Oyo State Government has approved the building of toll plaza, flyover, underpass, entry and exit points with mini toll gates to complement the expansion of scope of the work already going on at the Jagun/Ibadan/Ife Interchange.

The additional infrastructure to the ongoing Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road project was approved at a cost of N26,109,712,000.

The move is part of government’s determination to make Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road operational by 2027.

The approval was given at the State Executive Council (exco) meeting held on Wednesday. It follows the request put forward to the exco by the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, which was approved on its merit.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the 16.7km Jagun/Ibadan/Ife axis of the Circular Road project, which cost N66,174,589,000, would now cost N92,284,301,000 as a result of the additional construction that would complement the project, such as toll plaza, flyover, underpass, entry and exit points with mini toll gates.

Lagos debunks claims on workers training default

Lagos State Government has clarified recent reports suggesting that 30 per cent of its employees failed to return after participating in government-sponsored overseas training programmes.

It described the claims as misleading and inaccurate.

Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, said the issue being referred to involved workers who proceeded on study leave without pay, not those officially sponsored by the government for training abroad.

In a reaction issued from his office following media interpretations of his earlier remarks at a ministerial news briefing marking the second year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, Ayantayo explained that while some public servants granted study leave without pay had failed to return to the state’s service upon completion of their studies, such cases represented a different category from those sponsored by the state government on official training or capacity-building purposes.

“We need to make an important distinction,” the commissioner said. “The individuals being referred to are those who applied for and were granted study leave without pay, often to pursue personal academic programmes abroad, not civil servants sent on official training programmes.

“Efforts are on to ensure accountability across all categories of personnel development, including bonding and post-leave return monitoring,” Ayantayo said

  • Coalition canvasses Youth capital development officers in regional development commissions

Coalition canvasses Youth capital development officers in regional development commissions

The Nigerian Regional Youth Leaders Coalition has called on Federal Government to appoint Youth Capital Development Officers in each of the six regional development commissions.

A statement  by Comr. Akinteye Babatunde (Ondo State), Comr Usman Saidu (Kano State), Comr. Nnaemeka Oruh (Abia State), Comr. Umaru Bala Babayaro (Kaduna State), Oghwere Ejiroghene Henry (Delta State), Kpakol Gbaraka Letom (Rivers State), Dr Saad Dodo (Adamawa State), Hon. Famuyibo Oluwasegun, (Ekiti State), Miss Jenifer Ornguga (Benue State), Ahmed Abdulhakeem (Kwara State), Charles Ezemiekwe  (Anambra State), and Come. Mariam Yunusa (Bornu State) said the move would mainstream youth development in Nigeria’s regional growth strategies.

The Coalition, which comprises youth leaders from across the geopolitical zones, emphasised the urgent need for structured youth representation in South South Development Commission  (SSDC), North East Development Commission (NEDC), North West Development Commission, North Central Development Commission, South East Development Commission, and South West Development Commission.

The statement reads: “We cannot but commend the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this laudable initiative, which will help galvanize the development of the regional resources which have been dormant since the time immemorial.

“For instance, the six regions (NE, NC, NW, SS, SE, SW) are all characterized by a bunch of mineral deposits such as granite, granite gneiss, quartzite, charnockite , gypsum, lithium, gold, coal, bitumen, iron ore, lead/zinc, and various gemstones. Others include tantalite, limestone, kaolin,  baryte, talc, rock salt, petroleum amongst others.

“We strongly believe this initiative will help to propel the development of these resources and consequently generate income for the regions and as well as the federal government. However, the energy and the tenacity of the youthful population of this great nation is highly required to accomplish these objectives”.

The Coalition proposed inclusion of vibrant and brilliant Youths in composition of the regional development.

The proposed Youth Capital Development Officers, it explained, will serve as liaisons between regional development programs and the youth population.

“Their role would include coordinating youth-focused initiatives, advocating for capacity-building programs, and ensuring that young people are actively engaged in regional planning and implementation processes.

“Nigeria’s youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow they are critical stakeholders in the present. By integrating Youth Capital Development Officers into each regional commission, we can institutionalise youth involvement in decision-making and ensure they are equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development.”

The Coalition noted that while youth constitute over 70% of Nigeria’s population, their involvement in key developmental structures is seen to be minimal especially in Regional development.

“The appointment of these officers would be a concrete step toward addressing this imbalance and achieving the government’s goals of inclusive and sustainable development.”

The Coalition proposed that these officers be empowered with budgetary allocation, programmatic authority under the Presidency, and access to decision-making platforms within their respective commissions.

“The Nigerian Regional Youth Leaders Coalition is urging the Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Ministry of Regional development and relevant stakeholders in the National Assembly to support this proposal and make it a national policy directive.

“From unemployment to insecurity, many of Nigeria’s pressing issues disproportionately affect young people. It is only logical that we be part of the solution—through strategic inclusion, not tokenism”.

The duo stated that this will also transition them into safe and dignified carer path through faith based discipleship, trauma informed care, and access to entrepreneurial resources and tools for sustainable livelihood.

