  • Eulogy for Mrs Margaret Ehidiamen

    Eulogy for Mrs Margaret Ehidiamen

    • By, Jennifer Okaima Piette (nee Ehidiamen)

When I was eleven, I pleaded (or maybe demanded) that my mother allow me to attend boarding school. The common entrance exam results had just been released, and judging by my score, I was qualified to attend the elitist Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) in Benin City, Edo State. I didn’t know back then that my mother’s meager salary as a teacher was insufficient to cover the expenses. But somehow, she made it happen.

When I was twenty-one, I was selected to participate in a six-month youth exchange program sponsored by the British Council and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in the United Kingdom. For the first three months, I volunteered as a researcher in a nonprofit organization based in Birmingham, U.K. For another three months, along with other youth volunteers (eight British and nine Nigerians), we spent another three months volunteering in Jos Plateau State, Nigeria. These experiences influenced my career choice in global development, and my mother’s investment in helping me gain independence early on built my confidence and grit.

I never got a chance to connect these dots with my mother through a reflective reminisce because, on June 26, 2023, four days before my 39th (thirty-ninth) birthday, she transitioned from this precarious world as we know it.

    My mother

My mother, Princess (Mrs.) Margaret Otayo Ehidiamen, née Oseghale, was a lover of life. She cultivated every second of it, sharing her life and light with others. Born to the royal family of Omontuemen Okojie, my mother grew up in Uromi, Edo state. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Girls Grammar School Uromi; Mary Mount College (OLA), Agbor, Delta State; and College of Education Abraka, Delta State (which has evolved into Delta State University); and the University of Ibadan, where she earned her educational certificates.

My mother pursued careers in sports and teaching. She represented her schools in many sporting events, including swimming, track, long tennis, and badminton. Her athletic prowess was well-known to many, and she often talked about how she took part in a track competition while pregnant.

My mother married my father, Asia Ehidiamen, at an early age, and they had seven children (six surviving children) in good wealth. I am the sixth (technically, the seventh) child, and the two greatest gifts I received from my parents are a good name (good character) and a quality education.

Growing up, I enjoyed being called a teacher’s daughter and all the extras that came with the title, such as not paying for the famous PTA levy, not being punished by other teachers, and not being mishandled by peers or bullies at school. From my mother, I learned the art and act of being strong and tenacious. As a teacher, she spent years contributing to the human capital development of the youths in Uromi before moving to Lagos State, where she continued to work as a teacher, then elevated to the position of assistant headmistress and retired as a headteacher (headmistress) after 35 years of active service as a civil servant. Many accolades/awards of excellence distinguished my mum’s career as a teacher. I have had one or two people stop me on the street or send me messages on Facebook to ask if I am Mrs. Ehidiamen’s daughter. They would then recount how their lives were impacted positively by my mother’s classroom influence in primary school. It is always very inspiring to take it all in.

    Multi-dimensional problem-solver

My mother was undoubtedly a hardworking, multi-talented woman who invested time in solving multi-dimensional challenges in her community. Even though she was a teacher by profession, she expressed her entrepreneurial acumen and talents through other channels. My mum was a talented singer and thrived as a chorister at the Church of God Mission, where she first embraced the gift of Salvation and generously propagated the gospel of Christ to others, including her family members. She was a hair stylist (she owned a Salon in the early years). She was a farmer (in Uromi), and many years later, she still enjoyed keeping a small garden (in her house in Akute/Magboro). She was a social butterfly who did not miss an opportunity to celebrate with others and often would be trusted to cook large party meals (friends and families trusted her skills even though she didn’t own a professional catering service). As a well-rounded entrepreneur, my mum’s interests were not limited by international borders. She would often spontaneously travel out of the country (to Benin Republic/Togo) to buy goods, which she traded in Lagos. My mum could knit/crotchet with her eyes close or use a sewing machine to create a garment and repair a slit like a trained seamstress. Beyond the business focus, my mum was an encourager. I recall people often came to her to seek counsel/guidance. And she was generous with her home – accommodating relatives and strangers who needed a place to stay.

