IAR&T workers protest non-payment of salaries in Ibadan

Workers at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, staged a protest on Wednesday over the non-payment of their December and January salaries.

The demonstration, held within the institute’s premises, was attended by leaders and members of the Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Allied Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI).

Speaking to journalists, SSANU chairman, Comrade Agbaje Michael, stated that the protest aimed to push the federal government to urgently address their salary concerns.

He said: “Our protest is to let the management know that we are suffering and for them to expedite actions, although they told us they have written letters to the ministry but that is not enough.”

In his remark, NASU chairman, Osadiya Adewumi lamented that workers at the Institute went on black Christmas and New Year as a result of not paying their December and January salaries, adding that there was no money to buy drugs for those who are on medication and their elderly families among the workers.

He however urged the management of the institution to go to Abuja for settlement of the delayed salaries, while threatening to report to NASU headquarters in Abuja for immediate actions.

He said: “Our people are tracking to work on a daily basis, the workers will soon embark on no pay, no work strategy to press for their demand.”

A National Executive Member of NASU, Com. Oladeinde Emmanuel stated that the protest would have come earlier than now but waiting for the management of the institution to take action as regards the salary arrears.

He disclosed that the claim of the Federal Government that wage increment was responsible for the delay was not accepted since it did not affect some other sister institutions.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of IAR&T, Prof. Veronica Obatolu stated that the Management felt the plight of the entire staff of the Institute.

Obatolu noted that the non-payment may be a result of an omission for December salary, saying the Federal Ministry of Finance has been notified and is currently working on it.

The Director affirmed that the management had been to Abuja to lodge complaints, saying the management had also written to complain.

While appealing to the workers to be calm and do their work diligently, she assured them that the issue would be resolved very soon.

“I am sure the Ministry and the Federal Government is aware and work is going on to have it resolved”, she stated.

Edo poll dispute: PDP, APC chairmen hopeful of positive outcome

The Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chief Anthony Aziegbemin and his counterpart in All Progressives Congress (APC), Emperor Tenebe, have expressed optimism about a positive outcome when Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivers  its verdict.

Both parties and their candidates in the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo (PDP) and Monday Okpebholo (APC), are locked in a legal battle at the tribunal on the outcome of the election.

The petitioners – PDP and Ighodalo – concluded presentation of their case on Monday, with the APC hopeful of beginning its defence later this week.

Reviewing proceedings so far, Aziegbemin said the petitioners, through their lawyers, had done justice to the case.

He said: “We think the case is pretty straight forward, we think it is documentary-based, we think it is specific, we think the judiciary will give it some judicial cognisance of what we tendered before them.

“We believe they have all they need from us and all what we should produce, I think we have given it to them. And we expect them to look at them and see how it goes.

“But suffice to say that it is not a petition as we used to have it in the country, where you call a lot of witnesses.

“We didn’t need to call a lot of witnesses. We called the witnesses that we needed to prove our case and make our case more solid.”

Aziegbemin said he was surprised that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) objected to the admissibility of its own documents, adding that it “gives us and Nigerians something to think about. Why will INEC oppose the documents it certified to the petitioners to be tendered in the open court?

“I think the tribunal will look into that and see why they are objecting. Although they said they will give reasons at the address stage, it is strange. It doesn’t add up,” the Edo PDP chairman said.

Tenebe faulted the manner the petitioners conducted their case, accusing them of dumping election documents on the tribunal and allegedly walking away without explanation.

He said there were consequences for submitting documents to the court ‘’without properly linking them to your specific claims or providing necessary explanations.’’

Tenebe said: “Dumping of documentary evidence occurs when a party in a case submits a large volume of documents to the court without properly linking them to specific aspects of their case, through witness’ testimony or legal arguments.

“It typically happens when due diligence is not followed. Ighodalo failed to explain the relevance of the documents he presented in court. There is no proper analysis or connection between the documents and the issues in dispute,” he said.

Tenebe added that “the documents have been left for the court to interpret without guidance from the party presenting them.

“What the PDP has done is simply to dump the documents in court, and there will be consequences for that.”

  • CSOs applaud Gov Abiodun for suspending monarch over assault on septuagenarian

CSOs applaud Gov Abiodun for suspending monarch over assault on septuagenarian

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ogun state has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his swift decision to suspend the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Oba Semiu Ogunjobi, for six months after he publicly humiliated a 73-year-old man, Chief Arinola Abraham Love, on a highway.