Speaking in Ibadan at the grand opening of Blooming Dames Center, the Executive Director, Connecting Heart of Women for Positive Change Initiative, Okutinyang aid  centre is to uplift many ladies and offer women medical interference, skill acquisition, spiritual intervention, and social intervention among others.

She said:”Our desire and our goal, if we can have a safe house in every local government in Oyo State, that would be amazing. And the same thing in Lagos, the same thing in Abuja, the same thing everywhere. If we can just have one safe house in one local government, that would be one mind transformed.

“Please come support us, come help us, come donate to us. If you have a bus, we need a bus, come support us, but consistently. We don’t want just one-off support and then you run away. Hold our hands, help us. Come give the girls counselling.”

Ogedengbe, said the project was a collaboration between Connecting Hearts of Women Initiative and Pan-African Purpose Driven Women Initiative.

She said:”We realised that there’s a need for us to rise up to the occasion to be able to do our bit to help these women, some of them are victims of trafficking, some of them you know are there because of poverty, for different reasons, some are there because of selfish gains and all of that, but we’re here today to see what we can do to help them shift into dignifying sustainable livelihoods.

“We can’t do it alone, one of the things we’re asking for is support because we’re private organizations, NGOs, you know we do not have grants yet, we only have partners from families and friends who are helping us raise resources to be able to maintain the facility.

“When the ladies are here for the period that they will be here, six months or nine months maximum, feeding will be free, the facility needs to be furnished for them to be able to focus, there will be skills acquisition for them in their area of choices and that will also be free.

“For all the period that they will be here, feeding, you know toiletries, to get the place furnished, furniture, cooking utensils and all of that, we need this place to be furnished, to be up and running.

“And of course for people to understand that there’s a place where they can come to, people who are vulnerable, people who have been abused, where they can come to for safety, for covering, for shelter.”

Afenifere never called for Akume’s suspension, says official

Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, led by Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has never called for the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, its Director of Organisation,  Chief Kole Omololu, said on Wednesday.

He said in a statement that the organisation should not be dragged into any controversy over investigation of any individual by the anti-graft body.

The statement reads: “We categorically repudiate this spurious and unauthorised communication.

“Afenifere does not have factions. There is only one Afenifere, and it is under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

“At no time did the authentic leadership of Afenifere authorise any of its officers, serving or retired, to issue such a prejudicial, defamatory or politically-motivated statement.

“The public is hereby advised to disregard the fraudulent individuals hiding under the name of Afenifere to pursue personal or partisan agendas.

“We are fully aware that certain members of the Labour Party in Yorubaland have continued to masquerade as speaking for Afenifere.

“These political opportunists, whose actions are driven by bitterness and selfish ambition, are hereby sternly warned to desist from dragging the revered name of Afenifere into disrepute.

“The alleged statement, which attempts to link the SGF to an EFCC investigation involving a private individual, is not only dishonest but a deliberate act of blackmail.

“As publicly known, the said investigation was initiated on the strength of a complaint by Senator Akume himself, upon observing irregularities.

To now twist such facts into an accusation of complicity is irresponsible, malicious and embarrassing to the Yoruba nation.

“We wish to reiterate that Afenifere stands firmly on the side of due process, justice and rule of law.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should be allowed to conduct its investigations without pressure, coercion or threats of orchestrated protests.

“Afenifere, as a non-partisan and principled socio political-cultural body, will not be used as a vehicle for any political vendetta.

“We shall continue to defend the integrity of our name, the unity of Nigeria, and the dignity of Yoruba leadership.”

Oyo Police train DPOs, tactical commanders

The Oyo Police Command, in partnership with Fimihan Adeoye Security Consult has organised a three-day seminar for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Tactical Commanders across the state.

The training, with the theme: “Building capacity for effective Superintending” was to improve service delivery of Police personnel.

Oyo Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola said training for Police officers is very essential for everyday activities because if knowledge not updated, it becomes outdated.

He noted that the training will talk about use of firearms, basic Police duty, the interagency synergy, investigation processes, and investigation report writing among others.

He, however, said Nigerians, particularly people in the state at the end of the training should expect professionalism and improved Police training.

“As you can see, the men receiving this training are not the men on the road. We have their commanders, the DPOs, the head of tactical teams.

“But it is a sort of train-the-trainer. We expect that when they leave here, they will go and cascade that training to the men working under them. So essentially, it will ultimately get to the boys and the expectation is improved service delivery.”

  • Edelman Africa launches regional advisory to support global institution growth

Edelman Africa launches regional advisory to support global institution growth

Edelman Africa on Wednesday launched its Regional Advisory (ERA) team, comprised of senior industry veterans and communications advisors spread across North, East, West, Central and Southern Africa to assist existing and potential clients in building their businesses and navigating the continent.

This move, together with Edelman’s established network of vetted partners that span the entire African continent and offer on-the-ground tactical support across all 54 countries, positions Edelman Africa as the most connected communications advisory on the African continent and the leading provider of communications advisory across the region.

To build upon Edelman Africa’s already established teams in both Southern and East Africa, the regional advisory team will be co-led by two external advisors handpicked for their decades of experience across their respective regions: Kwame Senou, Executive Director of The Holding Opinion and Public (THOP) in Cote d’Ivoire and Kamal Taibi, Founder & CEO of Stratëus Group in Morocco.