    A lasting legacy

My mother, Mrs. Margaret Otayo Ehidiamen, will never be forgotten. She has left a lasting legacy through her accomplishments and impact. Her positive values, memories, and love will be passed down to future generations. I will always remember her as an extraordinary woman who tried everything.

  • Adegboyega Oyetola takes up the gauntlet at Marine and Blue Economy Ministry

Adegboyega Oyetola takes up the gauntlet at Marine and Blue Economy Ministry

    • By Femi Soneye

The gravitas of former Governor of Osun State, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has helped in defining his governance of the State of Osun (the nomenclature that has now been changed to the original name — Osun State — by Governor Ademola Adeleke).  Although, he did not win his re-election bid, but that is not to suggest that he did not perform as governor.  Beyond the political hullabaloo and the claptrap of opposition elements’ shenanigans, Oyetola largely steered clear of the constraining and retarding frays except that he harboured and nurtured a deep-seated anti-Aregbesola sentiments.  That was understandable.

Although, he was the Chief of Staff to Aregbesola from 2010 to 2018 until he was “anointed’’ by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Aregbesola’s successor, his emergence did not discount his proclivity towards independence.  In fact, were it not for Tinubu’s final say on the issue, Oyetola would not have been governor. If the knowledge of how he emerged as governor continued to serve him as a constant reminder of Aregbesola’s opposition to his governorship, it should be understandable why he (Oyetola), upon stepping into the saddle, was not bound defer to his ex-boss or beholden to Aregbesola.

Oyetola was, therefore, his own man from the outset.  He cut a niche for himself as a sharp-focused and sharp-witted administrator, who quietly addressed the issues of workers’ welfare to which his predecessor in office paid a scant interest. Under his administration, the pensioners had a better deal than in his predecessor’s era. Whereas, it was easy to implicate the meagre monthly allocation from the Federation Account and  the grim financial realities occasioned by the low-level Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) that could not bolster infrastructure development, Oyetola largely succeeded in moderating the governance tension in Osun.

He had brought his wealth of experience in the insurance sector and his eight-year closeness to state governance as Chief of Staff to Aregbesola to bear on the administration of the state. He fostered robust collaborations with various local, national, and international development partners even as he deployed those partnerships in driving advancements across key sectors of the state’s economy. Patently urbane in his disposition, he was also forthright, disciplined, and unwavering in his commitment to encourage and nurture these invaluable partnerships and alliances.

And to be sure, Oyetola’s leadership in Osun State epitomized steadfast effort, diligence and visionary approach to governance which has marked him out as a public administrator par excellence.

Just as he has hit the ground running as the new Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Oyetola had, consequent upon assuming office on November 27, 2018, as Osun governor, hit the ground running, spearheading a remarkable revolution across diverse sectors of the Osun economy. Operating under an inclusive and participatory model of governance, Oyetola embarked on an ambitious revitalization agenda in the health sector.

Notably, he achieved a historic milestone by simultaneously revitalizing 332 Primary Healthcare Centres, one per ward, setting a precedent in Nigeria’s history. Furthermore, Oyetola audaciously implemented ground-breaking transformations in the education sector, passionately responding to the aspirations and expectations of the people as well as national and international development partners and stakeholders programmes.

Today, Oyetola brings into the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry the magnitude of his administrative savoir faire and intense patriotic passion to drive the new ministry on the trajectory of success in its mission to help bolster the economy of Nigeria to usher in national prosperity.

Having taken up the gauntlet, he must be at home with the reasons President Bola Tinubu redeployed him to the new ministry and, therefore, he must keep fidelity with those reasons so that his performance is not underwhelming or outright uninspiring.  It is, therefore, not in doubt that he enjoys the trust and confidence of the President. He must not disappoint his appointor or Nigerians who look up to him to dazzle.