The CSOs also praised the Ogun state police command for arraigning the embattled monarch on Tuesday on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta and signed by the coalition’s chairman, activist lawyer Comrade Solomon Bankole, the group lauded the state government for taking decisive action.

However, they urged that the case should not be abandoned at the preliminary stage, stressing the need to ensure justice for the victim.

Bankole condemned Oba Ogunjobi’s role in the incident, describing it as an abuse of power.

He recounted how the monarch allegedly forced the elderly man to kneel before him on the highway while his palace aides physically assaulted him.

Emphasizing that such behaviour disgraces the status of traditional rulers in the “Káàrò, O ò Jí’re” land, Bankole insisted that suspension alone was insufficient.

He called for the thorough prosecution of the monarch to serve as a deterrent.

He further stated that Chief Arinola’s dignity had been trampled upon in the eyes of the public and that the only way for the government to prove its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights was to ensure justice for the septuagenarian.

“It beats our imagination to behold the disturbing video of the humiliation carried out on the personality of that 73-year old Chief Arinola, where a supposed custodian of the Yoruba cultural beliefs and norms was seen ranting like someone bitten by a rabies infected dogs”.

“As a Yoruba man to start with, it is not in our culture; it is against our tradition and values to have children physically assaulting the elders, talk talkless of having a traditional rulers supervising such public humiliation of someone old enough to be his father”.

“I have watched and listened to that video which has now gone viral and I must say that it was too horrible and unacceptable in our society”.

“Watching that 73-year-old man helplessly on his kneels, facing a downpour of curses and absorbing a hot slap by a palace slave was a gory sight and a nightmare.

Chief Arinola was indeed, caught at the wrong side of the monarch’s law and so, he was dragged to the floor and dehumanised before the world.

We are indeed, grateful to the finger that recorded that scene and released the clean video, did us a big favour otherwise, the fragile looking Baba would have been successfully humiliated, probably killed and buried without any noise just as Oba Ogunjobi had boasted.

“Ogun CSOs is seriously in support of the steps so far taken by the state government by suspending the power-drunk monarch, the Olorile of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdul-Semiu Ogunjobi who publicly humiliated the septuagenarian, Chief Arinola”.

“It is on this premise that we are also demanding that the boy that slapped him shouldn’t be allowed to return to his wife and children.

Aside his six-month suspension, the king must produce the overzealous boy and other disposable chanting his panegyric while descending on that Baba”.

“We commend the media practitioners in the state for bringing such report to the fore for public discussion as well as other stakeholders who rose up to defend the old man who was publicly assaulted and dehumanised”.

“We are now calling on all the security agencies to make sure that Oba Ogunjobi is prosecuted as this will go a long way at setting the standard for what the traditional institution should be in Ogun State”.

Renewed Hope Initiative: Makinde’s wife seeks more youths participation in agriculture

…as RHI empowers youths in Oyo

The wife of Oyo state governor, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, has called for greater youth participation in agriculture to enhance food production, create employment opportunities, and promote sustainable livelihoods for millions of Nigerians.

Speaking in Ibadan at the Youth Agricultural Support Program, an empowerment initiative organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, Mrs. Makinde lamented the declining interest of young people in the agricultural sector.

She attributed this to misconceptions about its viability, despite agriculture being the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.

As the RHI Coordinator in Oyo State, Mrs. Makinde emphasized that security and rural development depend largely on youth engagement in farming, a field many have yet to explore.

The empowerment program featured lectures on chili pepper and yam farming, as well as the distribution of farm equipment and cash grants to beneficiaries.

Represented by the Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, Mrs. Makinde reiterated that the RHI Youth Agricultural Support Program reflects the federal government’s commitment to securing the future of young Nigerians through agriculture.

She said: “Although this is an initiative from the Federal Government, but its aligns perfectly with the vision of the Oyo State government towards promoting agricultural development, create employment opportunities and boost economic empowerment.

“It will encourage young farmers, provide answers to questions and support Agriculture grant. I want to express my gratitude to her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the federal ministry of Agriculture and food security for this initiative.

“This viable effort will create opportunities and address challenges in youth employment and food security.

She however urged beneficiaries of the empowerment to remember that Agriculture is no longer a tradition of the past, but now encompasses technology driven solution such as precision planning, Agrictech, innovation and value chain development which are platforms for wealth creation.

“With the right mindset and education, you can become the next generation of Agricultural leaders starting from today. Let us cultivate hope, sow the seeds of progress and reap a harvest of prosperity together.”

Some of the beneficiaries of the empowerment lauded effort of both the state and federal government, promising to use the empowerment judiciously.
