responsible government relies on importation of food for her citizens. Another danger is that it kills the morale and business of indigenous farmers. It cripples the economy of the country. The country should be safe for every Nigerian to do honest business.

Loans to Agriculture and Agricultural Processing should not be more than 2%, otherwise payback may be impossible. Agriculture and Agricultural Processing should be given a boost through grants or less than 2% loan interest. Developed countries such as Britain and US understand the dynamics of food production and availability vis-a-vis the health of the nation. Britain sometimes gives loan for agriculture at 0.2% while US gives subsidies on agriculture. They know that a nation that cannot feed her citizens is a poor nation. It may lead to ill-health and other accompanying problems.  Many years ago, Japan started producing rice at a cost which was four times the cost of importing it from Thailand. They subsidized the cost to make it available to their people. Their desire was for their farmers to develop and master the technology of rice production. Instruction to banks, which prefer high interests, to merely give single digit loan interest may only yield 9% interest which is too high for agriculture.

    • Foreign Affairs:  Nigeria should not saddle itself with resolution of the coup in Niger Republic. I am repeating it here that we should avoid directives from Developed Countries – China, Western World and their agencies such as IMF and World Bank etc. without confrontation. Please note that their diplomatic moves may come through Nigerians here or Nigerians abroad pretending to advance the help of government. No developed country is ready to help Nigeria, or indeed any third world country to achieve development. They said it and demonstrated it at different fora that they don’t wish Africa to develop. We should not follow them or accept dictations which come by way of subtle advice. They are only interested in extorting our resources. The approach by all African countries should be to view them as competitors for the world’s resources. Indeed, we all, are!

Nigeria should not saddle itself with resolution of the coup in Niger. Africa and African nations should come together to remove the yoke of Western imperialism, which is what the coupists in Niger and the other Francophone countries seem to be agitating for. There should be no war against Niger Republic. Must we add another problem to those we are currently facing: the wars against Boko haram and Banditry? There should be no war on any African country by any African nation. Dialogue should be the approach to any regional problem. There should be Non-alignment with either the West or Eastern Block. We need economic freedom not alignment.

    • Institutional frameworks: We should automate processes of getting things done in every Ministry and Government Agency as part of efforts to install institutional frameworks and integration of Government policies and actions.

  • Abia stakeholders hail tribunal validation of Orji Kalu’s victory, ask PDP, LP to accept verdict

Abia stakeholders hail tribunal validation of Orji Kalu’s victory, ask PDP, LP to accept verdict

Prominent leaders from Abia State have commended Tuesday’s judgment of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal that validated the victory of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the lawmaker representing Abia North.

The stakeholders described the verdict as thorough, stressing that it addressed all the issues raised by the petitioners.

According to a renowned security consultant and lawyer, Dr. Ody Ajike, the judgment was a true reflection of the mandate the people of Abia North Senatorial District delivered at the last National Assembly election.

He urged the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Nnamdi Iro Orji, and his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)Mao Ohuabunwa, to cooperate with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in its effort to address the myriad of challenges facing the District.

He said: “The judgment is a valuable, well deserved and rewarding development in the politics of Abia North Senatorial Zone. As we all know, Judicial decisions as regards political competition will always produce competing interests that are usually resolved through consensus and compromise. This judgment is one that will further unite Abia North under Senator Orji Kalu’s primal leadership. I plead with the other candidates  to join forces with Senator Kalu for the promotion of peace and stability in our senatorial zone.

“Senator Orji Kalu has brought a new meaning of development to Abia North by fostering profound changes and transformational developments that are paradigmatic. Senator Kalu is deliberately promoting stability and democracy within the senatorial Zone by restoring political trust, encouraging political participation in new ways, building new mechanisms of effective people oriented governance and enhancing collaboration with the people. He has provided every area within the zone with a slew of non excludable public goods and social investments in health, education, public infrastructure and maximal incentives that promote economic growth.

The Abia State Chairman of Reality Organisation, Barr. Peter Ndukwe expressed excitement, noting that the decision of the tribunal has kept hope alive for the people of Abia North.

“The unanimous judgement of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia State upholding and validating the re-election of distinguished Senator Dr Orji Uzor Kalu is infallible and unimpeachable as it represents the true picture and sacrosanct position of the law.

“In fact the judgment which I firmly believe will be upheld and sustained if appealed by the aggrieved parties, will  greatly enrich our electoral jurisprudence and case law. Virtually all issues raised or and canvassed in both the petition of PDP and Labour party were not germane but trivial,  frivolous and could not be proven or established by hard facts and law.

“My candid opinion and advice to Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and Chief Nnamdi Iro Orji and their respective political parties (PDP and Labour) is for them to sheath their appellate swords and congratulate His Excellency and distinguished Senator Dr Orji Uzor Kalu (MON) for a well deserved victory.

“I am excited, elated and fascinated by the well reasoned, researched and erudite delivery of the aforesaid judgement by the respected judges. The said judgement has kept hope alive for Ndi Abia North, Abia State and Nigeria. Enough of the distractions so that OUK can continue with his massive infrastructural developments and legacy projects for Abia North Senatorial district. Thumb up for the National Assembly Election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia. Congratulations to the great OUK.”

The Abia State Chairman of Abia’s largest socio-political group, OUK Movement, Hon. Ojisi Iro Ogbaja said: “The decision of the erudite judges was a thorough one that ensures that the wish of the people prevails. The masses applaud the judgment as a victory for democracy to the working Senator — and we appeal to those opposing him to allow Abia North to work.”

Chairman of Association of Nze, Ozo and Chiefs (ANOC) USA, Chief Sunday Okoro, applauded the ruling of the tribunal, saying: “Congratulations to Honorable Senator Orji Uzor Kalu on your great victory at the tribunal. I already knew he was going to win the tribunal matter; because, his winning during the election was a clear victory. The tribunal case was only to fulfill the due process of law. A three man panel led by Justice Samson Paul-Gang in its unanimous ruling on Tuesday, September 12, dismissed the petition of Peoples Democratic Party’s Mao Ohuabunwa and Labour Party’s Nnamdi Iro Orji for lacking merit.

The court, while upholding the victory of Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that the election of the former Senate Chief Whip compiled with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The tribunal judges also faulted the arguments of both petitioners that election did not hold in over 120 polling units mainly in Ohafia and Arochukwu Local Government Areas of the zone.

Nnamdi Iro and Ohuabunwa who came second and third respectively, Labour Party, in separate suits had asked the court to overturn the election of the former Abia Governor as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, alleging irregularities.

Also thrown out was the petition of the PDP and LP was the argument that the  total number of registered voters in the said affected polling units was far above the margin of win between Kalu and the first and second runners-up.