Early feelers from the Ministry have indicated that Oyetola has placed his hands on the plough and is not ready to look back. Realizing that he is going to exercise authority and supervisory role in the running of revenue-generating agencies under his ministry, including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), among others, Oyetola as soon as he assumed office, undertook a familiarization tour of the agencies.  His speeches were inspiring and uplifting. He spoke encouragingly to the management of the agencies; he did not talk down on them. Rather, he gave commendations appositely about the performance of CEOs and the management. This, of course, is the mark of positive leadership; a leadership that is ready to lead the way and work in synergy for achieving results.

Oyetola left no one in doubt by giving an insight into the kind of pragmatic leadership he would provide as the political head of the ministry. The resentment he expressed during the meeting was targeted at illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which he said he would tackle headlong.  He promised to invest energies and resources in harnessing marine tourism, safety and security as top priorities on the agenda of his administration as Minister of the newly-created Ministry of Marine and Blue economy.  According to him, the time has come for Nigeria to fully harness its vast potentialities in the maritime sector, noting that the working visit to NPA and NIMSA and others was to ascertain and properly appraise the situation of things with a view to taking practical steps and measures towards addressing them.

At NIMASA, for instance, he said: “Today, we have come to see some of the things you told us in Abuja and to properly appraise the situation of things with a view to taking practical steps towards addressing them. I am particularly interested in the NIMASA Modular Floating Dock because of its potential to generate employment and stem capital flight.

“But we must find a way of ensuring stakeholders’ buy-in, in whatever we do so that we are seen to be working together for the growth and development of Nigeria.”

Noting that it was time for Nigeria to float a National Carrier, Oyetola stressed that through a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement and the support of stakeholders, such a plan would be achieved in the interest of the maritime industry and Nigeria.

No doubt, Oyetola certainly knows his onions.  He is on top of his game in the marine and blue economy sector. He said management of the resources of Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy entails proactive, smart and strategic thinking, even as he called for the rediscovery, harnessing, and packaging of the nation’s maritime resources, including seafoods in line with all associated international standards and specifications. A further peep into his development agenda in the ministry presents a plethora of some impressive to-do things, to wit: changing the narrative of Nigeria as a net importer of fishery products to make Nigeria a major player in the sector; ensuring safety and security of the maritime corridors of Nigeria; development of marine tourism as a revenue spinner at a time when revenue from non-oil sector has become sacrosanct.

This is one of the ways Oyetola’s mind works: “Nigeria makes up about 853 kilometres of the estimated 47,000 kilometres of coastline in Africa. Nigeria has one of the largest wetlands in the world, with its coastal and marine ecosystems covering a total of 70,000 square kilometres.

“There are countries around the world that rely solely on earnings from the tourism sector. Here in Nigeria, we also have what it takes to attract tourists to waters. Therefore, we shall be developing the infrastructure in cities and towns that are lake or coastal for this purpose.”

Oyetola has all it takes to perform as he is poised to deliver.  He cannot afford not to.  He has an opportunity to correct certain misconceptions in some quarters whose members are not at home with the political realities of Osun State and who probably think that he lost his bid for governorship re-election to Ademola Adeleke because he did not deliver as governor.  That was far from what happened. To prove that he is a performer any day, any time, Oyetola, according to feelers from sources close to him, is committed to give this present assignment his all and the required fillip. To fellow Nigerians watching from the sidelines, they should keep their fingers crossed and expect a noiseless stellar performance.

Ohanaeze honours Metchie for peace, security, growth, others

For promoting peace, security and growth in Umueri Community in Anambra East Local government and its environs, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, has honoured the African Director, International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), Ambassador John Metchie, as the ‘Best President General’ (PG) for the year, 2023.

Metchie, who is away in Germany with his wife Lolo Linda Metchie attending a United Nations Programme on world peace, was elected the President General of Umueri Community in Anambra State in 2022.

Presenting the award at the weekend, the Chairman, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Anambra East Local Government Area chapter, Dr. Marcel Molokwu, said  Metchie was chosen in recognition of his performance as President General of Umueri community, barely one year and few months in the office.