Increasing market volatility, institutional failures pushing people to the brink, and growing mistrust of leaders in government, business, and media. The 2025 Edelman Global Trust Barometer Data identified these symptoms as part of a crisis of grievance: a sense of unfairness and a lack of confidence in our institutions to improve our world, continent, and respective countries.

For governments, multinational corporations, and NGOs hoping to expand their presence into Africa, building trust will be crucial to offsetting this sense of grievance.

“As our Trust research has shown, when institutions can’t be trusted to do what is right, levels of grievance arise. That’s why we must focus on increasing optimism, helping organisations cultivate and rebuild trust in local communities where they operate. This is especially true for those building their presence in Africa,” says Karena Crerar, CEO of Edelman Africa.

“Multinational corporations and other institutions can no longer afford to be out of touch. Nuanced, regional strategies must be in place to reflect Africa’s complex socioeconomic environments. You can’t transplant multinational business and communication models into a given country and hope they’ll stick. You need a top-down understanding of every market,” she says.

“This launch marks a significant step forward in how we support our clients’ ambitions across Africa. By bringing together deep regional expertise with the global reach of Edelman, we’re equipping institutions with the insight and guidance they need to navigate complex markets, earn trust, and drive impact at scale. It’s a strategic move that reflects both the growing importance of Africa in global growth plans and our commitment to being a trusted partner on that journey,” says Justin Westcott, COO of Edelman EMEA.

From public affairs influencing local policy to crisis communications, on-the-ground presence to regional analysis, this team will focus on not only tactical implementation in each country, but also strategic regional advisory for clientele operating in multiple African markets.

“This is a pivotal moment, where our role is to navigate the complexities and deliver tailored solutions. West and Central Africa present a dynamic landscape ripe with opportunities. Through this unique strategic alliance, we are well-positioned to support the ambitions of both global players and regional champions, driving meaningful impact across the region,” says Senou.

North Africa also offers compelling prospects, says Taibi: “The region’s strategic location bridging Europe, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa creates a hub for logistics and trade. Countries like Morocco and Egypt have become focal points for industries such as automotive manufacturing, energy transition, and agribusiness.”

Organisations working with Edelman on the continent will receive ongoing, bespoke advice based on their current organisational strategy and market expansion plans. They will then work alongside the advisors in understanding all aspects of the market, region, neighbouring markets, and overall context.

“Our advisors will then guide clientele on a strategic approach, going beyond Public Relations and tactical implementation, rather helping to tailor organisational goals into a regionally nuanced, culturally sensitive communications programme focusing on the stakeholders they want to reach. They will then work with our partner network across more than 50 African countries to implement these strategies and create the greatest possible positive impact for both the organisations and the communities in which they work,” says Crerar.

The ERA Structure: Steering this advisory team will be Karena Crerar, Edelman Africa CEO, with the following advisors overseeing each region: Kwame Senou, Executive Director, THOP, Cote d’Ivoire (West and Central Africa); Kamal Taibi, Founder & CEO, Stratëus Group, Morocco (North Africa); Corazon Sefu, Edelman Kenya Managing Director (East Africa Advisor); Geraldine Mamburu, Edelman Africa Business Development Director (Southern Africa).

Karena Crerar, Edelman Africa CEO, says: “As a leading communications consultancy in Africa, and a global leader in Trust, now is our moment to spearhead the African growth agenda for our industry, our people, and our clients – both on the continent and in international markets where interest in our dynamic continent remains high.”

She continues: “We aim to advise our clients on the nuances of Africa through a country-specific, regional, and continent-wide lens, ensuring their communications create positive economic and social impact. This, alongside access to Edelman’s global capabilities, allows us to design communication strategies for clients that drive meaningful change while fostering sustainable growth, helping us to push back against the crisis of grievance,” says Crerar.

  • Lagos Bus Reform Initiative targets safety, efficiency

Lagos Bus Reform Initiative targets safety, efficiency

Lagos State Government, through Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), has launched a Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) to revolutionise public transportation, with a pilot programme along Lekki-Epe corridor.

The initiative prioritises commuter safety, operational efficiency and technology-driven solutions to address the state’s growing transport challenges.

Director, Transport Operations, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Olasunkanmi Ojowuro, speaking on radio, said safety was the cornerstone of the reform.

“Commuters will travel in safer vehicles, driven by well-trained professionals,” he said.

“All drivers on the corridor will undergo mandatory training by Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) to ensure defensive driving standards.

“Vehicles, inspected by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), must meet strict safety criteria, with non-compliant operators required to upgrade or face exclusion.”

The BRI integrates private sector operators, merging existing players into a structured system. Twelve registered operators, managing fleets of up to 50 vehicles each, will service the corridor using high-and medium-capacity buses, alongside smaller vehicles such as ‘koropes’ and ‘danfos’ for first-and last-mile connectivity.

Ojowuro, an engineer, noted that ‘’these smaller buses will ferry passengers from inner communities to major hubs, ensuring seamless integration with larger routes.’’
