APC: Obasanjo in no position to call anyone incompetent

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it finds the recent comment by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is “competing with Buhari in incompetence”, not only laughable, but also disgracefully hypocritical.

Its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said in a statement yesterday in Ogba, Lagos:  ‘’It is ironic that a man, whose own time in office is remembered more for political arrogance, squandered opportunities and failed democratic subversion, will have the audacity to label anyone incompetent.

‘’Let us remind Nigerians that under Obasanjo: Billions in power sector spending disappeared with zero results.

‘’The economy was handed off with more foreign debt than when he took office—after claiming to have paid it off.

‘’The infamous third-term agenda nearly plunged the nation into constitutional crisis.

‘’Corruption flourished under the disguise of reforms.

‘’If Nigeria is still recovering from years of structural rot, Obasanjo bears a huge chunk of the blame. The mess didn’t start with Buhari, and it certainly isn’t being deepened by Tinubu—it started long before, under the watch of men who now pretend to be saints.

‘’President Tinubu has taken decisions no previous leader had the spine to take. Removing fuel subsidies, overhauling the foreign exchange regime and confronting entrenched inefficiencies are not marks of incompetence—they are bold actions by a man ready to fix what others, including Obasanjo, either broke or ignored.

‘’Obasanjo’s bitterness is well-known. He cannot control this government, and he resents that Nigeria has moved on from his brand of egocentric, do-or-die politics. His habit of attacking sitting presidents when he no longer holds relevance has become predictable and pathetic.

‘’We strongly advise the former president to show some decorum, especially at his age. Elders are expected to advise, not agitate. If he has nothing constructive to say, silence will serve him—and the country—far better than these attention-seeking outbursts.

‘’President Tinubu is not in a race with Obasanjo or anyone else. He is focused on the future. Nigeria is on a path of reform, recovery and renewal—and no amount of potshots from bitter yesterday’s men will derail that journey.’’

He stressed the need for a strengthened regulatory environment aligned with modern laws and international best practices, noting that the Senate was open to stakeholders’ input in developing a national policy framework.

The Chairman, Global Rights Governing Board, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, said for any society that worked, citizens must be provided with an enabling environment to speak against societal ills, which, according to him, CSOs helped to achieve.

Odinkalu, who identified contributions of CSOs to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, said stakeholders were partners in making the society become better for all, hence the need for mutual collaboration.

The Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to Nigeria and West Africa, Mr. Massimo DE LUCA, said the outcome of the conference would reflect on better performances of CSOs across Nigeria.

‘Save Kwara South from rising insecurity’

Igbomina Professionals Association (IPA) has raised concern over growing wave of insecurity threatening villages, families and communities across Igbomina land and Kwara South.

It called for action to avert further escalation.

In a statement signed by its President, Bode Iranloye, the association said more coordinated, sustainable and community-driven measures were required.

Iranloye, a lawyer, praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, chairmen of Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin and Ekiti councils, as well as security agencies for steps taken so far.

“Lasting peace in Igbomina land requires the joint commitment of government, traditional institutions, religious bodies, media and citizens working together in sincerity and truth,” the statement said.

The group outlined several areas of intervention to strengthen security and restore stability in Kwara South.

‘’These include strengthening community security structures through regulated integration of vigilance groups and hunters with the police; empowering monarchs in intelligence gathering; creating economic empowerment schemes such as skill acquisition centres and digital training hubs; and reviving ‘Omoluabi’ values of discipline and integrity through education and reorientation.’’

The association recommended the deployment of drones, emergency hotlines and community alert apps for early warning; greater synergy among the Police, NSCDC, DSS, ‘Amotekun’ and the Military in border communities; stronger political will and support for security operatives; as well as regular dialogue platforms between farmers, herders and youths.

It emphasised the role of citizens and the media in fostering vigilance through the “see something, say something” approach, alongside responsible parenting and proactive information sharing.

The body urged government to provide relief materials for displaced persons already being accommodated by host communities.

It called for the establishment of a permanent Army base in the affected area as a matter of urgency.

IPA said insecurity could not be solved by security agencies alone, noting that poverty, unemployment and moral decay must be urgently addressed if Kwara South and Nigeria are to enjoy sustainable peace.

“We want to create an ecosystem where people can live, work and thrive.

“That means we need hospitals, supermarkets, pharmacies, fire stations and security presence.

“Nothing will be left undone to make inhabitants of these communities thrive,” he said.