  • Don’t contravene PIA, no basis for Iwere Community Trust, Forum tells Olu Warri

Don’t contravene PIA, no basis for Iwere Community Trust, Forum tells Olu Warri

Oil-producing communities in Delta State have said that the setting up of Iwere Host Community Trust by the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse 11, contravened the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

The Forum of Concerned Indigenes of Oil-producing Communities said it is also illegal for the eminent monarch to propose the Iwere Trust to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for recognition.

In its view, the status of host communities is not synonymous with Itsekiri ethnic nation.

According to the group, PIA only made provisions for the establishment of Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs) for oil-producing communities.

In a statement by its chairman, Oritsejolomi Edema, and Secretary, Amorigoye Ezekiel, the Forum said the monarch’s decision was being resisted by the host communities to the Otumara Oil Fields and Flow Station.

The group urged NUPRC not to give recognition to the Iwere Trust, insisting that it is against the PIA provisions.

The statement reads: “Instead, the host communities, namely Ugborodo, Deghele, and Ugboegungun, legitimately demand for the establishment of Otumara Host Community Development Trust and Ikpere Host Community Development Trust, respectively, for a joint implementation of the PIA, with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) and NUPRC as incorporated in the PIA.

“The NUPRC to strictly adhere to the provisions of the law. The NUPRC should act only based on extant law, which is the PIA and its accompanying regulations. Anything outside the PIA breaches the ACT.”

The Forum pointed out that the two groups recognised and referred to as settlors in the Act are the IOC and the host communities, which are expected to meet and bring people together to constitute the Trust.

It said the Olu and his Palace only established a Trust that agglomerates the entire Itsekiri nation as one host community, thereby usurping the rights of oil-bearing communities.

The group said the impression was being created that any Itsekiri Community, that is not a host to oil facilities, can lay claim and be illegally recognised by NUPRC.

It added: “The PIA only recognises host communities and not ethnic groups, as done in the case of the general board of trustees constituted by the Olu of Warri, code-named Iwere Host Community Development Trust.

“This action is absolutely wrong and represents reckless digression from the law. As an imposition, it denies host communities their legitimate rights.

“The issue in contention is the demand that only host communities should determine their trustees and not the Palace of Olu. The PIA law has nothing to do with any kingdom. The word Iwere in fact encompasses every Itsekiri Community of Warri. The PIA does not authorize an omnibus inclusion of communities that are not host to oil facilities of the Federal Government.

“The Palace should not interfere in the arrangement between Abigborodo and NPDC. That arrangement was allowed to fly in accordance with the PIA, apparently because some prominent supporters and backers of the Palace are from that area.

“In the case of Abigborodo, NPDC did not go to the Palace. Both parties had their agreement signed and sealed independently. Is Abigborodo not part of the Itsekiri kingdom? Why was the proper procedure adopted in the case of that community?

“With the preferential treatment given to Abigborodo, it has become very clear that the action of the Palace is purely targeted at some individuals in other host communities, especially in the case of Ugborodo, Deghele, and Ugboegungun.

“This has to stop. The Olu and his Chiefs should be desirous of peace in the kingdom.”

  • Niger Delta stakeholders hail Tinubu over NDDC appointments

Niger Delta stakeholders hail Tinubu over NDDC appointments

South-south stakeholders have hailed President Bola Tinubu over the appointment of members of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board.

They lauded the appointment of an experienced technocrat, Chiedu Ebie, as chairman and retained Samuel Ogbuku as Managing Director.

In their views, merit overruled sentiments in the appointments, adding that the new board would defend the interests of oil-producing states and communities.

The chairman of Bayelsa Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Bubaraye Dakolo praised President Tinubu for appointing a substantive board on time, unlike previous governments who put in place interim administrations.

The monarch said: “I want to particularly thank His Excellency, the President of Nigeria for appointing this board on time. In the past, we have suffered situations where we have had interim administrations forever. So, I want to thank him so much for retaining Dr. Sam Ogbuku whom I know personally. I believe that the same quality of personalities is appointed in all the states.

“So, we look forward to the success of the board and a major deviation from the past because NDDC has been a show of shame in the past with countless failed projects and phantom projects. I think so far, in the few months the MD has been in charge, there have been major innovations and changes towards effectiveness. So, we are hoping for the best outcome this season.”

Also, a group, Niger Delta Youths Initiative for Peace, said President Tinubu could not have made a better choice for a new chairman of the NDDC than Ebie owing to his wealth of experience, administrative acumen, and track record.

The group said: “As youths who are passionate about the progress and development of the Niger Delta region, we received the announcement of Chiedu Ebie’s appointment as NDDC chairman with great joy. With this, the president has really demonstrated that he is passionate about giving our region a fresh breath of air.

“In the past, the appointment of NDDC chairman has always been based on sentiments and political affiliation. Even in the last administration, the person appointed as the chairman of NDDC was initially sent to INEC by President Buhari. When the Senate refused to confirm her, the president then sent her to NDDC as chairman.

“However, this time, President Tinubu has appointed someone with deep knowledge of the intricate issues surrounding the Niger Delta region as the NDDC chairman. We believe that Ebie would bring his wealth of experience to bear on the job. This team will realise the rapid development of the Niger Delta region, which is the core mandate of the Commission. We are delighted with this appointment and we will give him and his team our full support to succeed.”

In his reaction, Maxwell Asiriuwa, a public affairs analyst and rights activist, described the appointment as the best thing to happen to the Niger Delta, saying Ebie as chairman of the commission, has a rich political and administrative profile to deliver on the set mandate of the NDDC.

“The NDDC, no doubt is the biggest intervention agency in Nigeria. However, since its creation, it has not achieved its mandate due to sectional interests and politicking. I must commend the president for the constitution of this team, led by Hon. Ebie. The new chairman is a man I know very well and the MD who was retained has done a yeoman’s job since his assumption in January this year.”

A community leader in Bayelsa, Chief Johnson Igobasi, said given the sterling career profile, and wealth of experience of Ebie and his commitment to the Niger Delta region, it is certain that his appointment will be immensely beneficial to the entire South-South in particular, and the country, in general.

He noted: “On this appointment, I must say the president got it right. I see a president who is passionate about the vision of the NDDC, which is to create an enabling environment for the sustainable development of the Niger Delta region.

“I have known both the new Chairman and the MD for years and I can testify that they are seasoned technocrats who succeed in anything they lay their hands on. I strongly believe that with God and the cooperation of the Niger Deltans, we will see appreciable changes in the coming days”.

Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement, announced Ebie, a former Secretary to the Delta State Government as the chairman of the commission Ebie while Samuel Ogbuku from Bayelsa state is the Managing Director/CEO.

Others are Boma Iyaye – Executive Director (Finance and Admin) – Rivers; Victor Antai – Executive Director (Projects) – Akwa-Ibom; Ifedayo Abegunde – Executive Director (Corporate Services) – Ondo; Dimaro Denyanbofa – State Representative – Bayelsa; Abasi Ndikan Nkono – State Representative – Akwa Ibom and Monday Igbuya – State Representative – Delta.

Also on the list are Tony Okocha (Rivers); Patrick Aisowieren (Edo); Kyrian Uchegbu (Imo), Victor Kolade Akinjo (Ondo); Dimgba Eruba (Abia); Asu Oku Okang (Cross River); Nick Wende (North Central); Namdas Abdulrazak (North East) and Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir (North West).

Okoroaforanyanwu, secretary of the council, said the PDP’s choice of Anyanwu, who is from the Imo East senatorial district , favored the principle of equity.

He said the district had ruled the State for only seven months since the return of democratic rule in 1999.

Appoint Yerima into your cabinet, Ohanaeze Youths beg Tinubu

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has called for the inclusion of the national president, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Yerima Shettima into President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

The group described Shettima as a unifying figure for all the youth organisations in the country,  saying that he would represent all shades of interests.

The Igbo youths made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike.

Okwu said for several years now, Shettima has used his wealth of experience and great interpersonal relationship skill to douse tension across the country by always reaching out to the various youths during periods of crisis.

He said: “He has overtime devoted his life to the service of the country by championing peace and unity at all times.

“Alhaji Shettima, as the Board of Trustees, BoT, Chairman, Nigeria Ethnic Nationalities Youth Organisations, is one person who has effectively galvanised the various ethnic nationalities youth organisation, through which he always quells tension and disagreements among the various Nigerian societies.

Okwu stated: “He is a mobilizer, a leader par excellence, and has the wherewithal to rally round all the restive youths in the country and make sure their feelings are assuaged.

Construction of joint security base for Army, Police, others begins in Anambra

A joint security base that would accommodate the Army, Police, Civil Defence and similar agencies is underway to cater for Omambala region of Anambra State.

The project, which is being funded solely by the Prime Minister of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Ambassador John Metchie, who is also the President General of Umueri community, is part of efforts to frontally tackle and combat insecurity in about four local government areas of the state.

Located at the border between Anambra-East and West, the base when completed, would make it easier for the benefitting security agencies to engage in rapid response against banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in area.

Performing the foundation stone laying ceremony, a former lawmaker, Senator Emma Anosike, said the project is a welcome development and a timely response to insecurity in the region.

Anosike stated that security is a collective responsibility of all and maintained that the establishment of a joint unit for the Nigerian Army and other agencies would go a long way to guarantee a secured atmosphere not only in Umueri community but the entire Omambala region comprising Anambra-East, Anambra-west, Ayamelum and few other local governments in the North senatorial district.

The former lawmaker thanked Metchie for his lofty ideas and service to humanity adding that his philanthropy has yielded monumental results to the benefits of the communities and humanity in general.

Metchie who is also the Deputy Commander General of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service in charge of Technical Service, said he chose to construct the joint base for the security agencies to foster unity of purpose among them in order that they would synergise to rid the region of criminalities.

Metchie said the project was another way he is responding to the call of the state Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo for all hands to be on deck in issues of security in particular and overall development of Anambra state in general.

The Umueri President-General further disclosed that with the recommendation of the Police, Army, the DSS and the local government chairman, a security post was voted to be cited at the border between Anambra-East and West for crime control in the area.

He however admonished other well to do members of the society and communities to borrow a leaf from Umueri community as government, according to him, cannot do everything alone, adding that citizens should be able to assist government in addressing basic needs and challenges affecting their respective domains.

Metchie equally lauded the efforts of the government of Soludo in combating insecurity in Anambra state, stressing that it was Governor Soludo who upon inception of office, initiated home land security for Ndi-Anambra.

Chief Emma Edochie a prominent citizen of Umueri community, who commended the President-General for the project he undertook singlehandedly, said the nearest Army base is Onitsha, adding that to have a base in Umueri community will enhance security and reduce crime rate  in the area.

Present at the official foundation stone laying ceremony were military officials, officers of the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service among other dignitaries.

Many Nigerians may seemingly be familiar with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCON), a federal government agency that oversees the multidimensional engagements of Nigerians in the Diaspora, with the objective to protect their interest and also harness their potentials to ensure meaningful contributions to the development of the nation.

But what they may not likely know is that the initiative that birthed this increasingly impactful commission, headed by Hon. Abike Dabiri, came out from the fertile mind and foresight of the late Senator Annie Okonkwo, who represented Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Senate between 2007 and 2011.

As a business mogul and an experienced legislator, Senator Okonkwo had identified the socio-economic benefits of evolving a strategic policy thrust that would engender more productive synergy between the Nigerian government and Nigerians in the diaspora.

And in order to give life to this idea, Senator Okonkwo, sponsored a Bill entitled “Establishment of the Nigerians Citizens in Diaspora Commission”, which later came into existence as NiDCON.

His time at the Senate was evidently very eventful, as he served on different Senate Committees, such as Upstream Petroleum Resources, Police Affairs, Environment ( as vice-chairman) and Agriculture. He later contested for the governorship of Anambra state in February 2010, but lost to the then incumbent, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last general elections.

But apparently, either in victory or in defeat, Senator Okonkwo had always exhibited a remarkable sense of sportsmanship and commendable philosophical worldview that do not give oxygen to politics of acrimony or calumny, which some people may associate with happenings in some sections of the Anambra state political ecosystem.

Since his recent home calling, by his creator, those that had engaged him in the past, in political pugilism in his home state, Anambra, either in senatorial or governorship elections, have continued to underscore his positive  lifestyle, rooted in decency, love for family and community, sense of propriety, humaneness and unblemished character, that’s not tainted by vagaries of business or politics.

For instance, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC’s), Senator Chris Ngige, former Minister of Labour and Employment, who is one of Senator Okonkwo’s former political opponents, in his condolence message, hailed his political sportsmanship, as a man who detested politics of bitterness and showed good character in his conduct and utterances, in and outside public office.

Ngige described him as a strong and dogged politician with whom he fought many political battles and fierce contests, the most memorable being the three-dimensional fight for the Anambra Central Senate seat between himself, the late Senator and late Prof Dora Akunyili in 2011. And even though Ngige won the election, Senator Okonkwo didn’t hesitate to call to congratulate him in the spirit of laudable sportsmanship.

Also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, who also contested Anambra state governorship election with Okonkwo in 2010, gave further insight into Okonkwo’s positive politics as he disclosed how the late Senator supported and contributed to his campaign before the presidential election, in spite of the fact that he wasn’t a member the of Labour Party.

According to Obi, “Distinguished Sen. Annie Okonkwo was a veteran of Nigerian politics. Despite not being a member of the Labour Party, he was one of the strongest pillars of support in our journey to a New Nigeria. He provided very invaluable advice and immeasurable support during our vigorous campaigns around the nation.

“He persuaded his son, Hon. Uchenna Okonkwo, who was in another party then, to join the Labour Party, where he contested and eventually won a seat at the House of Representatives. After the elections and the subsequent declarations, which we are challenging in court today.

“Sen. Annie Okonkwo did not relent but remained steadfast in his efforts and commitment towards a New Nigeria. When I heard that he was sick, I travelled to the United States to visit and spent time with him.” Obi disclosed.

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) leader and Governor of Anambra state, Charles Soludo, has also eulogised him as a prominent son of Anambra who has paid his dues serving the state with dignity.

Remarkably, the renowned philanthropy of the Ojoto, Idemili Local Government Area born business tycoon, Senator Okonkwo, deservedly earned him the traditional titles of ‘Okaka Ojoto’, and ‘Agunaechemba Idemili’ (strong man of Ojoto and the Lion that defends the land of Idemili, respectively).

If there is any minute regret the late Senator may be taking to his grave, it would likely be not living long enough to symbolically handover the baton of representative leadership to his son, Uchenna, who was recently inaugurated to represent Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra state in the House of Representatives.

But Uchenna would be consoled by the fact that his dear father had the grace to shepherd him into that leadership path to continue the legacy of service to his people, through a well deserved electoral victory in the last National Assembly election.

Hon. Okonkwo described his late father as a leader with tireless efforts and passion for creating positive change, who would forever be remembered and cherished by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

“His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on our community.

“His legacy will live on through the countless lives he impacted and the causes he fervently championed,” he said.

He said further that his father dedicated his life to public service, championing the rights of the people he represented with unwavering commitment and integrity.

According to him, Sen. Okonkwo was an accomplished politician, a loving husband, father, and a grandfather who left a legacy of service, leadership, and love.

Late Senator Okonkwo, who bestrode Nigeria’s business and political circles like a colossus, was a loving husband to his wife, Chief Mrs Chinyelu Okonkwo (Ugoagu) and caring father to his children.

From a small family business in Aba, in the old Imo state, trading in cosmetics and other items, he built a conglomerate, that employed over 7,000 people. His firms include, Reliance Telecomm, Clemco Industries, Modern Communications (satellite TV Network), MacClemm Marketing Communications, Sunflower Nigeria and Pentagon Oil.

The amiable Agunechemba will be laid to rest on August 30 in his country home in Ojoto.
